Chapter 3

مؤلف: Nameless
For three months, everyone—including me—thought Blake and I were finally over.

The people who'd bet against us getting back together were ready to pop the champagne.

Then Blake abruptly ended things with Corinne and came back to me.

Corinne showed up at his door looking utterly defeated. "Blake, my life is over without you."

Blake told me to go home first while he sent her away.

That night, he wrapped his arms around me, his breath hot against my ear as he murmured, "Tessa, broken bones take months to heal. I just didn't want to owe her anything. This time doesn't count as breaking the rules. You're the one I'm going to marry."

I stared out the window at the moon hanging quietly in the night sky. "Then let's get married."

He fell silent, rolled over, and went to sleep.

The music grew faster, shifting from a waltz into a Viennese waltz. Blake and Corinne spun rapidly across the floor, pressed close together as her skirt flew higher with every turn.

After all these years, she was the first of his month-long girlfriends to make a return appearance.

If I were still water, Corinne would be boiling oil. She always tempted Blake into taking risks, chasing things hidden far beyond his reach.

When the song ended, they looked at each other and burst out laughing. "Blake, you kept your promise! You really came looking for me! You're the one who said you couldn't live without me. I'm just showing you my boundless love."

She playfully punched him in the chest. The movement aggravated his old injury, and he immediately started coughing.

Corinne's eyes reddened as she reached to rub his back, but Blake gently took her hand. Then he dropped to one knee and pulled something from his pocket.

The private room, moments ago loud enough to shake the walls, went so silent you could have heard a pin drop.

Corinne's eyes widened in disbelief as she clapped both hands over her mouth.

Blake opened the box.

Inside was a dazzling ring. The setting evoked a blue sky, its band sweeping around like the arms of a galaxy. Tiny pave diamonds formed a river of stars, while the center stone blazed like the brightest point in the Milky Way.

Everyone seemed to stop breathing.

It was breathtaking, more beautiful than the night sky itself.

"You once took me to see the Milky Way from the top of a snow-covered mountain. Tonight, I brought it down for you."

Corinne nodded through her tears, the enormous diamond scattering them into flashes of rainbow light.

I stared at the ring, unable to speak.

The sheer contrast crushed what little remained of my exhausted heart beyond repair. My stomach suddenly clenched in a violent spasm. I couldn't suppress the nausea.

Laurel looked at me anxiously. "Are you okay?"

My chest and stomach churned so badly I couldn't force out a word.

All I could do was wave her off and brace myself against the wall as I slowly made my way toward the restroom. It hurt so much that my vision began to blur.

Suddenly, I was back one month earlier.

As our anniversary approached, Blake had been unusually restless. More than once, he'd looked like he wanted to tell me something, only to stop himself.

When I finally asked what was going on, he asked me to design a ring for him. The theme was the Milky Way.

I kept my expression calm, but inside, joy exploded through me.

He remembered.

Years ago, while we'd watched the northern lights together, he'd promised that one day, he'd pluck a star from the sky and use it to propose to me.

There wasn't much time.

I didn't let myself stop for a moment. From the first sketches and technical drawings to choosing the materials, polishing the metal, and setting the stones, I handled every detail myself. I refused to compromise on anything, not even the slightest variation in the color of a secondary material.

All that time, I'd been looking forward to him proposing on our anniversary. He'd been eagerly waiting for the chance to hold Corinne again. He'd trampled all over my love, taken our memories and everything I'd poured into that ring, and given it to her.

"Ma'am? Are you all right? Do you need me to call an ambulance?"

The repeated voice beside me slowly pulled me back to consciousness.

I'd fainted. So heartbreak really could make someone pass out.

It felt as though I'd been unconscious for a long time. My entire body was drained. But in reality, only a few breaths and blinks had passed.

I declined the stranger's help, took a deep breath, and headed for the exit.

I couldn't breathe the air in this place for another second.

As I passed the private room, Blake and Corinne were kissing amid everyone's cheers and congratulations.

Corinne held her right hand high, displaying the ring with more pride than the Statue of Liberty holding up her torch.

Corinne had finally stopped hiding her malice. This time, she was coming straight at me with the knife in plain sight.Instead, I calmly sat back down and asked one of the young women on my team to call 911 and request an ambulance. She looked uneasy."Tessa, are you really not going up there? What if she..."I turned my phone toward her, showing her the livestream. On the rooftop, Corinne was sobbing and accusing me at the top of her lungs, but she was standing far from the edge."She's putting on a show. And the show might not even be for me. If I go up there and she feels forced to follow through, what if she really jumps?"My colleague walked away, still looking confused.Blake arrived. He was even thinner now.He grabbed Corinne by the wrist and tried to pull her downstairs. Their wrists were almost the same size."If you keep humiliating yourself like this, you'll have even less chance of ever becoming part of my family."Corinne wasn't willing to let her performance en

Thoughtless. Ridiculous.I pulled my hand back, a mocking smile on my lips. "Do you still remember how you once said you'd propose to me?""I'm sorry, Tessa. The ring I had custom-made isn't ready yet. Wear this one for now, and I'll replace it with yours later."And the wedding dress. I helped design it myself. I know every inch of your body. You'll be the most beautiful bride in that dress!"His words were suggestive enough that the people watching didn't hold back."So she's already been used up by some guy.""Did she run away from the wedding or something?"My face flushed bright red.Crash!Owen slammed Blake to the ground with one punch, taking several chairs and a table down with him. Blake tried twice but couldn't get back up."Watch your mouth. She waited ten years for you, and you wouldn't marry her. Now that she's broken up with you, suddenly you're devoted to her? Weren't you the one cheating on her?""Ah!" Corinne came rushing in from nowhere and desperately sho

Even after Hailey set me up with her brother, Owen Mercer, and I'd had dinner with him twice, I still dreamed about Blake glaring at me with bloodshot eyes, accusing me of cheating on him.I struggled with insomnia for a long time. Even listening to sleep streams only made me more awake.Eventually, I asked AI to interpret my dreams. It told me the dreams meant that my connection with the person in them had run its course.Holding on to that thought that our connection had run its course, I slowly began to emerge from the shadow of the past.By the time Blake finally tracked me down, I was meeting Owen for the third time.Owen was steady and quiet, but always thoughtful and attentive. He'd taken me to upscale restaurants the first two times, so today I insisted on treating him to a seafood boil. His surprised expression was unexpectedly cute. "I thought you didn't eat things like this."The truth was, the last time he'd gone to the restroom, I'd accidentally seen the notes on hi

After enough arguments, I'd gotten tired of fighting. So I'd bought a house myself.Blake had been perfectly happy to live in it, which meant I had complete authority to do whatever I wanted with the property.Blake didn't even have the right to question it. He regretted it now.Corinne caught up with him. "Blake, Tessa must have found someone else. She doesn't want you anymore. Why won't you look at me instead?"Blake's eyes were bloodshot as he violently shoved her hand away. "Get lost! This is all because of you! She was still here yesterday! If it weren't for you, why would she have been hurt? Why would she have left?"Corinne fell hard onto the ground. Pain shot from her tailbone into her lower back, but Blake didn't spare her so much as a glance. When Laurel called, I was being discharged from the hospital. The pregnancy had been very early, and my body had ended it naturally. I hadn't suffered much physically. It hadn't even progressed far enough to require a procedure.

They went to the beach. The sand beneath their feet was soft and warm, waves crashed endlessly against the rocks, and the western sky glowed red with the last light of sunset.Corinne leaned in and kissed him."I still haven't taken you to see a sky filled with clouds glowing at sunrise. I really regret that. How about next year?"Blake wavered. What Corinne gave him was completely different from what he had with Tessa.Every second he spent with Corinne made him feel young and alive. Being with her was like a journey without a destination, spontaneous and free, rather than following a predetermined path toward marriage that left him feeling confined. Why couldn't a man have two wives? Then he remembered Laurel's warning that night.Tessa had told her that betting against them getting back together was a sure thing. Did she really have so little faith in him?He was like a kite. No matter how many times he flew away, he would always follow the string back to her without hesit

But I wasn't going to wait for him another minute. His rules and so-called agreement could no longer longer bind me.Blocked. Deleted. For the first time, both my heart and my life were free.Blake stared at the red exclamation mark beside his message—[Let's get married.]For the first time, panic gripped him.Hailey was still crying when I tilted my head and asked, "Is your brother married?"Her eyes went comically wide, two tears still hanging beneath them. Then she threw her arms around me in delight."No! No, he's not! I refuse to set him up with anyone, and that blockhead would never manage to get a girlfriend on his own."Once Blake realized Corinne had only used the threat of cutting her wrists to lure him over, irritation set in.But with her soft body pressed against his arm, it was hard to stay angry. His voice remained cool. "If you ever pull something like this again, don't contact me anymore."Corinne's eyes reddened as she held up her wrist. A vivid red mark sto
