Claire Whitman spent two years fighting to save her dying father’s company. Then billionaire investor Weston Cole takes it from her and offers her one brutal way to get it back. "Marry me for eight weeks, and your father’s legacy survives". With no other choice, Claire becomes the billionaire’s contract wife, determined to hate the man the media calls a predator. But Weston isn't the monster she expected. Behind his ruthless reputation is a man who becomes dangerously protective of her, while hidden records reveal his hostile takeover may have been a secret rescue—and Claire's trusted mentor may be the real enemy. Then Weston's ex-fiancée returns with a secret capable of destroying his empire and their marriage just days before the merger vote. When a leaked scandal threatens everything, Weston makes a shocking decision on live television: He publicly declares that his marriage to Claire was nothing but a business deal. Claire believes every word. But she doesn't know the truth. Weston lied to save her life—and the real enemy has just made his first move.

Chapter 1: The Price of Staying

The letter on Claire Whitman's desk read like a eulogy with better formatting.

'Acquisition finalized. Effective immediately. All existing contracts subject to review under new ownership.' Eleven years of her father's life, reduced to a paragraph written by a man who'd never once set foot in this building while her father was alive to see it.

She'd known this was coming. Whitman & Associates had been bleeding out since before the funeral, and Claire had spent two years playing surgeon with a company that was already gone, refusing to admit it. She just hadn't expected the man holding the scalpel to be Weston Cole — the investor the papers called 'the man who doesn't lose', like it was a compliment instead of a warning.

Now he owned her father's company. Which meant, as of nine a.m. this morning, he owned every decision she'd bled for.

The knock on her door was sharp. Two raps, no pause — the knock of someone who'd already decided her answer didn't matter.

"Mr. Cole would like to see you." His assistant, holding a tablet like a shield. "Now."

His office swallowed the top floor of a building that used to belong to someone else. Glass walls. The whole city laid out beneath him like something he hadn't decided whether to buy yet. He didn't stand when she walked in. Didn't smile.

"Sit down."

"I'll stand."

Something moved at the corner of his mouth — not amusement. Closer to interest, which was worse.

He slid a folder across the desk. Severance terms. Termination clauses. The surgical dismantling of everything her father had built, laid out in fourteen-point font like it cost him nothing.

"You're gutting it," she said.

"I'm restructuring it. You've got sixty employees whose jobs depend on this quarter, Ms. Whitman, and a balance sheet that's been hemorrhaging for three years. I didn't do that. Your father did — one bad decision at a time. I'm the reason there's anything left to save."

The words landed harder than she wanted. Not because they were cruel. Because they were true, and she'd spent two years refusing to know it.

"So what do you want."

He leaned back, studying her the way he studied every acquisition — for the weak point, the place where pressure made something give.

"I want a wife."

She laughed — one short, disbelieving breath. "Excuse me?"

"Not a real one." His tone didn't shift at all, like he was quoting stock prices. "I have a merger vote in eight weeks that depends on the board believing I'm not the man the press says I am. A fiancée fixes that. Two years, Ms. Whitman. You keep your father's name on the door. Your people keep their jobs. At the end of it, we walk away, and neither of us owes the other anything."

"And you thought of me."

"I thought of leverage."

She should have walked out. Every wall she'd built since she was nineteen — since she learned exactly what happened when you let someone matter — screamed at her to leave the company where it stood and take whatever was left of her pride with her.

She thought of Marcus in accounting, six months from his daughter's tuition. She thought of the name on the door. The only thing her father had left her that still meant something.

"I'd want it in writing," she said. "Every term."

"Of course. I don't deal in ambiguity."

"Claire."

"Weston." He said it like he was testing its weight.

She held out her hand before she could think better of it. His grip was warm and sure — entirely too steady for a man who'd just bought a woman's life for the price of a company she'd already lost.

"One condition." She didn't let go yet. "I don't fall for you. Ever. This is a transaction."

His eyes held hers a beat too long.

"Careful, Claire. That's the first promise either of us has made today that I don't think you can keep."

She pulled her hand back and walked out before he could see he was right.

Her phone buzzed before the elevator reached the lobby.

Edmund: 'Heard congratulations are in order. We should talk. Tonight — my office, not the firm's.'

Claire stared at the screen, cold moving through her chest.

She hadn't told anyone. Not Marcus, not her assistant, not a single soul outside the room where Weston Cole had just rewritten the terms of her life four minutes ago.

Which meant either the walls of Cole Capital had ears faster than she could imagine —

or Edmund Harcourt had known what was coming before she ever walked into that office.
