Chapter 3

Author: Felisa
Leo called me. No answer.

So he called my best friend, Ling.

The second she picked up, Leo barked at her: "Tell Freya to cut the crap. Linda's sick. I need her to go into the Forbidden Grounds and find the herb."

On the other end—a long, awkward silence.

Finally, Ling's voice came through, barely holding it together: "Leo… you still remember Freya exists?"

Leo's jaw tightened. He clearly didn't like her tone. "I don't have time for your attitude. Tell Freya to come see me. Now."

"See you?" Ling let out a laugh—bitter, broken. "Sure. Why don't you go see her yourself—down there? She waited for you at the Moon Goddess Altar for five days and five nights for a ceremony that never happened! Leo—did you even know she was attacked by rogues? That she died from wolfsbane poisoning? Leo!"

Ling's sobs cut through the phone like a blade straight into his chest. "You know what, Leo? She was pregnant. Two months along. It was supposed to be a surprise for you—and you killed them both."

Dead? Pregnant?

Leo froze for a few seconds. Then he let out a scoff. "Ling, you two actually cooked this up together? Just to get me to come running back? I'll talk to Freya, but making up something like this—that's a new low."

He didn't believe a word. To him, all my pain, all my desperation—just another stunt to get his attention.

His voice turned cold, ruthless. "Listen, Ling. You tell Freya—stop with these pathetic games. She's my mate. There's no one else. She doesn't need to pull all these tricks to get me to notice her. If she wants to be my Luna, she needs to stop throwing tantrums and start actually being useful. Linda is my sister—her growth benefits our family, helps secure my position as Alpha. Freya should understand that."

On the other end, Ling completely broke down. Sobbing uncontrollably—for me, for everything—but she couldn't find the words to fight back anymore.

Leo hung up, annoyed.

The second the call ended, the ancient wolf-shaped mark on his wrist flared to life.

That was the bond mark—engraved by the council five years ago, the day we were betrothed.

Now it glowed an ominous crimson, like blood seeping through his skin.

"Alpha!" The head elder's face went pale. He pointed at Leo's wrist, his voice trembling. "Your mark—it's weeping blood! That only happens when the bondmate has died and their resentment lingers!"

Leo stared down at the eerie red glow. Ling's words echoed in his head. Could she have been telling the truth?

"No." He still refused to believe it.

Then—across the entire pack territory, an ancient, distant bell tolled.

The Summoning Bell. Only rung by the ancestral spirits when a grave judgment was at hand. Every wolf, wherever they were, had to answer the call of the soul trial.

The bond reckoning had been triggered.

And with that, the reckoning was finally over.My resentment, my bitterness—they dissolved in that moment. The invisible chains binding my soul snapped cleanly.I felt myself growing lighter. This time, I was truly free.I took one last look at Leo on the judgment platform—a hollow shell of a man. Five years of my love, my youth, my greatest anchor in this life. The love and the hate, both ended here. Then I looked at Linda—now a withered, grotesque woman. Her punishment would continue, but would her remaining years bring her any real peace? I didn't know. There was no satisfaction in my heart. Only stillness. It was over.I turned, ready to leave this place of pain and betrayal. Then—a warm, gentle glow gathered beside me. The light faded, and a translucent little wolf pup appeared, no bigger than my palm, looking up at me with shy, trusting black eyes. Full of longing. Full of dependence. My child. My baby.My heart—the place that had long stopped beating—ached with a quiet, tender p

When the experience ended, Leo collapsed on the judgment platform like a pile of sludge. Drenched in sweat, as if he'd just been dragged out of water. His eyes were hollow, his lips moving in unconscious murmurs."My Freya… my child… I was wrong. I was so wrong."Tears poured from his eyes, endless and relentless. The regret was crushing—but it was too late. Everything was too late.Leo's punishment was far from over. After witnessing everything, the pack's trust in him had plummeted to absolute zero. No one wanted an Alpha so blind, so incapable of telling right from wrong. The elders stripped him of his title on the spot. Demoted to a common wolf. Exiled for life to the wastelands beyond the Forbidden Grounds—never to set foot on pack territory again. His soul would carry the weight of Freya's death for eternity, suffering the torment of a devoured heart until it scattered to nothing.Leo—who'd always craved power above all else—said nothing. Maybe it took losing everything for him t

The truth was out. Every lie, exposed.Linda's so-called special gift—nothing but a stolen fraud. Every ounce of Leo's hope, his favor, his sacrifices made at my expense—all of it, a colossal joke.He threw his head back and let out a guttural, agonized roar.Leo finally understood what he'd thrown away. For a scheming liar, he'd killed the woman who loved him with everything she had—and their unborn child. His world collapsed, burying him in its ruins. The reckoning was over.On the screen, Leo's debt had piled into an astronomical number—one he could never repay in a thousand lifetimes. The ancestral voice echoed again:"Leo, what you owe Freya is more than five years of youth. More than half your cultivation. What you owe her is two lives—hers and her child's. Now you will feel what Freya felt in her final moments."The screen shifted instantly—to the Forbidden Grounds where I died.Leo's senses were forcibly linked to the projection. He was made to relive my last five days.Biting

The screen kept going.Turns out, the battle tactics Leo used to suppress border conflicts—the governance strategies he'd built his reputation on, the policies that won the pack's hearts—he always thought Linda had been his secret weapon behind it all.But it was me.The light showed stacks of handwritten drafts. Every tactic. Every strategy. All from my hand.I hid it because I didn't want Leo to feel like an Omega had outdone him—didn't want to bruise his pride. And Linda just took credit for everything, every single time. One by one. Five years of silent sacrifice, laid bare in front of every wolf in the pack.Leo's debt snowballed out of control. He went from a revered Alpha to a thief who'd stolen my life.He stared at the screen in disbelief. All those details he'd overlooked, forgotten, taken for granted—now they slapped him across the face, one after another. The pack's gazes shifted. Admiration turned to shock, then to disgust. So their proud Alpha—his mate had sacrificed just

Five years ago. A cramped stone room. There I was—younger—kneeling in front of a merchant, begging: "Please, just give me a few more days. I'll find the money, I swear!"Back then, Leo had been ambushed during the Alpha challenge. Badly wounded. Pack resources were stretched thin, and the best healing tonic cost a fortune. I was there—begging for his life. The merchant just waved me off. No money, no deal.I had no choice. I pulled off the crescent-shaped pendant hanging around my neck. My mother's only keepsake. A rare Moonstone that could nurture an Omega's spiritual core."Will this work as collateral?" My voice cracked.I traded my mother's last gift for that tonic. And to keep Leo from worrying, I told him the council had given it to him. "Drink it, quick. The elders have high hopes for you."I said it with a smile—but the tears were pooling in my eyes. Leo thought I was just worried about him. He never knew it was my mother's pendant that bought that bottle. On the screen, the va

The bond reckoning—one of the oldest laws among wolves. When two wolves bound by a promised mating had one party die resentful because of the other's neglect or betrayal, the ancestral spirits would be stirred. Judgment would descend. The trial struck straight at the soul—no one could lie. And it was public. Every pack member had to be present.Leo, along with the entire pack, was brought to the grand square before the ancestral shrine.Linda was there too, down below the platform—pale, weak, leaning on a maid, her eyes flickering with uncertainty. No one could refuse. The reckoning began.Leo sat first. On the massive screen above the square, his contributions appeared. He'd settled border wars for the pack, led expansion campaigns, grown into a powerful Alpha, brought glory to the bloodline. Every achievement turned into gleaming golden numbers, stacking beneath his name.Gasps rippled through the crowd:"No wonder he's our Alpha!""He's given so much for all of us!"Then the light s
