Chapter 4

Author: Peachy
Aria's POV

The heat of the fire scorched my face.

I stared at Chloe, pinned under the burning rubble, my feet nailed to the ground.

Two minutes ago, I was praying to be free of this woman, to escape her and her selfish brother forever.

But watching her about to be consumed by flames… my conscience screamed.

I was a healer. I couldn’t just watch someone burn alive.

“Aria! Help me!” Chloe’s sobs were ragged, hysterical.

I gritted my teeth. I ripped off my coat, covered my mouth, and ran into the flames.

The smoke was so thick I couldn’t see.

I rushed to her side and dug my fingers under the massive wooden pillar pinning her legs.

With every last bit of strength I had, I heaved, lifting the pillar just an inch.

“Crawl! Now!” I roared, my voice raw.

Chloe scrambled free.

I grabbed her arm and dragged her toward the exit.

We were inches from escaping.

CRACK!

A sharp snap echoed from above.

A burning section of the roof broke free and came hurtling down, smashing directly into my right shoulder.

White-hot pain shot through my entire body.

I let out a grunt, stumbling out of the shrine with Chloe as we both collapsed.

I clutched my shoulder, a cold sweat instantly soaking through my clothes.

This wasn’t a normal burn.

The beam was reinforced with solid silver. The molten silver instantly burned through my jacket, searing into my flesh.

It wasn’t just the searing pain. It was cutting off my wolf’s ability to heal.

Pain blinded me. I fell to my knees, every breath a ragged, trembling gasp.

The screech of tires echoed across the plaza.

Caleb and his guards burst onto the scene.

“Caleb!” Chloe screamed in terror.

Caleb’s eyes darted between me and Chloe. He saw me, crushed under the silver-laced beam, and a flash of agony and panic crossed his face. “Aria!”

But he only took one step toward me before Chloe let out a piercing shriek. “Caleb! I was so scared! My leg, it hurts so bad!”

Caleb’s feet changed direction instantly.

He lunged toward her, pulling her into a desperate hug, his voice choked with a panic I’d never heard before. “Where are you hurt? Don’t be scared, I’m here! Someone call an ambulance, now!”

I was kneeling less than ten feet away from them. My shoulder was a mess of torn flesh. I could hear the sizzle of the silver eating into my skin.

Caleb, still clutching a perfectly fine Chloe, turned his head to look at me. His eyes were full of pained reassurance. “Aria, hang on! The medics are almost here, I promise you’ll be okay!”

I bit my lip, my face pale, too much in pain to even make a sound.

He cared. Of course, he cared. But when it came to a choice, I was always the one left behind.

The ride down the mountain felt like an eternity.

When the pack healer was finally cleaning the silver shards out of my wound, the sheer agony made me pass out.

The next morning.

I woke up in a guest room at the villa.

“Luna, the wound is too deep. The healer said you need to stay in bed for the next two weeks.” Tessa, the maid, stood by my bed with red-rimmed eyes, holding a glass of water for me.

I took a weak sip. Before I could speak, the sound of a furious argument erupted outside.

I frowned. “What’s going on out there?”

Tessa’s face went pale. She stammered, afraid to say.

I threw on a robe, ignoring the tearing pain in my shoulder, and made my way to the first-floor entrance hall.

The main doors were wide open.

Outside, the yard was packed with a mob of over a hundred pack members.

They were furious, some even holding protest signs.

“Bring out Chloe! Make her answer for this!”

“The sacred torch hasn't fallen in centuries! The fire only started because she touched the forbidden sigil in the inner sanctum!”

“It’s blasphemy against the Moon Goddess! She must be punished!”

So the fire wasn’t an accident.

I stood in the shadows behind the door, watching Chloe hide behind Caleb.

She was white as a sheet, clutching his sleeve, all of her usual arrogance gone.

Caleb’s face was stone. He stood on the steps, his Alpha presence the only thing holding the crowd back.

“I will personally fund the complete reconstruction of the shrine, with double the cost,” Caleb said, his voice cold, trying to buy his way out of it.

“This isn’t about money! Someone must answer for the Moon Goddess’s anger!” the lead elder shouted, shaking his staff. “If the Alpha shields the guilty, then we won’t recognize this Alpha!”

The crowd erupted in another roar of protest.

Caleb’s expression darkened completely. He rubbed his temples in frustration. His eyes flickered and caught sight of me.

He turned and walked back inside, right up to me.

He glanced at my heavily bandaged shoulder, which was already bleeding through.

“Is the wound any better?” he asked flatly.

“What are you going to do about them?” I didn’t answer his question. I just stared at him.

“The mob is out of control. We have to give them something to calm them down.” A flicker of guilt crossed his eyes as he reached out to gently stroke my cheek. “Aria, could you go out there for Chloe? Just explain it to them. Tell them you were weak, that you stumbled and knocked over the torch by accident. They’ll see you’re injured. They won’t do anything to you.”

My eyes widened. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You want me to take the fall for her?”

“It’s just for show,” he said, pulling me into a hug. “I’ll handle the rest.”

  • The Luna He Marked To Silence the Truth   Chapter 20

Caleb's POVOn the northern border, the snow came earlier than usual this year. The wind threw icy pellets against the windshield of the SUV."Alpha, here's the battle report from the Rogue stronghold," my Beta second-in-command said, handing me the file. His voice was low. He didn't dare look at me.I took the file, glanced at the numbers, signed it, and tossed it onto the passenger seat.My Beta turned up the heat, but he still didn't speak. He didn't know, and he didn't dare ask, about the necklace I'd been clutching in my coat pocket for the entire drive. It was old, the plating worn and dull, a tiny crack on one edge.A cheap thing I’d bought years ago with my first Alpha stipend.I never thought this necklace would become my only comfort.Late at night, when the camp was quiet, I would sit alone in the truck, rubbing it between my fingers for hours.I'd close my eyes and see her again, at that Pack Full Moon Party. The lights, the music, the crowd. And her, in a white dress, the

Aria's POVRain hammered against the windowpane.I pulled back the curtains. A man was standing under the eaves across the street.Soaked to the bone. Motionless. Like a gray stone statue. It was Caleb.I threw on a coat, grabbed an umbrella, and went down into the rain."How long have you been standing here?" I stopped in front of him. The umbrella shielded most of his face.He looked up. His eyes were as red as if they'd been soaked in blood. Rain, or something else, dripped down his jaw. The once-proud Alpha was now just a pathetic, sodden mess."I wanted to see you one more time," his voice was shaking. "Aria, please. Just look at me. Please."His tone, his expression... it was exactly the same as when he used to wrap his lies in a package of false devotion.I stared at him for a long time. I couldn't even summon the energy to be angry.I pushed the umbrella into his hand."Caleb, I don't hate you." My voice was flat. A final verdict. "But I will never love you again. My wolf has R

Aria's POVThe party ended close to midnight.Julian opened the car door for me, but he didn't start the engine."Not driving tonight," he said, loosening his tie and tossing it in the back seat. "Let's walk. It's only a few blocks."I frowned. "You've been drinking.""It's an excuse," he said with a lazy smile, but his eyes held a seriousness I couldn't quite read. "Walk with me."The night air was cool. The streetlights stretched our shadows long behind us.We walked side by side, neither of us mentioning the showdown at the party, or Caleb's grim face, or Rowan's trembling hands."You didn't have to help me today. I could have handled it myself," I joked, trying to break the silence."I know," Julian said, turning to look at me, a slight smile on his lips. "Just helping out. Taking out the trash for you.""Helping out?""Mmm, helping out," he repeated, his tone so light it made it sound like nothing, but it was strangely comforting. He stopped when we reached my apartment building.

Aria's POV"These are rare healing herbs. You've always been weak, you need to build up your strength."The security guard had stopped him, but his voice still carried through the glass doors into the lobby.I saw the whole scene as I was passing through.Caleb stood at the entrance, the hem of his trench coat flapping in the wind. He held a paper bag, his eyes filled with a hopeful, almost fawning look."Please, just give this to her. I had someone bring these rare herbs from the border," he said to the guard, his voice stripped of all its former Alpha command, leaving only a pathetic plea.I didn't stop. I walked right past him."Aria," he called my name, his voice trembling with hope.I didn't look back. The guard tried to hand me the bag. I waved him off. "Throw it away."From behind me, I heard a soft, muffled sound, like something being crushed. This scene had repeated itself countless times over the past two weeks.Another time, I was at the pharmacy downstairs when I saw Rowan

Aria's POVThe numbers on the report blurred together.I'd been staring at the screen for five minutes and hadn't read a single word. The Council mandate was issued three days ago.The Alpha of Silverpaw, who was supposed to remain in his territory for two full years, petitioned the Lycan Council to leave his territory early. He cited Pack merits.I read the notice over and over, then crumpled it up and threw it in the trash. It didn't matter if he came or not. That's what I told myself. But for the next few days, I found myself strangely sensitive to every footstep outside my office. This afternoon, my assistant knocked and came in, a strange look on her face."Ms. Aria, there's a gentleman downstairs to see you." She paused, lowering her voice. "He says his name is Caleb."The hand holding my pen froze. The nib dug into the report, leaving a sharp, black line."Send him up," I heard myself say. My voice was flat. So flat, it sounded like a stranger's.When the elevator doors opened,

Aria's POV"Okay." I looked into Julian's deep eyes and said the word.No hesitation. No lingering attachment to the past.A week later, Julian and I arrived in the Lycan Capital. The air here smelled of money and power. But with Julian's powerful backing, I didn't have to look up to anyone. The top families and the Council's procurement officers all came to me.In just over a year, my pharmaceutical company grew like a force of nature, growing into the largest botanical supplier in the Capital. My healing remedies became exclusive to the Lycan Royal Court.I was completely independent.I sent Aunt Diana huge dividends. The numbers in my bank account were enough to buy any mansion in the Capital.I sometimes heard news of people I used to know.Chloe had gone mad. Caleb had personally sent her to a remote mental institution on the border, permanently stripping her of the Pack name. She was now a true Rogue, despised by all.The day I heard that news, I was drinking black coffee by my p
