Seraphina’s POV

I got out of bed that morning determined not to be afraid of anyone. My wrists were still tender, and one shoulder complained when I pulled my dress over my head, but I refused to stand there thinking about who might come through my door next. Calista had taken enough from the previous night. She was not having the morning too.

I washed carefully, keeping the cloth away from the sore place inside my mouth. There were things I did not understand about what had happened in this ro

  • The Lycan King's White Wolf   34 The Distance I Crossed 2

Lucian’s POVThe hierarchy of the room required little announcement. It existed in the pauses, the depth of a bow, the care with which a man waited for me to finish speaking before answering. Those who had spent years near the throne knew better than to assume proximity granted them equality. My uncle joined the small gathering around me. My mother’s younger brother bowed with more care than he had shown when entering my rooms the previous evening. I received the gesture without comment. He had been told where he stood. I expected him to remember it. The conversation remained harmless for a short while. Then one of the men nearest him lowered his voice.“There has been troubling talk concerning the werewolf packs, Your Majesty.”I looked at him.“What talk?”“The possibility of unrest,” he replied. “An uprising.”A woman beside him glanced towards the people beyond our group before returning her attention to me. The word had sharpened the conversation immediately. I could see it in th

  • The Lycan King's White Wolf   33 The Distance I Crossed

Lucian’s POVMarcel was taking too long. I stood beneath the ballroom lights with a glass in my hand and listened to a man finish paying his respects. I acknowledged him, answered the brief question that followed and allowed him to withdraw before receiving the next guest. Nothing in my manner gave them reason to think my attention was elsewhere. Yet I noticed every movement near the entrance.A servant passed through carrying an empty tray. A couple paused beneath the doorway before joining the gathering. Neither was whom I wanted, and my fingers shifted once against the stem of my glass. I had sent Marcel because leaving the ballroom myself would have interrupted the obligations already waiting for me. He was my Beta, my friend and someone I trusted to bring Seraphina here without making her feel as though she were being summoned for questioning. It should have been a simple arrangement. I would still have preferred to collect her myself.I wanted to see her when she opened the door

  • The Lycan King's White Wolf   32 What My Silence Couldn’t Hide

Seraphina’s POVFor several moments, I did nothing. Then I pressed my hands over my face. That had happened. I lowered them and looked at the door, half hoping it would open again. When it remained closed, embarrassment began working its way through the pleasure. I had told him to stay. I had pulled him closer. There was no point trying to pretend I had merely endured his attention.I stood carefully and straightened my clothes. My hair needed attention too. I smoothed it with both hands, then looked down at the unfinished bed. The linen. I had almost forgotten why I was there.Changing the sheets should have been simple. I had done enough ordinary work that day to manage one bed without difficulty. Yet I kept stopping with fabric in my hands because I remembered his mouth against my neck, or the way he had lifted away the instant he noticed the change in me.I pulled the sheet straight, then had to correct it because I had drawn too much to one side. My concentration was disgraceful.

Seraphina’s POVI was still breathless in Lucian’s arms when he turned me towards him. His words about patience remained close to my ear, and I had no answer for them. My fingers rested against his forearms. I could feel how steady he was while I struggled to manage something as simple as looking at him.He lifted a hand to my face. His thumb brushed my cheek, and his gaze lowered to my mouth before returning to my eyes. There was a pause, small enough that I might have missed it if I had not been watching him so closely. For once, he did not seem entirely certain of what I would permit. Then he kissed me.It was soft. Cautious enough to make my chest ache. I had expected confidence, perhaps the same quiet amusement with which he had unsettled me moments before. Instead, his mouth touched mine as though he was giving me time to decide. I decided by catching his arm and drawing him closer.Lucian’s hand settled at the back of my neck. He kissed me again, more firmly this time, and I ro

Seraphina’s POVI felt his hands settle gently at my waist before I saw him. My fingers stopped on the linen. He drew close enough that warmth reached through the fabric of my dress, and my careful plans for an impersonal errand began falling apart. “Why are you in such a sour mood?” he asked near my ear. His voice was quiet, with a trace of amusement that made me want to elbow him and lean back at the same time.“I am attending to my duties, Your Majesty.” I meant to sound calm. I sounded like someone rehearsing an answer she did not want examined. His thumb shifted against my waist, a small movement that made it difficult to remain interested in the sheet.“I can see that,” Lucian replied. I tried to pull the corner free again. It refused to cooperate. Everything in the room seemed determined to make me stay longer than I wanted, including the part of me enjoying the man behind me.“Then perhaps you could allow me to finish,” I said. His hands eased as I straightened. I could have m

Calista had taken enough from the previous night. She was not having the morning too.I washed carefully, keeping the cloth away from the sore place inside my mouth. There were things I did not understand about what had happened in this room, and there were things I understood far too well. Neither needed to govern how I walked out of it. I could still lift my head. I could still decide what expression people would find on my face.‘Good,’ Isolde said. ‘Shoulders back. We’re not apologising for surviving her.’ I straightened almost without thinking, then caught myself obeying her and laughed. The sound startled me in the quiet room. I had not expected laughter to come so easily after the way I had gone to bed. ‘You sound pleased
