CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY NINE

ZOEY

The maid knocked once and opened the door before I could answer.

Her eyes didn’t meet mine. “The lord wishes to see you.”

I didn’t move.

She stood there for a second like she wanted to say something else, but then she bowed and left the door open. I almost didn’t go. I wanted to scream, to slam the door and tell him I wasn’t some pet to be summoned but I went.

The hallway was dim, lit by soft golden lamps that didn’t give off warmth. The floor was made of black stone that swallowed sound, I walked barefoot and still felt cold.

I hated how quiet it all was like the house was listening.

They’d given me dresses again, pale silks and soft fabrics I didn’t ask for. I wore one now, just because it was better than walking in the same torn clothes I’d arrived in but every stitch made me feel like I was wrapped in someone else’s hands.

I reached the door at the end of the corridor, two maids opened it without a word and I stepped into the room.

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTYZOEYThe hallway felt longer than it should have. I walked slowly, the soft lamps along the walls flickering like they were tired too. My feet were cold against the smooth floor, but I didn’t turn back.I had just left Viktor and every part of me still itched from the things he’d said.“You’re still here. There’s always a choice. You’ll stay.”I hated how he spoke like he already knew me, like the story was written, and I was just acting it out.I turned the corner toward the wing where my room was, but something was different. The hallway didn’t stretch the same way. The end was darker, like the shadows had thickened and there, on the left, a door stood open that hadn’t been there before. It wasn’t huge and luxurious like the other doors in the mansion. There was no gold or carvings, just a plain, heavy door, cracked slightly open, like it had been waiting for me.I should’ve walked away but that thread inside me, the one that had sparked earlier, it tug

  • The Mate She Can’t See   Hope wasn’t dead

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY EIGHTGRAHAMThe air changed the moment we crossed the border. It wasn’t just colder, it was wrong and too quiet and still like the wind itself was afraid to move. The trees here didn’t creak, there were no shadows, it felt like nothing was alive. Everything felt like it was paused, like a painting that had trapped the world inside it.I took another step forward and instantly felt her presence. She was here.I didn’t need anyone to tell me. I didn’t need magic or maps or guards to point the way. I could feel her, not through the bond because that had gone quiet a long time ago, but through something deeper, something that refused to die.“Are you sure this is the right place?” Ronald asked behind me, his voice low.I didn’t answer, but my hand was already on the hilt of my blade, but I didn’t draw it yet.Every inch of me wanted to run and break down every door and search every room until I found her but I’d learned something from losing her, I couldn’t

  • The Mate She Can’t See   Just incase

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY SEVENZOEYThe sky looked the same as it always did in this place. It was pale, lifeless, and cold. It didn’t matter if it was morning or evening anymore. Time felt strange here. I didn’t know how long I had been in this room and I didn’t even know what day it was.I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the floor. The room was still perfect, still soft and clean and full of expensive things, but it felt like a prison more than ever now. There was something different in the air today.I couldn’t explain it, but I felt it. There was shift and a pressure in my chest. My heart beat faster, even though nothing had changed around me. The silence was the same, the cold air, the soft glow of candles on the wall but I felt it.Something had changed.I stood slowly and walked to the window. The garden below looked still. The wind didn’t move the trees, the flowers didn’t sway. It was like the world had paused.I pressed my hand to the glass. And for one strange s

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY SIXGRAHAMWe finally reached the edge of vampire territory. I stopped walking and stared ahead. The trees here were tall and strange. The air felt heavier, like something thick was flowing with it. I could feel the change even in my bones. This place didn’t want us here but I didn’t care.Behind me, the wolves shifted. Ronald came up beside me, breathing steady, eyes scanning everything. Idris and Malcolm stood a little behind him, watching the path with quiet alertness. No one said anything. The silence around us didn’t feel peaceful. It felt like a warning.“They know we’re here,” I said.Ronald nodded. “Then why is it so quiet?”“Because they want it to be,” I answered. “They’re not hiding us from them. They’re hiding from us.”“Or setting a trap,” Idris muttered.I didn’t respond because I didn’t care if it was a trap. I wanted them to try. I wanted them to come out so I could finally let this anger inside me do what it was meant to do.We kept walki

  • The Mate She Can’t See   They are here

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVEZOEYI woke up to silence. Everywhere was too quiet. No soft footsteps outside the door, no sound of trays clinking, no distant voices, just a heavy silence that made the hairs on my skin stand.I sat up slowly, blinking at the familiar walls of the room I hated so much. The curtains were open, but the light coming through the tall windows was not bright, almost like it was shy. A strange feeling filled my chest.Something was wrong.I swung my legs off the bed and stood. My knees wobbled for a second, but I steadied myself. The cold floor made me shiver. Usually by now, two maids would have come in with breakfast or dresses or some useless message from their “lord.” but not today.Where was everyone?I crossed the room and opened the door. The hallway was empty, there was no guards, and no maids, just that same cold silence.I took a slow step back, closing the door again. A part of me was scared to hope, maybe they’d all left and maybe this was my
