Mag-log inHe stepped out onto the porch and slid his finger over the green button. "Fitzgerald.""Good evening, Mr. Fitzgerald. I apologize for the late call. My name is Minette Swanson, and I'm calling you from Montana Child and Family Services."Blair frowned and cleared his throat. "I don't understand.""Mr. Fitzgerald, Blair, if I may?""That's fine," he said, confusion swirling in his mind. He had no idea why this woman was phoning him. At first, he thought she might have been looking for Asher, since he was a registered foster parent, but then she used his name."I have a young boy with me and documentation names you as the likely biological father," she said.Blair huffed out a laugh. "That's impossible. It can't be right.""His mother is Madeline Tillson. Do you know her?""Is this some sort of joke? What the hell are you playing at?" His heart was beating rapidly in his chest."Mr. Fitzgerald, what I can tell you is that the boy cannot remain with his biological mother. I am not at lib
She couldn't think of a reason why she'd waited so long. Blair had been gentle, taking his time and learning her body and what she liked. She smiled as she listened to him move around in the kitchen, seeing what was salvageable for dinner. She didn't think anything was ruined. The oven had already been turned off when he got home, but anything was possible.Blair appeared in the hallway and leaned against the doorframe as he looked at her. "I thought you'd be dressed by now. I'm not sure how much eating we'll get done if you walk into the kitchen like that."She laughed and shook her head. "Maybe we don't have to eat at all."Blair grinned. "I need real food too."Cassidy shifted into a sitting position, the sheet falling to her waist. Blair made a noise at the back of his throat as she got to her feet and pulled her clothes back on. Her cheeks were a little red when she turned to face him, his eyes roaming over her. "Let's go eat, cowboy.""Reason number thirty-nine, trust."She smil
Days turned into weeks and soon evidence of spring was in the air. The snow melted and Blair looked forward to the new season. He'd fallen into a comfortable routine with Cassidy. Every night they cooked dinner together, talked about their day, watched some television and went to bed. There was no more awkwardness surrounding it. Blair still kept his clothes in the guest room and changed there, waiting for Cassidy to open the bedroom door before he joined her. They hadn't progressed further than kissing, but for some reason, that didn't bother Blair at all.Blair sat atop Black Moon, surveying the grassy fields in front of him. Everywhere he looked, the world was green and fresh. Spring buds bloomed on the trees and shrubs, the earth smelled clean and the bleating of the cattle made him smile. He turned to look back at the winter enclosures; the large doors being pushed open by the ranch hands."Let's move the cows first! Make sure to move them slow and easy! I don't need any panicked
Two days later, Blair's plan to catch whoever had broken into his office was hatched. He handed a stuffed envelope to Cassidy in front of all the ranch hands as they had a quick morning meeting, telling her to put it in his top drawer and lock it. He didn't make a big show of it but kept it intriguing enough that the culprit would catch on. Cassidy played her part beautifully, clutching the envelope to her chest tightly and nodding with a serious look on her face.By 5 p.m. the barn was empty, the ranch hands all heading to the bunkhouse. Blair locked his office and headed out to his truck. A few of the hands were drinking coffee on the porch of their bunkhouse and he lifted his hand in greeting. He was confident that the culprit would wait for nightfall before trying to break in again. When he reached Cassidy's house, he pulled his truck into the garage and headed inside.Cassidy met him in the small entryway with a travel mug in her hands. "To keep you warm while you wait."Blair sm
Asher met them on the porch, the lights in the house looking warm and inviting. Once they stepped into the small entryway, they took off their jackets and boots. The fireplace crackled as the flames leapt at the logs, the instant heat making Cassidy smile."Come on through to the kitchen, guys!" Emerson's voice called out to them.Blair kissed Emerson's cheek as he inhaled the aroma of food. "It smells great in here.""Thank you, Blair. Asher peeled the potatoes," she said with a grin."I guess we know who's on kitchen cleaning duty tonight," Cassidy said."The boys are," Asher said as he opened the fridge. "What do you two want to drink?""Whatever you have is fine, Cassidy will probably want coffee," Blair said and caught her looking at him.Voices filtered in from the living room as Asher switched the kettle on and the two boys, Joel and Oscar, walked into the kitchen. They shook hands with Blair and hugged Cassidy. Each boy went over to Emerson and kissed her on the cheek."It's b
The hours sped by steadily as she sorted through documents, bank statements and order sheets. She hadn't meant to snoop, but the bank statements were right there and it's not like she couldn't look. It seemed that the ranch was doing really well. The amounts moving through the accounts were enough to make her eyes widen. Eden had stopped by earlier, showing her how the filing system worked and soon she had two working piles on the desk. One pile needed to be filed again, and the other pile was made up of things that Blair needed to look at. Nearing lunchtime, she took a break and wandered into the main barn.Colt stood with a horse tethered to a pole in the middle of the barn, rubbing down its coat, his hand following the brush with each movement. His coat was glossy, muscles rippling with each brush, his tail swishing every few seconds. A small smile appeared on her face as she heard Colt talking to the horse."You always talk to your animals?"Colt looked up and grinned. "Is that w
