Chapter 2

Author: Grogan
Staring at my blank, calm expression, Stella seemed to grow even angrier.

"So you've decided to keep playing this game? What scene are we on now? The heartbroken fiancé pretending everything is fine as he packs his bags?"

I smiled, looking directly into her eyes, my voice steady.

"If that's what you want to believe, then sure, call it an act."

Either way, in three days, I’d be on a plane back home.

Stella froze. She bit her lip, then turned and slammed the front door shut with all her strength. "Whatever! If you're going to put on a show, you better commit to it!"

She didn't come home that night. However, I saw a new post on Ethan's Instagram. Shown on his nightstand was Stella's luxury watch.

The laughable part? I was the one who had bought her that anniversary gift.

I turned off my phone. The next morning, I walked into our office.

I had built this company with my own two hands, using zero connections from my family or my real surname. It was completely clean, and every single painting sold had my effort and sweat poured into it. If I was leaving, I was taking my hard work with me.

Just as I was backing up the accounts and client list to a portable hard drive, my sales manager, Sam, pushed the door open and hurried in.

His face was pale, his steps unsteady, and his voice trembled. "Mr. King, we're in huge trouble."

I looked up at him in confusion.

"That idiot Ethan posted a bunch of photos on Instagram yesterday, saying he was pulling an all-nighter with Ms. Ross. And right there in the background, he leaked the draft for her top-confidential project!"

My hands froze.

Sam’s voice cracked, sounding as if he were on the verge of tears.

"Now Ms. Ross' draft is going viral online! That's our biggest project of the year, and it was under a strict NDA! The client is furious. They just sent a legal notice demanding triple damages! A whole year of our company’s revenue won't even cover it!"

I snatched the legal letter from his hands and stormed toward Stella's office.

The moment I walked in, I saw Ethan resting his head on Stella's lap. The two of them were lounging on the custom sofa from Enotria I had bought, a piece I had specially sourced through my contacts so Stella could rest during all-nighters.

It was the only one of its kind in the world.

Seeing me enter, Ethan sat up abruptly. "Oh, Alan, don't get the wrong idea! I stayed late yesterday to help Stella with work. I was just exhausted, so I borrowed her couch to rest for a bit."

I didn't give him a second glance. Instead, I threw the legal notice right in front of Stella.

"Your confidential draft is trending all over the internet. The client is suing us for five million dollars."

I stared at her shocked expression. "Who's paying for this?"

Stella grabbed the letter. As she read it, her disbelief turned into a dark, grim scowl, and she turned her gaze toward Ethan.

Ethan immediately burst into tears, putting on a performance more dramatic than a professional actor's.

"I'm sorry, it's all my fault! I just posted a few photos on Instagram. I had no idea it would cause this much trouble! I really didn't mean to!"

He sobbed, grabbing Stella’s hand and shaking it as he pleaded, "Stella, you have to believe me! Look, I'll go to the client's office! I'll tell them it was all my fault and beg them to drop the lawsuit! I'll beg them to give us one more chance!"

Seeing Stella staring at him darkly without moving or saying a word, Ethan cried even harder, his body twitching with exaggerated sobs.

"Really, I can do it! Just let me try..."

Then his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed onto the floor, convulsing.

"Ethan! What's wrong?!"

Stella panicked and pulled him into her arms, looking up at me in desperation. "Alan, quick, help me call an ambulance!"

Watching Ethan's little performance, I couldn't help but let out a cold laugh.

"I can call, but we need to figure out who's taking responsibility for this payout first. Is Ethan paying, or are you?"

Stella froze, her eyes widening in disappointment.

"Alan, are you seriously drawing the line with me at a time like this?"

"No! It can't be!"Tears burst from Stella's eyes like a broken dam as she shrieked hysterically. "He can't just abandon me like this! Tell me where the wedding is! I'm going to find him!" She grabbed Joe, refusing to let go no matter what."Have you got a death wish?! Get off me!"Joe frowned impatiently, raising his fist to strike, only to freeze halfway in mid-air."Mr. Alan gave explicit orders not to hit women."His icy gaze shifted toward Ethan, looking at him as if he were already a dead man."Since you can't keep your woman in check, you can take her punishment for her."Several men stepped forward immediately, pinning Ethan to the floor and beating him to a pulp.Covered in blood, Ethan howled in agony. "Help! Stop! Don't hit me! Please spare me! Tell Alan that Stella and I have nothing to do with each other! She was the one who seduced me! This whole thing is her fault!"Please! I was wrong! I didn't know Alan was the heir to the mafia! Please let me go just this o

"Ethan... what are you talking about?" Stella went completely cold, her voice trembling violently.Ethan didn't even dare look at her, desperately begging for mercy."Please spare me!" As he whimpered, the fabric of his trousers suddenly darkened. A foul, pungent liquid streamed down his pants, soaking the floor.Joe, the capo, wrinkled his nose in disgust."What do you take us for? Common thieves?! We are members of the El Tricolor mafia, not street thugs! We don't do dirty, low-class shakedowns!"He pulled out an equity transfer agreement stamped with official legal seals and slapped it onto the desk."Our acquisition is entirely by the book. Mr. Alan King has legally assigned all the equity under his name over to our organization."Joe looked up at her coldly."From a legal standpoint, our organization is the single largest shareholder of this company and holds full authority to take over operations."Stella's brain went completely numb."Impossible! Has Alan gone insane?!

Ethan’s face went ghostly pale. He carefully gathered the bills from the floor, his tone timid."Stella, please don't lose your temper. Let's just focus on finding a way to pay off this debt first.""You're asking me?!" Stella screeched, her voice sharp enough to make his ears ring."You're the one in charge of sales now! Why is it that the moment Alan leaves, you can't sell a single painting?!"Ethan hung his head dejectedly. "Art isn't a basic necessity like food or shelter. Its entire value depends on the painter's reputation and industry connections. The second Alan walked out, the entire marketing system collapsed. There's nothing I can do!"A flash of malice flickered deep in his eyes."This is all his fault! He's narrow-minded and jealous of me, and he'd love nothing more than to see this company go straight under! Those clients and sponsors probably pulled out just to target me because of you. He just wants to destroy your reputation and watch you crumble!""Crumble..."

The plane landed smoothly on the runway of the King family’s private airfield.I stepped out of the cabin. Outside the hangar, a fleet of sleek black luxury cars was lined up in precise formation—the absolute highest level of welcome my family could offer.A man in a dark, tailored suit stepped forward and walked slowly toward me.He was the terrifying don who controlled the entire underworld of El Tricolor: my father."My son, welcome home."He patted my shoulder, a look of long-lost pride gleaming deep in his eyes. "From now on, the mafia and the King family are entirely in your hands."I nodded. The very next day, I met the woman my father had arranged for me to marry: Olivia Garcia, the only daughter of the North Usonia mafia's don.We scheduled our first meeting at a quiet cafe. The moment I walked in, I spotted Olivia sitting by the window. The afternoon sunlight outlined her delicate features, and resting in her lap was an out-of-print art book. The minimalist signature

Stella's face drained of color, her usual arrogance vanishing in a heartbeat. Standing beside her, Sam was sweating profusely, looking timidly back and forth between the two of them."Ms. Ross, if all these orders get canceled and the sponsors pull their funding, our cash flow is going to dry up in less than a month! The company will go under!"The office fell into a dead silence.Stella's mind went blank, and she turned to Ethan in utter helplessness. "Ethan, what do we do?"Ethan, however, was as pale as a sheet, cold sweat beading on his forehead. He was even more panicked than she was, keeping his mouth tightly shut.Seeing that neither of them had an answer, Sam spoke up."Ms. Ross, I don't think it's a coincidence that the clients and sponsors are all pulling out at the same time. There has to be a reason behind it. Mr. King built and maintained every single one of those relationships. Maybe he can fix this."Why don't we contact Mr. King? Ask him to come back and figure s

I leaned back into my first-class seat. The moment the plane glided down the runway and lifted into the sky, an overwhelming sense of relief washed over me.Meanwhile, back at the office, an unexplainable restlessness settled over Stella. She stood by the window, watching contrails streak across the clear sky.She glanced down at her watch, her brow furrowing. As of right now, I hadn't even shown up to work.Ethan pushed the door open and stepped inside, wrapping his arms around her with tenderness."Congratulations, Stella. From now on, you'll never have to be held back by him again, let alone walk on eggshells around him!"He made a solemn promise. "Now that Alan has resigned, I will stay by your side and replace him in running the company. I'll make you a household name—a true top-tier artist!"Stella's face hardened as she shot back, "No way. Alan won't actually resign! He's just putting on a show! He's using leaving and quitting to threaten me, trying to make me soft and fo
