Chapter 5 The Last Keepsake

Autor: Sweetie Moore
"Eat first. I'll call in a specialist while you're eating and see if we can improve your treatment plan."

I froze when she said she had cooked the food herself.

Lexi was a neat freak. She had never cooked before. The only time she had ever made me a meal was when she drugged the chicken soup.

I never thought being with Lachlan would make her learn to cook so quickly.

What I had gotten was deception disguised as love. What he got was genuine care and affection.

Lexi went into the kitchen without another word.

For a moment, it was just Lachlan and me in the living room.

He looked at me and pulled a white jade pendant from his pocket. "Ryder, you really are generous. You'll give me anything. Can I have this too?"

My breathing quickened.

That was my mother's pendant. I had always left it with Lexi for safekeeping. How had it ended up in Lachlan's hands?

"I can give you anything else, but not this."

Lachlan raised an eyebrow. "If you're that attached to it, then I can rest easy."

A sense of dread washed over me, and I hurried toward him.

His smile grew wider. With a flick of his hand, the pendant flew through the air in a graceful arc.

The world seemed to slow down.

I lunged at his feet, reaching for the pendant, but I was still too late. I watched helplessly as it hit the floor and shattered before my eyes.

It was the last thing my mother had left me.

I lay at Lachlan's feet, staring blankly at the broken pieces, my mind completely empty.

It was not until I heard a quiet snicker above me that I came back to myself.

I lunged at Lachlan and punched him in the face.

All the hatred I had been holding inside came pouring out. I hit him again and again, tears streaming down my face.

He did not dodge a single blow. He took every punch without fighting back, the smile on his face only growing wider.

Then, all at once, Lachlan's smile disappeared, and he cried out in pain.

A moment later, Lexi screamed, "Ryder, what are you doing? Stop!"

She tried to pull me away, but I wanted to kill Lachlan. I could not hear a word she said.

In desperation, Lexi kicked me away. Her foot landed directly on the stitches from my surgery.

My vision went black, and for a long moment, I could not catch my breath.

Lexi only cared about checking Lachlan's injuries. "How could you be so stupid? Even if you didn't want to fight back, you could've at least called for me!"

Lachlan's face was already bruised and swollen. He gave her a weak smile. "I'm fine. I was afraid you two would fight because of me, so I didn't call you. Please don't punish him because of this, okay?"

His words reminded Lexi of me. She finally turned to look at me, sprawled on the floor and unable to get up because of the pain.

Her brow furrowed. She grabbed me by the collar and slapped me across the face. "Quit lying there and get up. Apologize to Lachlan right now. Otherwise, I won't let you off today."

My cheek burned.

I pointed at the shattered jade on the floor and murmured, "He broke my pendant."

Lexi said impatiently, "You've got boxes and boxes of this stuff. Do you really need to beat someone up over one piece?"

"It was my mother's!"

Lexi froze for a moment. "Even so, that doesn't mean you should beat up the man who saved your life. Just have it repaired."

The stitches from my surgery had torn open. Sweat seeped into the wound, making the pain even sharper.

When I had been tortured by our rivals in that basement, I had wished countless times for Lexi to come.

I had wished she would put an end to my suffering and stay by my side, gently caring for me as I healed.

He's only pretending to be dead to scare you, right?"Lexi let out a bitter laugh. "Pretending to be dead? You still think he's faking it? Lachlan screamed with every blow.…At last, Lexi dropped the whip, breathing hard. She looked at Lachlan, his body covered in blood. "I'm tired. Lexi let out a sigh of relief, then watched the nurse with an almost amused look. The nurse froze for a moment before realizing what had happened. "There must be some misunderstanding. I'll look into it right away."After making a few inquiries, the nurse finally explained, "Mr. Brooks had made arrangements with a funeral service company before his death. Their services included removing bodies."Their team came this morning with Mr. Brooks' authorization and took his body away. That's why it couldn't be found."But Lexi had already lost patience."Tell Ryder the wedding is in three days. If he still doesn't show up, I'm not postponing it. If he doesn't come, Lachlan will walk down the aisle with me instead."Lachlan's face lit up with delight.Lexi gave the morgue freezer a cold look, then turned and walked away without another word.Watching her leave, I could only smile bitterly. Now that I was dead, she and Lachlan could finally be together openly. In the end, a female CEO won the jade pendant for $60,000.I took a closer look and realized it was Tessa Cruz, a younger student from my college days.Lexi had looked upset throughout the auction. When she saw that someone paid such an absurdly high price for the jade pendant, suspicion crept into her expression.…In the underground parking garage, Lexi stopped Tessa. "Why did you bid on that jade pendant? It's obviously not worth $60,000."Tessa smiled brightly. "It looks a lot like something an old acquaintance of mine has. If I give it to him, I think he'll be happy."Lexi's expression darkened. "You know Ryder?"Tessa nodded. "He was my upperclassman in college."Lexi's face turned grim. "I'll give you $1 million. Just give it back to me."She quickly signed a check and reached for the pendant.Tessa did not take the check. Instead, she pulled her hand back. "Ms. Wyndham, you didn't win it at the auction. That means it's mine now."Lexi snapped, "That belongs to Ryder.

"Probably. Otherwise, how would an assistant dare act that boldly? Ms. Wyndham isn't someone you can take lightly.""Shh. Don't say anything until it's confirmed. Did you forget what happened two years ago? You gave Ryder a hard time at dinner, and Ms. Wyndham went after you so hard your stock price tanked. She's got a temper, and she's fiercely protective of Ryder. We should watch what we say."At the auction, anything Lachlan wanted, Lexi kept bidding until she won it.Every time she won something, Lachlan would deliberately say loudly, "Lexi, you're too good to me. What if Ryder gets jealous?"His little games were so obvious they were embarrassing to watch.Yet, instead of stopping him, Lexi encouraged him with her eyes. That only made Lachlan put on an even bigger show. The people around them began looking at her with disdain, wondering when her taste had gotten so strange. She kept glancing toward the entrance of the auction hall while repeatedly checking her phone, as if

After this happened several times, Lexi said getting legally married was just a formality. We already loved each other. We did not need a piece of paper. All we had to do was throw a lavish wedding and invite our relatives and friends to witness it.So even the wedding could be used to threaten me.I let out a bitter laugh. "Don't worry about it. I won't bother you anymore."Lexi's hand, which had been soothing Lachlan, suddenly stopped. She turned toward me.Lachlan noticed the change in her expression. "What's wrong?"She stared in my direction for a long moment. "Nothing. I must be exhausted. I think I'm hearing things."Just then, Tristan walked in carrying a box."Ms. Wyndham, the jade pendant you asked me to have repaired is ready. The craftsman did a fine job. Take a look."Lexi took the box and opened it. The pendant had indeed been repaired quite well. Even at a close glance, it was hard to tell that it had ever been damaged.Standing behind Lexi, I suddenly felt like
