Chapter 3

Author: Yay Latte
Whitney tilted her head up to listen, the soft, familiar lines of her profile looking exactly the same as always. Then Jethro let go of her, opened his arms, and pulled her into a hug.

Whitney stiffened for a moment, but she did not push him away. The two of them stood outside the private club, wrapped in each other's arms like lovers reunited after years apart.

I sat quietly in the back of the cab, watching them. I felt completely calm. The last ridiculous bit of hope I had been holding on to finally went out.

I pulled out my phone, aimed it at them, adjusted the focus, and took a photo.

"Take me to my attorney's office."

...

The conference room at the law firm was chilled by the powerful air conditioning.

I slid my phone across the table. On the screen was the picture of Whitney and Jethro embracing outside the club.

Tessa Lynch, my attorney, was a woman in her 40s who wore gold-rimmed glasses. She had the sharp, capable look of someone who did not waste time.

She studied the photo carefully before looking up at me. Her voice was professional and calm.

"Mr. Cooper, it's going to be difficult to prove infidelity with this photo alone. Courts have fairly strict standards when it comes to proving adultery. We'll need more direct evidence, such as photos showing unmistakably intimate behavior, messages between the two of them, financial records, things like that."

I smiled and took my phone back.

"There will be more evidence. Ms. Lynch, go ahead and draft the divorce agreement for me first. My requests are simple. I want Whitney to have full custody of our child. As for the marital assets, I'll take only the share I'm legally entitled to."

Tessa gave me a thoughtful look, apparently surprised by how calm I was. Then she nodded.

"Of course. I'll have the agreement drafted as soon as possible. And if you can collect more evidence, they could strengthen your position when it comes to dividing the marital assets."

"I know." I stood up. "Once the agreement is ready, email it to me. I'll be ready to sign."

By the time I left the law firm, it was already noon.

I did not go home. Instead, I wandered around the mall, bought myself a new suit, and got a haircut.

At 4:00 pm, I returned home with my shopping bags.

The house was empty. Just as I had expected, Whitney still had not come back.

I made myself a plate of pasta. I had barely finished eating when my phone buzzed. It was a multimedia message from an unknown number.

I opened it, only to see a ten-second video.

Inside a dimly lit private room, Whitney was leaning against Jethro's chest. She tilted her head up and kissed him, her expression almost reverent.

The video was crystal clear. I could see Whitney's face perfectly, even the slight flutter of her eyelashes as she closed her eyes.

The moment I finished watching it, another message came in from the same number.

[Patrick, I think the only way to be happy in a marriage is to marry someone who truly loves you. Don't you agree?]

I saved the video and took screenshots. I saved the message thread too.

At 7:00 pm, Whitney called.

"Honey, I have a work thing tonight. I might be home late. Go ahead and get some sleep. Don't wait up for me."

Her voice came through the phone, but the background was strangely quiet. It did not sound like she was at any kind of work event.

"Okay," I said calmly. "Don't drink too much."

After hanging up, I sat on the couch in the living room, turned on the TV, and put on a random basketball game. The game was painfully boring. After watching for a while, I gave up and went to bed.

Sometime after midnight, while I was half asleep, I felt someone climb into bed. She moved carefully, and I caught the faint smell of alcohol.

Whitney slipped her arms around me from behind and cautiously buried her face in the crook of my neck. Then, in the quietest voice, she whispered, "I'm sorry..."

I did not move. I kept my breathing slow and steady, pretending to be asleep.

Inwardly, however, I laughed bitterly. What was this supposed to mean? Had she suddenly grown a conscience after cheating on me? Or did she feel guilty and decide to throw me a little fake tenderness?

However, it was only a flicker.I crouched down, gently stroked Lucas' hair, and said, "Lucas, we aren't going to get back together. However, I'll always be here for you. Your mom will always be here for you too. We both love you."Once I was done, I stood and looked at Whitney. My voice was cold."Whitney, I won't forgive you. What happened back then is like a thorn buried in my heart. I can't pull it out, and the wound never really healed. I don't love you anymore. I don't even hate you. There is nothing left between us except Lucas."Whitney's face went completely white. Despair filled her eyes."Why?" she whispered. "I know I was wrong. I've changed. Why can't you just give me one more chance?""A chance?" I looked at her. "I gave you a chance. When Jethro came back and you told me you weren't going to the reunion, I gave you a chance. When you told me you had to work that weekend, yet I saw you in Jethro's arms—and I was still holding on to that last little bit of hope."Yo

Lucas nodded, looking like he only half understood, then wrapped his arms around me. "Dad, I miss you."Every time I heard those words, something inside me softened. I would hug him back and tell him, "I missed you too. I'll always be here for you."…That day, after finishing up some work at the office, I was on my way to the gym. I had just walked out of the building when I spotted a familiar figure. It was Jethro. He was out of prison. He had been released a year early for good behavior. He had lost a lot of weight. His clothes were faded and worn, his hair was a mess, and his eyes looked clouded. He no longer resembled the dazzling golden boy who had once been the center of attention on campus. The moment he saw me, he rushed over and grabbed my arm."Patrick, please. You have to help me." His voice was hoarse and desperate. "I don't have a penny to my name. I don't even have anywhere to live. Please, just give me some money. I need to survive."I pulled my arm free and st

Yoana had even more evidence than I did.Not only did she have proof that Jethro had cheated on her during their marriage, but she also had text messages showing that he had stolen confidential company information and sold it to a competitor, along with bank records and witness statements.Jethro had no way to deny the charges, so he pleaded guilty in court. The court ordered him to reimburse Yoana's company for its losses and sentenced him to three years in prison for infringement of trade secrets.Around the same time, his divorce from Yoana was finalized, leaving him without any share of the marital assets. The outcome came as no surprise. In the end, both Jethro and Whitney lost everything they had, and both were left penniless and sent to prison. No one in the old class group chat felt sorry for them anymore. Everyone agreed that they had brought it on themselves.Someone asked me if I had known all along that things would end this way.I simply replied, "You always have t

Whitney was still trying to drag out the divorce, but the court already had evidence that she had transferred marital assets and misappropriated company funds. The judge ordered a court date anyway. The day before the hearing, Tessa went over all the evidence with me one last time."Mr. Cooper, the evidence is conclusive. We have an exceptionally strong case," she said confidently.I nodded. "Thank you for everything.""It's my job." Tessa smiled. "Honestly, it's a relief to have a client like you. You know exactly what you want, and you came prepared with solid evidence."…On the day of the hearing, I walked into the courthouse alone, dressed in a simple white outfit.Whitney and Jethro were there too.Whitney was wearing plain clothes. She had already been suspended from her company over the suspected misappropriation of company funds and was under police investigation. For the time being, she had been released on bail.Jethro looked exhausted, with dark circles under his e

I went to work and carried on with my life as usual, as if none of this had ever happened.Every now and then, though, I would think about Lucas. I would remember his little voice calling me Dad, the way he used to throw himself into my arms and act all sweet and clingy. Then I would remember what he had said at the birthday party."I hate you. You're a bad person."My heart still clenched whenever I thought about it. However, I knew I could not let myself give in.His hostility toward me was something Whitney and Jethro had taught him. All I could do was wait, wait for him to grow up and wait for him to understand right from wrong. The days passed, and Tessa continued preparing the case in an orderly fashion. She told me Whitney had approached her privately and tried to convince her to get me to drop the lawsuit. She had even offered her a huge sum of money.Tessa turned her down without hesitation.Just when I thought the lawsuit might drag on for a long time, unexpected news

The moment I said the words 'walk away with nothing', the entire ballroom fell silent.Whitney's smile froze on her face, and her expression darkened."Patrick, don't push your luck." Her voice was icy and angry. "I've already been more than fair to you. And now you have the nerve to ask me to walk away with nothing? Fine. Then I won't divorce you."Jethro's expression changed too. He slipped an arm around Whitney's shoulders and sneered."Patrick, have you lost your mind? You should be grateful Whitney is willing to give you any money at all. Did you really think you could hold this over our heads?"I looked at the two of them, furious and scrambling to defend themselves, and gave a quiet laugh."Whether I can hold anything over you isn't for you to decide." I raised my phone and projected the evidence onto the ballroom's giant screen. The transfer records appeared first, followed by the documents showing the changes in share ownership and the property transfer records.
