Chapter Sixty Six : The Empty Room

Lucien’s POV

The celebration drums had started long ago. I could hear them pounding from the courtyard—the rhythmic beat that echoed through every stone and wall in the palace. Everyone was already gathered at the mating ceremony. The air smelled of wine, roasted meat, and burning wood.

But my chest was heavy.

I couldn’t join them. I couldn’t pretend.

Not when I had something more important to do.

This was the night we had waited for. The night of distraction. The one chance we had to leave. To disappear. No one would look for us—at least not until the next day. And by then, it would be too late.

I took the back path toward Selene’s quarters, moving quickly but carefully. The corridors were quiet. Most of the guards were at the celebration, which made my steps even lighter. The moonlight poured through the windows, guiding me like a silent companion.

I reached her room.

My heart was pounding.

I knocked once—softly.

No answer.
