Seraphina's POV

I read my mother's letter three times.

Each time, the words became more disturbing.

Do not trust his mother. She was the one who chose you.

Kael stood beside me, his expression unreadable.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked.

"Because I didn't know."

"Your mother chose me for something, and you expect me to believe you knew nothing?"

"I expect you to understand that I was twelve when she died."

I looked down at the letter.

There was something else bothering me.

My mother hadn't wri

A/N: Kael is trying very hard to maintain his self-control, but I don't think his wolf is making things easy for him. 👀 And that forehead kiss? Just the beginning! But wait… was that really Seraphina's mother calling her from beneath the fortress? ❤️

Seraphina"She's not going anywhere."Kael's voice was barely recognizable. He was still on one knee, one hand pressed against his chest. His breathing was uneven, and the veins along his neck had darkened beneath his skin.I had seen him wounded before.I had watched him fight his own wolf. But this was different.Something was trying to get out."Kael?"His fingers tightened around my wrist."Get away from me."I stared at him."Absolutely not.""Seraphina." His eyes flashed gold. "I won't ask again."A violent growl escaped him.The sound made every warrior in the courtyard take a step backward.Isolde rushed toward us."Don't let him fight it!"Kael's head snapped toward her."Stay back!""Your wolf is reacting to the prison. If you kee

SeraphinaThe dagger pressed against Lucien's throat. The woman holding it wore a dark hood, but I could see the crescent pendant resting against her collarbone. My mother's pendant."Who are you?" I demanded. The woman didn't answer immediately.Instead, she tightened her grip on Lucien."Tell your soldiers to lower their weapons."Lucien's face had turned pale."Do as she says!" he snapped. One by one, the soldiers lowered their swords.Kael moved in front of me, his body tense. Even in the darkness, I could feel the violence radiating from him."Release the prince," he ordered. The woman laughed."Still giving orders, Kael Draven? Your father would be proud."His expression changed."Who are you?"She finally pulled back her hood. And I forgot how to breathe. She had my mother's eyes. Not similar eyes. Not merely the same color. The exact same golden-brown eyes, with the tiny dark fleck near the left iris. But her face was younger.Much younger. She couldn't have been more than thi

SeraphinaThe first kiss was not the beginning. It was the trigger.I read the words again, hoping they would somehow change. They didn't.A cold shiver travelled down my spine. What had happened between Kael and me? Had the covenant been waiting for us to cross some invisible line? Was our kiss really enough to awaken something beneath the fortress? And what did the First Wolf mean by the beginning?A violent crash sounded somewhere beyond the chambers.I hurried toward the door. Two guards immediately crossed their weapons."High Alpha's orders. No one leaves.""Then tell your High Alpha that his orders are ridiculous."Neither moved.I turned back, furious.I wasn't going to sit in a beautiful room while everyone else decided what happened to my life. Then the pendant around my neck grew hot.The silver crescent glowed faintly.A whisper slipped into my mind. The prince has brought something for you, little keeper.I froze.Something you lost. Before I could ask what it meant, the

SeraphinaThe second heartbeat continued beneath the fortress.Slow.Steady.And impossibly familiar.Kael was still on the floor, his fingers wrapped around mine. His eyes had returned to their usual stormy gray, but his breathing remained uneven.I couldn't stop thinking about the vision. The little boy on the altar. The silver blade. His mother's voice begging someone to spare him.And the terrible realization that the boy had been Kael."Don't let it take you with me."His words kept repeating in my head.I looked at him. "What did your father do to you?"His expression hardened."Not here.""Then where? When? How long are you planning to keep deciding which truths I'm allowed to know?""Seraphina—""No. You don't get to tell me to stay away every time something becomes uncomfortable."He rose unsteadily, refusing my offered hand. That hurt more than it should have.My mother stood a few feet away, looking between us."The prison is waking," she whispered. "We have to leave."Kael

Seraphina"She chose you to die in her son's place."For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. My mother's words echoed through the chamber, louder than the howl rising beneath our feet.Kael stood between us, his shoulders rigid, his eyes fixed on the woman who had just accused his dead mother of sacrificing me.I wanted to push past him.I wanted to run to her.I wanted to demand why she had left me with a family that hated me, why she had watched me being rejected and abandoned, why she had allowed me to grow up believing I was nothing more than an unwanted Omega. But the sight of her standing in that doorway made every question collapse into one."Did you know?" I whispered. My mother looked at me."Seraphina—""Did you know what they planned to do to me?"Her lips trembled. That was answer enough. My crescent mark burned. A drop of blood slid down my wrist and fell onto the ancient register. The pages turned by themselves. One after another.Until they stopped at a drawing of two wol

SeraphinaI woke with the taste of Kael Draven still on my lips. For several seconds, I didn't move. His arm rested around my waist, his chest warm against my back. The steady rhythm of his breathing brushed the nape of my neck. Beyond the windows, dawn had begun to stain the sky silver.I should have moved away.Instead, I pressed my fingers against my lips.I had kissed him.Not because the First Wolf had whispered something into my mind. Not because some ancient covenant had tied our bloodlines together. Not because my body was reacting to the approaching heat.I had kissed him because I wanted to.And that frightened me more than it should have.Kael shifted behind me. His arm tightened instinctively before he woke, as though even in sleep his body had decided I wasn't going anywhere. Then his eyes opened. For a moment, neither of us moved. His gaze dropped to my mouth.I felt the memory of last night return in a rush, and warmth crept up my neck.He loosened his arm immediately.I
