They didn't leave Fairview until Elena had arranged private security — two men, discreet, posing as additional facility staff, stationed within sight of Robert Cole's door before anyone left the building. Dr. Bellweather insisted on it himself, his composure fully returned, though something in his eyes stayed sharp with the particular vigilance of a man who'd spent eight months looking over his shoulder for a reason he'd finally, exhaustedly, been able to say out loud.

"He won't know why there are new faces around him," the doctor said quietly, walking them out. "On his good days, he might even find it comforting. On his bad ones, it won't register at all. But it's necessary, and I should have insisted on it months ago instead of trying to protect him quietly, alone."

"Why didn't you?" Claire asked.

"Because the moment I brought in outside security, I risked whoever's watching this facility realizing I know more than a hired physician should." He glanced back toward the building, its windows glowing soft gold in the afternoon light. "I've been playing a very careful, very lonely game for eight months, Ms. Whitman. I'm relieved, more than I can say, that I don't have to play it alone anymore."

---

Weston didn't speak until they were in the car, and when he finally did, his voice had none of the composure he'd worn all afternoon.

"He knew," he said, staring straight ahead at nothing. "My father found out what Edmund did to your family, and instead of coming to me — instead of trusting his own son with it — he went to a physician he barely knew, because some part of him must have already suspected I wasn't someone he could trust with the truth."

"Weston, that's not—"

"It is, though." His hands tightened on the wheel, though the car hadn't moved. "I spent so many years proving to him I could be exactly as controlled, exactly as untouchable as he raised me to be, that by the time he actually needed someone, he didn't think to look for me. He looked for a stranger instead."

Claire reached over, prying one of his hands gently off the wheel, lacing her fingers through his.

"Or," she said quietly, "he was trying to protect you. The same way you've spent this whole afternoon trying to protect a man who barely knows your name. Maybe he didn't come to you because he already understood exactly what would happen if whoever did this to your family realized his son was getting close to the truth too."

Something in Weston's face cracked entirely then — not the composed grief from the night Eleanor called, not the raw panic from Elena's office. Something quieter, and somehow worse. He leaned his forehead against the steering wheel, shoulders shaking, and Claire understood, watching him, that this was the first time in longer than she could guess that Weston Cole had let himself simply fall apart without an audience to perform strength for.

She didn't say anything. She just held his hand, and let him have it, because some griefs didn't need fixing — only witnessing.

---

The call came just after ten that night.

Claire was curled against Weston's side on the couch, half-asleep, the day's exhaustion finally catching up with both of them, when his phone lit up with Fairview's number and every ounce of drowsiness vanished at once.

"This is Weston Cole."

She watched his face change in real time — the careful stillness of a man bracing for the worst.

"When," he said. A pause. "Did anyone see him. Did the cameras—" Another pause, longer this time, his jaw tightening. "Is my father safe. I need you to tell me my father is safe before anything else."

Claire sat up fully now, heart hammering, watching him listen to whatever the voice on the other end was saying.

"Understood. Yes. I'll be there within the hour." He hung up, and for a moment simply stared at the phone in his hand like it belonged to someone else's life.

"Weston."

"Someone tried to access my father's room forty minutes ago," he said, voice flat with the particular calm of a man holding himself together by pure force. "A man in facility scrubs the night staff didn't recognize, badge that scanned as valid but belonged to an employee who'd called in sick hours earlier. Security caught it on camera before he reached the door — my father's fine, the guards we placed intercepted him in the hallway — but he ran the second he realized he'd been spotted. Gone before anyone could stop him."

"They know you were there today," Claire said, the realization landing cold and immediate. "They know you spoke to Bellweather. They know exactly how close you are now."

"They've known for a while, Claire." Weston was already reaching for his jacket, movements sharp and controlled in the way she now recognized as the sound of fear being converted, deliberately, into action. "The photo outside the study. The man at the diner. Whoever's behind this has been watching every move we've made since the night Eleanor first called — and tonight, for the first time, they didn't just watch."

He stopped at the door, looking back at her with an expression that made her chest ache.

"Tonight," he said quietly, "they tried to finish what they started nine years ago. And I think we both know that means they're done being patient."

The radio stayed dead for ninety seconds that felt like ninety years.Claire counted them without meaning to, each silent tick of the clock on the safehouse wall landing like a physical blow, Weston's hand crushing hers so tightly she could feel her own pulse hammering against his grip. Elena had gone pale and still at the table. Even Harold, who'd spent the night radiating the kind of calm competence that made everything feel survivable, was leaning toward the comms unit now with a tension none of them had seen from him yet.Static crackled back to life at last."We're clear." The team lead's voice came through rough, breathless, the particular sound of someone who'd just moved very fast and very quietly through the dark. "Had to pull back — one of the perimeter guards swept a flashlight close enough to our position that we couldn't risk staying put. The case was medical, near as we could tell. Insulin cooler, standard delivery size. Your father's being kept alive and reasonably stab

Diane's files arrived just after two a.m. — gigabytes of scanned documents, banking records spanning a decade and a half, a hand-drawn map of properties her informants had flagged over the years, annotated in a careful, cramped handwriting that Claire imagined belonged to a woman who'd spent countless nights exactly like this one, alone, building a case no one else knew existed. They spread it across every surface of the safehouse's main room — Harold cross-referencing coordinates against his own surveillance data, Elena running financial trails against Cole Capital's internal records, Claire and Weston working through Diane's informant notes page by page, searching for the one detail that might actually matter among hundreds that didn't.It was Elena who found it, just before four, her voice cutting through the exhausted quiet of the room."Here. A property upstate, different county than the Catskills address — registered under a trust Diane's notes flag as 'high-security, infrequent

Weston called her directly. There was no version of waiting he could stomach, not with his father's life measured in days instead of weeks, and when Diane Whitfield answered on the second ring, her voice carried none of the boardroom authority Claire had come to expect from her."I wondered how long it would take someone to find that footage," Diane said, quiet, almost relieved. "I'm glad it was you and not someone working for Pembrooke.""Explain," Weston said. "Now. Why were you at that location.""Because I've had a man watching properties connected to the Ashcombe Group for fifteen years, Weston, and three days ago, he flagged activity at that address I couldn't ignore." A long breath, heavy with something old and exhausted. "I went to see for myself. By the time I arrived, whatever had been there was already gone. I assume you found the same thing."Claire leaned in close enough to be heard. "Fifteen years. Diane, why would you spend fifteen years tracking a private security firm

Harold's safehouse was nothing like the penthouse — a nondescript brick building in Murray Hill, three locks on the door, blinds that stayed drawn around the clock. Claire sat at a folding table with a mug of tea gone cold in her hands, watching Weston pace the small living room like a man who'd forgotten how to stand still."We need the FBI," he said, for the third time in twenty minutes. "A man my father's age is being held somewhere we can't find, by an organization with resources we can't match, and we're sitting in a safehouse arguing about optics.""It's not about optics," Harold said patiently, settling into the chair across from Claire with the particular calm of a man who'd talked people down from worse decisions than this one. "It's about exposure. I spent six years in federal work before I went private, Mr. Cole. I know exactly how an investigation like this moves through official channels — slowly, with paperwork, with dozens of people touching the file before anyone acts.

Vivian chose a parking garage three blocks from her hotel — dim, mostly empty, the kind of place no one would think to look for a conversation that mattered. She was waiting by the time Claire and Weston arrived, arms crossed against the cold, none of her usual polish visible beneath the exhaustion written plainly across her face."Sterling Cross isn't Ashcombe's mole," she said, before either of them could speak. "He's mine."Weston's jaw tightened. "Explain. Now.""Two years ago, after I hired an investigator to look into your father's stroke, I realized the trail kept leading somewhere I couldn't access on my own — inside Whitman & Associates, inside Cole Capital after the acquisition. I needed someone on the ground. Sterling approached me, actually, not the other way around. He'd lost his previous job to a company Ashcombe quietly destroyed, and he wanted in on bringing them down as badly as I did." Vivian's voice was taut, urgent, nothing like the performed ease she'd worn in Wes

Neither of them slept. They lay in the dark instead, Claire's head on Weston's chest, listening to the slow, steady sound of his heartbeat like it might anchor her to something solid in a night that had taken every piece of solid ground out from under them."Talk to me," she said, somewhere around four. "Not about the plan. Not about Edmund, or Ashcombe, or any of it. Just — talk to me about something that isn't this."He was quiet for a long moment, his hand moving absently through her hair. "When I was eight," he said finally, "before my father told anyone my mother was dead, she used to take me to the park near our old apartment on Sundays. Not the penthouse — the apartment we had before any of the money mattered. There was a hot dog cart on the corner, and she'd buy me one even though my father hated it, hated the idea of his son eating street food, and she'd let me eat it anyway and tell me not to mention it at dinner.""That sounds like a good memory.""It's the only one I have
