ISABELLE'S POV
“But there is something you must know,” Tristan said just as I turned to leave the throne room. “Kael’s brother was not only accused of assault, but he also publicly declared his intent to overthrow my rule.” He continued, his tone steady.
My brows shot up as I heard the news, my heart skipping a beat.
Rebellion was the highest form of treason in the Night fall pack and was also punishable by death. My wolf bristled, sensing how serious the situation just became.
I let out a deep breath, quickly composing myself. “If this news is true,” I said firmly, “I wouldn’t hesitate to carry out the punishment for such a crime myself. No one has the right to challenge our family’s rule and go unpunished.”
Tristan’s eyes softened at my words. “We don’t have conclusive proof yet, and there are so many holes in the case that don’t sit right with me.”
My interest was instantly piqued and I took a step towards the throne. “Then let me go along with my investigation. I’ll find out the truth about this matter and fill in all the blank spaces.”
Tristan raised a brow, his eyes narrowing at me. I could see in his expression that he was very skeptical about my reputation for chasing after handsome men and not concerned about the justice of the serious matters of the pack.
I caught his look and narrowed my eyes at his doubtful expression. “Don’t judge me so harshly. Just because I appreciate his good looks doesn’t mean I lack loyalty or purpose.”
“Besides,” I teased, “ you appreciate beautiful women too and you’ve never limit yourself to one woman either, and no one in the pack seems to mind.”
Tristan rolled his eyes, shaking his head in amusement, with a deep sigh. “Fine, I’ll give you just seven days. But if this investigation goes even the slightest bit wrong…”
“It won’t, I promise.” I blurted out cutting in with excitement.
He leaned back, studying me with mild amusement. “If you're really determined to go ahead with this, that is fine by me. But you’re free to enlist the Pack’s Epsilon, Ryker, as your judicial officer for assistance. He’s competent and would help your investigation.”
I considered this for a moment but then I shook my head. Kael would be enough to keep me occupied during the investigation.
My wolf's voice echoed through my mind. ‘You are not limited to one prospect Isabelle, you need to keep your eyes out for others.’
‘One dark-eyed soldier is enough to keep us busy,’ I whispered back to her.
“Thank you, Tristan, but I'm very sure Kael and I can handle it all by ourselves.”
Tristan nodded, but then hesitated a second, his gaze meeting mine with seriousness.
“Kael might be a difficult ally,” He warned with a smirk.“He is a hardened soldier and doesn't trust easily. I don't want you to come back crying.”
I crossed my arms over my chest, raising my chin defiantly. “It’s not entirely certain who would end up crying,” I replied, flashing him a confident grin
Now that I finally had the emperor’s permission, I wasted no time. I left the throne room and made my way across the palace grounds to where Kael still stood.
He stood like a statue in the cold, his back ramrod straight, I could sense the tension in his shoulders as I approached.
“I have gotten the Emperor's approval.” I informed him.
He turned slightly towards me, his eyes glinting with surprise.“Thank you for your help,” he said, a hint of gratitude peeking through his usual icy demeanour.
“Well, you shouldn't thank me just yet,” I replied, in a playful tone. “Now, you just have to stay by my side and help me with the investigation.”
Kael’s brows furrowed in confusion. “ Isn't this a case for the official Pack’s judicial officers, why would you be handling the investigation?” He questioned.
I let out a loud scoff, trying not to let my annoyance at his doubt show. “Would you rather I drop this case? I’m the only one willing to dig into the truth for you, and you’re being ungrateful to me?”
My words seemed to hit their mark, and he instantly straightened, swallowing hard. Though his eyes were wary, he nodded, conceding to me.
“I apologise.” He mumbled and it was obvious from the way his eyes avoided mine that he wasn't a man who was used to apologising.
I could still see the obvious doubts in his eyes, and he didn't fully trust me. But it was expected, especially because of my tarnished reputation as a spoiled princess in the pack.
With my usual confidence, I nudged him forward towards the waiting car. He looked reluctant taking a few cautionary steps before he turned back to me.
“Where are we going?” He asked, with his customary frown.
“We’re going to the prison to see your brother,” I replied.
He kept walking and slid into the car, I joined him, signalling the driver to set off.
As the car engine roared alive and we started moving, I glanced sideways at Kael, noting the tension in his jaw.
“What's wrong?” I whispered, watching his expression.
He turned away from me facing the window, a dark cloud marrying his features, clenching his jaw. “I know my brother would never commit an assault or any sort of crime.”
“Perhaps,” I replied, choosing my words carefully because I didn't want to cross him. “But you may know a person’s face, but not their heart. Your brother is accused of more than just assault, Kael.” I said gravelly.
His expression turned dark, but he said nothing, his gaze fixed on the passing landscape outside the car.
I turned back to the road, tension thick in the air between us. It was impossible to miss the frustration and doubt flickering in his eyes. He didn't trust me at all.
ISABELLE'S POVAs we rode through the streets, the low hum of the engine, the only sound in the car.I glanced at Kael, it was obvious he was still tense, staring out the window with a furrowed brow as if lost in thought. My wolf whispered pranced, nudging me to break through his stoic prickly exterior.“What did you mean back there?” He asked, his voice filled with curiosity. I leaned slightly towards his warmth, my eyes glinting with mischief. ‘You need to play hard to keep his attention solely on you.’ She suggested.I agreed, a little mystery would keep him on his toes. “Am I beautiful?” I murmured, tilting my head and brushing my hair out of my face with a coy smile.Kael’s face flushed a deep crimson, his body stiffening. “I… yes,” he admitted, in a mere whisper. “Yes, Princess… you are beautiful.” Warmth bloomed inside me, my heart racing at his response. It was all meant to just be a game, or so I thought, yet his words pulled at something deep in me. My wolf hummed with a
ISABELLE'S POVMy eyes narrowed as I watched him lower his head as he admitted, “I did go to the club.”“And did you go alone?” I asked, my tone sharp and firm.He stammered, his face growing pale. My wolf stirred, urging me to press him further for answers. I could sense there was more to what happened that he wasn’t saying. I just needed to scare the truth out of him.“Levi,” I called out, my tone turned icy. “This is your very last chance. Your brother went through so much just to get here and see you, and we both know this prison is crawling with rats and cockroaches. If you don’t want to live like this and then be executed, you’d better be honest with us right now.”His grip on the bars trembled, his lips quivering as he finally broke down. “It wasn’t my idea. A friend… he told me it was a fun place, and I thought we were just going to hang out. I didn’t know it was a club until we got there. When I went in, I… I saw…” He swallowed hard, his face flushing red with embarrassment.
ISABELLE’S POVWhen we arrived at Rowan's house his guards gave me a curious look as I stepped out of the car.My presence here was already a familiar sight to them from the days I used to wait around, eager to see Rowan. They bowed with respect and turned prepared to notify Rowan of my arrival immediately. But there was a spark in my eyes as I announced, “I’m not here for Rowan. I came here to see Thane. Take me to him—now.”The guards froze, murmurs echoing through them at the sudden change. Just then, the door opened, and Rowan himself stepped out, a surprised look on his face that he hid it with a polite smile. But before he could approach us or say a word, I moved to Kael’s side, linking my arm through his. Rowan's eyes flickered with surprise, his gaze fixed on the link between Karl's and my arm.I pulled him closer, raising my voice cheerfully. “I’m so exhausted from the day’s events and would love a nice warm meal. Rowan, be a good host and prepare some food. Thane and his s
ISABELLE’S POVI was satisfied as Kael and I stepped out through the doors of Rowan's house. We have gotten the confirmation we needed: Kael’s brother was innocent of the rape and assault charge, even though the accusation of treason still loomed over him. My wolf nudged me with a sly suggestion, ‘You need to use this opportunity to extract more from Kael. After all, you had already solved half his problem.’ I smirked coyly, feeling a surge of confidence at the chance to take control.Whirling around to face Kael, I let out a casual sigh. “Well, I guess I have fulfilled my promise to prove your brother’s innocence—at least for the assault accusation,” I said, keeping my tone light but watching for his reaction.Kael's head snapped towards me, his eyes meeting mine filled with confusion. “What do you mean Isabelle?” He growled.“I mean, I'm done here. You now have evidence proving your brother is innocent of the assault charges.”“Wait, but we agreed to honour our deal once my brothe
KAEL’S POVThere was absolutely nothing I could do to shake the flustered feeling from Isabelle’s boldness. Her brash demands to have me in her bed were outrageous but she whispered them like it was absolutely normal.I felt trapped, not by her words, but by the intensity of her gaze as she stared at me waiting for a response. My ears flushed crimson, and an intense heat spread through my body, but I quickly quelled the fire, my jaw clenched in frustration. My instinct was to shut her down and end all of this. But I couldn't think of hesitating to deny her, not now that we were finally making some progress on the case.If Isabelle abandoned the investigation now, my brother’s life would be ruined, and I just couldn’t allow that to happen. For Levi's sake, I had reluctantly agreed to her terms, even though I was still reeling from the implications of her words. When Rowan offered to also help solve the case, I could see the reluctance in Isabelle's eyes that she was going to reject h
ISABELLE’S POVI frowned, turning to Kael, and asking, “What stories are they talking about?”Kael's expression darkened immediately, his jaw clenched as he muttered, “Just some fanciful tales.”The sudden harshness in his voice startled me for a moment. I still desperately wanted to press him further but decided against it, I could sense he didn't want to talk about the hidden stories.Since Kael was so hesitant to share the story for some reason, I guess I had to get it some other way. I was already intrigued and I had to know more about what the people were murmuring about.I turned around glancing at Rowan's stiff figure, my gaze flickering to the matrons still talking in hushed tones. “ Beta Rowan, what stories are they talking about?” I asked, my curiosity evident in my impatient tone.He raised his brows at me and I kept my expression stoic, our gaze clashed for a moment before he realised I was dead serious, he shifted uncomfortably on his feet, arms crossed across his chest a
ISABELLE’S POV Something about his presence stirred me. My wolf already intrigued. He looked like he'd been plucked right out of a painting, his features refined and simply perfection.“Are you alright?” I asked, my voice calm even as my heart skipped a beat.My body flushed with the same sensation I felt when I first laid eyes on Kael, a natural physical attraction I couldn't deny.Alan straightened, his pride untouched despite the humiliation. “Thank you, Miss. I’m fine.” He replied smoothly, with a graceful bow.I narrowed my eyes at the wealthy man, who seemed to take pleasure in tormenting him. Hiding a secret smirk, as I decided to put on a whole performance. With theatrical flair, I suddenly collapsed to the ground with a loud thud, gasping for air and clutching my chest like I was going to faint.l cried out, my voice trembling with false distress "The owner’s cruel words have caused my heart to falter,"The crowd gasped in shock as they watched me. Alan rushed over to help
ALAN’S POVThe bell of the cafe jingled as I stepped outside right after the strange woman. The cold wind hit me hard as I walked through the door, a stark constant from the casual warmth of the cafe.I straightened my back, still reeling from the confrontation inside. I followed her, her quick footsteps echoing on the sidewalk until she stopped at a quiet corner of the street, and whipped around to face me. I was a little taken aback just like before by her beauty, her clear blue eyes and plump lips. I stared at her, still very surprised that such a distinguished-looking young lady would go so far as to stand up for a homeless beggar that she hadn't met before. Her expression was calm and filled with determination as she held out the pouch of money Cain gave her towards me.“What–?” I questioned, narrowing my eyes at the brown leather pouch, swelling with coins.“Take it,” she said firmly.I shook my head, taking a step back away from her. “No, I certainly do not want charity,” I mu
ALAN'S POVThe moment the announcement was made, a cold wave of shock hit me. I knew I was talented, I had always believed in my abilities as an artist. But the thought of the public voting, of their opinions holding such weight in the competition, was enough to make me question everything. My hands become clammy, his heart drumming in my chest. I shut my eyes tight as the public watched the paintings and chose the winner. This was it, the last moment for my dreams to come through. I took a deep breath as the hall went silent again.Master Levi's voice rang out, slicing through the ringing in my ears and my nervousness. “The winner of this year’s art competition is Artist Alan!”The applause was deafening, followed by loud cheers, the gasps of approval. It was all overwhelming for a moment.I suddenly felt the floor shift under me, my legs now unsteady as I collapsed back onto my seat. I clutched my chest, barely able to breathe. The world around me blurred for a minute as I stood up
ISABELLE’S POVI was restless in the villa, pacing my room and unable to keep still. Today was the art competition and I knew Alan would be in the heat of it right now.Not knowing what was going on there was almost driving me crazy. A knock echoed in the door and my maid walked in with a tray for my lunch.I nodded in response as she walked in and bowed. I stared at the plate for food as she set it gently on the table. But I had no appetite, not when my stomach was churning with anticipation.“I need you to go to the royal arts competition and report back to me all that's happening there,” I ordered. My maid paused on her way out of the door, her wary eyes landing on me before bowing and stepping out.I wrangled my hands in my lap as I waited for her to return. My heart was pounding loudly as I heard her footsteps on the stairs and then the knock on the door of my chambers.I tore the door open and dragged her to it. “Tell me!” I urged.“Your Highness, the competition is going smooth
KAEL’S POVThe prison was grim as I strode through the halls, impatient to be back outside under the light of the sun and away from the thick stench.Suddenly the walls went alive with the sounds of agony. Guttural screams echoed off the stone walls, each one filled with pain and begging. As a warrior and a general I had already steeled myself against such sounds, but today, these screams made me pause in my steps. It was a woman’s scream—raw and broken.I turned my head toward the direction of the noise. I had come down here just to oversee Axel’s torture and make sure he broke, but now, I was strung with curiosity that led my steps into the depths of the prison. The warden who was leading me through the walls shot me a wary glance but said nothing as he followed. As I got closer to one of the isolated cells and the sounds, the scent of rot and dampness only grew stronger in the air.The iron bars of the cell were wet with moisture, the single torch in the corridor casting shadows.
KAEL’S POVI felt a slight tremor under my skin as I strode out of the pack hospital. My conversation with Rowan played on my mind.I hope he got my message loud and clear because I wouldn't want him getting between Isabelle and me. Now that she is with me, I would like to keep her as mine.I pushed the thought back as I remembered Tristan’s last command. I need to pay the spy Axel a visit. The prison reeked of blood, sweat, and decay as the warden led me through the halls. The air hugged thick with the metallic stench of pain and suffering, and the dim torchlight in the warden's hands was hardly enough to light the long dark hallways. I strode through the narrow corridor, my boots echoing against the cold floor. The guards standing at the door of his cell gave me a salute as I waited for the warden to unlock the heavy iron door.As the gate screeched open, I stepped in leaning down to get through the low bar.Once my eyes adjusted to the low light, I saw Axel slumped against the woo
ISABELLE’S POVThe dim candle cast long shadows across the stone walls of the bathhouse, as I stared down the person standing in front of me. Her body was rigid as she took another step out of the shadows, her piercing gaze fixed on me, but I could see the slight tension in her shoulders. She was trying to hide it, but I knew.“You don’t look pleased to see me,” I said, leaning casually against the bathtub. I trailed my fingers over the marble top, looking away from him.She let out a loud exhale, crossing her arms. “I never expected you to be so bold,” she admitted. Her eyes flickered to the exposed skin, my neck down to my collarbone, “Are you not afraid that Kael will discover… us?”I let out a loud laughter. “Afraid?” I repeated, tilting my head with a sky smile. “And why would I be afraid?”She narrowed his eyes at me, and I could see her hands curl into fist. “Because if he finds out, it won’t end well for either of us.”My smirk deepened. “Oh, you misunderstand everything. Ka
ISABELLE’S POVThe morning light streamed through the tall windows of my chambers, as I stirred in the silk sheets. The heat from last night still lingered in the air. I turned with exhaustion, my movement sending tiny shocks through her muscles and my mind playing a reminder of Kael’s hands on my body, his lips tracing wet kisses along my skin.A gentle knock on the door pulled me away from the memories as I quickly sat up, pulling the sheets closer to my body.“My Lady,” my maid's soft voice called through the door. One of my maids stepped inside, a basin of warm water in her hands. Her cheeks flushed red with heat as her gaze landed on the scattered bed and my naked body was barely covered by the sheets.“What do you want?” I murmured, stretching my hands over my head lazily. She quickly averted her gaze, setting the basin down on a nearby table. “General Kael tended to you this morning,” she said. “He cleaned your wounds and ensured you were comfortable before leaving.”My lips
KAEL’S POVI could feel the light of dawn seeping through the curtains, casting a golden glow across the princess's chambers. I stirred awake, my body still warm from the lingering heat of the Isabelle sprawled beside me.I looked down at Isabelle, lying asleep against me, her dark lashes resting against her cheeks, and her breathing slow and even. Something tightened in my chest from the sight of her, so calm and vulnerable in her sleep. For a moment, I just watched her, memorizing every detail and feature of her face. The way her lips were slightly parted, the gentle rise and fall of her chest, the faint bruises along her collarbone. I reached out without thinking, my fingers trailing over her skin, before pulling back. I carefully pulled the blanket up, making sure she was well covered.I wanted to stay. But I couldn't.I quietly slipped out of bed, slowly shrugged my clothes back on and cast one last glance at Isabelle before I left.Once I was fully dressed, I slipped through th
ISABELLE’S POVThe warm steam hung in the air, wrapping me in heat as I leaned against the edge of the bath. Kael stood across from me, his body stiff and his shoulders tense as if he wanted to run away at any moment. I smirked at his obvious discomfort, finding his hesitation cute."You look like you're preparing for battle, General." I teased, lazily running my fingers across the water.Kael let out a sharp breath. "I don't think we should be doing this, princess." He whispered I raised an eyebrow, my eyes shining with amusement. "And yet, here you are."He hesitated for a moment then he shook his head with a defeated chuckle. "You’re relentless.""I would prefer you use the term determined."He laughed his chest rumbling with the low sound and I used the moment to move closer to him, As I closed the distance between us, Kael tensed slightly but still, he didn't pull away. I suddenly turned around, slowly prying the straps of my dress over my shoulder. He let out a gasp, but coul
ISABELLE’S POVThe air between us was heavy with tension as I stood over Axel with a sly smile. “You need to start talking right now,” I muttered. He looked up at me, his body shaking with rage. I could see he desperately wanted to hurt me, raising his hands towards me with force but the chains held him back. His face was pale from blood loss, but his eyes were locked on mine, flashing with warning and danger.“You think you can endure this, don’t you?” I murmured, “you really think I would let you die so easily and escape your punishment for your crimes?”“There's nothing you can do to make you tell you anything.” He snarled.I chuckled, a low sound that echoed through the room. “You are telling me everything you know.” I was warned. He smirked, but I could see his eyes falter when I pulled out the same poisoned arrow he fired and tried to use to assassinate me.The tip was still stained with Rowan's blood and I didn't bother to clean it. I want him to suffer his same crimes.I trail
