At first, there was nothing. Just quiet.

It was not the kind of quiet Max knew from the streets or from the long pauses before a trigger pulled.

This was heavier. It felt like the world had gone still, like he was trapped under water.

Then he heard it. A heartbeat. Not his own.

It was quick, light. Familiar. He followed it.

And then came her voice.

“Max.”

It was not loud, not even a whisper. But it reached him. It gave shape to the dark.

Images flickered in front of him. Suzi on a couch with a blanket, drawing in her notebook. Suzi in the lavender dress, the one that had stopped him cold. Suzi’s small hands clinging to his when she was afraid.

The pictures broke apart. Something else cut in.

Smoke. Leather. A man’s voice, sharp against her ear. “Quiet.”

Rage tore through him. He tried to move, but his body would not answer. He had no body here. Only the fight in his chest.

Suzi.

Her fear pulsed against him, pulling him closer. He pushed into it, forced himself toward her, though every

The lock scraped and Suzi tensed. Her back straightened, fingers tightening against the edge of the thin mattress. The door swung open with a slow, deliberate sound as Ricci stepped inside.“Well,” Ricci said, rocking back on his heels, smug as ever. “By now they’ve seen my little gift. I imagine Max is foaming at the mouth, Antonio trying to calm him down, Landon pretending he has control.” He chuckled, pleased with himself. “I sent them a rose bouquet. A nice touch, don’t you think?”Suzi stayed seated on the edge of the bed. She didn’t flinch, didn’t look away. Ricci didn’t know Max was in a coma. Her throat was tight, but she lifted her chin like Max always told her to when she wanted to hide fear. “Flowers?” she said flatly. “Really?”Ricci’s grin twitched. “You don’t like the idea? I included a nice note too.”“I think it’s cheesy,” Suzi said, her voice steady though her pulse raced. “Cliché. Almost lazy. You kidnap me, lock me in this hole, and the best threat you can come up w

The first thing he felt was anger. Not confusion, not weakness, not even relief at being awake again. Anger. It crawled under his skin, lit his chest, burned behind his ribs until it was all he could breathe. His body felt heavy, his arms like lead, but it didn’t matter. He forced his eyes open, dragged air into his lungs, and growled, “Where is she?”No one answered right away. The room came into focus in slow pieces. The curtains were drawn. The faint beep of machines filled the silence. His mother sat beside the bed, her face pale, eyes swollen from tears. Landon stood stiff near the wall, his jaw locked. Antonio was there too, hands behind his back, his face unreadable.Max pushed against the mattress, his muscles trembling with the effort. He ignored it. His throat was raw, the words scraping out like broken glass. “Where the hell is Suzi?”Valerie’s lips parted, but nothing came out.Max’s fury only grew. “Don’t look at me like that. Tell me!”Landon stepped forward, shoulders t

Suzi wanted him to keep talking. She wanted to buy time until Landon had time to plan something. But that wasn’t the only reason why. She wanted to get to know Ricci. Maybe it was unfair what happened to his family. Maybe the Costello family did owe him something.“It…it still doesn’t make any sense why you are so angry at Antonio,” she said.Ricci sighed. “Then let me explain. Julian was supporting Samuel. You see, my grandfather had always been bad with money, but since he was younger, Julian had taken care of him financially. The only reason Samuel even kept a roof over his and his wife’s heads was because Julian slipped him money.”Suzi said nothing.Ricci’s voice grew harsher, brittle at the edges. “But then Julian got killed by Antonio. Shot in some alley like a dog. And just like that, the money stopped. Samuel drank what little was left and gambled away the rest.”“And your grandmother?” Suzi wondered.Ricci’s mouth twisted. “My grandmother tried to keep things together. She s

The room had thin walls, thin curtains, and the air smelled like bleach that could not hide old smoke.Suzi sat on the edge of a narrow bed and kept her hands folded so she would not shake. The blanket at her back was scratchy. She did not use it. She did not want anything from this place on her skin. She listened. Pipes clicked in the wall. A car passed somewhere far off.Where the hell was she?Her mind replayed the last clear moment at the villa. She was taken from her home. A hand had clamped over her mouth before she could scream. The smell of leather and smoke filled her nose. The voice in her ear had been low, sharp.“Quiet.”Then she talked to her kidnapper, Ricci, who sounded way too arrogant for his age. She still wondered how old he was. Or how young. She pictured the villa the way it had been that last morning. Curtains drawn against the glare. Ella asleep in the chair. The baby’s room down the hall. She had not even finished decorating it yet.Her throat went tight. She w

It wasn’t a dream. It was real. He was still in there.Suzi had whispered it to herself a hundred times. The doctor had said it was “increased responsiveness,” clinical words that meant nothing to her heart but made Antonio stand straighter, made Valerie cry silently into her sleeve, made Landon’s jaw grind like he’d just been handed a reason to fight harder. To Suzi, it was simply proof that Max wasn’t leaving her.The room was dimmer now, curtains pulled against the mid-morning glare. Ella had fallen asleep curled in the corner chair, a blanket slipping off her shoulders. Valerie had tried to coax Suzi into resting in one of the guest rooms, but she refused. She couldn’t.Her hand brushed over Max’s knuckles again, her voice low. “You moved once, Max. I need you to do it again. Just once more. So I know it wasn’t the last trick you had in you.”Her eyes burned, but she held them open. If she blinked too long, she feared she might miss him.The door creaked, and Valerie stepped insid
