The day I turned eighteen was meant to be the best day of my life. Instead, it became the day my heart broke before the full pack.
In my small room, I stood in front of the mirror and ran my shaking hands over the pale blue dress Mrs. Hart had changed for me. It was not new; nothing I had ever was. Though my stepsister, Lila, had said it was out of date months ago and thrown it aside, I found it lovely. The supple material wrapped around my waist and descended to my knees. I genuinely felt rather gorgeous for the first time in years.
Today wasn't only my birthday. My Mate Day was celebrated today.
Every wolf dreamed on it. The Moon Goddess will reveal our destined mate once we turn eighteen. My stomach turned with anxiety and excitement both mixed.
"What if my mate is kind?" I wondered "What if he views me the way my dad did my mother before she passed? What if I at last fit someplace?"
A loud knock broke my ideas.
"Aria!" Lila's yell ripped across the wood. "Come on here. Everyone is waiting."
Not wishing to keep her waiting, I dashed out. People hurried past the packed corridors with heavy trays of food while wolves laughing and chatting filled the pack house alive with activity. The yearly mating ritual was always the most important occasion of the year, and the energy was vibrant.
As I went down the stairs, I kept my head down, attempting to fit in with the décor. Nobody really noticed me anyway; they rarely did. And when they did, it was often only to compare me to Lila, my gorgeous stepsister, the future Luna, and the pack's clearly favorite.
"Look who at last chose to show up," someone sneered.
A few girls chuckled. I dropped my eyes; years of being treated like an outsider had taught me that silence was my greatest protection.
"Maybe she'll get lucky and find a partner today," another muttered.
"Please. Who would want her?"
There was more laughing to come. The words stung and burned the back of my throat, but I pushed myself to keep going.
Then, the room got dead quiet instantly.
My breath stopped. Alpha Damian had just arrived. He was tall, gorgeous, and almost emanated authority. Every woman in the room stared, including me. Though for years I had covertly adored him, I despised myself for it. Not only was it because he was good-looking; it was also because he used to be friendly. At least before he assumed the Alpha mantle. Before the current interrupted him.
His dark eyes scanned the populace. Our eyes connected for a brief, startling second. Something profound inside me moved—a weird warmth, a sudden attraction that caused my skin to burn. He then turned away.
"Of course. Why would the Alpha ever recognize me?" I wondered.
The event started right after. The pack gathered in the yard, surrounding the holy Moon Stone. The moon hung full and brilliant high above, bathing all of us in a historic, silvery light.
The pack elder advanced, his voice resounding.
"Tonight, the Moon Goddess shall reveal the bonds she has chosen."
The throng was energized, and my heart raced wildly against my ribs. Wolves moved forward one by one. Some discovered their mates, some didn't, and deafening cheers followed every find of a pair.
"Aria Blackwood," I heard my name called.
Though I pushed myself to walk ahead into the clearing, my legs almost gave way. The world appeared to be breathless.
Then, it hit me. My senses were overwhelmed by a fragrance: fresh rain, sharp pine, and pure, alluring strength. Inside my chest, my wolf came to life and yelled one word that exploded in my head: 'Mate!'
I gasped, my gaze shot upward. Standing right across the courtyard was Alpha Damian. His eyes were wide, sheer surprise flashing across his face as the bond snapped fiercely into place. The whole crowd faded into a blur.
"Mate. My mate. The Alpha is my mate."
One tear slid down my cheek. For one beautiful, fleeting second I thought all my aspirations had at last come true.
Then Damian's face became stony. His eyes lost all warmth and instead showed cold, sparkling hate.
I felt a terrible weight in my chest. Something was seriously wrong here.
My heartbeat echoed in my ears as Kael led me around the castle. Just an hour ago, the grand passageways appeared looked magnificent, now it looked like a warzone. Broken columns littered the floor and the marble floor was stained with blood. Warriors hurried in all directions, carrying the wounded while maids scrambled to put out the fires caused by the assault. Every Lycan we saw bowed for Kael. But they always seemed to gaze at me. Some seemed curious, while others seemed relieved. A few appeared anxious and I couldn't understand why The doors of the throne room came into view. They were large and carved from black oak, featuring silver wolves under a full moon. Just as Kael approached, two guards pulled them open. The room went silent, as all heads were turned towards us. My breathing stopped. The throne room was spectacular. Long silver columns reached toward a domed ceiling covered w
The assassin smiled."There you are," he said. Time felt frozen. The injured guard fell to the ground, blood flowing beneath him. The hooded man moved across his corpse as though it were nothing more than a barrier. His scarlet eyes stayed fixed on mine. Every instinct within me told me to flee. My legs, however, couldn't move."Stay behind me," Elder Rowan said. Despite his age, he moved in front of me, his shoulders squared as he met the invader. "You have no place here." The assassin chuckled lightly."I didn't come for you old man," he said and his eyes moved back toward me. "I came for the girl." My heart pounded violently."Just what do you want from me?" He started smiling more."Your death." He attacked without warning and Rowan pushed me to the side."Run." A deafening bang resonated across the space as Rowan stopped the killer's blade with a s
Kael turned towards the warrior just as I barely had time to get my breath back."Tell the council they should wait." The little Lycan bowed his head."I am afraid they won't agree to that, Your Majesty," the young Lycan responded and Kael's golden eyes turned black. "They're already assembling in the Great Hall." The room fell silent. I looked from Kael to the warrior, my stomach twisting into knots."Maybe..." I started with caution. "Perhaps I should meet them." Both men looked at me. Kael's expression was not readable."No." He said."Still, what if they're here for me—""They are not here because of you," he said and paused. "They are here for what you stand for." His statements froze me."What do I stand for?" Another knock came before he could respond. This time it was softer. Dressed in a dark silver robe embellished with the Lycan crest, an elderly man came inside the room. Thou
Never before had I seen anything quite like it. When Kael at last placed me just inside the entrance of the massive castle, the sheer magnificence of the place made me totally forget how tired I was. With its gleaming polished marble floors under the light of huge crystal chandeliers, the entrance hall stretched further than the eyes could perceive. Tall silver columns stretched up to a vaulted ceiling covered with fine paintings of wolves running under a full moon. It seemed more like an old, magnificent castle than like a fortress. Standing in the middle of it, I suddenly got painfully aware of my own appearance. My dress was torn, thick mud stained the hem, and my hair was a tangled mess from sprinting through the forest. I appeared quite odd, a tattered ghost amid a house of kings."Come," Kael whispered gently. I raced to maintain his extended stride. The Lycan troops flanking the corridor dropped their heads in profound, practic
The Shadow Beast charged. Its roar ripped through the still night, making the forest tremble and causing flocks of birds to erupt into the trees. Trees moaned and swayed, buckling under the sheer force of its speed as it thundered through the thick undergrowth, its red eyes fixed directly on me. I longed to flee, but sheer terror had pinned my feet to the ground."Run! " Kael yelled, putting himself directly in the beast's way when it was mere feet from me. His golden eyes flared with a sudden, chilling intensity, and a deep rumble vibrated in his chest. Then, in a horrific flash of movement, he changed. Bones cracked and popped as his muscles ballooned, and coarse, dark silver fur exploded over his skin. In mere moments, a colossal wolf stood where Kael had been—except he was more than just a wolf. He was a Lycan, nearly double the size of any Alpha, broadcasting an immense, crushing power.Showing off impossibly sharp fangs, he sprang, and the two monstrosities slamme
"You're not who you think you are." The words weighed heavily in the cool evening air, ringing in the calm areas of my mind. I gazed at Kael, desperately looking over his amazing features for any indication this was a cruel joke or some twisted fantasy generated by the trauma of the rejection. Nothing at all. The Lycan King seemed quite somber."What are you talking about?" I murmured, hardly audible. Unblinking, Kael's golden eyes stayed fixed on mine. "Your ancestry." My stomach clenched in agony. "There is nothing remarkable about my family. I am an orphan." His jaw closed firmly, a dark shadow traversing his face."That is just the lie you have been taught to help you follow." His unadulterated confidence in his voice was quite disturbing. For eighteen years I had lived as the Silver Moon Pack's ultimate outsider. I was the frail girl. The charity case dressed in my sister's cast
