LOGINI hold back a yelp as I take my first steps away from the tree. The young man he called Parker quickly gets on my other side, helping me wrap my arm around his shoulders.
“Ready?” He asks as he wraps his arm across my back to my hip.
“Yes sir.” I confirm quietly.
“Can I ask you some questions, Alpha?”
I attempt to distract myself from the growing pain my injuries are causing me.
“Sure.” I’m relieved that he’s agreed.
“Based on the conversations I heard with your beta, you’re the alpha’s son.”
“Not much of a question but yes, I am Alpha Black’s oldest son. My name is Damian.”
I take several shallow breaths as the two of them try to match my slowed speed.
“Why are you afraid that he’s going to put a hurting on you for what you’ve done to me?”
I get straight to the point as I don’t know how long it will take for Alpha Black to get to us.
“I don’t know how he knew about your presence but he used the link to listen to what you had to say and he yelled through the link to stop my attack.”
“Your pack is rumored to be merciless. That trespassers disappear and are never heard from again. I’ve always assumed that meant that you kill them on site.”
“Honestly sir, so did I. We are trained to be merciless.”
“You’re dad has never encouraged killing anyone Day, just fight until submission.” Parker adds in when Damian falls silent.
“Well no matter what is taught, he wasn’t happy when I told him I threw you against the tree. He said that if I attacked you without provocation, without letting you explain why you were here and the attack resulted in broken bones, he will be seeing my bare ass in his office. The number of times that I will not be able to sit for three days will be determined by your injuries.”
He sighs hard as he stops. I look around me to find that the clearing of the forest is now twice what it was.
“Would you like to sit down while we wait for my dad? We have boulders placed at random intervals that we often use as chairs. Parker, do we have any water stored underground?”
“I don’t think we created any in this area.” He shakes his head.
“We may want to think about creating one if we’re going to be getting trespassers again.”
We all look up as the voice of the alpha is joined by the steady sound of the mule’s engine. He pulls up and turns perpendicular to the road about ten feet from where we stand. Damian and Parker resume their gentle push to get me walking again, unfortunately it’s not without several yelps coming out of me. It only takes a few agonizing steps to get to the two seater. Damian moves out from under me first giving me the space I need to sit before Parker backs away as well.
“Did you bring anything with you?” Alpha Black asks.
“I had a backpack with me. I think it flew off when he tumbled with me in wolf form.”
He nods before looking at the two men before me.
“Damian, you are to go back to where you first attacked him and find his backpack.”
“But dad, it’s after midnight and we have training in the morning.”
The young alpha whines.
“You attacked him unprovoked. I know we are rumored to be merciless but that's only towards those who are an obvious threat. All of you have been thoroughly trained not to initiate the aggression but to respond to it. Your training doesn’t start until ten. Shift into your wolf, use his heightened sense of smell and sight to find the pack. You will not return home until it’s found and you are expected at training on time. Your crew may help but they are not mandated to do so. I taught you better than this and this is only the beginning of a hard lesson on how you interact with trespassers. You secure them as a prisoner and report them to me. Understood?”
“Yes sir.”
His voice is clear but quiet as he steps away from the mule. Alpha Black waits until he’s certain his son is far enough away before backing up and turning away from the group. I hang on tightly as he runs the mule quickly through the woods several miles before popping out into a large area of cleared land. The beauty of his land escapes me as he increases his speed now that we’re on flat land. It's another minute or two before we pull up to the back side of the mansion. I have to blink several times in order to adjust to the bright lights common in the medical bay of the pack house.
“Good evening.”
I’m greeted by the female holding the door open as a second male, shorter than the alpha steps outside.
“Although I guess it’s not going as planned if you ended up needing emergency care.”
She finishes as the other male starts helping me out of the mule.
“There’s a wheelchair just inside the door, Pat. Day threw him into a tree so I don’t want him walking a lot until we know how much damage has been done.”
“Yes sir.”
Pat responds as I attempt to get out of the mule. My first attempt is a failure as I end up yelping and screaming in pain before I can get back on my feet after the short ride.
“Sit for a minute.” He comments with his hand on my shoulder. “Talk to me, tell me what help you need from me.”
I nod slowly as I gather a plan for standing up.
“I’m ready to try again. Step back so I’ve got space to get my feet on the ground. I need a hand or arm to grab a hold of.”
To my surprise he does both without question and with a few hard yelps, I’m back on my feet slowly walking in the back door to Crimson Dawn’s medical wing.
“I need a sling for Mrs. Helen as well as some Vicodin and a dose of Silvex.” “How much?” “Two Vicodin with the two and a half milligrams of hydrocodon to start with. If her pain level remains high then we can go up a level every four hours until we find what works. Every werewolf responds differently to both pain and pain medication. I also want two pills of the highest dose we carry of the Silvex.” “You want to start her on the binder before Vivian gets here?” Dad questions her decision. “Yes sir. The sooner we start neutralizing it so her body can get rid of it the better. If Vivian disagrees then we will change course but not knowing the length of time it takes for her to get here this is the best course of action. Unfortunately, her injuries are affecting her ability to do basic things for her children. She will need a full time nanny for a minimum of eight weeks.” “Not a problem. I have the perfect lady for the job.” Dad agrees.Jessa simply nods while Helen remains speechl
“If we can hook up an IV line to the epidural needle can we put it on a feeder?” “If you can find a way to secure it, yes over an hour. If you need to cut her skin to get to the broken needle then when you close it’s important that it’s done in a way that keeps the needle exposed but you also need to keep anything unplanned from getting in it. The needle needs to remain in her leg until I get there and have a chance to see the test results.” “Yes ma’am. When do I give the second dose of Silvex?” “That dose will go in her IV four hours after you finish the one going into her leg. I should be there by the time additional doses will be needed but if I run into any delays I will call. The other child, what does he have going on?” “I’ve drawn his blood and sent it to the lab. He received the standard IM injection into his thigh. He’s very sore and warm to the touch where the injection occurred. The skin around the injection site is discolored black and takes up the entirety of his thig
“Jessa, it’s very important that you give me an indicator that you are listening.” “Yes ma’am.” She takes several deep breaths. “It’s important for you and Demetri to understand that your difficulties with trust are to be expected. While change is slow, the council is working hard to change the perception that many alphas have on empaths. I promise, they are trying. I am Dr. Vivian Romero. I’m not just an expert in silver addition and poisoning but I’m an empath as well. My biological daughter, Daniela, and my adopted daughter, Cora, are empaths as well. I would like the opportunity to work with you, Demetri and Angela on teaching you.” She pauses a moment. “Why did you tell me that?” “I need your trust, Jessa. Just like I’m trusting you on what you feel when it comes to this infant. Do you have a name for her?” “Her name is Amber and she’ll be a year old on the twentieth.” I interrupt. “Thank you Damian.” She nods before slowly taking the phone from dad’s hand. “From what I ca
“I do believe that is the case.” Jessa nods. “Without proper treatment at the rehab center Waylen is young enough and small enough that one milligram of high silver injected into his thigh will kill him slowly over about five days. Helen, I can tell that he was more cautious with you. Your dose isn’t as high as Collin or the kids. You will still go into withdrawal and you would likely survive that withdrawal without medical intervention unless he planned on giving you multiple doses.” Helen shakes her head slowly. “But I don’t remember receiving any shots.” She states confused. “Heinrick explained in the field that he found a needle mark in your arm. Do you remember waking up not knowing what was going on or how you got to where you were?” Dad asks. She shakes her head again. “We will have to interview you further once things calm down because you have high silver in your body. It’s not as high as Waylen or Amber but it’s still there.” Jessa ends dad’s attempt to figure out why
“No, no, no. Not her. Please goddess what kind of alpha would do this.” Her voice is low as if she doesn’t want anyone else to hear. “Georgia, I need a lancet and quick silver test.” She calls out as she gently pulls the child’s arms from their sleeves. Georgia comes over quickly, setting a bin down on the bed. “Grab a second one and test the mother.” She states quickly as she tears the supplies open. “I’m sorry sweet girl.” She murmurs as she wipes the child’s middle finger with alcohol. The pup barely stirs as her finger is pricked alerting me towards the difference between her and her twin. She quickly collects several drops of blood into a thin glass tube before placing it upside down into a specialized machine. She grabs the timer sitting inside the bin brought over, a simple white egg timer, and sets it for five minutes placing it beside the miniature machine that’s analyzing the blood. “I need you to finish getting her out of the coat. Here is a gown and blanket to cover
I beg my dad for the one thing I don’t deserve. “I will ask. Right now you need to take the little one to Jessa. She needs to do a physical and a reading so they receive the proper treatment.” I nod, looking over at Helen as Dr. Pierce starts explaining something else to her. It’s at the end that she starts gently pushing Helen towards the shower. I can’t bring myself to move until she has disappeared into the bathroom. I walk slowly towards Jessa. Terrance and Waylen’s clothes have already been replaced with hospital gowns. They are crying softly but are as exhausted as their mother with no ability to fight against what they’re going through. Jessa’s voice is easily heard yet I understand nothing of what she’s saying. It’s as if my brain is shutting down from the shock of what’s in front of me. I zone out until a yelp followed by the screaming cry of a pup in pain brings me back. It only takes a second to see Derick trying to comfort a screaming Waylen. There’s a band tied around
