Chapter 4

작가: Clara
When Victoria returned to the Santini estate, she was practically vibrating with excitement.

"Mom! Dad! I did it!" Ignoring the wine stains all over her dress, she flung herself into Camilla's arms with a shriek. "The Don agreed to marry me! He said he wants the wedding within a month!"

Antonio flushed with excitement and slapped his knee again and again. "Yes! This is it! Victoria, you did it! The Santini family is finally joining Europe's most powerful ranks!"

"I always knew my daughter was born to be a Don's wife!" Camilla crowed, beside herself with glee.

Victoria grew even more smug, boasting about Caine's "special treatment" of her.

"You have no idea how special he was with me." Victoria gave a coy little laugh. "He even deliberately spilled wine on his shoes and had me wipe them clean. He said it was a test of my loyalty, that I was born to belong to him! Even his insults were so manly!"

I stood in the shadow of the staircase, listening to her breathtakingly stupid boasting, barely able to keep from scoffing out loud. She had actually mistaken Caine treating her like a dog for the Don's idea of flirtation. She was beyond saving.

But from that day on, Victoria's torment of me escalated without end. She was no longer satisfied with verbal abuse. She had begun to revel in "rehearsing" her power as the Don's wife.

"Elena, get over here!"

Victoria sat in the middle of the living room sofa like a queen on her throne, ordering me around. She intended to take out every bit of "discomfort" she'd experienced with Caine on me.

"Your future Donna wants red nail polish today. Get on your knees and paint my nails. If you go outside the lines by even a fraction, I'll have your filthy hands chopped off!"

I walked over without expression, sank to my knees on the cold marble floor, unscrewed the cap of the nail polish, and bent my head, painting her nails stroke by careful stroke.

Crack!

Without warning, Victoria slapped me across the face.

"You're hurting me! You clumsy piece of trash!" she shrieked, her eyes glittering with sadistic pleasure. Then she snatched up a cup of scalding tea and splashed its contents over my shoulder.

The scalding tea soaked through my clothes, and searing pain ripped through my skin.

"You're jealous of me, aren't you?" Victoria grabbed a fistful of my hair and glared at me with pure malice. "Jealous that I took your keepsake and stole your man? Face it, Elena! Your mother was a loser, and you're nothing but worthless trash!"

The slap had snapped my head sideways. My cheek was swollen, my shoulder burning. But I didn't fight back. I didn't talk back. I simply turned my head, picked up the nail polish brush, and went on painting her toenails.

I endured it. For the sake of my final revenge, I could endure anything.

But I wasn't a corpse with no feelings. I was human too. I hurt too.

Late that night, when the entire estate had fallen asleep, I hid alone in the cramped, damp bathroom attached to the servant's quarters. I turned on the shower and let the cold water pour down over me. I bit down hard on my lip and scrubbed at the red welts and bruises on my arms and shoulders, and finally, the tears I could no longer hold back fell in silence.

I looked at my battered reflection in the mirror and asked myself, over and over: Why am I enduring this? Why do I let them destroy me like this? Why, ever since Isabella died, has there been no one left to love me? My own father would sacrifice me for power. My stepmother and stepsister took pleasure in my suffering.

The crushing weight of hurt and loneliness threatened to swallow me whole.

And then I thought of that phone call. I thought of Caine's hoarse whisper: "It's you."

I thought of his low voice, the absolute certainty when he said he understood. And I thought of what he had done that very day, humiliating Victoria without mercy, making her grovel like a dog, all to avenge me.

He remembered me. Caine, a ruthless Don with no blood ties to me, was willing to go through fire for my sake, willing to grind my enemies beneath his heel in the shadows. And my own blood, my own family, treated me like dirt, like something to be skinned alive and thrown away.

I didn't know what I felt for Caine. Was it gratitude born of desperation? Dependence on someone stronger? Or something deeper, something I wasn't ready to admit, a sense that this was fate? But I knew that in this cold, cruel world, he was the only one on my side.

I took a deep breath, turned off the shower, and roughly wiped the tears from my face. I found an old long-sleeved shirt and pulled it on, covering every ugly mark on my skin.

I was done feeling sorry for myself. Dead people didn't deserve my tears.

Two weeks until the wedding.

I just had to hold on for two more weeks. And then I would send Victoria and Antonio to hell myself.

  • The Mafia Don Called Off His Wedding After Rebirth   Chapter 10

Six months later. The Aquila Estate on the Mediterranean coast hosted the real wedding of the century. No schemes, no betrayals. Only pure grandeur and splendor. Every power broker in Europe stood along the red carpet, trembling with deference, paying their highest respects to their new Donna.I wore the gown that had always been meant for me, hand-sewn with tens of thousands of tiny diamonds, and walked with Caine to the pinnacle of power, one step at a time.As for the fate of the Santini family, it was spoken of now and then as the most chilling cautionary tale on the island of Sicily. They said that in the darkest mine shafts, two women with ruined legs clawed at each other every day over half a piece of moldy bread. And in some unmarked mass grave, what remained of Antonio had long since been picked clean by the birds. But none of that had anything to do with me anymore. The evening sea breeze swept across the estate's terrace. I leaned back against Caine's broad chest, gazing out

I was so shaken I couldn't speak. All I could do was let the tears pour freely as I held him with everything I had.The tragedy of our last life hadn't been mine alone. Two people had been destroyed by fate's cruel timing, missing each other by the narrowest of margins. And this second chance, this reunion, was something he had begged from God with his very soul."Elena," Caine said softly, releasing me and lowering himself to one knee before the holy cross. He reached into his suit pocket and drew out the sapphire cufflink, heavy with ten years of memories, and a flawlessly cut black diamond ring representing the highest authority of the Corleone family. He held both out to me.His gaze was intense and unwavering, possessive in a way that threatened to consume me whole."This time, I won't make you wait for me. And I won't give you the chance to push me away. You're not just the person who saved my life. You are my faith, in this life and in every life to come."He took my hand and pr

The air pulsed with a sense of destiny that made my heart race.Caine stared at me for a long moment, and then he said something that made the blood freeze in my veins."In our last life, I recognized you too. Didn't I?"I jerked my head up and stared at him in shock.Caine's eyes were slowly reddening. Those hands that held the power of life and death were clenched into fists at his sides, veins standing out on his knuckles. His voice was raw with a regret so deep it seemed to tear his very soul apart as he revealed a secret buried in the depths of time."In our last life, the moment Victoria brought that cufflink to me, I knew it was fake. That fool had no idea that when you saved me in that cellar, a length of wire sliced open your palm. That cufflink had your blood on it."Caine shut his eyes in anguish. "I planned to play along, keep the Santini family unsuspecting while I secretly got you out. But a rebellion broke out inside the Corleone family, and I was trapped for three full

"Take them away."Caine couldn't even bring himself to look at them a second longer. He addressed his guards with the finality of a death sentence."Antonio is guilty of betrayal and murder. Carry out the family's harshest punishment: death by flaying and hanging. As for Camilla and Victoria... send them to the lowest mine shafts in Sicily and cut their Achilles tendons. I want them to spend every minute of every day for the rest of their miserable lives on their knees in the mud, atoning for what they've done.""No! Please, Don, have mercy!""Elena! I'm your sister! Save me..."Amid blood-curdling screams, Camilla, Victoria, and Antonio were dragged from the cathedral like carcasses by the Corleone guards. In the span of a single hour, the once-mighty Santini family was reduced to nothing. The guests, sensing the matter was settled, filed out quickly and quietly. Before long, only Caine and I remained in the vast St. Mary's Cathedral. The last light of sunset poured through the staine

"No... that's impossible!" The last thread holding Victoria together snapped. She stared, wide-eyed, her face a mask of terror and despair. "How could you know? How could you possibly tell the difference...""Because I have spent ten years holding every trace of her presence, every tear she shed, even the sound of her breathing at her most desperate, inside my soul." Caine straightened up, and something savage and bone-deep flashed through his eyes. "And you, who aren't fit to stand in her shadow, think you can impersonate her?"The cathedral fell into deathly silence. Every guest held their breath, too afraid to make a sound. Then the cathedral's heavy doors were slowly pushed open.I walked in wearing a simple, sharp black trench coat and heels, one step at a time, unhurried, as if I had all the time in the world. Sunlight poured over me, casting me as a queen of vengeance returned from the depths. The moment Victoria saw me, she lost her mind. She lunged at me, jabbing her finger in

  • The Mafia Don Called Off His Wedding After Rebirth   Chapter 5

Only one day remained until the "wedding of the century" that all of Europe was watching. The Santini estate had descended into complete revelry. Camilla and Victoria acted as though they had already been crowned at the summit of the Mafia world. Meanwhile, I was still in that dark servant's room, calm and composed, sending the last encrypted email from my old phone.Inside it were the core account books Isabella had left behind, along with every shred of evidence proving Antonio had betrayed the Moretti family and stolen their weapons pipeline years ago. I handed it all to Caine, enough ammunition to destroy the Santini family a thousand times over.If I was going to have my revenge, I wanted them to fall from the heights at the very moment they felt most triumphant, most admired, plummeting from heaven into the deepest pit of hell.On the day of the wedding, luxury cars lined up outside St. Mary's Cathedral. Mafia bosses from across Europe mingled with politicians and tycoons. Dozens
