Chapter 2

작가: Nameless
Laurel had been Blake's first one-month girlfriend—the one who'd lasted only twenty-seven days.

She'd innocently stumbled into our breakup game, and when she learned the truth, she'd understandably resented us for it.

Blake had brought her into our social circle to make it up to her.

After years around this crowd, the unassuming small-town girl she'd once been had grown into a poised, striking woman.

I picked up my water and raised my glass to her. "Nothing in particular."

Brooks Palmer walked past singing a breakup song, shooting me a teasing look. "Tessa probably wished Blake wouldn't get snatched up by some hot girl this month and would come running back into her arms. Right, Tessa?"

Laurel chased him off, then turned back to me. "If he's dating, you should put yourself out there too. Why put yourself through this? You're the leading lady of your own life. We're not doing tragic romance."

My eyes crinkled into a smile as I leaned close and whispered in her ear, "Bet on us not getting back together. It's a sure thing."

Laurel's eyes flew wide.

Before she could ask me anything, another burst of cheering erupted across the room. Brooks grabbed her arm and dragged her over to see what was happening.

"Wooo!"

A spotlight landed on Blake, who was waltzing with a woman whose slender, fair waist showed between her clothes.

Elegant, focused, intimate.

"It's only been five minutes, and Blake's already picked someone. Tessa might actually be in trouble this time. Maybe I should switch my bet."

"Wait. Doesn't she look familiar?"

She did.

It was Corinne Duffy. She'd been the one last year, too.

Corinne was everything I wasn't—bold, passionate, hungry for excitement.

To me, a month was only four weeks of Blake and me doing the same ordinary couple things—shopping, grabbing coffee, and spending quiet time together..

With her, though, a month seemed endless. She took Blake scuba diving and skydiving and dragged him through every adrenaline-fueled activity she could think of. Their final stop was a snow-covered mountain climb.

I was so worried I couldn't sleep all night, but Blake refused to answer my calls.

I dropped everything and traveled day and night until I finally caught up with them at the mountain.

"You don't have any experience. You can't climb a snow-covered mountain." Blake idly played with one of his trekking poles. "Corinne will keep me safe."

Corinne was even more blunt. "Tessa, don't you think you're overstepping a little for an ex-girlfriend? It's not like you're his wife."

The wind and snow seemed to freeze every word I'd been about to say in my throat, leaving them lodged there, hard and painful.

It was as though I'd forgotten how to speak. I simply stared at Blake. He avoided my eyes.

Silently, I stepped aside to let them pass.

Corinne's triumphant laugh carried through her face covering and rang in my ears.

As I headed down the mountain, I thought, 'This is it. We're finally going to break up for good. I'll finally be free.'

But ten minutes later, Blake caught up with me. "Tessa, I'll listen to you. I'm not climbing anymore."

As two complete outdoor novices, we supported each other as we stumbled back to base camp through the deep snow.

When we arrived, the place was in chaos. A rescue operation was being organized.

"Corinne went backcountry skiing up there. She took a terrible fall."

Blake's expression changed instantly. He shot me a furious glare, then turned around and headed back up the mountain.

Blake personally helped carry Corinne down on the stretcher. She'd broken her leg. Her thigh was twisted at a sickening angle.

She clutched my hand and sobbed pitifully. "Tessa, I won't blame you for what happened today. But you two already broke up. Please stop clinging to him."

Looks of contempt, disdain, and disgust landed on me from every direction. The humiliation was so unbearable that I wanted to throw myself off the mountain.

After nine years with Blake, somehow I'd become the other woman.

Blake's lungs were affected on the mountain too, leaving him with a chronic cough.

But once we came down, he ignored his own condition and devoted himself to taking care of Corinne every day. He personally carried her in his arms whenever she needed to bathe or use the bathroom, refusing to let her suffer even the slightest inconvenience.

When Laurel told him I'd been hospitalized with a persistent unexplained fever, he'd just finished helping Corinne bathe. Both their faces were flushed.

But Blake's response was ice-cold.

"Since when did she start faking being sick? Besides, she has all of you looking after her. Corinne only has me."

  • The Last Breakup   Chapter 11

Corinne had finally stopped hiding her malice. This time, she was coming straight at me with the knife in plain sight.Instead, I calmly sat back down and asked one of the young women on my team to call 911 and request an ambulance. She looked uneasy."Tessa, are you really not going up there? What if she..."I turned my phone toward her, showing her the livestream. On the rooftop, Corinne was sobbing and accusing me at the top of her lungs, but she was standing far from the edge."She's putting on a show. And the show might not even be for me. If I go up there and she feels forced to follow through, what if she really jumps?"My colleague walked away, still looking confused.Blake arrived. He was even thinner now.He grabbed Corinne by the wrist and tried to pull her downstairs. Their wrists were almost the same size."If you keep humiliating yourself like this, you'll have even less chance of ever becoming part of my family."Corinne wasn't willing to let her performance en

Thoughtless. Ridiculous.I pulled my hand back, a mocking smile on my lips. "Do you still remember how you once said you'd propose to me?""I'm sorry, Tessa. The ring I had custom-made isn't ready yet. Wear this one for now, and I'll replace it with yours later."And the wedding dress. I helped design it myself. I know every inch of your body. You'll be the most beautiful bride in that dress!"His words were suggestive enough that the people watching didn't hold back."So she's already been used up by some guy.""Did she run away from the wedding or something?"My face flushed bright red.Crash!Owen slammed Blake to the ground with one punch, taking several chairs and a table down with him. Blake tried twice but couldn't get back up."Watch your mouth. She waited ten years for you, and you wouldn't marry her. Now that she's broken up with you, suddenly you're devoted to her? Weren't you the one cheating on her?""Ah!" Corinne came rushing in from nowhere and desperately sho

Even after Hailey set me up with her brother, Owen Mercer, and I'd had dinner with him twice, I still dreamed about Blake glaring at me with bloodshot eyes, accusing me of cheating on him.I struggled with insomnia for a long time. Even listening to sleep streams only made me more awake.Eventually, I asked AI to interpret my dreams. It told me the dreams meant that my connection with the person in them had run its course.Holding on to that thought that our connection had run its course, I slowly began to emerge from the shadow of the past.By the time Blake finally tracked me down, I was meeting Owen for the third time.Owen was steady and quiet, but always thoughtful and attentive. He'd taken me to upscale restaurants the first two times, so today I insisted on treating him to a seafood boil. His surprised expression was unexpectedly cute. "I thought you didn't eat things like this."The truth was, the last time he'd gone to the restroom, I'd accidentally seen the notes on hi

After enough arguments, I'd gotten tired of fighting. So I'd bought a house myself.Blake had been perfectly happy to live in it, which meant I had complete authority to do whatever I wanted with the property.Blake didn't even have the right to question it. He regretted it now.Corinne caught up with him. "Blake, Tessa must have found someone else. She doesn't want you anymore. Why won't you look at me instead?"Blake's eyes were bloodshot as he violently shoved her hand away. "Get lost! This is all because of you! She was still here yesterday! If it weren't for you, why would she have been hurt? Why would she have left?"Corinne fell hard onto the ground. Pain shot from her tailbone into her lower back, but Blake didn't spare her so much as a glance. When Laurel called, I was being discharged from the hospital. The pregnancy had been very early, and my body had ended it naturally. I hadn't suffered much physically. It hadn't even progressed far enough to require a procedure.

They went to the beach. The sand beneath their feet was soft and warm, waves crashed endlessly against the rocks, and the western sky glowed red with the last light of sunset.Corinne leaned in and kissed him."I still haven't taken you to see a sky filled with clouds glowing at sunrise. I really regret that. How about next year?"Blake wavered. What Corinne gave him was completely different from what he had with Tessa.Every second he spent with Corinne made him feel young and alive. Being with her was like a journey without a destination, spontaneous and free, rather than following a predetermined path toward marriage that left him feeling confined. Why couldn't a man have two wives? Then he remembered Laurel's warning that night.Tessa had told her that betting against them getting back together was a sure thing. Did she really have so little faith in him?He was like a kite. No matter how many times he flew away, he would always follow the string back to her without hesit

But I wasn't going to wait for him another minute. His rules and so-called agreement could no longer longer bind me.Blocked. Deleted. For the first time, both my heart and my life were free.Blake stared at the red exclamation mark beside his message—[Let's get married.]For the first time, panic gripped him.Hailey was still crying when I tilted my head and asked, "Is your brother married?"Her eyes went comically wide, two tears still hanging beneath them. Then she threw her arms around me in delight."No! No, he's not! I refuse to set him up with anyone, and that blockhead would never manage to get a girlfriend on his own."Once Blake realized Corinne had only used the threat of cutting her wrists to lure him over, irritation set in.But with her soft body pressed against his arm, it was hard to stay angry. His voice remained cool. "If you ever pull something like this again, don't contact me anymore."Corinne's eyes reddened as she held up her wrist. A vivid red mark sto
