Chapter 4

Author: Yay Latte
Whitney held me for a while. Her breathing gradually evened out, and before long, she fell asleep.

I opened my eyes and stared at the moonlight spilling through the window. My heart felt like ice.

...

As the days went by, Whitney's 'overtime' became more and more frequent.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, she somehow found an excuse for staying away from home past ten.

"We're rushing to finish a project."

"I'm having dinner with a client."

"It's a company event."

The excuses were always different, but the result was the same—she did not come back home.

Lucas used to spend only one night a week at his grandparents' house. Now, he was staying there three nights a week. Every time he came home, the look he gave me seemed a little colder, a little more disgusted.

"Dad, why are you always so angry? You're like a crazy person."

"Dad, why are you never home? Is it because you don't love me?"

"I hate you! You're a bad person! Just go away! I don't want you taking care of me!"

I knew what was happening.

Jethro had already started getting close to Lucas. The story was unfolding exactly as it had in the original novel, one step at a time.

Whitney would take our child and run straight into Jethro's arms. I, the side character, was finally supposed to exit the stage.

However, before I did, I was not going to leave empty-handed. Not a single thing I was entitled to would be left behind.

I secretly began investigating the assets Whitney had under her name.

I had no idea what I would find.

Once I started digging, however, I discovered that over the past month, ownership of her three properties and shares in two companies had quietly been transferred. Most of the money in her accounts had also been moved overseas.

Both the new ownership records and the overseas account were linked to Jethro.

What shocked me even more was that Whitney had also misappropriated three million dollars in company funds into Jethro's account.

I photographed every transfer record, every document showing the changes in share ownership, and every property transfer record. I compiled everything into a complete evidence file and sent it all to Tessa.

Half an hour later, Tessa called me. Her voice was serious.

"Mr. Cooper, your wife's actions could constitute an improper transfer of marital assets. And misappropriating company funds could expose her to criminal charges. With the evidence we have, she's put herself in a very difficult position.

"It could have a serious impact on the division of marital assets, and she could end up receiving a substantially reduced share of the marital assets.

"I strongly recommend that you file for divorce as soon as possible and ask the court to freeze the marital assets before she can move or dispose of anything else."

"I know." I stared at the evidence on my computer screen, my voice calm. "Ms. Lynch, prepare the necessary documents. I'll let you know once I've decided on the timing."

"When are you planning to file?"

I thought for a moment. Then I suddenly remembered a scene from the original novel.

Jethro's birthday was coming up. He was going to throw a huge party, and during the celebration, he and Whitney would lose control of themselves and sleep together in one of the private rooms.

In the original story, that party was a major turning point.

Jethro would announce to everyone that he was divorced and had returned home. He would also make it public that he and Whitney had rekindled their old relationship.

"In a few days," I said. "After his birthday party."

After hanging up, I opened my calendar and stared at the date I had circled in red. Three days from now was Jethro's birthday.

I slowly ran my finger over the red circle, a cold smile curling at the corner of my mouth.

I hoped Jethro would like the birthday present I had prepared for him.

...

Jethro's birthday party was held at a private estate outside the city.

I took the invitation card I had found in Whitney's study, put on a simple black suit, and drove there alone.

The estate was glowing with lights, filled with elegant guests dressed to impress.

I stood in the shadows off to the side and watched Jethro in the center of the ballroom.

He wore a burgundy tuxedo, his hair perfectly styled. His smile was bright and confident, with the effortless charm of a prince.

Whitney stood beside him. She was wearing the dress I had personally ironed for her that morning, holding Lucas by the hand.

However, it was only a flicker.I crouched down, gently stroked Lucas' hair, and said, "Lucas, we aren't going to get back together. However, I'll always be here for you. Your mom will always be here for you too. We both love you."Once I was done, I stood and looked at Whitney. My voice was cold."Whitney, I won't forgive you. What happened back then is like a thorn buried in my heart. I can't pull it out, and the wound never really healed. I don't love you anymore. I don't even hate you. There is nothing left between us except Lucas."Whitney's face went completely white. Despair filled her eyes."Why?" she whispered. "I know I was wrong. I've changed. Why can't you just give me one more chance?""A chance?" I looked at her. "I gave you a chance. When Jethro came back and you told me you weren't going to the reunion, I gave you a chance. When you told me you had to work that weekend, yet I saw you in Jethro's arms—and I was still holding on to that last little bit of hope."Yo

Lucas nodded, looking like he only half understood, then wrapped his arms around me. "Dad, I miss you."Every time I heard those words, something inside me softened. I would hug him back and tell him, "I missed you too. I'll always be here for you."…That day, after finishing up some work at the office, I was on my way to the gym. I had just walked out of the building when I spotted a familiar figure. It was Jethro. He was out of prison. He had been released a year early for good behavior. He had lost a lot of weight. His clothes were faded and worn, his hair was a mess, and his eyes looked clouded. He no longer resembled the dazzling golden boy who had once been the center of attention on campus. The moment he saw me, he rushed over and grabbed my arm."Patrick, please. You have to help me." His voice was hoarse and desperate. "I don't have a penny to my name. I don't even have anywhere to live. Please, just give me some money. I need to survive."I pulled my arm free and st

Yoana had even more evidence than I did.Not only did she have proof that Jethro had cheated on her during their marriage, but she also had text messages showing that he had stolen confidential company information and sold it to a competitor, along with bank records and witness statements.Jethro had no way to deny the charges, so he pleaded guilty in court. The court ordered him to reimburse Yoana's company for its losses and sentenced him to three years in prison for infringement of trade secrets.Around the same time, his divorce from Yoana was finalized, leaving him without any share of the marital assets. The outcome came as no surprise. In the end, both Jethro and Whitney lost everything they had, and both were left penniless and sent to prison. No one in the old class group chat felt sorry for them anymore. Everyone agreed that they had brought it on themselves.Someone asked me if I had known all along that things would end this way.I simply replied, "You always have t

Whitney was still trying to drag out the divorce, but the court already had evidence that she had transferred marital assets and misappropriated company funds. The judge ordered a court date anyway. The day before the hearing, Tessa went over all the evidence with me one last time."Mr. Cooper, the evidence is conclusive. We have an exceptionally strong case," she said confidently.I nodded. "Thank you for everything.""It's my job." Tessa smiled. "Honestly, it's a relief to have a client like you. You know exactly what you want, and you came prepared with solid evidence."…On the day of the hearing, I walked into the courthouse alone, dressed in a simple white outfit.Whitney and Jethro were there too.Whitney was wearing plain clothes. She had already been suspended from her company over the suspected misappropriation of company funds and was under police investigation. For the time being, she had been released on bail.Jethro looked exhausted, with dark circles under his e

I went to work and carried on with my life as usual, as if none of this had ever happened.Every now and then, though, I would think about Lucas. I would remember his little voice calling me Dad, the way he used to throw himself into my arms and act all sweet and clingy. Then I would remember what he had said at the birthday party."I hate you. You're a bad person."My heart still clenched whenever I thought about it. However, I knew I could not let myself give in.His hostility toward me was something Whitney and Jethro had taught him. All I could do was wait, wait for him to grow up and wait for him to understand right from wrong. The days passed, and Tessa continued preparing the case in an orderly fashion. She told me Whitney had approached her privately and tried to convince her to get me to drop the lawsuit. She had even offered her a huge sum of money.Tessa turned her down without hesitation.Just when I thought the lawsuit might drag on for a long time, unexpected news

The moment I said the words 'walk away with nothing', the entire ballroom fell silent.Whitney's smile froze on her face, and her expression darkened."Patrick, don't push your luck." Her voice was icy and angry. "I've already been more than fair to you. And now you have the nerve to ask me to walk away with nothing? Fine. Then I won't divorce you."Jethro's expression changed too. He slipped an arm around Whitney's shoulders and sneered."Patrick, have you lost your mind? You should be grateful Whitney is willing to give you any money at all. Did you really think you could hold this over our heads?"I looked at the two of them, furious and scrambling to defend themselves, and gave a quiet laugh."Whether I can hold anything over you isn't for you to decide." I raised my phone and projected the evidence onto the ballroom's giant screen. The transfer records appeared first, followed by the documents showing the changes in share ownership and the property transfer records.
