Chapter 3 The Things We Leave Behind

Autor: Sweetie Moore
"You should stay in the hospital and take care of yourself. You need to be in good shape for the wedding. I'll bring you a wedding present, so be good and wait for me."

I looked down from the window. Lachlan climbed into the passenger seat like he belonged there. Lexi leaned over and fastened his seat belt for him, the two of them moving with effortless familiarity.

Lachlan pointed at the glass music box I had given Lexi. Without a second thought, she picked it up and tossed it out the window.

Glass shattered on the pavement.

The little music box that had been part of our lives for five years broke into pieces.

'Lexi, I'm dying anyway. We won't be getting married. You can be with Lachlan now. Nothing's stopping you.'

I stepped away from the window and went to see the doctor about being discharged.

"Could you prescribe me some painkillers? I don't want the time I have left to hurt quite so much."

I did not want to spend the final stretch of my life lying in a hospital bed, waiting for the end.

…

Not long after I was discharged, Lexi called. "Why did you leave the hospital? Didn't I tell you to stay there and rest?"

I answered flatly, "I was getting sick of being there. I didn't want to stay anymore."

"No. Your health isn't good. You have to—"

Lachlan's voice came from the other end. "Lexi, my incision really hurts. Could it be infected?"

Lexi immediately turned her attention to him. "What happened? I'll take you to the hospital right now."

It was a long while before she remembered I was still on the phone.

"Just take care of yourself. Call me if there's a problem."

Then, she hung up.

I gave a self-deprecating laugh and hired a few cleaners by the hour to help me clear out everything Lexi and I had accumulated during our relationship.

The pottery, glass decorations, and little model house we had built together—I threw them all away.

Then there was half a drawer full of prayer cards she had collected for me. Those gave me pause.

…

Back when we truly loved each other, Lexi had gone to extraordinary lengths for my health. She searched everywhere for good doctors and donated to churches and charities, praying that God would protect me.

Later, she heard about a church known for its prayers for the sick. She bought an overnight train ticket and traveled for 36 hours just to pray for me there and bring home a prayer card.

After that, she went every year to pray for my health. I could not even remember how many times she had traveled long distances and spent hours on her knees praying for me.

The woman who had once loved me that much could now be so cold that she had forced me to donate part of my liver, pushing me toward death.

Throwing away prayer cards she had gotten from churches along with ordinary junk felt wrong somehow. After a moment's hesitation, I decided to keep the half drawer of them.

Once everything was cleared out, the bedroom felt noticeably more spacious.

I spent the night at a hotel. The next day, I contacted a funeral home and paid for a full-service funeral package. It included the funeral arrangements and removal of my body when the time came.

I was so impressed by their professionalism that I praised them extensively. Delighted, they even offered me a free gift set—a miniature collection of funeral items, including tiny wreaths and a coffin, so I could get a better idea of what everything would look like.

I happily accepted.

I had no idea the funeral business could be so accommodating.

…

Once all that was taken care of, I decided to live it up.

I rode roller coasters one day, got drunk at a bar the next, and even shared shots with a few pretty girls.

That very night, Lexi called. "Ryder Brooks, get your ass back here and explain yourself!"

I snorted and hung up.

Lexi gritted her teeth. "You were Ryder's stand-in. Now that Ryder is dead, you should die in his place!"Lachlan's body jolted. "Ryder is dead? Don't joke. He's only pretending to be dead to scare you, right?"Lexi let out a bitter laugh. "Pretending to be dead? You still think he's faking it? Do I need to bring Gideon here and have you face him before you tell me the truth?"The moment Lachlan heard Gideon's name, panic finally flashed across his face. Before he could explain, she pulled out a whip and lashed him 99 times. Lachlan screamed with every blow.…At last, Lexi dropped the whip, breathing hard. She looked at Lachlan, his body covered in blood. "I'm tired. Take turns beating him."Lachlan had thought it was finally over. Hearing that, he trembled violently and begged her to stop. She did not even look at him. She simply turned and walked away.He finally broke. "Lexi, you hypocritical woman! Do you really think killing me will make up for what happened to Ryder? Do

"Just you wait. When she finds out what you did, you're going to wish you were dead."Lexi froze.Ryder was really dead?He had died on the very day Tristan had reported back. And it was Lexi who had ordered his death."Are you insane? We're in this together!" Lachlan quickly lowered his voice."Then, you'd better get the money to me fast. Once I leave the country, no one will know what happened. Otherwise, I won't survive. And if I'm going down, I'll take someone with me."Lachlan was silent for a moment."Fine. Tomorrow at 10 a.m., I'll give you $100 million, but you have to keep your word too. Keep this to yourself. If this gets out, you won't survive either."So, this was what had taken place. I had been extremely careful whenever I went out during that time, yet somehow my rivals had still managed to track me down.Someone had leaked my whereabouts.Too bad I did not find out who the culprit was until I was already dead.…Lexi stood there for a long time before rushin

Lexi let out a sigh of relief, then watched the nurse with an almost amused look. The nurse froze for a moment before realizing what had happened. "There must be some misunderstanding. I'll look into it right away."After making a few inquiries, the nurse finally explained, "Mr. Brooks had made arrangements with a funeral service company before his death. Their services included removing bodies."Their team came this morning with Mr. Brooks' authorization and took his body away. That's why it couldn't be found."But Lexi had already lost patience."Tell Ryder the wedding is in three days. If he still doesn't show up, I'm not postponing it. If he doesn't come, Lachlan will walk down the aisle with me instead."Lachlan's face lit up with delight.Lexi gave the morgue freezer a cold look, then turned and walked away without another word.Watching her leave, I could only smile bitterly. Now that I was dead, she and Lachlan could finally be together openly. In the end, a female CEO won the jade pendant for $60,000.I took a closer look and realized it was Tessa Cruz, a younger student from my college days.Lexi had looked upset throughout the auction. When she saw that someone paid such an absurdly high price for the jade pendant, suspicion crept into her expression.…In the underground parking garage, Lexi stopped Tessa. "Why did you bid on that jade pendant? It's obviously not worth $60,000."Tessa smiled brightly. "It looks a lot like something an old acquaintance of mine has. If I give it to him, I think he'll be happy."Lexi's expression darkened. "You know Ryder?"Tessa nodded. "He was my upperclassman in college."Lexi's face turned grim. "I'll give you $1 million. Just give it back to me."She quickly signed a check and reached for the pendant.Tessa did not take the check. Instead, she pulled her hand back. "Ms. Wyndham, you didn't win it at the auction. That means it's mine now."Lexi snapped, "That belongs to Ryder.

"Probably. Otherwise, how would an assistant dare act that boldly? Ms. Wyndham isn't someone you can take lightly.""Shh. Don't say anything until it's confirmed. Did you forget what happened two years ago? You gave Ryder a hard time at dinner, and Ms. Wyndham went after you so hard your stock price tanked. She's got a temper, and she's fiercely protective of Ryder. We should watch what we say."At the auction, anything Lachlan wanted, Lexi kept bidding until she won it.Every time she won something, Lachlan would deliberately say loudly, "Lexi, you're too good to me. What if Ryder gets jealous?"His little games were so obvious they were embarrassing to watch.Yet, instead of stopping him, Lexi encouraged him with her eyes. That only made Lachlan put on an even bigger show. The people around them began looking at her with disdain, wondering when her taste had gotten so strange. She kept glancing toward the entrance of the auction hall while repeatedly checking her phone, as if

After this happened several times, Lexi said getting legally married was just a formality. We already loved each other. We did not need a piece of paper. All we had to do was throw a lavish wedding and invite our relatives and friends to witness it.So even the wedding could be used to threaten me.I let out a bitter laugh. "Don't worry about it. I won't bother you anymore."Lexi's hand, which had been soothing Lachlan, suddenly stopped. She turned toward me.Lachlan noticed the change in her expression. "What's wrong?"She stared in my direction for a long moment. "Nothing. I must be exhausted. I think I'm hearing things."Just then, Tristan walked in carrying a box."Ms. Wyndham, the jade pendant you asked me to have repaired is ready. The craftsman did a fine job. Take a look."Lexi took the box and opened it. The pendant had indeed been repaired quite well. Even at a close glance, it was hard to tell that it had ever been damaged.Standing behind Lexi, I suddenly felt like
