Chapter 8

Penulis: Harper
The gunfire didn't stop. Bullets kept rattling against the sheet-metal roof. Outside, someone was shouting, and someone was starting a car. A few seconds later, glass shattered again. Sofia's people were clearly falling apart.

"Didn't you say nobody was watching this place?" She grabbed the man who had burst in.

"How should I know!" He shook her off. "A bunch of guys came in through the east gate. At least a dozen of them, all with rifles!"

Another man stuck his head in from outside. "We have to go!"

"What about the test?" Sofia asked.

She made me so angry I almost laughed. At a time like this, she was still asking about her test.

"Right now, the only thing you should be thinking about is getting out alive."

She turned to look at me, like my words had stung.

"Shut up."

Another explosion went off outside. The overhead light swung twice. The man guarding me glanced toward the door without thinking.

I dropped my head and felt behind the chair for the metal strip. While I was struggling earlier, I'd noticed that a thin piece of metal holding the wooden chair together had come loose and was sticking out. I started sawing the zip tie against it.

It was slow. The plastic dug into my skin, and my wrists were covered in blood. Sofia's people were still arguing.

"You're gonna have to pay us more."

"Let's get out first and argue later."

"Moretti and Rossi men are gonna be here any minute!"

Sofia suddenly shouted, "We can't leave!"

Everyone looked at her.

"The messages already went out," she said through gritted teeth. "If we leave now, they'll know it's fake the second they get here."

"It is fake!"

"That's not the same thing."

She was pale, but she still wouldn't back down.

"Take her to the south warehouse. I'll go to the north one. As long as we're split up, you can pull out as soon as people show up on both sides."

My hands stopped for a second. She was actually going through with it.

"Sofia."

She ignored me. The man who had burst in was cursing under his breath, clearly done taking orders from her. Just then, a side window in the warehouse shattered.

One of the men dropped where he stood. Everyone hit the floor. I went down too, chair and all.

The metal strip tore a deep notch in the zip tie. I kept pulling. Once.

Twice. It finally snapped. I didn't move right away.

First, I kept my hands hidden behind me. The people outside were already close. One of Sofia's gunmen got up, but the moment he raised his gun, gunfire from outside drove him back down. Another radio fell at my feet.

When no one was looking, I reached out and pulled it toward me. The channel was all static. Then I heard a familiar voice. "We're in through the central passage. Confirm the location of both hostages."

It was Matteo. My breath caught. They were here.

"South..."

The moment I pressed the talk button, the channel exploded with harsh interference.

"South warehouse..."

Only two words got out. One of the men saw that my hands were free, rushed over, and kicked the radio away.

"She got loose!"

I lunged for it, but someone grabbed me by the hair from behind.

"Let go of me!"

I drove my elbow into his ribs. Pain tore through my old wound. He let go with a grunt, and I snatched an empty magazine off the floor and hurled it at him.

In the chaos, Sofia suddenly screamed. A piece of debris from the window had sliced across her calf, and blood was already seeping from the wound. She stared at it, and for once, a little real fear showed on her face.

But it only lasted a few seconds.

She looked up and shouted at the man beside her, "Take me to the north warehouse!"

"You're still going?" I was stunned. She was acting like a complete lunatic.

"I'm going!" She turned to look at me. "Take her to the south warehouse."

Two men hauled me up by the arms. The moment we got outside, I finally saw what was going on. The old docks were in total chaos.

Cars were burning to the east, and muzzle flashes kept flaring between the shipping containers. The men Sofia had hired were a ragtag bunch in mismatched clothes. The other group was clearly more organized, using the container yard as cover to close in bit by bit. I didn't know who they were. But they knew the Rossi and Moretti men were coming.

That alone made them dangerous. I was shoved into another car. Sofia was dragged off in the opposite direction.

Right before they took her away, she was still glaring at me.

"You'll find out soon enough."

I didn't answer. Ten minutes later, I was thrown into the south warehouse. It was even closer to the fuel depot than the first one.

Only two men were guarding the door, and one of them obviously wanted to run. They tied my hands again, but I had slipped a snapped-off bit of the metal strip into my sleeve. The gunfire outside kept getting closer.

As I worked at the zip tie, the radio on the floor crackled to life again.

"North warehouse reporting. Hostage is injured."

"South warehouse, signs of life confirmed."

"East passage is blocked. A heavy vehicle is moving toward the fuel depot."

My head jerked up. The fuel depot. This place was more dangerous than the north warehouse.

Someone on the radio asked, "We can't push on both at once. Which one do we hit first?"

After a brief crackle of static, Matteo's voice came through. "Confirm where they both are."

Someone rattled off coordinates. My hands finally came free. I didn't go for a gun right away. First, I grabbed the radio.

"Matteo."

The channel was nothing but static.

"Sofia... she set this up..."

The rest was swallowed by interference. The guard at the door heard me, turned, and charged. I kicked the radio under a shelf and grabbed an iron bar to fend him off.

At the same moment, gunfire broke out beyond the door. The instant he looked back, I brought the bar down on his wrist.

His gun hit the floor.

Matteo was discharged three weeks later. He didn't send anyone to pick me up.He just texted me to ask if I'd be willing to meet him at the church. The same church where we had twice failed to get married.I said yes. That afternoon, there were no guests in the church.Light from the stained glass fell across every pew.Matteo sat alone in the front row.His wound still hadn't fully healed, and he moved slowly when he stood up.I walked over.He set a ring box and a set of keys on the pew.The ring was the one found at the docks. It had been through the fire, and there was still a tiny black mark on the edge."I had it fixed," he said."I didn't replace it with a new one."I picked it up and looked at it for a while. When he was 19, he had held out this ring and asked me to marry him. After that, we waited far too many years."Elena.""Yeah.""I always thought I owed you a wedding."He looked around the empty church."It took me until now to see it. The wedding wasn't what I needed to

The ambulance sped the whole way.I knelt beside Matteo, pressing gauze to the wound. The blood kept seeping through.Luca sat on the other side. His arm was scraped up too.The surgery lasted more than three hours.I waited until the doctor came out and said the bullet hadn't hit anything vital. My mother's legs nearly gave out.My father held her up.Matteo woke up the next afternoon.Luca and I went in together.I was the first person he saw."Are you hurt?""No."He was visibly relieved. Then he noticed Luca. The old Matteo would probably have ordered him out right away. This time, he was only quiet for a moment."Thank you."Luca nodded."It was the right thing to do."I was a little surprised.Matteo looked back at me."You were here the whole time?""I waited until your surgery was over."For a second, his face lit up."So does that mean—""No."I knew what he was going to ask."I just came to make sure you were okay.""Because I took a bullet for you?""Because you took a bulle

Within moments, gunfire was everywhere on the estate. My father's men held the main house.Luca's people locked down the side corridor and the back courtyard.I fell back toward the wine cellar with my mother and Walter. No one tried to take my gun away. And no one told me to hide in the back anymore, either.Luca pressed a spare magazine into my hand."They've got people at the back door. Go through the wine cellar.""Where's my mom?""Right up ahead."My mother looked back at me.I grabbed her hand."Come on."For the first time, she didn't ask a single question. She just followed me down. The west courtyard fell fast.We were halfway down the underground passage when two gunmen burst in through the cellar's side door.Luca fired first.I pulled my mother back behind some wooden crates and raised my gun to pin down the second man."Get her out of here!"The guards got my mother and Walter out first.Luca and I were the last to pull out.Outside the garage, there was smoke everywhere.

Two days later, my father called me."Come home one last time."I didn't say anything. He added quickly, "I'm not asking you to move back."The lawyer will be there."I want to give back everything I owe you."I frowned."Like what?""The property in your name, your accounts, the jewelry your mother set aside for you, and the investments our family has managed for you all these years."My father paused."All of it will be separated from the family's finances and put under your control."No conditions."Luca and I returned to the estate together. My mother was waiting at the front entrance. She simply handed me a long box. Inside was the diamond necklace from my 18th birthday."Sofia left it behind," my mother said quietly. "It was always yours."I picked it up and looked at it for a few seconds. "Thank you."Her eyes welled up at once.In the dining room, my place at my father's right was empty. When I walked in, everyone turned to look at me.Walter Hayes, my parents' lawyer, began go

The door opened just as Matteo reached it.I raised the gun.I held it steady and aimed it straight at his chest.Everyone in the hallway froze."Tell them to back off.""Elena.""Back off."He stared at me for a few seconds, then raised a hand.Everyone stepped back."Where's Luca?""Next door.""Open it.""Put the gun down first.""Matteo."I looked at him."Are you telling yourself again that it's all fine, as long as I don't get hurt in the end?"Little by little, the color drained from his face.Matteo's eyes slowly filled with tears."I'm just scared of losing you again.""So you still don't get it.""I already lost you once, for three years." His voice was hoarse. "I can't—"I cut him off. "Let Luca out."It was a long time before Matteo finally turned his head."Open the door."When they brought Luca out, he had a small scrape on his lip.He saw the gun in my hand, and the first thing he said was, "You okay?""I'm fine."I looked at Matteo."Give him back his things."One by on

It was Matteo himself. And the news he'd brought was true.Sofia had been in touch with two of her old hired guns, and they already had photos of this block.Luca's people were moving the cars and equipment.I opened the door and let Matteo in."We're moving tonight," I told him."Where to?""Luca's handling it."His gaze shifted to Luca. Then it settled on Luca's mouth, which was still a little red.Matteo's face darkened in an instant."What's going on between you two?"I didn't dodge the question."We're together."He looked like he hadn't understood."What?""Luca and I are together."The living room went deathly quiet."Since when?""Just now."Matteo stared at me."Because he saved your life?"That stopped me for a second.A moment later, I laughed instead."You just told me that saving someone's life doesn't mean you owe them anything."His expression froze."Then why him?""Because I like him.""Elena."His voice was tight. "You've only been back a few days.""I was away from N
