LOGINAriana's POV
“Madam, please come with us.” The maids came in quietly, eyes downcast as they led me into a luxurious room on the third floor.
It has to be the biggest I've ever seen in my life— the rooms at the Alpha's mansion can't even compare. The interior decoration and lighting, it all screamed old money.
“Master instructed that you must have a hot bath—”
“I— I'm okay with just a regular shower.”
“No. We have to follow the master's instructions and that includes you too.” The leading maid said with a note of finality.
I watched as they drew a bath in a marble tub big enough to drown in. Steam curled around the edges of the mirror as I sank into the water, trying not to cry, but every breath felt like breaking glass.
When I stepped out, they personally oiled my skin and helped me into a soft floral gown— white, comfy, and innocent. Looking at my reflection in the mirror, I could easily pass for a princess— if not for the visible dark circles under my eyes.
The maids styled my hair into a beautiful bun and two braids, helped me apply soft make up and boom! Now I could pass for a princess.
While I admired my new looks, my mind suddenly raced to my Dad— questions filled my mind. How was he doing? Is he asleep already or is he still waiting for me to come home? How did he take Lucien's message?
“Dad… I'll make sure this whole thing settles down— for you.”
My line of thoughts was suddenly interrupted by the announcement that dinner was ready. Even though I'd refused it, they warned I had to eat because it was their “master's” order.
I took slow strides into the dinner room which was twice as luxurious as every other place in this mansion. Silver cutleries lined up with a glass of wine I didn't plan to touch, and a steaming cup of herbal tea that smelled faintly of mint and maybe sweet.
“He said it’ll keep you from catching a cold,” one of the maids murmured before leaving.
For a second, I stared at the tea. Why would he care if I get a cold or not?
Then I remembered the contract I'd signed— I belonged to him now and he wanted his new “property” to be healthy.
When I finally sat, my hands still shook. Lucien wasn’t there, but his absence filled the room like smoke.
I forced myself to eat, even though each bite felt like swallowing shame. The house was too quiet— until I heard two maids whispering at the end of the hall— towards the kitchen area.
“…heard she’s staying here for a while.”
“…She’s not even pretty. What did he see in her?”
“Probably a replacement for his late wife—they look alike.”
“Yeah, and she’s below his league. Must be her looks—remember he swore to find her killer?”
“I feel sorry for her. She’ll always live in another woman’s shadow.”
Replacement?
Their voices faded as they noticed I was staring their way, they quickly moved away but their words hung in the air.
I froze, the fork slipped from my fingers. Replacement.
Was that what I was to him?
A stand-in for a dead woman?
My stomach turned. I quickly dropped the fork and went to my room— a guard followed me closely until I entered, then he stood right outside my door.
“Ma'am, don't hesitate to call out if you need anything.” He said.
I just nodded, closed the door then slumped on the bed. It was so soft and cool—
It didn't take me long before sleep took over, guess I was extremely tired.
✷✷✷✷
I woke up to a knock on the door, it was morning already—
The guard walked in, tall and expressionless, holding a folded note.
“For you, miss.”
My hands trembled as I opened it.
It was from Lucien
“Get ready, you'll come with me to dinner tonight and you’ll come to me wearing nothing I didn’t pick for you.”
My breath caught.
“Couldn't he deliver this himself?” the words slipped out.
“He asked to apologize on his behalf, he was caught up in work last night and couldn't return home.”
Apologize? Did he really say that?
“Oh… he didn't have to explain himself though.” I stammered.
The guard left and almost immediately, the maids hurried in— and just like that, the day started. It moved in a blur that I couldn't even remember all I was doing until it was 4pm and I was getting dolled up for the dinner with Lucien.
As soon as I was done, a sleek black limousine came for me and soon, we were at the venue. The door slid open, as I alighted, an arm reached out to support— it was him, Lucien. Looking dashing in his black suit with silver accents.
“Are you going to admire me until my arm starts hurting?” he said, clearing his throat.
“I'm sorry…” I took his arm.
As I finally stepped out, his eyes traveled down my body. “I knew I made the right choice with this outfit,” He said proudly.
“Can we get this over with? Breathing the same air as you is already tiring.” I blurted out, expecting one of his deteriorating words but surprisingly, he said nothing.
He led me into the hall. As we walked side by side, all eyes turned to us. The hall, filled with men and women of power, stared at us as if in awe. Soon, men trooped forward to greet Lucien. He introduced them to me as “business partners” and when they asked who I was, he calmly said; I was his woman.
“My lady, may I have a moment? There’s an old bald man waiting for me upstairs.” Lucien pointed towards the stairs and I saw a short man in black suit— truly bald.
I was going to laugh but I suddenly remembered where I was so I had to pull myself together.
“I said that to make you laugh though and failed woefully— maybe I should practice my jokes a bit more.” He gently tucked the strands of hair behind my ear.
“I—”
“Chairman…” a voice called, cutting my statement short.
“That's my call— I'll be right back. Don't move,” I nodded as I watched him walk away with a guard.
I blinked— why was he being so sweet? Was this his approach? By the way, I needed to speak with him concerning my father— I just hope he comes back on time.
I took in a deep breath, sharp and nervous as I looked around. Eyes were still on me but they quickly looked away as they met mine.
“Hey… who do we have here? If it's not the disgraced mate herself—”
I turned to see Vivianne…
And
Elias!
AdrianaLiving with Lucien was like standing too close to a fire. You never quite burned. But the heat never stopped either. It had been weeks since the ball where we danced, weeks since that moment on the floor where the air between us had turned dangerous. Since then, nothing has happened. And yet… everything had changed. It was quite obvious at first but slowly, I started to notice it.Lucien was distant now. Carefully distant. He still trained me. Still took me to events. Still watched me like a hawk whenever we were in the same room. But emotionally? There was a wall.A thick one.And the frustrating part was that I knew it was deliberate. He wasn’t avoiding me completely. That would have been easier to understand.Instead, he stayed just close enough to make me notice every little thing. The way his hand would brush my back when guiding me through a doorway. The way he would stand slightly too close when explaining something. The way his eyes lingered just a second longer than n
LucienI should have pushed her off the moment she kissed me.That would have been the logical thing to do.The responsible thing. The only thing a man in my position should do when a drunk woman, one who lived under his protection, one whose future was tied to his decisions, one who wasn't supposed to be this close to him…climbed onto his lap and kissed him like she had nothing left to lose.Instead, I froze. What really surprised me was the fact that I didn't even want to move. This moment was like a dream come true…one of my many crazy dreams where she had haunted me nights after night.Adriana hovered above me on the bed, her dark hair falling loosely around her shoulders, the silk robe barely tied around her waist. Her breathing was uneven, her cheeks flushed from wine and emotion. And her lips were still dangerously close to mine.My hands remained around her wrists, though the grip had loosened.“Adriana,” I said slowly, half expecting her to jump in shock at what just happene
Lucien It's been almost a month since Adriana attended the ball… almost a month since I publicly paraded her in front of those power hungry wolves and every single time we get invited to a ball, I feel a mixture of pride and threat. She was getting used to this glamouous life of mine… getting used to being treated like she mattered and while that shouldn't make me proud, it did for some reason. In the past she usually cower with fear and turn pale instantly whenever she sees anyone who once had dealings with her father but now after the intense coaching from me, she was now an expert in reading faces, in being intimidating, just like I taught her.It was great…but to some extent it wasn't.She was no longer the meek little girl I'd brought in, the girl I fought to hide my attraction for.Her growth as a person made her so attractive and it was getting too hard to pretend that I didn’t notice. It wasn’t just the dresses. It wasn’t the way heads turned when she entered a room now, the
Adriana POVMorning in Lucien’s house has never once felt like morning. It felt like surveillance. The curtains were half-drawn when I opened my eyes, sunlight slipping in through the narrow gap like it had been rationed. For a second, I didn’t move. I just listened.Silence.Not peaceful silence. Controlled silence. It was the type of silence I was used to ever since I moved in here.I pushed myself up slowly, the events of last night replaying whether I wanted them to or not. The party. The stares. Vivianne’s calculating gaze. Lucien’s voice at my ear, calm and infuriating. You did well.As if I were a trained animal.I swung my legs off the bed and reached for the glass of water he’d left on the nightstand. It was still there.Of course it was.He noticed everything.I hated that part most. After dressing, I stepped into the hallway. The house staff moved quietly, efficiently, like shadows trained not to cast attention on themselves. I wondered how many of them had been here long
Lucien POVI had learned a long time ago that power wasn’t loud.It didn’t shout or demand attention. It waited. It observed. It let people reveal themselves before deciding how to break them.Tonight was a perfect example. As Adriana walked beside me through the crowd, heads turned, some in disbelief, others in calculation. I felt it immediately, the shift in the room. The same men who once laughed at her father now measured every word they spoke, every look they cast her way.Good.That was the point. Her arm was stiff against mine, her posture proud but forced, like a blade held too tightly in a trembling hand. She thought she was enduring this for her father alone. She didn’t realize she was already learning the rules of survival.I already told her this before that no woman…no person at all, affiliated with we would ever have to walk with their head bowed down in embarrassment. And she was doing better than expected. When Vivianne approached us, I felt the tension in Adriana’s bo
Adriana pov Parties weren't essentially my thing and since the last incident I had with Vivianne, I've gotten slightly scared of what to expect at parties like this but for some reason, I feel oddly at ease as the doors opened and Lucien and I walked in.Of course there were the usual curious glances... The whispers, the stares that screamed "Impossible!" But I had my chin high and my face staunt as I walked alongside Lucien. He turned his head to me and gave me a soft stare, a look that if I didn't know him too well, I would have assumed to be a look of love and care. But I knew what scheming bastard he was.He was putting up an act... Acting like we actually had something going just so that the gossip about me being his captive would die down.He was a good actor.. I'll give him that.A familiar looking middle aged man walked towards us, his stare strictly on Lucien and finally he paused."Mr Blackwell... Thank you for finally gracing my invitation."Lucien paused and smiled at him
Adriana pov It's been three days since the ball and I haven't seen Lucien. I should be relieved because that meant solitude and well, being able to move freely, to some extent. But I wasn't.How could I be relieved? He acted like we were a normal couple at the ball but the minute we got home, his
Lucien povShe has a way of getting me pissed and protective at the same time. But tonight as she looked up at me, her body swaying close to mine, her eyes almost dreamy, I couldn't help but feel like taking her right here, in front of everyone.I leaned closer, wrapping my hands around her waist
Adriana As a child, I've always loved playing dress up. Dad would buy lots of beautiful dresses and have the maids dress me in all of them while I waltz around the house, showcasing how beautiful I looked in them and basking in the compliments I was being given.I imagined I would also end up dres
Lucien pov “What do you mean she's not around?” I asked frowning at her.She gulped slightly already sensing that I was pissed.“I.. I went into her bedroom but she's not there. I couldn't see her anywhere.”“That's not possible,” I cursed and then walked past her outside the study.Great. Just g
