Liora’s POV

Alora ran back toward the grass as if the question about the tattoo had never happened, her yellow dress bright against the green. I watched her for a second, still feeling the ghost of her small finger near my ear. Nikolai’s hand remained around mine, his thumb moving once across my knuckles before he finally let go so we could follow her.

The rest of the outing stayed light on the surface. He chased her in slow, exaggerated steps that made her scream with laughter.

I pushed her o

Liora’s POVThe compromise lasted until the afternoon, which was longer than I expected.Alora had been unusually attached to me all day, following me from the sitting room to the garden and back again with her stuffed wolf under one arm. Nikolai stayed close, but he was trying. I could see the effort in the way he let me walk, let me sit on the floor with her, let me be a mother instead of a patient. He still watched every movement. He just did it with his mouth closed. It was Alora who broke the careful quiet. She lifted her arms toward me while I was standing near the sofa, the same way she always did when she wanted to be picked up. “Up, Mommy.”I started to bend.“I’ll take her,” Nikolai said, already moving.Alora frowned, arms still in the air. “No. Mommy.”I hesitated, caught between her and the look on his face. He had agreed I would not lift her for now. I had agreed too. In the moment, with her expecting my arms, the rule felt suddenly visible.“Daddy can carry you, baby,”

  • The Mafia King's Collateral    Can you?

Nikolai’s POVI knew the compromise was going to break the moment I walked into the sitting room and found her on her feet. Not just on her feet - moving. Alora was on the rug with a pile of picture books, and Liora was bent over the low table, gathering scattered crayons into a box. She had changed out of my shirt into a soft dress. Her hair was tied back. To anyone else, she would have looked perfectly fine.I saw the way she paused halfway through and put a hand on the table.“Liora.”She did not look guilty. That was the first sign. “Good morning.”“You were supposed to stay in bed.”“I stayed in bed yesterday.” She dropped the last crayon into the box and straightened. “Today I want to be in the same room as my daughter without looking like I’m recovering from surgery.”Alora glanced up. “Mommy’s helping.”“Mommy can sit and help,” I said, keeping my voice even for her sake. Then I looked at Liora. “Sit down.”She sat. For about four minutes. The next time I turned, she was in th

  • The Mafia King's Collateral    For tonight

Nikolai’s POVThe tenderness of the afternoon did not leave the room so much as change shape.Once Liora had stopped crying and the word pregnant had settled into something I could say without feeling like the floor had moved, a different instinct took over. It was quieter than fear and much less civilized than joy.I wanted the house rearranged around her. I wanted every sharp edge gone. I wanted her off her feet, fed, warm, and within reach. She noticed before I had even finished thinking it.“You’re doing the face,” she said from the bed.“What face?”“The one you do before you start issuing orders.”I stood, already deciding the first of them. “You need to eat something small. Then you rest. No walking around the house looking for things you can do. If you want something, you ask.”She stared at me. “I can walk to the bathroom, Nikolai.”“I didn’t say you couldn’t.” I poured water and set it on the nightstand. “I said you are not going to turn this into a normal day and hope your

  • The Mafia King's Collateral    Still in awe

Nikolai’s POVThe doctor’s footsteps faded down the hall, and the bedroom returned to a kind of silence that did not feel empty so much as full. Liora was still sitting against the pillows, one hand resting loosely over her stomach as if she had not realized she put it there. Her eyes were red. Her mouth kept trying to form a smile and then losing it.I stayed on the edge of the bed, watching her, because if I moved too fast I was afraid I would say all of it wrong.“You’re looking at me like you’re waiting for me to fall apart,” she said quietly.“I’m looking at you because I don’t want to miss this.” I reached out and took the hand that was not on her stomach. “How do you feel?”She let out a small, shaky breath. “Sick. Scared. Happy. Guilty for being scared. I don’t know which one is winning.”“You don’t have to pick one.” I lifted her hand and kissed her knuckles. “You can have all of them.”Her eyes filled again. “I keep thinking about Alora. About whether I can do this. About w

  • The Mafia King's Collateral    Pregnant?

Nikolai’s POVShe woke slowly, the way she had been waking since the island - except this time there was no softness in it. Her lashes fluttered, then she grimaced and turned her face into the pillow.“Still bad?” I asked.“Better,” she said automatically.I gave her a look. “Try again.”A weak breath left her. “The dizziness is less. My stomach isn’t. And my head feels heavy.”“That’s what I thought.” I reached for the glass on the nightstand and helped her sit up enough to drink. “The doctor is coming.”Her eyes opened fully at that. “Nikolai.”“It’s already arranged.”“I don’t need a doctor for being tired.”“You went white at the table. You were nauseous. You could barely stand without holding the chair.” I kept my voice even. “That is not tired. That is something I am not going to sit here and guess about.”She looked like she wanted to argue, then closed her eyes again. “Alora will worry if she sees a doctor walking through the house.”“Maria has her in the garden. She won’t com

  • The Mafia King's Collateral    You're unwell

Nikolai’s POVThe morning had started the way I wanted most mornings to start now.Alora was at the table with a half-eaten piece of toast, talking with her mouth full about a bird she had seen in the garden. Liora sat across from me in one of my shirts, hair still loose from sleep, smiling at our daughter and stealing small sips of tea. I watched them over the rim of my cup and thought, not for the first time since we came home, that this was the part of my life I had no interest in handing back to anyone else. Then Liora set the cup down a little too carefully.I noticed the change before she said anything. The color left her face in a slow fade. Her smile stayed in place for Alora, but her fingers tightened around the handle of the cup as if she needed it to stay upright.“Liora.”She looked at me and shook her head once, small and quick. “I’m fine.”“You’re not.” I was already standing. “What is it?”“Just dizzy.” She tried to laugh it off. “I stood up too fast. Or I didn’t sleep

Liora's POV Sunlight pierced the heavy velvet curtains like it had no right to be there. I hadn’t slept. Not really. Every time I closed my eyes, I felt that icy gray gaze dragging over my body in the study. The silk robe still lay draped over the chair where I’d dropped it last night, a silen

Liora's POV The black SUV smelled like expensive leather and barely contained danger.I sat rigid in the back seat, Alora pressed so tightly against my side that I could feel her little heart racing. Liora's POV The cheap bottle of wine felt heavy in my hand as I pushed open the apartment door. I had scraped together the last of my money for it — a pathetic little celebration after Ogura’s death. One night to toast freedom. One night to believe the bruises on my arms would finally fade and I
