Juan didn’t say anything when the car stopped. He looked up at the building through the window, sitting still for a few seconds. Then he stepped out, pulling the door shut behind him and walking slowly toward the entrance.

Hill City didn’t look like much from the outside, just glass and stone, but everyone knew what it was. The guards didn’t ask him anything, they just stared and stepped aside after checking his name on the list. He kept walking without glancing at them, heading through the glass doors and into the elevator.

The lobby was quiet, too clean, and it smelled like furniture polish and something bitter. The lights were white and cold, and the woman at the front desk barely looked up as he passed her.

He pressed the number Marco had given him and waited. The elevator moved slow, and his reflection in the mirrored walls didn’t look right, like he hadn’t slept in days. He ran a hand through his hair and adjusted his coat, then let his hand fall to his side and didn’t move agai

The crate has the symbol of the meridian circle right at the top centre of it. Juan's eyes flicked away from there so as to avoid suspicion, while an uneasy feeling settled in his gut. Giuseppe wasn't the boss, yet the meridian logo was there. Why were they even so open about their operations. For something that was likely supposed to be a secret, they were throwing their logo around pretty carelessly. He looked at the boss who pigged up a cigarette and out it forward for one of his men to light for him. Was this man just a cover up for Giuseppe? Was Giuseppe secretly pulling strings somewhere?Or what if the context of the recording had meant something else entirely?"You seem lost in thoughts," the boss commented after taking a slow drag of his cigarette. "I remembered something that has me worried," Juan said smoothly. "Hm," the man harrumphed. "I hear you're new around here," Juan said offhandedly. "The men say you came here... You're turning the village around with good dee

“So,” the man on his right said, squinting against the light, “how did you meet your woman?”Juan smiled a little. “At a friend’s dinner,” he said. “She barely spoke that night. I thought she wasn’t interested.”The other man laughed, tucking his hands into his pockets. “And she came around?”“She did,” Juan said. “It took a few weeks. She likes quiet places, nothing crowded. We spend most evenings at small cafés. Or ok one of my farm houses.”“That’s nice,” the first man said. “Most women I know like loud music.”“She’s different,” Juan said. “She loves books, and late walks, and tea even when she doesn’t drink it all.”They nodded, asking more questions as they went—how long he had known her, what meals she liked best, if she was the serious type or the playful type. Juan answered with easy words, adding small details about her soft laugh and the way she teased him for sleeping late. He kept his pace steady and his mind alert, marking every turn of the path. The road grew narrower u

Arya lowered the house phone and kept staring at the silent receiver, the sound of her own breathing loud in the quiet room. Her heart thudded faster as Juan’s last words replayed in her mind. He had said the word location in a slow, careful way, like he wanted her to notice, and she couldn’t stop wondering if that meant he left his phone’s GPS on so someone could track him if things went bad. Or was she reading too much into it and scaring herself for no reason? The part about “the boss buying everything and selling again” twisted in her thoughts too. That could only mean Giuseppe. He had a hideout a couple of miles past Val D’oro, and Juan knew that. If he was being taken there, it meant something serious was already happening. She didn’t wait to think it through any longer. She hurried down the hall toward Belle’s room, her steps quick even though her chest felt tight. Belle would know what to do, and Arya needed someone who would listen without wasting time. The door to Belle’s ro

Juan kept his face easy and lifted his shoulders as if it was nothing. “Oh?” he said in a strong dialect, his words bending with the accent of a man from the south. “Where do you know me from, friend?”He knew that if he dismissed them, they might be suspicious. In reality, every stranger was always curious to know how a stranger knew them so he decided to act that way. The man squinted harder, scratching his cheek. His eyes narrowed, then he shook his head with a quick laugh. “Ah, never mind. Thought you were someone else.”Juan gave him a small nod, then turned as though he had somewhere simple and unimportant to be. His steps were steady, his bag pressed close to his side. He kept his chin down but let his eyes slide just enough to the corner of the wagon. The man’s posture shifted suddenly. His shoulders stiffened, his head tilted just slightly, and then he raised two fingers toward the men unloading.Juan’s chest tightened, though his face stayed calm. From behind the wagon, two

He gritted and cursed silently. "Juan needs to be told."The crates disappeared down the side alley where the wagon had disappeared, the men hauling them in at a rush. The two guards by the well shifted positions, looking down the road again.Luis straightened his back, forcing his face into a scowl. "Keep walking."Rafael did the same, though for one moment too long his eyes focused on the emblem burned into the wood before he moved away.As they passed by, one of the men beside the wagon glanced their way and raised a hand. "You two—where are you heading?"Luis froze momentarily before answering. "Looking for work. Farm work, field work, anything."The man narrowed his eyes and moved forward. "Numerous men already coming forward. What makes you worth hiring?"Rafael's pulse pounded in his ears, but he forced himself to be calm. "We don't require much. Food and somewhere to rest. Strong arms, quick hands. No trouble."The man looked them over, his gaze piercing. Behind him, another c

Carlo and Domingo were next to the storage shed with the wood cart drawn out into the open area. The wheels creaked when Carlo pushed it a small step forward, checking if it would suffice."It feels too empty," Carlo remarked, nodding toward the cart. "If we take it out like this, they will catch us before we reach halfway down the road."Domingo dumped a small crate of apples into it. "So we add provisions. Who examines merchants with food?"Carlo frowned, leaning on the handle. "Merchants do not stock up on just apples. We need cloth, tools, something that is sensible.""Then go and get it," said Domingo, wiping his hands on his trousers. "You are the one who has all the ideas."Carlo muttered under his breath but we! t back into the shed. When he came out, he was carrying a roll of heavy-looking fabric bound up. He threw it in with the apples and stepped back to examine. Ok"Better," he said. "Still doesn't look heavy enough though."Domingo walked back and forth beside the cart, s
