Chapter 2 Six Years Too Late

Author: Rowan Ashcroft
I felt dazed upon hearing his sincere words.

The pain I felt was unbearable. Yet, my mind had never been clearer.

I stared straight into his eyes and asked, "When did it start?"

His gaze flickered. "Six years ago."

Something solid deep inside me collapsed.

We had been married for 10 years, but he had spent six of them cheating on me. Yet, I hadn't noticed a thing.

Grief swallowed me whole. Details I had once brushed aside now came crashing back all at once.

Lawrence often worked late into the night, coming home exhausted. Even so, he never forgot to bring me my favorite late-night snacks.

I would sit beside him, listening to him talk about his day. I would listen to him chatter about the tiniest details and chuckle when he told me about the funny moments he'd run into.

Sometimes, I would find him texting absentmindedly when we were at a gathering with friends. I always assumed it was urgent work and even helped block drinks for him.

Now that the truth was out, I finally saw how foolish I had been.

All those nights I fell asleep alone. All those times I worried he might drink too much at business dinners. Where had he really been? And who had he been with?

Every memory I had spent married to him had to be reexamined. Every moment from the past looked completely different now that I had the full picture.

My tears poured out uncontrollably, soaking my collar. Yet, I didn't even have the strength to sob out loud.

"Why?" My voice was barely above a whisper, but he heard it clearly.

Lawrence sat beside me, head lowered.

After a long silence, he finally spoke. "Willow isn't like you. She's young and full of energy. She loves having fun, but she's willing to cook for me. When I'm tired, she finds ways to take me out and help me relax. She supports every decision I make."

As he spoke, the corners of his lips lifted slightly. He looked utterly content just then.

However, the light in his eyes dimmed when he turned his attention back on me. "Sylvia, I love you. But sometimes, I want to be loved too."

I could tell that he meant every word, and each of them were like knives to my heart.

He was the one who didn't want me to suffer, who urged me to quit my job at a major company so I could become a carefree housewife.

He was the one who felt sorry for me, who warned me again and again never to cook after I did it just once.

I had plans to travel with him, too. However, he was the one who said he didn't want to waste precious time on things that weren't his career. He claimed that he was doing it all for our future.

I obediently did everything he wanted just so he would worry less about me and get a little more rest.

So how did it all suddenly become my fault?

"Our child is very well-behaved. He could already call me 'Daddy' at eight months old. When we go on picnics, and I see them smiling…I feel like it was all worth it. Miles takes after his mom. He clings to me all day and keeps asking for kisses. Willow would lean in too, looking at me with those bright eyes…"

My heart ached with every word falling from his lips. My tears fell anew, and my chest tightened with suffocating pain.

"I don't want to hear this."

"Sylvia…"

I wanted to scream, but I couldn't even form a complete sentence.

As I saw Lawrence open his mouth again, I broke down and begged him, "Please. Stop talking."

However, he simply took my hand and explained, "No one gets to bully you. Not my family. Not even me."I cautiously glanced around, only to find them smiling indulgently as they watched us. Did love mean I could be who I truly was without fear of recompense?…Over the following decades, Evan still clung to me every single day. He w

I didn't hesitate to take advantage of the chaos to grab Evan and get us out of there.I let out a deep breath and said with relief, "Thank God, we made it out. I really didn't want to hear any more of their drama."When he didn't answer, I looked over at him in confusion.Evan had a stern look. He was barely in his early 20s. Yet, he looked like an austere and wizened professor.I laughed and teased him, but he suddenly pulled me into a tight embrace. Before long, I felt my shoulder turning damp."You have no idea how terrified I was just now," he choked out. "Thank goodness for my youth and quick reflexes. If I'd been any slower, you could've been hurt."I nearly melted into a puddle when I heard his words. Still, I patted his back, trying to calm him down. "Are you seriously using this opportunity to praise yourself right now?"Evan knew I was only saying that to ease the tension, so he played along. "Hmph. I'm just saying that now you know that I'm the only one who can prot

It wasn't until I stepped out of the hospital that I felt like I could breathe again. The stench of disinfectant had been suffocating.I asked Evan why he even gave Lawrence the time of day.The sunlight felt warm against my skin. He squinted slightly as he smiled. "I don't mind you having admirers. I'm confident that you'll still choose me even after meeting all sorts of people during your journey in life.""Someone's confident," I teased."Of course."We hadn't gone far when we noticed a crowd gathered at the hospital entrance. As we moved closer, we could hear fragments of conversation floating through the air."I heard Lawrence Ashford's wife found out he's dying and is demanding a sky-high divorce settlement from his parents.""Mr. Ashford divorced his first wife for this one. I can't help but wonder if he'd still have married his second wife if he'd known it would end like this."Willow was holding a knife to Miles' neck in the middle of the chaos, screaming hystericall

Six months later, Evan told me he loved me.He was young and vibrant, and his eyes were filled with nothing but me. So, I didn't turn him away.A failed marriage had once made me afraid of love, but the problem had never been love itself. It had been the person I was involved with.He sensed my hesitation. When he slipped a ring onto my finger, he said with quiet sincerity, "Give me time to prove it to you."Not long after, Matilda came looking for me. "Daddy!"Miles came sprinting toward us from afar, his small frame trembling with fury."You again, you terrible woman! Why do you always ruin other people's families? I'm going to hit you! I'm going to hit you!"This time, Lawrence didn't indulge him like he usually did. Instead, he yanked Miles away and shot Willow a cold look. "Control your son."Willow, who was used to being doted on, pouted. "Miles is your son, too, you know."When she received no response, she suddenly realized how ridiculous she sounded. So, she hurriedly grabbed Miles and muttered apologies toward me."I'm not saying sorry to the mistress!" Miles screamed.A sharp slap landed across his cheek. She stared at Lawrence in disbelief. Miles instantly let out a heart-wrenching wail."Sylvia, please forgive Miles. He's just a kid. What more do you want from Lawrence? He's given you his company. Isn't that enough?"Willow bowed, probably in apology. However, I stepped aside. The ruckus they were causing was

Night had fallen, but there would be no peace for me. Willow had gotten hold of my new number. Soon, my phone started ringing. The ringing got on my nerves. So, I answered without thinking."Sylvia, you and Lawrence are already divorced. Why are you still haunting him like this?"I had no idea what she was talking about. "Stop calling me. I have nothing to do with Lawrence anymore."Before I could finish, the sound of something shattering outside the window caught my attention. I walked over and looked down.Lawrence froze when he saw me. He crouched in a panic and began picking up the broken pieces of porcelain. The sharp edges sliced into his hand. I could see blood oozing out from his wounds, but he seemed numb to the pain. It was as if he couldn't feel a thing."Sylvia, don't move," he said quickly. "I'll clean it up. Don't let it cut you."When I stepped closer, the heavy smell of alcohol hit me.Lawrence's gaze traveled up from my shoes. When he realized I was there, his
