In the darkness, two shadowy figures huddled over a small bundle.
“Nathan, it just - it just seems so wrong to - “ she faltered, her lip trembling and tears falling unheeded into the blankets she’s holding. “I know, my love. I know,” the other figure crooned, his voice gruff yet decidedly tender. “But we must do what we have to in order to keep her safe.” A car door snicked shut not far from them, far too quiet for a normal human to hear. “There they are. We must go.” ————————— Sam’s POV All was quiet. The forest seemed almost to be holding its breath. Even the wind had stilled, as though it were waiting. The full moon cast eerie shadows as a copper-haired young man ran through the trees, his footsteps sure, as though he ran along an invisible boundary. As he came into a clearing, his eyes scanned the forest, and his shoulders tightened. The forest shouldn’t be this quiet. True, it was rarely loud - the animals recognised Sam and his people for what they were: predators. But on a night like tonight, there should be some sound. The stillness put him on edge. His usually sparkling green eyes were sharp, uncertain, as he mind-linked his Alphas and his team. “Heads up, you guys. Something doesn’t feel right. Keep your eyes sharp and listen to your instincts. Alphas, could you send me some back up?” Garrett’s clear voice sounded in Sam’s mind. “Cole and I are on our way to you, Sam. Give us an image of where you are.” “Does anyone else feel off?” Cole’s voice added. A chorus of “no” and “everything looks fine here, Alphas,” rang through Sam’s mind as he slowed his run to a halt and sent an image of his clearing back to the group. “Do we keep patrolling or come to you,” a young warrior named Quinn asked. Sam smirked slightly. “Keep running your patrol, pup. Even if I were attacked here, it could be a distraction. Don’t ever leave your post unless one of your leaders commands you to. That’s why I asked for backup.” As a lone gust of wind swept towards him, goosebumps tickled his flesh and he swung his head in its direction, inhaling the familiar scent. Blood. “Guys -“ But before he could finish his thought, a woman - was it a woman? tumbled out of the brush and landed at his feet, sides heaving, covered in blood, dirt, and leaves, her long golden hair, tangled and obscuring her face. His mind filling with questions - not the least of which was why he couldn’t smell her scent, Sam bent down to get a closer look, when a deep, menacing growl made him go still. Quickly his eyes flicked into the forest, where no less than ten wolves now stalked towards him. He smelled it then, the rotting scent of - rogues. Why he hadn’t smelled it before, he didn’t know - it was a scent that carried, but there was no time to dwell on it. The sound of bones cracking filled the night air as he sent a desperate thought to his team “Hurry! We’re being attacked!”Cassia’s POVI study Garrett, my eyes flicking to Sybella who nods. I don’t want to lie to him. “Yes… and no. It’s one of the strongest feelings I have right now… the one I thought might be most obvious that it was mine if I shared it… it’s - if I think much… if I let the wall fall away and-” my voice catches, and I bite my lip, unsurprised when two low growls fill the air. “let myself think about my… my parents…” I trudge on, avoiding too much of the truth. “Then, yes… that’s what I feel… but I don’t let myself much… I’m - afraid I’ll get s-stuck there and walk in the fog again.” All-too-familiar tears blur my vision, and I feel myself being lifted into Cole’s lap, arms possessively encircling me, one hand slapping Garrett’s away as he reaches for my hands. “My turn,” he says huskily. “Let me have it, beautiful.” Garrett predictably grumbles, and the oracle and Tawny both laugh lightly. “Go ahead then, Cassia,” Sybella encourages. Again, I turn my inner eye to the bridges - to
Garrett’s POVI can’t stop bouncing my leg, and my wolf won’t stop growling in my mind as we watch Sybella hovering over Cassia, calling to her. As soon as her panic attack was over, as she seemed to begin to spiral again, Sybella had grabbed a pouch from the coffee table and ripped it open, blowing dust into my mate’s face who immediately slumped over in her seat.Cole and I would have reacted much faster if every damn pack member we had hadn’t been screaming in terror through the mental links - and by the time we jumped in front of Cassia, claws extended, Sybella had transformed and spoken in the voice of the Goddess telling us to sit and calm down. Alphas or no Alphas, the Goddess command was undeniable - part of the reason Oracles were hunted in the Anwir Kingdom - no one with a wolf could refuse a direct order from her. And she could only give those orders through Oracles - though not all of them could become clear enough channels or were strong enough to sustain her for very l
“There, there, little one,” she croons, kneeling down in front of me, scratching me behind the ear, sending my tail to thumping involuntarily. She waves a hand, and my skin stops itching, and I suddenly feel as though I’ve had a proper bath. I look down at myself and see my fur completely clean and look back up at her - skin a deep brown with golden highlights, clear amber eyes, long grey and white hair both braided and free, kindness and sorrow shining from her face. “I know this isn’t easy. I wouldn’t have built the door or chained it… except that if I hadn’t… you and Cassia would likely both already be dead… or in chains.” My anger gives way to my fear, and I begin shaking, quickly shushed by the goddess, who wraps her arms around me and pulls me, so that my head is laying on her lap. She strokes and clucks and hums for a while. And I relax, in spite of myself; it’s as though cool water has swept through my fevered mind, soothing
Cassia’s POV“Would you -” I grip Cole’s and Garrett’s hands more tightly and grit my teeth as I speak. “repeat that… one more time… please?” Sybella’s face is far too sympathetic. “I know this is a lot… and I wish there were an easier way - but your real name is Cassia Yvaine Faelen. You are the true heir to the Faelen Kingdom.” “And -” I’m finding it hard to breathe. “My parents?”“They were not your parents, at least not by blood. They were warriors your parents trusted. Your biological parents died 21 years ago at the hand of Devlin Anwir.” My ears begin ringing, and I try to remember what Dr. Blake taught me… slow my breath. Focus on - on Sybella’s eyes. Her nose. Her mouth. But - Suddenly I realise she’s also struggling, and I feel my mates hands tight in mine and on my forearms, and when my hearing whooshes back to me, I hear them gasping for air. “Breathe, Cassia!” Sybella commands loudly. My eyes snap back to hers. I notice her hands gripping the edge of her couch an
Cassia’s POV“M-my victory?”My heart races as Garrett’s grip around me tightens. I’m sitting in his lap, holding one of his hands whilst Cole holds my other hand. “That’s what she said.” “What- I mean what does that mean? I know you said she didn’t say more but what the fuck?” Garrett breathes behind me. I lean back into him and close my eyes. “My parents told me they were omegas… I - I only saw them fight a few times, and they were strong - but I never thought - they told me they were omegas… who-” I groan and cover my eyes. Who the fuck were they? Who the fuck am I? “Do you want to contemplate or go see if Sybella and Tawny are up? Or have some breakfast first?” I consider… finally opening my eyes and looking up at Garrett first, then back at Cole. Both just wait. Finally, I sigh, annoyed but certain. “They’ve had a long journey. I want answers… but I imagine they’re probably sleeping or getting their own answers from the Goddess… we should probably have some breakfast a
Cole’s POVI can’t seem to force my hand to open the door, and finally I sigh and lean against the wall, sliding down to the floor. Her victory. That’s what the oracle had said. Cassia’s victory. A questioning tendril of thought touched my own, jolting me.“Is Cassia asleep?” I respond internally. “Yeah,” Garrett’s gruff reply. “What’s wrong?” “I found out something… but not enough to know exactly what it means, and I should probably tell the both of you at the same time. Cassia’s oracle is here - with an apprentice.” “Can it wait until morning?” I note how tired he sounds, still not quite back to his full strength. “Yeah… I guess it can.”“Good. Come to bed then.” I hang my head and grunt. I’m exhausted, but my mind won’t stop turning over possibilities. Her victory. Just exactly who is our mate? I suppose the answers can wait. Walking into the room, the smell of her arousal hits me, and I chuckle quietly. It’s a smell that lingers. My wolf growls in lust in my head, b
