THE CONFESSION

The word slipped out of Lilian’s mouth and fell into the room like a broken glass. Jessie looked at her in disbelief. Everywhere went silent immediately. They were seated beside each other facing the television.

Lillian nodded her head, “Yes, Jessie. I kissed Alex.”

Jessie froze.

Not in a calm way. Her eyes widened in disbelief at first, then her lips parted as if she wanted to laugh it off. To say Lillian was joking, but she had always seen it coming.

Jessie waited for Lillian

The greenhouse was originally Alex's father's, and Alex made sure he took care of it since his passing. Lillian Lillian had found it six weeks after she arrived. She had been exploring the estate freely because of the freedom she now has. She opened the greenhouse door on a Tuesday and stood in the warmth of the room, and the green smell made her feel calm. She asked for seeds and didn't explain what she wanted to use them for, but everything was delivered to her and even more. Four varieties of roses with a good set of gloves and a trowel in it wrap. She had never asked Marcus if it was Alex who had arranged it, but she was certain it was a command. She began planting the roses when the weather began to change. The day darkened. The glass went amber at first and then a warm orange color. ThenShe heard the door. She looked up.Alex was standing in the entrance to the greenhouse with two mugs of tea. He was in his work clothes. He was wearing a black Armani suit. She looked at t

The school was the kind of high school that was filled with a converted Victorian building filled with little children. Justin liked it for reasons he didn't know. Something about the way the old parts and new parts didn't match and how the hallways always smelled of old wood. He was coming out of math class on a Thursday when the woman approached him. She was standing near the gate, which was the visitor territory, but the school was relaxed about things like that. She was in her mid 20s and looked pretty as she smiled at him. "Justin," she called his name. He stopped walking and looked at the stranger trying to recognize her. "Who are you?" he asked her."I'm Vanessa. An old friend of your sister's. We were close a while back. I've been trying to get in touch with her. I thought maybe you could help me pass along a message."Justin looked at her.He was still little but not stupid. His sister had always warned him not to be too warm to strangers and not to give information.

She found them in a shoebox. A sky blue cardboard. A brand of shoes that no longer existed. Stored on the highest shelf of the room when she moved her father's remaining belongings. She had been avoiding that box for years, even when Jessie and Justin had moved. From grief and that particular feeling of finding a version of her father she didn't know. She found it on a Wednesday afternoon after a visit to the penthouse. Everywhere was quiet. She climbed onto the chair to reach the shelf, and the shoebox tilted. She could see some papers sliding to the floor. She picked them up and went through them. She went through the letters; there was no confession, but one of the documents, buried deeper inside the box, corresponds to a name in the logistics of Alexander Nick’s operation. Her father had been a gardener, and she discovered he had been a carrier, moving packages around the city. He only told her he was a gardener. And that he had been too. She had seen his hands in the soil, h

The intelligence arrived on a Tuesday from a briefing that Marcus had; the meeting was held for hours inside Alex’s office. Marcus slid some documents across Alex’s desk. Alex read it twice and closed the folder. He looked out the window at the garden, a field where Lillian was walking with her morning coffee in her hand and still in her cardigan. Female. Mid-twenties. Frequent access to the penthouse. Three confirmed contacts with secondary nodes in Vicenzo's network over the past six weeks. The intelligence didn't have a name yet. Marcus and his team were working on it. Alex signed. “The profile described Lillian, and this must be from someone close to her. How did Vicenzo get his hands on this information?”He watched Lillian walk in the garden and touch one of the flowers with two fingers, the way she always did. He turned back to his desk and picked up his phone. She mentioned up at breakfast, which was already a sign she had been thinking about it. Lillian tended to save dif

66The car drove into the mansion at eleven in the morning, and Jessie stepped out smiling widely. She stepped out and stood in the driveway, her eyes scanning the whole mansion. Her lips parted in awe and her eyes widened. She had no idea the mansion was large. Lillian had described it, the garden, the huge field and the luxurious building, but standing in front of it made her feel different. Lillian didn't describe it the way she had seen it. It was massive. She stood in the driveway for a few minutes before stepping into the house.Sam had opened the front door before she reached it. She felt like royalty at the moment, and she instantly wished she were Lillian. "Ms Jessie", he said. "Lillian is in the garden."The mansion was not what Jessie had expected. She had built it in her mind as something cold and quiet. She imagined it to be big but surrounded by deep sorrows. She walked through the house, following Sam from behind, and found it luxurious and filled with life. She s

The argument created tension between them even though Alex tried to calm her down. He remembered how she ended up in his house in the first place and how difficult it was for her. A contract was signed. They separated without discussion and went into their various rooms. After some time, Alex locked himself in his study. Lillian sat on her bed and looked at the ceiling. She thought about his face when he had said, 'I can't lose you.'The look of a man who had not entirely planned to say it and was not retreating from it either. She lay on her bed until it was midnight, when the house went quiet. Then she got up.The kitchen lights were off, just the low, warm light that glowed under the cabinet. She was filling a glass of water when she heard his footsteps in the corridor. She didn't turn around. She heard him enter by the kitchen and stilled. Everything went still, and then she turned around. He was standing in the doorway. No jacket, shirt untucked. He looked at her and didn't

The room was filled with silence and tension as Lillian screamed out her breath. Her hands gripped the edge of the bed, and her knuckles turned pale. Alex stood quietly with Marcus as the doctor helped stretch her ankle. His hands hovered around hers, hesitant as if he was unsure whether he should

Days had passed since Lillian’s ankle injury. Her ankle still throbbed faintly when she placed too much of her weight on it, even though the swelling had gone down. She had been confined to a penthouse. A luxurious prison with skyline windows, which she calls it. Lillian had not set her eyes on A

Lillian’s muscles screamed with every step that she took from yesterday’s shooting session. She thought she would be able to get enough rest, but she never knew this was just the beginning. Lillian’s POV:I sat in the SUV with Alex seated beside me. It was a cold and silent drive. My vision was still blurry, and all I could see were blurred neon lights from the streets. Liam’s words replayed in my mind. “She means nothing to me.” “Please don't shoot. I am expecting a child with my fi
