Chapter 2

Author: Felisa
My soul peeled away from my frozen body, floating weightless in the air.

I looked down and saw myself—curled up behind the rocks, already dusted with a thin layer of snow.

A violent tug yanked at me, dragging my spirit through the wind, through the forest, until I came to a stop right in the middle of that brightly lit celebration hall.

I saw Leo, surrounded by a crowd, his smile radiant. I was pulled toward him, drifting at his side. So close—and yet he had no idea I was even there.

The celebration dragged on past midnight. Finally, Leo—slightly drunk—left with the crowd and headed back to his and Linda's house.

Right. He hadn't come back to our place in almost half a year. All to take care of Linda.

Linda clung to him like she had no bones. "Leo, you were amazing tonight. You're the most powerful Alpha in the whole pack now!"

He chuckled and flicked her nose. "That's because you awakened your special gift. It pushed me to reach my full potential."

Linda grinned smugly. "I knew it. I'm the only one who can really bring out the best in you."

"Of course, of course—Linda's been brilliant since she was a kid."

They laughed and teased each other for a long time before Leo finally remembered his phone. He saw my missed calls.

"She's throwing a tantrum again. Such a pain," he muttered under his breath.

Linda immediately pressed closer, all understanding and sweet. "Leo, is Freya mad? This is all my fault—if it weren't for my celebration, you wouldn't have missed your mating ceremony. Maybe you should go see her now?"

Leo glanced out at the snowstorm and shook his head. "The Forbidden Grounds are freezing. She's weak now—there's no way she actually waited there all this time. I'll figure out how to handle her little mood later. Don't worry about her. If she wants to be my Luna, she needs to learn to take it."

He tossed his phone aside. "Tonight's about celebrating. As long as Linda's happy."

They say that if the one you love thinks of you, your spirit can walk free.

Five days. Leo never thought of me once. Not a single time.

After the celebration, a long stretch passed without Leo contacting me. Time started to blur.

I drifted like a ghost, chained to Leo's side by invisible ropes, watching him handle business, watching him train, watching him take care of Linda.

I was completely invisible. Just when I was about to sink into a sleep I might never wake from, Linda suddenly collapsed.

She was burning up. Her newly awakened gift was unstable—she couldn't control it, and it was tearing her apart from the inside.

The pack's best healers couldn't do a thing. "Linda's in critical condition. Her foundation was already weak, and this power is too brutal. At this rate, she'll completely break down within three days."

Leo panicked. "How could this happen? There's nothing we can do?"

"There is one way," the healer said hesitantly. "Only Moonblossom, deep in the Forbidden Grounds, can neutralize the violent energy in her system and help stabilize her. But that place is thick with wolfsbane—extremely dangerous. No one's dared enter in centuries."

Leo's eyes lit up. "Moonblossom?"

He clung to that like a lifeline. "I'll go get it!"

"Absolutely not, Alpha!" The elders jumped in immediately. "You're the hope of our pack—you cannot risk your life!"

And then—finally—Leo remembered me. He remembered that I was the pack's best herbalist. That I was the only one who could find Moonblossom.

And with that, the reckoning was finally over.My resentment, my bitterness—they dissolved in that moment. The invisible chains binding my soul snapped cleanly.I felt myself growing lighter. This time, I was truly free.I took one last look at Leo on the judgment platform—a hollow shell of a man. Five years of my love, my youth, my greatest anchor in this life. The love and the hate, both ended here. Then I looked at Linda—now a withered, grotesque woman. Her punishment would continue, but would her remaining years bring her any real peace? I didn't know. There was no satisfaction in my heart. Only stillness. It was over.I turned, ready to leave this place of pain and betrayal. Then—a warm, gentle glow gathered beside me. The light faded, and a translucent little wolf pup appeared, no bigger than my palm, looking up at me with shy, trusting black eyes. Full of longing. Full of dependence. My child. My baby.My heart—the place that had long stopped beating—ached with a quiet, tender p

When the experience ended, Leo collapsed on the judgment platform like a pile of sludge. Drenched in sweat, as if he'd just been dragged out of water. His eyes were hollow, his lips moving in unconscious murmurs."My Freya… my child… I was wrong. I was so wrong."Tears poured from his eyes, endless and relentless. The regret was crushing—but it was too late. Everything was too late.Leo's punishment was far from over. After witnessing everything, the pack's trust in him had plummeted to absolute zero. No one wanted an Alpha so blind, so incapable of telling right from wrong. The elders stripped him of his title on the spot. Demoted to a common wolf. Exiled for life to the wastelands beyond the Forbidden Grounds—never to set foot on pack territory again. His soul would carry the weight of Freya's death for eternity, suffering the torment of a devoured heart until it scattered to nothing.Leo—who'd always craved power above all else—said nothing. Maybe it took losing everything for him t

The truth was out. Every lie, exposed.Linda's so-called special gift—nothing but a stolen fraud. Every ounce of Leo's hope, his favor, his sacrifices made at my expense—all of it, a colossal joke.He threw his head back and let out a guttural, agonized roar.Leo finally understood what he'd thrown away. For a scheming liar, he'd killed the woman who loved him with everything she had—and their unborn child. His world collapsed, burying him in its ruins. The reckoning was over.On the screen, Leo's debt had piled into an astronomical number—one he could never repay in a thousand lifetimes. The ancestral voice echoed again:"Leo, what you owe Freya is more than five years of youth. More than half your cultivation. What you owe her is two lives—hers and her child's. Now you will feel what Freya felt in her final moments."The screen shifted instantly—to the Forbidden Grounds where I died.Leo's senses were forcibly linked to the projection. He was made to relive my last five days.Biting

The screen kept going.Turns out, the battle tactics Leo used to suppress border conflicts—the governance strategies he'd built his reputation on, the policies that won the pack's hearts—he always thought Linda had been his secret weapon behind it all.But it was me.The light showed stacks of handwritten drafts. Every tactic. Every strategy. All from my hand.I hid it because I didn't want Leo to feel like an Omega had outdone him—didn't want to bruise his pride. And Linda just took credit for everything, every single time. One by one. Five years of silent sacrifice, laid bare in front of every wolf in the pack.Leo's debt snowballed out of control. He went from a revered Alpha to a thief who'd stolen my life.He stared at the screen in disbelief. All those details he'd overlooked, forgotten, taken for granted—now they slapped him across the face, one after another. The pack's gazes shifted. Admiration turned to shock, then to disgust. So their proud Alpha—his mate had sacrificed just

Five years ago. A cramped stone room. There I was—younger—kneeling in front of a merchant, begging: "Please, just give me a few more days. I'll find the money, I swear!"Back then, Leo had been ambushed during the Alpha challenge. Badly wounded. Pack resources were stretched thin, and the best healing tonic cost a fortune. I was there—begging for his life. The merchant just waved me off. No money, no deal.I had no choice. I pulled off the crescent-shaped pendant hanging around my neck. My mother's only keepsake. A rare Moonstone that could nurture an Omega's spiritual core."Will this work as collateral?" My voice cracked.I traded my mother's last gift for that tonic. And to keep Leo from worrying, I told him the council had given it to him. "Drink it, quick. The elders have high hopes for you."I said it with a smile—but the tears were pooling in my eyes. Leo thought I was just worried about him. He never knew it was my mother's pendant that bought that bottle. On the screen, the va

The bond reckoning—one of the oldest laws among wolves. When two wolves bound by a promised mating had one party die resentful because of the other's neglect or betrayal, the ancestral spirits would be stirred. Judgment would descend. The trial struck straight at the soul—no one could lie. And it was public. Every pack member had to be present.Leo, along with the entire pack, was brought to the grand square before the ancestral shrine.Linda was there too, down below the platform—pale, weak, leaning on a maid, her eyes flickering with uncertainty. No one could refuse. The reckoning began.Leo sat first. On the massive screen above the square, his contributions appeared. He'd settled border wars for the pack, led expansion campaigns, grown into a powerful Alpha, brought glory to the bloodline. Every achievement turned into gleaming golden numbers, stacking beneath his name.Gasps rippled through the crowd:"No wonder he's our Alpha!""He's given so much for all of us!"Then the light s
