Meetings

The school was larger than I thought. Blair told me there were four sleeping quarters for each rank. The alphas were bigger, but they had the smallest group. I was surprised that Blair was so nice. She gave me a semi-tour. I liked to believe she had matured and this wasn’t a poly only for her to humiliate me later.

We stopped at the door. I turned to her. It had sunk in the past couple of minutes. I was an omega. A lowly omega. I had no expectations when coming here other than being sent back for not having a wolf.

“I’ll show you the Omega Quarters later.” Her brows furrowed. She looked sorry for me. I guess she knew how I felt.

“Thanks.” I pushed the door into Athena’s office.

She looked up from her desk. “Yes, Miss Chambers, I was just about to send someone to come get you.”

I wandered over to her table and sat down.

“Am I really an omega?” I asked.

She sighed and turned in her chair with wheels. She opened a cabinet behind her chair and pulled out a brown top. I dipped my head. Yup, that was my answer.

“It was easy to tell, considering you’d never shifted.” She said.

“You knew before you called me over? Why? I’m as good as human.”

“No, not necessarily. Yes, it’s unlikely you’ll ever shift, but you still have omega qualities. You might not be first in line for breeding, but you can still serve your pack. It turns out Henry Pack is low on omegas.”

Great, I’m here because there was no one else. In most packs like mine, omegas were taken as mates only for breeding purposes. Or fucking purposes. Some weird twist of fate omegas were producing healthy and strong wolves. It wasn’t always the case.  I know the Dale and Sanders packs banned mating with omegas completely in hopes of phasing them out. Dumb luck because it didn’t work that way.

“There’s no reason to worry. Laws have changed, and omegas have some roles other than cleaning service in the pack.” Athena said.

“Yeah, I can become a kindergarten teacher or work in the alpha's house forever.”

Athena folded her fingers together and stared at me. “Did you have other aspirations, Miss Chambers?”

“Yeah, well, I wanted to go to college. Get a degree in nutrition, and a house by the beach for me and my mom for a while. Now I’m stuck here for five years.”

“You’ll get a great education here. And the course you’ve spoken about is perfect. You can obtain it here and help your pack greatly.”

I dipped my head and nodded. It was always about the pack. The good side of being human was not having to be included. I stood up to leave.

“If you ever have doubts about your position in your pack, you can always speak to your alpha.”

Alex. Now I had to bow down to him? Oh, I was so getting kicked out. I nearly burst out laughing.

“I can?”

She nodded, a faint smile forming on her face. I could tell she was a hard woman, maybe she was just being nice because I was new.

“Unfortunately, the alphas are all in a meeting right now.”

A meeting, huh? I thanked Athena and walked out of her office. I found Blair fiddling with her fingers on the waiting bench.

“I see you got the uniform.” She frowned at the brown getup.

“Yeah— do you know where the alphas have their meetings?”

“Yeah, downstairs in the castle basement. It’s really private. Why?”

“I want to see Alex.” I doubted it was that hard to find a basement.

“Wait, no!” Blair darted in front of me, holding her hands out. “You can’t just barge into a meeting.”

“Why not? I just want to see him, let him know I’m here.”

“Are you crazy, Chambers? Of course you are! Alex is an alpha now. Worse, he’s around airheaded alphas who won’t hesitate to send you to the nurse.”

I should have taken the fear in her eyes seriously, but all I wanted was a sneak peek of my best friend. Just like the first-year beta girls. I bit my bottom lip and stared at her. My mind was made up.

Blair groaned. “You’re on your own, Chambers. This has to be a new record for dying on the first day!”

She flopped on the waiting bench outside Athena’s office.

“I’ll be right back. Alive.” I laughed on my way down the hall. The stone stairs were the third door to the locked door at the end of the hall that read ‘Remembrance Hall.’ Exploration for another day.

The more steps I descended, the more I regretted this. How far down was this basement? There had to be five hundred stairs to get through. I could hear yelling and slams or fists hammering down wooden tables. My heart rate picked up. What if Blair wasn’t just pulling my leg? What if Alex had changed? Gosh, what if he didn’t even recognize me? I barely had boobs the last time he saw me. Now, I had hips and a defined waist.

The door was right in front of me, yelling blurring from the inside.

“That’s an unfair advantage you’re setting Dale to win.” Someone blasted.

I let out a deep breath. “There’s no way I’m walking down five hundred stairs not to walk through that door.”

My hand was on the door handle, and my heart was in my throat. I nudged the door in and the barking and yelling ceased. I wanted to turn and bolt. It was worse because I was going so slowly.

“What the fuck?” A feminine voice spat.

The door opened on me. My eyes quickly scanned the room for him. How dumb would I look if Alex wasn’t even here? He was, though. Stood over a long medium table with a map plastered to it. His brows formed a frown, disgust crystal on his face.

“Alex?”

“This better be good.” A guy in the room growled.

Alex straightened his spine, and his pale blue eyes relaxed. The disgust cleared away, and my heart started beating again.

***

Alex scurried around the table. The shouting and overlapping conversations started again.

“What the hell is going on?”

“Nothing. Carry on without me.” He grabbed my arm, turned me and shoved me out of the room.

“Alex!” A girl cried before the door slammed on her.

I tripped when Alex released me. While turning, I tripped on my own feet and stumbled into the wall. The shadows of the basement cast an eerie element on his face. I swallowed. I thought he recognized me. He took a step forward. I should learn to listen…

“Gabbie?” He closed the distance between us.

I nodded. He planted his hands on either side of me on the stone wall.

He looked down at me and chuckled. “I can’t believe it’s you.”

He wrapped me up in his arms. I let out the breath I’d been holding.

“Oh my gosh, I thought you didn’t remember me.” I fisted the back of his shirt and buried my head in his biceps.

He laughed, “You’re still an idiot. There’s no way I could forget you.” He said into my hair. “I almost thought you wouldn’t make it here.”

The door slammed against the wall, separating us.

A girl in a super short black leather skirt— it did not look uniform— glared at us.

“There better be a good explanation for this.”

She had on the same shirt as Alex, white with a red sash. This was the alpha group.

“Not now Leiah,” Alex said dismissively.

“Not now? You just walked out of a meeting? To… to hug her?”

Alex threw his head back and groaned. “This is Gabbie, my best friend. We can talk later.”

Leiah blinked and recoiled. “Best friend? I’m your mate.”

  • The Omega Best Friend    A Luna

“Not the traditional mating ceremony, a Luna deserves. I’m sorry, mate.”Kade kissed my bare shoulders. If this were a traditional ceremony, he wouldn’t be in the room. He rented a cottage near the water with a breathtaking view of a mountain covered with pine trees.I turned to face him. “It’s wonderful, Kade. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”“You know I want to give you the world.”Tears stained my eyes. “As long as I have you, I have everything.”He kissed my forehead. “You know what this means, right?”I groaned and stepped back. “You want to lock me up for another week?”“Gabbie, when you say I lock you up, you make it sound horrible.”After we moved to April Springs, Kade made good on his promise to lock me up for a week. We made mind-blowing love during that time, but he wouldn’t let me leave the apartment. Time went by quickly, but thinking back, I can’t believe we did that.I folded my arms and frowned.“It’s not like you couldn’t leave if you wanted to.”True. A knock came

  • The Omega Best Friend    A New Moon Rises

2 Weeks Later.Gabbie POVI tiptoed on all four paws, trying to make it out of the dense forest. Howls and barks came from all angles. I could see my house surrounded by trees and illuminated by floodlights. It was the last day of the full moon. A lot of the local wolves were going crazy. Kade and I went out last night and the night before that, but this night, he’d gone out with his buddies for a run in the woods and made me swear not to leave the house. My mate might be an Alpha, but he was paranoid as hell. If I wanted to make it home before him, I probably shouldn’t be tiptoeing. I stood and looked around. The scent of wet dogs attacked me from all sides.I started walking home. I paused when I heard a twig snap.Oh crap.It better not be an overexcited wolf looking for a good time because I’d been spoken for, for a long time. No one was there, so I continued walking.“Shift,” the command came, and my limbs were forced to obey.I curled into a ball as fur turned to smooth flesh, f

Gabbie POVEmery and I sat in the living room having breakfast. She wasn’t home when I arrived at three in the morning, but she was home when I woke up.“Meet anyone interesting last night?” I teased. She eyed me dangerously. “I’m never going clubbing again.”“I’ll take that as a yes,” I wiggled my brow.A knock came at the door, and Emery stood.“I’ll get it!”She yanked the door open and gasped.“Kade, I mean Kaden Sanders… Alpha Kade?”Kade leaned against the door.“Hi!” I stood nervously. “What are you doing here?”“We spoke about me coming over last night, remember?”Emery glared at me. “Aha! I told you he would come for you. I should have put money on it.”I cupped my eyes and shook my head.“I’ll go for a walk… a long walk,” she winked.Kade slipped in, and Emery slipped out.Kade cupped my cheeks and stared at me. “Are you alright? Anything hurt? The tree was rough.”I blushed. “Kade… I can heal now, remember?”He laughed. “Right.”“I’m not delicate anymore.”“Baby, you’ve nev

  • The Omega Best Friend    Shift of a full moon

Gabbie POV“Are you feeling sick again, Gabbie?” Emery asked as she prepared for her night out in my room.“I’m fine, I’m just tired.”She turned around holding a red lipstick tube. “You don’t look good. Think we should see a specialist or a witch.”I giggled. “We don’t need to see a witch. I just need to sleep.”“Are you sure you don’t want me to stay with you?”“What? No, go have fun. You deserve it.” I waved her off.I would forever be grateful that Emery chose to come to the academy with me to settle in a human town. I didn’t tell her about Alex’s offer even though I knew she would be supportive. My phone rang with a blocked number. Dad, I thought.“Hey, kid!” he boomed.I smiled. I never got tired of hearing his voice. “What’s up?”“Full-moon, I wanted to know if you’re still experiencing pain.”I rubbed my middle. I didn’t feel bad yet.“I’m good Dad… so Alex is back.”“Need to run again? I know a place.”My Dad’s mind was always on the run. “I don’t know what to do, Dad. I love

  • The Omega Best Friend    One Year Later

One Year LaterGabbie POV“I got a ten-dollar tip!” I flashed the brand-new dollars in front of Emery’s face. She frowned.“What table did you wait for?”“New guys. I hope they come back.”Emery placed her chin in her hand and exhaled. Her dark pigtails dangled on either side of her face in shiny coils.“Lucky you. All I got was a coupon for doughnuts from Mr. Olsen.”“At least we made rent before the month ends!” I beamed.“Yeah, so a little treat tonight won’t hurt.”I nibbled on my bottom lip. The full moon was tonight, and for the past four months, when the moon came around, I got sick. I got churning pains and jabs coming from my stomach. My doctor visits proved pointless. They couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me.It had been going on for four months, which told me it wasn’t going to stop until something happened. When I called my Dad three weeks ago, he told me to be ready for what this full moon had to offer. It was very cryptic, but I had a feeling I knew what he meant.

  • The Omega Best Friend    Deals

Gabbie POVWe watched as people raced to help Harlow up, but she brushed them off and yelled her lungs out. I had to give her credit, her ambition took her far. She should be proud, but I doubted that was anything she wanted to hear.Gareth basked in the glory of winning the battle. Imagined Kade up there receiving his crowning moment and then I realized the clock was ticking and I had to move.“I’ll be right back,” I told Emery.I saw Leiah first and assumed Kade would be with the other Alphas. He was. He reached me before I could get to him.“Gabbie, we need to talk.”“We do. Kade—”“Not here.” He looked over his shoulder and led me from the crowd.“What did your Father want?” He’d been gone all day.“To express his disappointment in me, but I expected that.”The cheers from the student body grew faint. We turned into the Alpha castle territory.“I’m sorry…”“Don’t be.” He stopped and looked over his shoulder again.“I should be apologising to you.” His brows dipped, and I noticed t

  • The Omega Best Friend    Time's Up

Gabbie POV“What were you thinking? You should have moved?”Dad kicked the lifeless wolf off me, and Kade helped me up.“I wasn’t thinking right, Kade.”He wrapped me in his arms despite my bloody uniform.“It’s okay, it’s over,” he said soothingly.“Kade… that’s my wolf. It’s dead.”“What? How’s that possible?” He demanded.I stared at Dad. He ripped the blade from the animal’s gut and shrugged.“I detached it.”Kade stroked my hair and led me from the scene.“This isn’t over,” Harlow snapped. “The whole school’s going to know you’re a monster!”“Can I bury her with the wolf? Please?” Dad frowned.“No, she’s right, I don’t belong here.”“But you’re part wolf on your mother’s side. That should count,” Dad said.I pointed at the dead black wolf. “That wolf’s dead.”Dad grumbled and busied himself with disposing of the wolf.We got to the door, and Kade lifted me into his arms and carried me into the castle.“Do you still want to go to the omega quarters?” He asked.“I’m good.”He kicke

  • The Omega Best Friend    Calmness after the storm

Gabbie POV“How could you both give up the most important battle of your lives… for…. for a wolf-less omega! You must be insane.” Harlow raged and paced the living room in the Alpha castle.“It wasn’t about Gabbie,” Alex said.“Yeah,” Kade grunted. He lay on the couch with his feet up, nursing his cracked ribs.“Then let us in on the secret?” Leiah scoffed.“Clearly, they were frightened of meeting me in the final and decided to give up at the last minute. Who can’t blame them?” Gareth said, reclining in a chair with a fat grin.“You’re too cocky for your own good,” Harlow spat. “You’ll eat those words when my jaws are around your neck.”Gareth smirked. “We’ll see about that, Precious.”Harlow shot the rest of us dangerous glares before storming out.“Is anyone going to spill the beans?” Leiah scowled.Kade rubbed my thigh while I stroked his hair.“No, secret. I saw an opportunity and I took it. I thought being Alpha King was all I wanted, but that changed.”All eyes turned to Alex.

  • The Omega Best Friend    In the ring

Gabbie POV“Hurry up. Light the torches as soon as you set them up,” Athena demanded.“Don’t forget the moon stones. They have to be on every corner.”“Geez, I’ve never seen Athena this agitated,” Emery hissed. She and I piled water gems from the basement into baskets while the other omegas dealt with the torches and moon stones.“Everything must be perfect!” She yelled.“It’s a big night. I feel like yelling too,” I said.We gathered the last of the water gems and rushed to the ground. I hadn’t seen Kade since this morning, or Alex since yesterday. Though an Alpha female with white hair had been prowling around. There was a chance she could face Kade if they both win their battles.“I’m sorry about your date. We worked extra hard on it,” Emery said.“I can’t believe you hid it from me!”She laughed. “It was fun to do something normal for once. The Academy… hasn’t been the same. Sometimes I think Blair made the right choice.”She stared at the basket of water gems. They were oval shap
