Chapter 8 The Last Call

Author: Sweetie Moore
Lexi turned and wheeled Lachlan out of the room.

"Tristan, you stay here and watch him. Don't stop until he gives in."

The bodyguard hit me brutally. Every strike sent pain coursing through me, making my veins bulge as cold sweat poured down my skin.

"Gideon, that's enough. Don't kill him," Tristan said.

The bodyguard shot me a cold look and ignored Tristan completely. Then, he brought the whip down even harder.

For some reason, I thought I saw something murderous in that look.

At first, I could still thrash and shake violently. Eventually, I did not even have the strength to struggle.

Blood ran from my toes and pooled on the floor. My body grew colder as I lost blood, and my vision began to blur.

I heard the door open. It seemed Tristan had rushed out.

…

Meanwhile, Lexi was in another room, gently comforting Lachlan.

A doctor came in with the scans. "Ms. Wyndham, don't worry. He only sprained his ankle. There's no damage to the bone."

Lexi thanked the doctor and carefully asked about the precautions. She still insisted that Lachlan stay in the hospital for a few more days just to be safe.

As soon as the doctor left, Tristan came rushing in, breathing hard. "Ms. Wyndham, he's already taken 99 lashes. I don't think Mr. Brooks is going to make it. Please, tell Gideon to stop."

Lexi scoffed. "He's not going to die from this. Go tell him he can be as stubborn as he wants. No matter how badly he's hurt, I can spend whatever it takes to treat him. He won't have a single scar. But today, he has to listen to me."

Tristan looked like he wanted to say more, but Lachlan interrupted him with a sigh.

"I'm almost jealous of how much people care about Ryder. Even Tristan, who's been with you for three years, is willing to stand up for him. I'm different. Without you, Lexi, I could die and no one in this world would even care."

Lexi shot Tristan an unhappy look. "You helped Ryder lie to me too?"

Before he could explain, she impatiently waved him off. "I hope this is the last time you do something like this. Get out."

Tristan froze, then sighed and walked away.

…

The pain finally became too much, and everything went black.

Not long after, Lexi's phone rang. She answered it, and an unfamiliar voice came from the other end. "Hello. Am I speaking with a family member or close contact of Mr. Brooks?"

Lexi nodded. "I'm his fiancee. What is this about?"

"We had previously arranged to come collect Mr. Brooks' body in the middle of next month. A few days ago, Mr. Brooks moved the date up to next Tuesday. We just wanted to confirm the change."

She frowned. "Collect his body? You must have the wrong number."

The caller sounded confused but insisted. "We really are the team Mr. Brooks hired to collect his remains. About the date—"

Before the caller could finish, she angrily hung up.

"Ryder is taking this act way too far. He's tied up and he still managed to arrange for someone to scare me. He really doesn't think he's done anything wrong, does he?"

The more Lexi thought about it, the angrier she became. She immediately called Tristan. "Where's Ryder? Put him on the phone!"

Tristan's voice came through, choked with tears. "Ryder's dead. The doctor said they couldn't save him."

He's only pretending to be dead to scare you, right?"Lexi let out a bitter laugh. "Pretending to be dead? You still think he's faking it? "Just you wait. When she finds out what you did, you're going to wish you were dead."Lexi froze.Ryder was really dead?He had died on the very day Tristan had reported back. And it was Lexi who had ordered his death."Are you insane? We're in this together!" Lachlan quickly lowered his voice."Then, you'd better get the money to me fast. Once I leave the country, no one will know what happened. Otherwise, I won't survive. And if I'm going down, I'll take someone with me."Lachlan was silent for a moment."Fine. Tomorrow at 10 a.m., I'll give you $100 million, but you have to keep your word too. Keep this to yourself. If this gets out, you won't survive either."So, this was what had taken place. Lexi let out a sigh of relief, then watched the nurse with an almost amused look. The nurse froze for a moment before realizing what had happened. "There must be some misunderstanding. I'll look into it right away."After making a few inquiries, the nurse finally explained, "Mr. Brooks had made arrangements with a funeral service company before his death. Their services included removing bodies."Their team came this morning with Mr. Brooks' authorization and took his body away. That's why it couldn't be found."But Lexi had already lost patience."Tell Ryder the wedding is in three days. If he still doesn't show up, I'm not postponing it. If he doesn't come, Lachlan will walk down the aisle with me instead."Lachlan's face lit up with delight.Lexi gave the morgue freezer a cold look, then turned and walked away without another word.Watching her leave, I could only smile bitterly. Now that I was dead, she and Lachlan could finally be together openly. In the end, a female CEO won the jade pendant for $60,000.I took a closer look and realized it was Tessa Cruz, a younger student from my college days.Lexi had looked upset throughout the auction. When she saw that someone paid such an absurdly high price for the jade pendant, suspicion crept into her expression.…In the underground parking garage, Lexi stopped Tessa. "Why did you bid on that jade pendant? It's obviously not worth $60,000."Tessa smiled brightly. "It looks a lot like something an old acquaintance of mine has. If I give it to him, I think he'll be happy."Lexi's expression darkened. "You know Ryder?"Tessa nodded. "He was my upperclassman in college."Lexi's face turned grim. "I'll give you $1 million. Just give it back to me."She quickly signed a check and reached for the pendant.Tessa did not take the check. Instead, she pulled her hand back. "Ms. Wyndham, you didn't win it at the auction. That means it's mine now."Lexi snapped, "That belongs to Ryder.

"Probably. Otherwise, how would an assistant dare act that boldly? Ms. Wyndham isn't someone you can take lightly.""Shh. Don't say anything until it's confirmed. Did you forget what happened two years ago? You gave Ryder a hard time at dinner, and Ms. Wyndham went after you so hard your stock price tanked. She's got a temper, and she's fiercely protective of Ryder. We should watch what we say."At the auction, anything Lachlan wanted, Lexi kept bidding until she won it.Every time she won something, Lachlan would deliberately say loudly, "Lexi, you're too good to me. What if Ryder gets jealous?"His little games were so obvious they were embarrassing to watch.Yet, instead of stopping him, Lexi encouraged him with her eyes. That only made Lachlan put on an even bigger show. The people around them began looking at her with disdain, wondering when her taste had gotten so strange. She kept glancing toward the entrance of the auction hall while repeatedly checking her phone, as if

After this happened several times, Lexi said getting legally married was just a formality. We already loved each other. We did not need a piece of paper. All we had to do was throw a lavish wedding and invite our relatives and friends to witness it.So even the wedding could be used to threaten me.I let out a bitter laugh. "Don't worry about it. I won't bother you anymore."Lexi's hand, which had been soothing Lachlan, suddenly stopped. She turned toward me.Lachlan noticed the change in her expression. "What's wrong?"She stared in my direction for a long moment. "Nothing. I must be exhausted. I think I'm hearing things."Just then, Tristan walked in carrying a box."Ms. Wyndham, the jade pendant you asked me to have repaired is ready. The craftsman did a fine job. Take a look."Lexi took the box and opened it. The pendant had indeed been repaired quite well. Even at a close glance, it was hard to tell that it had ever been damaged.Standing behind Lexi, I suddenly felt like
