Chapter 1

Author: Nameless
A bottle of champagne, shaken hard, shot toward the ceiling as everyone in the private room celebrated like they'd lost their minds.

They were celebrating my boyfriend, Blake West, being single again.

One moment, I'd been at the center of the crowd making a wish. In the next, I'd faded into the background, no longer the star of the night, and no one paid me any attention.

Blake had never been much for parties like this. His friends usually had to practically beg him to show up, which only made our extravagant annual breakup party that much more anticipated.

Blake and I met in college. He was the campus heartthrob, made even more desirable by his wealthy family, while I was the campus beauty who was already making a name for herself in the design world.

We were young, and sparks flew easily. Our romance became the talk of colleges all over the area.

But after enough time together, someone was bound to get bored.

On our fourth anniversary, after I'd made my wish, Blake was silent for a long moment before saying, "Tessa Callahan, we've been together four years. Aren't you tired?"

I looked at him, confused. All I could see was the dark whorl at the crown of his head, deep enough to draw someone in.

He pulled me tightly against him, rubbing my arm as he coaxed, "How about this? To avoid the seven-year itch, from now on, we break up for a month after every anniversary. During that month, we don't interfere in each other's lives.

"If one of us finds someone who's a better fit, the other person has to be happy for them. If neither of us does, we'll get back together after the month is over."

I shot to my feet in panic, knocking over the cake we'd decorated together. Bright frosting splattered across the floor like an oil painting abandoned before the final brushstroke.

His arms suddenly empty, Blake flexed his hands awkwardly, but he still pressed me for an answer. "Okay?"

Maybe I was too shocked. My arms and legs had gone numb, but I had my pride too.

"Fine."

The tension left Blake's body the instant I agreed.

During that month apart, I obsessed over everything he did. I compared myself to every woman around him. Had they held hands? Hugged? Kissed?

The slightest sign of something happening between him and another woman felt as though it might be the final straw.

The stress became so overwhelming that sometimes I'd wake in the middle of the night crying uncontrollably.

On the nights I truly couldn't take it anymore, I'd call him.

He always answered immediately. He never complained that I'd disturbed him or accused me of interfering with his life. Instead, he'd tell me silly stories in a gentle voice until I drifted off to sleep.

"Tessa, is a whole month apart too long?"

The next day, with three days still left before our month was up, we got back together.

On our fifth anniversary, I thought he wouldn't bring it up again.

I was wrong.

Now we had reached our tenth year, and it had happened every single year since. In fact, every year after that first one, Blake insisted on waiting the full thirty days before getting back together.

Not one minute or one second less counted as a month.

Our annual breakup had even become a major event in our social circle, with everyone placing bets on the outcome.

Even odds we'd get back together. A hundred to one that we wouldn't.

Laurel Keaton suddenly dropped into the seat beside me. "Tessa, what did you wish for?"

My wish?

That I'd never see him again.

Corinne had finally stopped hiding her malice. This time, she was coming straight at me with the knife in plain sight.Instead, I calmly sat back down and asked one of the young women on my team to call 911 and request an ambulance. She looked uneasy."Tessa, are you really not going up there? What if she..."I turned my phone toward her, showing her the livestream. On the rooftop, Corinne was sobbing and accusing me at the top of her lungs, but she was standing far from the edge."She's putting on a show. And the show might not even be for me. If I go up there and she feels forced to follow through, what if she really jumps?"My colleague walked away, still looking confused.Blake arrived. He was even thinner now.He grabbed Corinne by the wrist and tried to pull her downstairs. Their wrists were almost the same size."If you keep humiliating yourself like this, you'll have even less chance of ever becoming part of my family."Corinne wasn't willing to let her performance en

Thoughtless. Ridiculous.I pulled my hand back, a mocking smile on my lips. "Do you still remember how you once said you'd propose to me?""I'm sorry, Tessa. The ring I had custom-made isn't ready yet. Wear this one for now, and I'll replace it with yours later."And the wedding dress. I helped design it myself. I know every inch of your body. You'll be the most beautiful bride in that dress!"His words were suggestive enough that the people watching didn't hold back."So she's already been used up by some guy.""Did she run away from the wedding or something?"My face flushed bright red.Crash!Owen slammed Blake to the ground with one punch, taking several chairs and a table down with him. Blake tried twice but couldn't get back up."Watch your mouth. She waited ten years for you, and you wouldn't marry her. Now that she's broken up with you, suddenly you're devoted to her? Weren't you the one cheating on her?""Ah!" Corinne came rushing in from nowhere and desperately sho

Even after Hailey set me up with her brother, Owen Mercer, and I'd had dinner with him twice, I still dreamed about Blake glaring at me with bloodshot eyes, accusing me of cheating on him.I struggled with insomnia for a long time. Even listening to sleep streams only made me more awake.Eventually, I asked AI to interpret my dreams. It told me the dreams meant that my connection with the person in them had run its course.Holding on to that thought that our connection had run its course, I slowly began to emerge from the shadow of the past.By the time Blake finally tracked me down, I was meeting Owen for the third time.Owen was steady and quiet, but always thoughtful and attentive. He'd taken me to upscale restaurants the first two times, so today I insisted on treating him to a seafood boil. His surprised expression was unexpectedly cute. "I thought you didn't eat things like this."The truth was, the last time he'd gone to the restroom, I'd accidentally seen the notes on hi

After enough arguments, I'd gotten tired of fighting. So I'd bought a house myself.Blake had been perfectly happy to live in it, which meant I had complete authority to do whatever I wanted with the property.Blake didn't even have the right to question it. He regretted it now.Corinne caught up with him. "Blake, Tessa must have found someone else. She doesn't want you anymore. Why won't you look at me instead?"Blake's eyes were bloodshot as he violently shoved her hand away. "Get lost! This is all because of you! She was still here yesterday! If it weren't for you, why would she have been hurt? Why would she have left?"Corinne fell hard onto the ground. Pain shot from her tailbone into her lower back, but Blake didn't spare her so much as a glance. When Laurel called, I was being discharged from the hospital. The pregnancy had been very early, and my body had ended it naturally. I hadn't suffered much physically. It hadn't even progressed far enough to require a procedure.

They went to the beach. The sand beneath their feet was soft and warm, waves crashed endlessly against the rocks, and the western sky glowed red with the last light of sunset.Corinne leaned in and kissed him."I still haven't taken you to see a sky filled with clouds glowing at sunrise. I really regret that. How about next year?"Blake wavered. What Corinne gave him was completely different from what he had with Tessa.Every second he spent with Corinne made him feel young and alive. Being with her was like a journey without a destination, spontaneous and free, rather than following a predetermined path toward marriage that left him feeling confined. Why couldn't a man have two wives? Then he remembered Laurel's warning that night.Tessa had told her that betting against them getting back together was a sure thing. Did she really have so little faith in him?He was like a kite. No matter how many times he flew away, he would always follow the string back to her without hesit

But I wasn't going to wait for him another minute. His rules and so-called agreement could no longer longer bind me.Blocked. Deleted. For the first time, both my heart and my life were free.Blake stared at the red exclamation mark beside his message—[Let's get married.]For the first time, panic gripped him.Hailey was still crying when I tilted my head and asked, "Is your brother married?"Her eyes went comically wide, two tears still hanging beneath them. Then she threw her arms around me in delight."No! No, he's not! I refuse to set him up with anyone, and that blockhead would never manage to get a girlfriend on his own."Once Blake realized Corinne had only used the threat of cutting her wrists to lure him over, irritation set in.But with her soft body pressed against his arm, it was hard to stay angry. His voice remained cool. "If you ever pull something like this again, don't contact me anymore."Corinne's eyes reddened as she held up her wrist. A vivid red mark sto
