Chapter 2

Autor: Cecilia Bright
I picked up my phone and opened my chat with Keith.

I'd had it pinned at the top for two years. Beside his profile picture was the contact name I'd saved for him:

[My Keith]

I stared at it for a few seconds, then changed it back to just Keith.

I opened our message history.

There were too many messages to count.

Keith: [It's getting colder. Put on a jacket so you don't catch a cold.]

Keith: [Babe, your stomach's acting up again. Skip the iced drinks.]

Keith: [Babe, I'll pick you up after my meeting. Want me to come with you while you get your nails done?]

I deleted them all.

Then I opened my photo gallery and stopped at a picture from last year, when I'd come down with a high fever.

It had been three in the morning. I'd barely been conscious when Keith carried me to the hospital.

When I woke up, he was asleep with his head resting on the edge of my hospital bed.

In the photo, he was still asleep, one hand holding my wrist.

I'd posted it online with the caption:

[Someone promised he'd stay by my side forever.]

Keith: [Count on it.]

I kept scrolling.

Our first trip together.

Our first kiss.

The day we brought Biscuit home.

I deleted the photos one by one.

Somewhere along the way, tears started slipping down my face.

If all of it had been fake, maybe it wouldn't have hurt this much.

But I knew those moments had been real. Keith really had been good to me. And somehow, that only made it hurt more.

As I kept scrolling, I started noticing things I'd never paid attention to before.

For a while, Keith had constantly been browsing job boards.

"Since when is your company hiring for brand marketing?"

"Just helping a friend look for a job."

Not long after that, Anna landed a job at a thriving company.

From then on, Keith started making regular business trips there.

I'd even teased him about it.

"Since when does Sterling Group work with companies like that?"

Now it all made sense. Anna worked there.

After that, she moved up quickly and landed several coveted projects everyone else had been scrambling for.

Then there was Anna herself. She was always asking about Keith and me.

Once, she'd even asked, "Would it bother you if there was someone he could never get over?"

I'd laughed at the time.

"If he ever has an emotional affair, I'm done. I'd walk away and never look back."

My phone slipped from my hand onto the bed.

The words suddenly felt painfully ironic.

Never look back.

And yet today, I'd looked back.

That was how I'd found out everyone had been lying to me.

Julian too.

For the past two years, he and Keith had kept having these random "guys' nights."

"Natalie, I'm stealing Keith tonight. Guys' night. You're not invited."

I'd never checked up on them.

I'd always just waved them off.

"Please do. I'm enjoying a night to myself!"

But how many of those supposedly guys-only nights had Anna actually gone to?

I couldn't bear to think about it anymore.

The cabin felt stuffy, and I couldn't sleep. I threw on a jacket and stepped outside for some air.

But the moment I reached the rear deck, I heard Anna's voice.

"Be honest. Have you really moved on?"

The ocean breeze swept across the deck. I stood frozen in the shadows.

"No."

One word. It felt like I'd been stabbed.

"Neither have I."

They stood there staring out at the ocean.

A long moment passed before Keith spoke again.

"Anna, you're going to be fine. Before I marry Natalie, I'll make sure you're settled.

"I'll introduce you to someone well-off from our circle. Someone who can give you a good life."

My fingers tightened around the railing.

Anna lowered her voice.

"You never should've introduced me to Natalie. If we'd never become friends, none of this would've happened."

Keith answered, "If you'd never met her, how else would you have gotten into this circle?

"Natalie saw you as a friend, so she took you to parties and introduced you to people she knew. I just never thought she'd turn around today."

He paused.

"But don't worry. Even without Natalie, you still have me. I'll keep taking you to galas and cocktail parties.

"Once you've found your footing, I won't have to worry about you anymore."

I stood there, unable even to cry. All I could do was let out a bitter laugh.

Anna becoming my friend hadn't been a coincidence.

I'd taken her to parties.

Introduced her to people.

Brought her into my social circle.

Keith had been using me all along to get her into our circle, one connection at a time.

I couldn't listen anymore.

I went back to my cabin and called my best friend, Vivian Blake.

She was vacationing on Mariner's Key nearby. Just yesterday, she'd asked if I wanted to join her.

I'd turned her down.

Me: [No, I'm staying on the yacht with Keith and the others.]

The call connected.

"Natalie, do you have any idea what time it is? Why are you calling me this late?"

"Vivian, can you come get me?"

She went quiet for a few seconds.

"Aren't you with Keith?"

"I'm breaking up with him. I don't want to stay here with them anymore."

Another pause.

Then she said, "Send me your location. I'll come to get you tomorrow. Wait for me."

  • The Moment I Looked Back, I Won   Chapter 9

After the door closed, the house fell quiet again. That night, Mom knocked on my door."Natalie, your father and I really were wrong this time."Her eyes were a little red."We always thought you and Keith had known each other for so many years, and we'd watched him grow up."No matter what happened, we never thought he'd truly hurt you."So even when you told us how much you were hurting, our first instinct was still to tell you to put up with it."I'm sorry."My throat tightened, but in the end, all I said was, "I know."Some hurts didn't disappear the moment someone said sorry. But at least someone was finally willing to admit that I'd really been hurt.A few months later, Vivian was heading back to Alderwyn. Before she left, she asked me, "Want to come with me for a while? Stay as long as you want."I'd turned her down plenty of times before so I could stay with Keith."Sure."We booked our tickets for two weeks later. The night before we left, I still got a message from Keith.Kei

Anna came to see me the next day.At the cafe, she looked much more worn out than she had on the yacht. She wasn't wearing any makeup, and her eyes were swollen. As soon as I sat down, she slid a folder across the table."I've pulled out of all these projects."I didn't touch it."That's got nothing to do with me."Her hand drew back slightly."I'm leaving Cresthaven. I'm already handing things over at work."I looked up at her."Why?""What's the point of staying?"She gave a bitter smile."Everyone in our circle is saying you and Keith aren't getting engaged because of me."Even the people who used to think I was capable bring up Keith the moment they see me now."She looked down and stirred her coffee."You were right. I did benefit from being your friend."Those parties, those people... without you, I could've worked for years and still never gotten into that world."But back then, I really thought we could keep going like this."I didn't say anything. Something told me she wasn't

After I brought Biscuit home, my parents finally realized I wasn't bluffing. Our fights never lasted more than two days.By the third day, he'd show up with something I liked to eat, Mom would say a few words to smooth things over, and that would be the end of it.But this time, the engagement party was canceled. I'd moved everything out of the house in Southcrest. Even Biscuit had come home with me.That evening, Dad called me downstairs."The Sterlings will be here in a bit."I was wiping Biscuit's paws."What for?""To sort this out."Charles and Laura arrived at seven, with Keith following behind them.Laura let out a sigh."Natalie, everyone's had a few days to cool off."What happened on the yacht was Keith's fault."And he's promised us it won't happen again."Keith looked at me."I'm sorry."Dad got straight to the point."If Anna's the problem, then we'll deal with the problem."Keith frowned.Dad continued, "From now on, she stays away from all of you."If her job has any tie

  • The Moment I Looked Back, I Won   Chapter 6

After the hotel canceled the engagement party, Keith finally seemed to realize I wasn't cooling off as quickly as usual.Once I'd supposedly had enough fun, Vivian and I headed back to Cresthaven. The first thing I did was move out.Keith and I had been living together in the house in Southcrest ever since we started dating.I'd had a hand in everything, from the yard to the curtains.Even the hideous couch in the living room had been custom-made because Keith hated how I was always sprawled out on the carpet. The car had barely stopped when barking erupted from the yard."Woof!"Biscuit shot out of the house so fast he nearly tumbled down the steps.I crouched, and he barreled straight into my arms, his tail wagging like crazy."Miss me?"Biscuit licked my hand like crazy. The housekeeper stood in the doorway, smiling."Ever since you left, he's been waiting by the door every day. At night, he even curls up in your room."I held Biscuit without saying anything.Keith and I had raised

  • The Moment I Looked Back, I Won   Chapter 5

After Vivian brought me back to Mariner's Key, the first thing she did was call a doctor. It took two full days for my fever to finally break.Keith kept texting me the entire time.Keith: [Has your fever broken? Remember to take your medicine.]Keith: [Go easy on the canned peaches. Your throat's inflamed, and too much won't help.]It was the same familiar tone he'd always used, as if nothing between us had changed. On the third day, another text came in.Keith: [Let me know when you're done having fun. I'll come get you.]Done having fun...So that was how he saw it.I'd packed my suitcase, broken up with him, and left on Vivian's yacht for another island. And somehow, to Keith, I was just off having fun for a few days.Vivian leaned over and glanced at my screen."Does he seriously think you're just out here clearing your head and you'll go back when you're done?""Probably."She scoffed."Then let him wait."I turned off my phone.Once my fever was gone, Vivian convinced me to stay

  • The Moment I Looked Back, I Won   Chapter 4

I laid my suitcase open on the floor and started packing.Everything Keith had given me over the years went straight into the trash. The vintage watch I'd bought for Anna went into my suitcase instead. She didn't deserve it.I wheeled my suitcase out of the cabin. The birthday party was still going on.Gifts were piled in front of Anna, and Keith was beside her, helping her cut the cake. The moment everyone saw me with my suitcase, they froze.Keith was the first to frown."What are you doing?""Vivian's coming to get me. I'm not staying here anymore."Mom stared at me."Isn't she vacationing on an island nearby?"Dad frowned too."You still have a fever. Why are you running around like this?""I can see a doctor there too."I kept walking.Keith stepped directly into my path."Natalie, I already explained what happened yesterday."I gave a short laugh."Then why did you say last night that you still hadn't moved on from her?"And why did you say you had to make sure she was settled be
