Chapter 6

ผู้เขียน: Peachy
Once news of the engagement got out, Marcello and I started putting on a high-profile show.

Racing bikes, taking out yachts, hitting up underground casinos and nightclubs.

Like two rebel kids, we showed off our union to the world in the loudest way possible.

I acted like I didn't care. I acted happy. I acted deeply in love.

But deep down, I knew it was all fake.

Chloe changed. She was no longer that gentle, elegant mafia princess. She became depressed and bitter, withering away day by day.

But on the day Marcello and I announced our wedding date, Chloe made a decision too.

"I'm getting married on the exact same day," she suddenly said at a family meeting. "I'm marrying Julian. Right on Aurora's wedding day."

It was a blatant provocation.

I didn't care. We were never real sisters anyway.

The wedding day arrived. They set up two venues at the estate. Mine was insanely lavish. Chloe's was much simpler.

In the dressing room, wearing a six-figure gown, I stared at myself in the mirror.

I looked like a princess, but inside, I was as hollow as a puppet.

Outside the door, my oldest brother was waiting to walk Chloe down the aisle.

He saw me, and his face tightened.

"Brother," I spoke first. "Aren't you going to walk me down the aisle?"

He was silent for a long time. Finally, he shook his head. "Aurora, I..."

"I get it." I cut him off. "I don't need you to."

I've walked alone my whole life. Today wasn't going to be any different.

But just as I was about to step out the estate doors, Mother suddenly appeared beside me.

"Aurora," her voice was soft. "Wait."

"Your brother... it's not that he doesn't want to walk you." Mother's voice choked up a bit. "The second he could get out of bed, he went and threw a punch at Marcello. He felt that letting his sister marry a guy like that dragged his pride through the mud."

My heart skipped a beat.

"He's not a machine. He can't change how he feels overnight. But he did do something for you."

Under my veil, my eyes started getting wet.

"You have such beautiful makeup on today. Don't cry," Mother said softly. "It'll ruin."

I took a deep breath, forcing the tears back.

"Thank you," I said quietly. Then I walked toward the waiting stretch limo without looking back.

The moment the car door shut, I couldn't hold back my tears anymore.

Not because I was moved, but because it was so damn sad.

They always did this. Giving me tiny bits of warmth at the very last second, just enough to stop me from hating them completely.

But that warmth was too little. Not nearly enough to erase all the pain.

"What are you crying for?" Marcello sat next to me and handed me a handkerchief.

"Family is twisted. They make it impossible for me to fully hate them, but they never give me enough to love them either." I wiped my tears.

The wedding went smoothly. The priest's blessing. The applause. And that kiss meant for eternity.

Everything was perfect. Except for the hearts of the bride and groom.

After the reception, we went back to his penthouse. Extravagant decor, expensive furniture, and a massive European king-size bed.

"You're not happy." Marcello poured himself a whiskey at the bar. "You've had a long face this whole time."

I turned to him. I decided to lay it all out.

"Marcello, I'm going to ask you a question. I want an honest answer."

"What question?"

"When you first decided to marry me, did you get a kick out of the revenge?"

His smirk vanished instantly. "Aurora, tonight is our wedding night. Don't bring up this buzzkill."

That evasive, conflicting attitude made my blood run cold.

I stared right into his eyes. "Answer me."

He stayed quiet for a long time. Finally, he turned his back, refusing to face me.

I got it. His silence was the best answer.

I ripped the gorgeous veil off my head and let it fall to the floor.

"Let me tell you something, Marcello." I said, dead calm. "Before this switched marriage, I was doing fine. I gladly accepted Chloe as my sister. I never wanted to hurt anyone. And I never wanted to steal anyone's fiancé."

His shoulders went stiff, but he still didn't look back.

"But you ruined my life." I went on. "And more importantly, I can't be married to a man who holds a grudge against my family."

I pulled the insanely expensive Vitiello wedding ring off my finger and slammed it on the table.

"Starting tonight, our marriage is nothing but a shell." I glared at him coldly. "I will never be a submissive Donna. And don't expect me to play the loving wife. Our war has just begun."

Marcello finally turned around. His face looked awful. A dark, provoked glint flashed in his eyes.

"Fine," he sneered. "Aurora, this is the karma you asked for. Don't regret it."

I closed my eyes.

There was one more thing I didn't say out loud.

I hated my family's fake sense of "fairness."

Real fairness would mean making up for the dozen years I lost first.

Like splitting mob turf. If I was supposed to get 99 blocks but only got one, they owe me 98. Don't tell me to split fifty-fifty with the thief.

I needed massive favoritism to let go of the past.

But they couldn't give it to me.

I opened my eyes and looked at a furious Marcello.

"Since it's karma, then let's torture each other," I said calmly. "Let's see who breaks first."

Julian looked sharp in his tailored suit, his coffee mug warm in his hand as always. "Senior Prosecutor in D.C." He placed his transfer papers on the table. "I start next month."I nodded, showing no surprise. He earned it. The man had ambition, skill, and principles. The legal side needed men like him. "Congratulations," I raised my mug. "Prosecutor Julian."He gave a bitter smile. "Aurora, you know what I want to say.""I know." I put the mug down. "But there's no need."Julian looked at me, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes. "If I hadn't backed down back then... if I hadn't agreed to the switch... what would have happened?"The question hung in the air for a long time. I looked out the window at the Detroit streets, the familiar rundown buildings, the slums where I once lived. "'If' is a word for losers." I smiled slightly, raising my mug to clink his. "The past is gone, the future isn't promised, we only have today.""And today, the streets of Detroit and Chicago belong

"Let them in." I slammed a grease-covered wrench onto the metal workbench. The screech of wheelchair tires scraping against the concrete floor echoed through the auto shop. The two heavily armed guards outside lowered their SMGs and stepped aside. The roller door slowly rolled up, letting the blinding sunlight flood into the dim garage. The wheelchair rolled over the greasy concrete, making a dull, struggling squeak. I looked up and saw Chloe pushing Marcello in his wheelchair at the entrance. The former mafia prince, who once kicked down estate doors with total arrogance, was now slumped in a custom wheelchair like a pile of rotting meat. Chloe looked terrifyingly gaunt, her eyes hollow. She didn't look anything like a mafia princess anymore. The haute couture she used to treasure was long gone, replaced by a cheap, threadbare coat. Her withered face was ashen, and her once-proud neck was completely bowed. "Aurora." Chloe’s voice shook. "We need to talk."I dropped the wren

Chloe's bridge-jumping stunt turned both families into the biggest joke of the underworld. As the fallout from her little show spread, the paper-thin illusion of their power was completely shredded. I didn't give them a second to breathe. I ordered a total lockdown on their dark web trading channels and secretly severed their last few weapon and vehicle smuggling lines. I even paid off key middlemen to tank their remaining legitimate logistics network. I sat in my office, listening to Rico's latest report. "Donna, per your orders, we cut off their three main weapon supply chains." Rico placed the file on my desk. "The Vitiello family's cash flow is down 70%.""Good." I flipped through the report. "How are the rival factions reacting?""The Irish, the Russians, and the cartels down South are all getting restless." Rico sounded slightly thrilled. "They smell blood in the water."I put the file down and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window. Night fell, and the neon lights of C

"Here's your care package." I slid a manila envelope across the table. "That's the Irish mob's operational plan for next month."Julian took the envelope and nodded. "Your intel is as sharp as always."This gray-area collaboration between us had been going on for over half a year. He needed leads to fight crime; I needed to wipe out my rivals. We both got what we wanted. No debts. "Let's go." I stood up. "That's all for today."As we walked out of the coffee shop, Julian suddenly stopped. "Aurora, something's happening on the overpass ahead."I followed his gaze. A figure was standing on the outside of the bridge railing, ready to jump at any second. "Damn it." I cursed and sprinted toward the bridge. Julian was right behind me. By the time we reached the bridge, the person already had one foot off the edge. It was a woman in an expensive Chanel suit, but her hair was a mess and half her makeup was smeared. "Don't come any closer!" she screamed hysterically. "Stay away!"I st

"This signature on your fire permit is wrong. Your club is shutting down today." The fat inspector from City Hall slapped the seal hard on my bar. I sat on a barstool, slowly blowing out a puff of cigar smoke. "This paper was legal yesterday, but suddenly it's wrong today. Who gave you the balls to come messing around on my turf?" I glared at him coldly. The fat inspector wiped his sweat, pretending to stay tough. My fingers slowly slipped toward the holster at my waist. Just then, a slender hand pressed down on the seal. "The signature looks perfectly legal to me. Mr. Inspector, are you overstepping your bounds?"The fat inspector was about to snap, but when he saw the federal credentials the man flashed, his face turned white. He didn't even dare to leave a parting threat before scurrying away with his men. "The license issue is sorted."The man in the sharp suit pushed up his glasses and dropped a stack of files on my desk. I looked up and recognized that gentle face. Juli

Word travels fast in the underworld. Aurora didn't walk away with nothing. I carved a massive chunk of flesh right off the Vitiello family's bones. Soon after, Marcello threw a high-profile wedding for Chloe, who had just divorced Julian. Ironically, the golden girl I supposedly stole from him was back in his arms. "Boss, you have guests."I was in my new Detroit office, tallying the spoils of my takeover. The man who walked in was my oldest brother, whom I hadn't seen in ages. Along with my biological mother. Three years apart, and they had aged terribly. The scar on my brother’s forehead—where I smashed him—was still visible. My mother’s hair was half gray. "Aurora." My brother’s voice was hoarse. "How have you been?"I didn't look up, just kept flipping through the files. "Spit it out."They sat on the couch. My brother pulled a land deed from his briefcase. "This is a prime plot at the Chicago docks. Worth a fortune," he said cautiously. "Consider it compensation from the
