Chapter 10

Author: Good Night
Rose stiffened. As it was, everything that happened over the last two days felt strange to her. It was as though someone knew what her plan was and had secretly messed things up for her. She was worried that if such a person did exist, that person might tell Summer what her plan had been.

Thus, her heart trembled when she heard Summer's question.

"No. It's just… a similar outfit," Rose replied stiffly.

"Thank goodness," Summer said as she reached out to take Rose's hand with an expressionless face that was rather unlike her.

Frightened, Rose instinctively shrank back slightly, but Summer pretended not to notice Rose's reaction as she tucked Rose's hair behind her ear and said, "Here I was thinking that I'd failed to take good care of you last night, so that's why…"

"Summer, how did you get home last night?" Rose asked.

"Weren't you the one who brought me home?" Summer replied, looking rather startled. "I'm not sure what happened either, but my memory of last night is rather fuzzy. One minute, I was still talking to you, and the next, I was already home.

"I thought you brought me home. Didn't you?"

That left Rose feeling rather stumped. She had indeed drugged Summer with something that would cause some memory loss.

She felt chills down her spine. She had to be right. Someone was secretly foiling her plan—and that person was most likely the one who brought Summer home! Just who was it?

Despite trying her best, Rose couldn't figure out who it could be. Thanks to her efforts, Summer didn't have any friends. Everyone was far too busy scorning her to lend her a hand.

Could it have been one of the Hartfords? It didn't seem likely. The Hartfords cared about their reputation, and Henry doted on Summer. Even if they wanted to mess with Rose, they wouldn't have done it on Summer's birthday.

After failing to come up with a possible suspect, Rose grabbed Summer's hand and asked, "Summer, can you really not remember who brought you home yesterday?"

Shaking her head cluelessly, Summer replied, "I don't remember anything."

Rose started losing control of her emotions. "Come on! Think carefully now! Try and recall what happened!"

"Rose? You're scaring me!" Summer cried out as she removed her arm from Rose's grip.

Rose snapped back to her senses at once. Knowing that she had lost her composure, she teared up and started putting on a pity act again.

"I'm sorry. I don't know what has gotten into me. I'm so scared, Summer. I have a feeling that today is just the beginning. Those people won't stop coming after me!"

Then, she looked at Summer in terror and exclaimed, "Summer, if strange people approach you and tell you some kind of ridiculous story, you mustn't listen to them! If they're trying to ruin my life, they'll surely try to drive a wedge between us! You have to believe me!"

In the previous lifetime, Rose made use of Kristen's connections to enter the entertainment industry. Thanks to her brilliant acting skills, she soon became one of the hottest celebrities, too. Perhaps acting was her true calling after all.

She was a born actress who could put on quite the performance.

If not for the agonizing experiences Summer had gone through in the previous lifetime, she never would have expected Rose to be hiding such a depraved soul beneath her harmless appearance.

"Don't worry! I know what kind of person you are, Rose. No one can drive a wedge between us," Summer firmly declared, much to Rose's relief.

So long as Summer was still on her side, her scheme could proceed as planned. As she eyed Summer, she inwardly mocked Summer for being so easily tricked.

Even if the truth had been laid out in front of Summer, Rose knew that she simply had to say a few words and shed a few tears to get Summer to take her side. In that case, what was there to fret about?

"You're the best, Summer!" Rose said before attempting to hug Summer.

In the past, Summer would've loved hearing that, but now, she only felt disgusted. She swiftly avoided the hug, leaving Rose's arms hanging in the air.

"Hang on…" she began, as if she hadn't noticed Rose's reaction. "Weren't we together the whole time last night, Rose? Why weren't you with me toward the end? Where did you go?"

Rose had assumed last night's incident had been put behind them. The fact that Summer was abruptly bringing it up now made her anxious once more.

"I got too drunk last night, so I don't really remember what happened, either," Rose replied before choking on her sobs. "I'm so sorry, Summer! Thank goodness you're alright. Otherwise, I would never be able to make it up to you!"

Summer's eyes flashed coldly.

"It's fortunate that some kind-hearted person brought me home safely. I should ask Grandpa to find out who it was and thank them," she said.

Immediately, Rose was gripped with fear. Her heart seemed to stop beating. "You can't!"

"Why not?" Summer asked.

Why not? Rose couldn't believe the idiotic Summer was asking her why not!

She knew there was a huge possibility that the person who brought Summer home last night was the person who was secretly messing with her.

But even if that weren't the case, she couldn't possibly let Henry find that person. That would only expose the fact that she had secretly taken Summer to a bar last night.

Plus, if Henry heard about Summer losing her memories and started getting suspicious, Rose knew she would be done for!

"You can't let Mr. Hartford Senior find out I took you to a bar last night!" Rose said tearfully. "Something this terrible has already happened to me. What will Mr. Hartford Senior think if he finds out I took you to a bar?

"He would think I'm an indecent young woman who's a bad influence on you. He loves you very much. I'm sure he'll kick me out of the house because of it!

"My life is bad enough as it is now, Summer. I can't lose my home, too. Please don't tell them!"

Summer sneered as she heard the oh-so-familiar speech. In the previous lifetime, Rose had done the same thing. She had gotten on her knees and begged Summer not to tell the Hartfords that she had brought Summer to the bar.

"Okay, I understand," Summer replied.

One would think that Summer should seize this chance to kick Rose out of the family, but she didn't think Rose would behave herself once she was no longer part of the family. Instead of letting Rose roam free, she chose to keep Rose nearby and continue to torment her slowly.

After all, compared to a quick, easy death, it was far more vicious to destroy a person by stealing everything from her and making her life a living hell.

This was what Rose taught her, so surely she had to make full use of the knowledge and pay Rose back in kind!

She didn't even need to ponder any further to figure out who was calling—Anthony.Just recalling that name alone made Summer feel a ball of fire raging in her heart. From the moment she realized the truth, her unrealistic feelings for him vanished completely, leaving nothing but derision and resentment behind."Alright. Get some rest and don't dwell on the situation too much," Summer said."Okay."Once Summer left the room, Rose immediately took the call. As Summer expected, it was indeed Anthony who called."What took you so long?" Anthony asked in displeasure."Summer was with me just now," Rose responded, keeping

It seemed like despite suffering such a severe setback, Rose hadn't chosen to give up on her foolish plan. If nothing else unexpected happened, she would most likely be running into Anthony in the Hartford residence soon enough.Just then, Robin returned."How are the investigations coming along? Have you figured out who those people were?" Henry asked grimly.Shaking his head, Robin replied, "Ms. Sanderson doesn't remember the time or place of the incident. This outdated, cheesy thing? What on earth was cute about it?"Is it not?" Mason looked up at the group."It is! Very cute indeed!" They all nodded in unison.Mason then asked, "Has the entire system been breached?""We're trying to fix it!" Summer cracked her neck, ready to tackle the hackers on the site.Just then, Phoebe knocked on the door. "Ms. Hartford, are you still napping?"Summer shut her computer and went to open the door. As soon as it opened, the warm, sweet aroma of chestnut cake wafted in."Chestnut cake!" Her eyes lit up immediately, and she happily took the cake from Phoebe.Phoebe chuckled and said, "Ms. Hartford, you're such a slave to chestnut cake! Is it really that good?"Chestnut cake was Summer's absolute favorite treat. On second thought, she realized she hadn't had any for three years—not since her time in that dreadful psychiatric hospital.Summer set the cake down and hugged Phoebe. "Phoebe, how did you know I was craving this?"Oh, Summer… How big of a fool were you in your past life to have lost someone like Phoebe?"The pastry chef noticed you've been in a bad mood and made one for you," Phoebe explained. Phoebe fell silent.Rose was indeed a master at disguising herself. If Phoebe hadn't stumbled upon her little schemes by chance, she might never have realized Rose was a backstabber."So, what should we do now?" Phoebe asked."Nothing," Summer answered with a smile. "Everything stays the same. We don't make any sudden moves. Considering how cunning Rose is, we have to strike at the right time to crush her at once. Otherwise, she'll find a way to retaliate.""You're right!" Phoebe quickly nodded. "The more critical the situation, the calmer we need to be.""Also, don't confront her or try to warn her in any way," Summer instructed firmly.Phoebe had never been one to mince words when it came to Rose, often making cutting remarks or mocking her in front of Summer.Summer was worried that Rose might once again target Phoebe in this lifetime. But fortunately, Phoebe was quick to catch on and nodded in agreement.Summer couldn't help but reflect on the tragic end of her previous lif

"We have plenty of rooms. If the tutors are willing, of course they can stay," Kristen replied. As in the previous life, all four private tutors agreed to stay. Rose's mood visibly brightened. After chatting with the tutors for a while, Kristen called Summer to step outside."Mom, is something wrong?" Summer asked.Kristen was still not fully accustomed to Summer calling her "Mom" so casually. She cleared her throat and asked, "Do you not like Anthony?""Why do you ask?""You're always rude to me, but not to others," Kristen replied as she glanced at Summer. "If you don't like him, just say so. I can make an excuse to keep him from coming."Summer shook her head. "No need. Rose trusts them. Haven't you noticed? Her mood's a lot better than it was this morning. Right now, there's nothing more important than making her happy.""Then, they will only teach her. "I got it." Summer knew that going head-to-head with the Hunt family this time must have caused Mason to be caught in the middle of some immense pressure and criticism. So, she didn't want him to worry about her too much.Chandler's incident had stirred massive public attention following Summer's live stream. In the next two days, more and more people were speaking out online. The police department responsible for the investigation was finally compelled to issue a statement, promising a lawful and thorough investigation into the case.Paul's family had rested at the Hartford residence for a day before they started to recover a little."We won't hold the funeral here. Our family back home is already handling the arrangements," said Paul's wife, Bailey Oak. Her eyes were still swollen from crying.Kristen nodded. "Alright. Don't worry. Mr. West has worked with our family for over ten years. He was practically one of us, so we'll make sure to take care of your family in the future."

"You know how vicious the Hunt family can be. Back then, I…" Kristen instinctively pressed her hand to her lower abdomen with an expression of grief. "I'm afraid of losing another child."Luke had an expression that was full of heartache. He gently pulled Kristen into his arms. "That won't happen. From now on, we will face everything together. We'll definitely protect Summer."Can I really do that?" Kristen's tears fell uncontrollably.Back then, she thought she could protect the child in her belly, too. But in the end…Luke said firmly, "You can. You definitely can. My wife has always been the strongest person I know!""Yes." Kristen nodded as she leaned against his shoulder. They had never spoken of that pain over the past 20 years. This was the first time. "Something like that happened?" Rosanna looked shocked. She had been locked up at the time.Jane sighed deeply. "I just heard about it, too. The kidnappers told her not to go to the police. They said they'd kill the kids if she did. In the end, she didn't report it and ended up paying 70 million dollars in ransom."Jane sighed again. "But she ran into some real monsters. After they got the money, they sent her a location to get the kids. When she got there, all she saw were their decomposing bodies!"Rosanna covered her mouth. "Oh, my God! Did they catch the kidnappers in the end?"Jane shook her head regretfully. "They were professionals, so how could anyone catch them? She lost her money and her children. Mrs. Mills fell seriously ill and is still in the hospital.""Those kidnappers are truly heartless!" Rosanna said."They were only missing for three days. Based on the state of the bodies, the kids were probably killed the moment they were kidnapped," Jane said.As Rosanna lis

He exploded on the spot. "Who leaked something this private? Check with Chandler's school! I'm suing them! Every last person who leaked it!"The lawyer said gravely, "I've already checked. "Tell Grandma I was here," Mason said before he turned to leave. These past few days had been unbearable for Aspen, especially with everything Summer exposed that day.All these years, people had assumed that there had been something between him and Kristen. It had always been something he could brag about, but the truth was exposed to the public today. That last shred of connection he had with Kristen had shattered as well.On top of that, Chandler was about to face serious criminal charges. As he stepped out of the elevator, all he saw were members of the Hunt family, gathered in full force.Mason knew exactly what was going on.These people hadn't shown up out of affection. They were just afraid that Victoria might actually die, so they were here early to wait for the inheritance."Mason, what the hell did you do to Grandma?"The moment they saw Mason, they pounced like a pack of wild dogs, but not a single one of them actually dared to touch him.If Victoria did die, Mason's threat level would skyrocket a hundredfold."This is a hospital.
