Chapter 3

Author: Peachy
Aria's POV

“Caleb.” I didn’t touch the soup. I just stared at him. “What do you want to say?”

His fingers tightened on the bowl.

He looked away, setting the soup down on the table.

“I guess I can’t hide anything from you. The Full Moon Festival is in two days. Chloe needs to go up the mountain to the Moon Goddess Shrine to pray. It’s her coming-of-age.”

I watched him, my face a cold mask.

“The shrine’s rules say no males are allowed to accompany her. I’m worried you’re too weak to make it, so I had Rowan prepare a special strengthening tonic. I need you to go with her the day after tomorrow. I’ll only feel safe if you’re there.”

It hit me like a ton of bricks.

I was a healing herbalist. I knew better than anyone that after a wolfsbane-induced termination, a body’s veins are fragile. A potent tonic like this was poison.

Drinking it would only make the residual toxins in my body rage. The pain would be unbearable.

But Caleb didn’t care.

He didn’t care if I was in agony. He didn’t care that I’d just lost his child.

He only cared if I could get back on my feet and play bodyguard for his precious sister.

I closed my eyes, forcing down the bitter taste rising in my throat.

“Fine.” I opened my eyes. “I’ll go with her.”

If I was leaving, I didn’t want any more trouble.

I just had to survive a few more days. Then I would be free.

Two days later. Early morning.

The wind on the path to the Moon Goddess Shrine was biting cold.

By the SUV, Caleb was carefully zipping up Chloe’s expensive windbreaker.

He turned, saw me, and immediately walked over to pull my collar tight. “It’s cold on the mountain. If you get tired, have the guards help you. Don’t push yourself.” His voice was full of concern, but he was still sending me—a woman who’d just had a forced termination—up a mountain in the freezing wind with his sister.

I stood there in a thin, old coat, a dull, stabbing pain still radiating from my lower abdomen.

I pulled open the car door and got in the back without a word.

Chloe followed right after me.

The second the door closed, the sweet act vanished. She shot me a look of pure contempt and let out a soft, sharp scoff.

Seeing her undisguised hatred, it all clicked.

She didn’t hate me because I was a low-ranking herbalist.

She hated me because of Rowan.

Because two years ago, Rowan was supposed to be my mate.

And she was jealous that I had once held his heart.

The SUV bounced along the rough mountain road all day.

Every jolt pulled at my unhealed insides.

By the time we reached the shrine at sunset, my legs were heavy as lead.

Every bone in my body ached.

I couldn’t take another step.

“I’ll go in and pray by myself. Don’t follow me and ruin the mood.” Chloe shot me a disgusted look, gathered her skirt, and followed the priestess into the inner sanctum.

I leaned against a stone pillar outside, completely drained, gasping for air.

In the center of the courtyard stood a giant, sacred moon tree.

Its branches were covered in prayer tablets, left by generations of werewolves seeking blessings.

A gust of wind rustled the tablets, making them clink together.

My eyes drifted upward, landing on the highest, most prominent branch of the tree.

A brand-new prayer tablet hung there.

The last rays of sunset hit the wood, illuminating the deep, powerful carving.

I knew that handwriting.

For two years, I’d seen it on documents he signed for me. On love letters he wrote to me.

Caleb had carved it himself.

“May the Moon Goddess’s light protect Chloe’s mate bond, night after night.”

I stared at the words.

Hundreds of tablets, holding countless prayers.

As Alpha of the Silverpaw pack, he hadn’t prayed for our prosperity.

He hadn’t even mentioned the child he’d just ordered killed.

He climbed the highest branch of the sacred tree just to carve his sister’s name.

My heart, in that moment, became a dead, empty desert.

I closed my eyes, letting the cold mountain wind blow straight through me.

“BOOM!”

Suddenly, a deafening explosion ripped through the shrine.

Screams of terror followed.

“Fire! The sacred torch fell!”

“Run!”

My eyes snapped open.

Thick black smoke poured from the heavy wooden doors of the shrine.

Blinding red flames devoured everything in sight.

Fanned by the wind, the fire spread with terrifying speed.

A few priests stumbled out of the doors, covered in ash, coughing violently.

“Put it out! Get the guards from down the mountain!”

I instinctively turned to run down the steps for help.

The moment I took the first step.

“Help! Somebody, help me!”

A piercing scream came from deep within the inferno.

I stopped dead and turned back.

Through the collapsing main gate, I could see the inner sanctum’s roof had burned through.

A massive, flaming beam crashed down.

Chloe fell in the sea of fire, her legs pinned beneath a burning pillar.

Flames were already licking at her jacket.

Her face was black with soot, her perfect makeup a muddy mess of tears.

She stared at me, her eyes wide with terror, and reached a desperate hand toward me. Her scream was raw and absolute.

“Aria! Save me!”

  • The Luna He Marked To Silence the Truth   Chapter 20

Caleb's POVOn the northern border, the snow came earlier than usual this year. The wind threw icy pellets against the windshield of the SUV."Alpha, here's the battle report from the Rogue stronghold," my Beta second-in-command said, handing me the file. His voice was low. He didn't dare look at me.I took the file, glanced at the numbers, signed it, and tossed it onto the passenger seat.My Beta turned up the heat, but he still didn't speak. He didn't know, and he didn't dare ask, about the necklace I'd been clutching in my coat pocket for the entire drive. It was old, the plating worn and dull, a tiny crack on one edge.A cheap thing I’d bought years ago with my first Alpha stipend.I never thought this necklace would become my only comfort.Late at night, when the camp was quiet, I would sit alone in the truck, rubbing it between my fingers for hours.I'd close my eyes and see her again, at that Pack Full Moon Party. The lights, the music, the crowd. And her, in a white dress, the

Aria's POVRain hammered against the windowpane.I pulled back the curtains. A man was standing under the eaves across the street.Soaked to the bone. Motionless. Like a gray stone statue. It was Caleb.I threw on a coat, grabbed an umbrella, and went down into the rain."How long have you been standing here?" I stopped in front of him. The umbrella shielded most of his face.He looked up. His eyes were as red as if they'd been soaked in blood. Rain, or something else, dripped down his jaw. The once-proud Alpha was now just a pathetic, sodden mess."I wanted to see you one more time," his voice was shaking. "Aria, please. Just look at me. Please."His tone, his expression... it was exactly the same as when he used to wrap his lies in a package of false devotion.I stared at him for a long time. I couldn't even summon the energy to be angry.I pushed the umbrella into his hand."Caleb, I don't hate you." My voice was flat. A final verdict. "But I will never love you again. My wolf has R

Aria's POVThe party ended close to midnight.Julian opened the car door for me, but he didn't start the engine."Not driving tonight," he said, loosening his tie and tossing it in the back seat. "Let's walk. It's only a few blocks."I frowned. "You've been drinking.""It's an excuse," he said with a lazy smile, but his eyes held a seriousness I couldn't quite read. "Walk with me."The night air was cool. The streetlights stretched our shadows long behind us.We walked side by side, neither of us mentioning the showdown at the party, or Caleb's grim face, or Rowan's trembling hands."You didn't have to help me today. I could have handled it myself," I joked, trying to break the silence."I know," Julian said, turning to look at me, a slight smile on his lips. "Just helping out. Taking out the trash for you.""Helping out?""Mmm, helping out," he repeated, his tone so light it made it sound like nothing, but it was strangely comforting. He stopped when we reached my apartment building.

Aria's POV"These are rare healing herbs. You've always been weak, you need to build up your strength."The security guard had stopped him, but his voice still carried through the glass doors into the lobby.I saw the whole scene as I was passing through.Caleb stood at the entrance, the hem of his trench coat flapping in the wind. He held a paper bag, his eyes filled with a hopeful, almost fawning look."Please, just give this to her. I had someone bring these rare herbs from the border," he said to the guard, his voice stripped of all its former Alpha command, leaving only a pathetic plea.I didn't stop. I walked right past him."Aria," he called my name, his voice trembling with hope.I didn't look back. The guard tried to hand me the bag. I waved him off. "Throw it away."From behind me, I heard a soft, muffled sound, like something being crushed. This scene had repeated itself countless times over the past two weeks.Another time, I was at the pharmacy downstairs when I saw Rowan

  • The Luna He Marked To Silence the Truth   Chapter 16

Aria's POVThe numbers on the report blurred together.I'd been staring at the screen for five minutes and hadn't read a single word. The Council mandate was issued three days ago.The Alpha of Silverpaw, who was supposed to remain in his territory for two full years, petitioned the Lycan Council to leave his territory early. He cited Pack merits.I read the notice over and over, then crumpled it up and threw it in the trash. It didn't matter if he came or not. That's what I told myself. But for the next few days, I found myself strangely sensitive to every footstep outside my office. This afternoon, my assistant knocked and came in, a strange look on her face."Ms. Aria, there's a gentleman downstairs to see you." She paused, lowering her voice. "He says his name is Caleb."The hand holding my pen froze. The nib dug into the report, leaving a sharp, black line."Send him up," I heard myself say. My voice was flat. So flat, it sounded like a stranger's.When the elevator doors opened,

Aria's POV"Okay." I looked into Julian's deep eyes and said the word.No hesitation. No lingering attachment to the past.A week later, Julian and I arrived in the Lycan Capital. The air here smelled of money and power. But with Julian's powerful backing, I didn't have to look up to anyone. The top families and the Council's procurement officers all came to me.In just over a year, my pharmaceutical company grew like a force of nature, growing into the largest botanical supplier in the Capital. My healing remedies became exclusive to the Lycan Royal Court.I was completely independent.I sent Aunt Diana huge dividends. The numbers in my bank account were enough to buy any mansion in the Capital.I sometimes heard news of people I used to know.Chloe had gone mad. Caleb had personally sent her to a remote mental institution on the border, permanently stripping her of the Pack name. She was now a true Rogue, despised by all.The day I heard that news, I was drinking black coffee by my p
