Chapter 1

The calming herbs slipped from the corners of my mouth, one by one.

Raymond pried my jaw open, his eyes red, and crammed the rest of them in.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream.

I swallowed them down, quiet, and even tried to soothe him. "It's okay."

That was when our pup wailed.

"Sorry, Mommy. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to get hurt."

Raymond went rigid. The fog cleared from his eyes in an instant.

He moved on instinct, helping me throw the herbs back up, then turned and scooped the pup into his arms.

"I'm sorry, Aurora. I didn't mean to do that…"

The guilt in his eyes cut me deeper than anything.

Ever since I was diagnosed with postpartum depression, Raymond had let almost every pack matter slide.

He cared for the pup. He cared for me. He stretched himself thin between us.

And little by little, I became the burden the Blood Moon Pack whispered about.

"Raymond's the Alpha. He's supposed to lead this pack to greatness. He can't pour everything he has into one woman."

"What woman doesn't bear children? What makes her so special? Plenty of us have given birth without falling apart."

"Exactly. She's just milking it. The Alpha's wasting all his time on her."

They were right. I wasn't a fit Luna. I wasn't a fit mother.

I was the one who needed taking care of.

That was when the door swung open and Charlotte walked in.

The moment Raymond saw her, something flickered in his eyes. Guilt.

But the girl gave him a long, pitying look, then turned to me with tears already streaming down her face.

"Luna, it was just a pup. Plenty of she-wolves have them. The Alpha is being driven mad by you. When are you going to stop?"

"He's exhausted. Please, just let him be."

My breath came short. The walls were closing in.

Raymond saw it and waved the maid over to take the pup. Without thinking, he reached for more calming herbs.

But Charlotte caught his arm.

"Luna, the Alpha has a pack to run. Stop using these little stunts to steal his attention. If you won't think of him, I will."

The herbs scattered across the floor.

Raymond's hand fell back to his side. He turned and walked out with her.

At the door, his eyes flicked to me one last time. Disappointment.

That was when I remembered what the High Priestess had given me.

A single sprig of wolfsbane.

Once swallowed, the poison would work slowly. Three days, and it would be over.

I'd hidden it away.

He went rigid."What… what are you saying?"I spoke slowly. Clearly."When you were wounded fighting that rival pack, your fertility was destroyed. The High Priestess told me. She told me you would almost certainly never father a child. And if you did, the female would almost certainly miscarry.""I didn't tell you because I didn't want to break you. I drank the tonics in secret. I went through the artificial conception treatments in secret. I bore the pain, body and mind, all of it. To protect your pride as Alpha. To give your pack an heir."I looked at him. There was no longing left in me."Raymond. The love I had for you, that is the size of the hatred I have now. Your apologies, your atonement—they are jokes. I will never forgive you. Not ever."I severed the mate bond myself. He dropped to the floor like he'd been struck. He couldn't believe it. Andre might have been the only child he would ever have.He had destroyed everything with his own hands. He had pushed away the woman who

The healer told us the wolfsbane had damaged my brain. I'd lost everything I knew. When he'd finished, Raymond looked at me, eyes red."Aurora. I'm your mate.""It's all right. No matter what you become, I'll be with you. I'll never hurt you again…"He reached out to touch my hand.Something in me recoiled. I leaned away from him.He went still. The Alpha who had always stood so tall looked, in that moment, like a lost child. His hand hung in the air. He couldn't bring himself to come closer. He couldn't bring himself to take it back."Aurora. Charlotte put a spell on me. From beginning to end, the only one I've loved is you. The only mate I'll ever have is you.""That bitch is dealt with. She'll never come near you. She'll never hurt you again."He pulled the ring from his pocket. The promise ring that had once been mine."This is yours. It always was. Aurora, give me one more chance. Let me do this right."A tear rolled down his cheek.I felt nothing. Then my eyes caught the ring, an

Charlotte jumped. When she saw who it was, the cold sweat broke down her face."A—Alpha. You're back early."She forced a smile, scrambling for ground."Is there pack business? I'll—I'll make you some coffee."Before she finished, his hand cracked across her face."Charlotte. Tell me you weren't just saying what I heard. Where is my pup? What did you give him to mask his scent? I can't feel him. Where is he?"She shook all over. The words tumbled out."I gave him an herb that masks scent… and I threw him in the well…"The blood left his face."You bitch. Take me. Now."He dragged her by the arm, hard enough to crush bone.He saw the stone weight on top of the well, and rage tore through him.The pup Aurora had nearly died to bring into this world. Charlotte'd murdered him."Take her. Lock her in the cellar. Throw her in with the three starved hounds."The pack guards pulled the body out of the water. They turned to him and shook their heads."Alpha. The heir Andre is gone…"He stumbled

"Alpha! The Luna has ingested wolfsbane. She's dying. Come now!"Raymond gripped the phone. A roar filled his ears.He didn't think. He drove.---Outside the operating room, he paced like a caged thing. He tried to push through the doors. Pack members held him back."Alpha, please—the wolfsbane hasn't reached her heart yet. We're fighting for her."He didn't hear them. He stared at the ground, eyes red, muttering."No. Aurora loves me and the pup. She wouldn't do this. She wouldn't…"Every second was a knife.A Beta came running, breathless."Alpha. The Luna's father—the funeral home sent these over. His ashes."Raymond's eyes snapped wide."What? When did this happen?"The Beta checked the paperwork, hesitating."It would have been… last night. While you were with Miss Charlotte…"The world cracked.Last night, he had been losing himself in Charlotte's body while Aurora called and called.Ever since she fell ill, she'd done that. Like she couldn't be without him.But last night, his

The blood drained out of my face. I reached through the bond, screaming for my pup.Nothing. No answer. His scent was gone.I looked up and met Charlotte's smug eyes. Lightning struck me.It was her. She'd taken Andre. She'd masked his scent."You—you evil bitch! Where is my son? Bring him back!"I lunged. She crumpled, all trembling and tears."Luna, I know you're upset that the Alpha cares for me, but Andre was with the maids when we left. You can't blame me for this."A mother's instinct doesn't lie. My pup was in danger. I knew it.I tried to push past Raymond. He raised his hand and slapped me hard across the face."Aurora, get a hold of yourself! You've had it out for Charlotte from the start. I'm starting to wonder if your depression is even real.""If you so much as touch a hair on her head again, I'll cast you out of the pack!"My ears rang. Blood touched the corner of my mouth. The tears came in heavy, helpless drops.I shook my head, biting down on the pain. "Raymond, please

The next morning, the hospital called. My father was gone.I stumbled through the doors shaking so badly I could barely stand."How… how could this happen?"The healer pulled down his mask and let out a long breath."Cardiac arrest. He was severely agitated. We did everything we could."I held my father's cold hand. The tears came before I could stop them.He was the last person in this world who was mine. And now he was gone too.I pulled out my phone and dialed Raymond. Again. And again."The number you have dialed is currently unavailable…"The recorded voice droned on, indifferent. After the hundredth call went unanswered, I gave up. I said goodbye to my father. When I went to gather his things, his phone slipped out of his pocket. It was still playing a video on a loop. The same video Charlotte had sent me.So that was it. Charlotte had killed my father. The room blurred. I went down. When I came to, I was in a hospital bed.Raymond sat beside me, dark shadows under his eyes. The
