Wendy

I am so excited that I can hardly stand it. Not only do I get to go on a week’s vacation with Jude next week, but this week, I get to go on a mission and work directly with him and the Alpha Squad.

As I leave with my family, talk is all about how to keep Cyra and Lila safe on their pack lands. I know Yorick and Cyra were going to have a party this weekend, and all our family and their friends were invited, but now, that party will most likely be postponed.

“At least everyone was already planning to be here. I can have the kids help protect the pack boundaries while Yorick, Cyra, Connor, Quirin, and I come up with a plan to make sure the pack is secure and Cyra and Lila stay safe,” my father says as we drive.

I’m not completely sure if he’s talking to my mother, or to himself. The older I get, the more he mumbles to himself like my mother does, especially when he’s under a lot of stress like he is right now.

“Dad, Stellan doesn’t have any resources to get into the pack. As long as the patrols are doing their job and monitoring the borders, he won’t be able to get to Cyra or Lila,” I say.

“If there’s a will, there’s a way, Wendy. I thought the same thing when Simon came for your mother. He not only breached my borders once, he did it twice and killed countless pack members trying to get to her,” he says.

“You also didn’t have the security system that Hacker and Hijack installed in Yorick and Cyra’s pack, Dad. That is a secondary system that has alarms that will let them know if it senses anyone coming across the borders. It was meant to fill the gaps of the patrols. Stellan doesn’t even know about that. As long as that system stays online and the patrols are diligent, Cyra and Lila will be safe.”

A part of me wonders how Alpha Cyra feels about all of this. She’s an Alpha who fought for her position and more than Yorick, she’s leading this pack. It makes me wonder if my father and brothers will be taking her words into consideration, or if their worry for her and her safety will cause them to try and override her. Cyra may be getting her toughest challenge as an Alpha pretty soon – facing off against the Hills, Bishops, and the Harris’s when they're in protective mode. And that doesn’t include her own cousin, Alpha Arman. He’s another man who is all Alpha and obviously very protective.

I look out the window of the car. In some ways, I’m glad I won’t be around to deal with the stress and strain of what the pack will be feeling. My family can be very intense when someone they love is at risk. Having two people they love and care about at risk is making the aura in the car heavy, and that’s with me being an Alpha and my mother’s calming presence.

“Wendy, I’m going to need you to run patrols while we get things settled. I know your graduation is next weekend, but between now and then, I need you to help out,” my father says.

“Ummm,” I say, looking at my mom.

“Wendy was recruited to go with the Alpha Squad to help track Stellan and I approved her going,” my mother says calmly.

“Excuse me?” my father says, his eyes meeting mine in the rearview mirror. He knows I bypassed him for this very reason. “You’re underage,” he growls.

“Which is why I needed parental approval. This is important, Dad.”

His lips press together tightly. “Nothing is more important to me than my family.”

My mother reaches out and lays a hand on his arm. “Warren, in a couple of months, she’ll be assigned these missions, and we won’t even know about it. This way, we know that Jude will be watching out for her while she’s on assignment.”

“I will know about it when I’m sitting in my council seat, Yara.”

“And I would hope that your concern for our daughter would not cause you to restrict her ability to grow into the strong female technological wizard that she could become,” my mother says. It’s said kindly, but her words are serious. My father’s position on the council could keep me from going on missions which means I would never truly be a part of the tech team.

When my father’s gaze returns to the road, I feel Yvonne elbow me. I glance at her and she gives me a thumbs up.

When we get to Yorick and Cyra’s new packhouse, I go to the room I use when I’m here in this pack. Our family now has rooms in three different packhouses, Connor’s, Quirin’s, and Yorick and Cyra’s. Soon, my siblings will also have rooms at the Academy in the new Medical Center they are building for my mother so she can begin teaching medicine to elite students who show an interest in being doctors.

I won’t need one of those rooms because I’ll have my own, having been given early admission to the Academy. I’ll be one of only twenty students who will be admitted this year, and I’ll be on the freshman floor, even though the rest of my team will be on the floors for those who have remained at the Academy to extend their education and work for the council.

I’m excited to have Sadique, Cyra’s cousin and Zach’s new mate, as part of the freshman class as well. It will be easier for them now that Zach was accepted into the Alpha Squad. Usually, the squads move off campus, but I’m sure they will make an exception for Sadique and Zach. They did for Tracker and Raptor until they found an apartment that was in between the Academy and the squads’ main quarters in the council building.

I pack the clothes I need for the week. Raptor gave me a general idea of what I’d need, comfortable clothes in dark colors. I already set aside clothes for the week that Jude and I will go to his family’s pack. It’s a good thing because, between this mission and my graduation, I’ll barely have time to shop or pack for our trip.

Once I finish that, I join my family and offer to patrol overnight. My father only allows me to patrol for a few hours, knowing I have an early morning and potentially a long week ahead of me.

When I finally get to my room, it’s late, but I told Jude I would text him.

Me: How’s it going?

His response is instant.

Jude: Slow. They had a riot, but we’re not sure if it was staged or just a lucky break for Stellan. That’s how he got out.

Me: Are you still at the prison?

Jude: Yes. I’m thankful you aren’t here. This place is awful.

Me: It doesn’t help that you and the team put several of those individuals in there.

Jude: Nope and they all know who we are. It’s been lots of fun listening to all the horrific things these inmates want to do to me and Hijack if they ever get out.

I shudder. That sounds scary.

Me: I’m sorry you’re having to deal with that. Are you safe?

Jude: Yeah, we’re safe. It’s just … gross. There’s not really a better word for it. How are Yorick and Landon?

Me: I feel like I’ve entered Fort Knox.

Jude: Good. That means you’re safe and I like it when you’re safe.

That makes me smile.

Me: Where am I meeting you tomorrow?

Jude: Back at the Academy. I’ll see you there at eight.

Me: I can’t wait.

Jude. Me either. Sleep well and have sweet dreams.

It’s hard not to have sweet dreams when they’re all about Jude.

WendyI wake up feeling warm and safe. I snuggle into the warmth, then grunt when I feel something hard pressing into my back.“Not yet. Need more sleep,” Jude’s deep, sleepy voice says in my ear, making my entire body shiver. He pulls me closer to him, burying his face in my neck.My eyes go wide as I suddenly realize what’s pressing into my back.Jude drags his face out of my neck and looks at me. “Do you want me to get up? I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”I frown. His eyes are bloodshot and his voice is deeper than usual and not with Saggio being forward.“How much sleep did you get?” I ask.He looks at the clock. “Four hours.”It’s eight o’clock in the morning here. “You didn’t go to bed until four a.m.?” I ask.“Well, I had that call with Councilman Edward and your father, so it’s probably more like three and a half,” he says, rolling away from me and rubbing his hands over his face. “I didn’t think you’d mind me crawling into bed with you. Sorry.”“No! No, I don’t mind.

  • The Pack's Hacker   Chapter 41: Searches

JudeIt’s no surprise that Wendy’s family has rallied around her and are coming out with fists flying. No one threatens that family. You’d think that word would have spread about that as fast as word about Alpha Quirin’s vicious ferocity, but it hasn’t.When I look over, Wendy is still smiling. Making her family proud is very important to her. I understand that, it’s important to me, too. It’s just one more thing that we have in common.I open the mind link to Riley. I’m not surprised that he’s still up, but I’m sure he’s busy with his pups. It’s close to their bedtime and he, like our parents, likes to spend quiet time with his family at the end of the day. I know I’ll be the same.‘I need you to come see me in my room when you can,’ I tell him.‘Emergency?’‘No.’“Give me thirty minutes.’“Okay, so I’m done with the facial recognition at the airport, can I help you with searching the red-light district.”I look at her. This is tricky. I don’t want to treat her with kid gloves knowing

  • The Pack's Hacker   Chapter 40: Rallying the Troops

YorickI called Quirin while my father asked more questions about this assassin that's after Wendy.“Yorick, it’s the middle of the night. You’re lucky I’ve already worn your sister out or I wouldn’t be answering.”“If is wasn’t important, I wouldn’t be calling. Arden hired an assassin to kill Wendy.”His snarl cuts off and I hear him getting up.“I’m going to need more information,” he growls softly. “Go back to sleep, baby. You’re carrying my pups and you need rest,” he says gently to Kennedy. He’s quiet while he pulls on some clothes and steps out of their room.“She’ll want to know,” I tell him.“I’ll tell her in the morning,” he says. “Now, tell me what’s going on. How did you get this information?”I tell him what I know, then put him on speaker so he can participate in the call.“Do we have a name?” Quirin growls.“Khaled Dagher,” Hacker says.“Fucking asshole. He’s a rogue. I refused to let him into my pack. He’s violent and coming from me, that’s saying something. He went to j

Wendy“Well, there’s nothing ominous about that,” I say, seeing the serious look on Jude’s face.“First, I want you to understand I wasn’t keeping things from you. Well, I was, but it’s because I wanted to understand what was going on and to have some answers for you before I told you. Second, I need you to stay calm for me, okay.”My heartrate increases and he turns his chair to face me.“I won’t let anything happen to you. Neither will Hijack or Tracker, and don’t get me started on your family,” he says.“This is about Stellan, isn’t it?” I ask quietly. I knew he focused on me in the packhouse. He’d looked at me like he wanted to kill me.“Partly, but it’s bigger than that and that’s what I’ve been trying to understand. Everything that has happened has pushed aside our ability to get these answers, which is why it has taking this long for me to get you some answers.”“Okay, what answers do you have for me?” I say as he takes my hands in his.He holds my gaze as he tells me.“Arden, L

  • The Pack's Hacker   Chapter 38: Arden

Jude“Are you really going to work tonight, Wendy?” Isobel asks.“Yes. This is important. We’ve had so many elite team members injured, they need all hands on deck. Even though I’m not officially part of the team, I can at least help.”“You are part of the team. Ask any of us,” I say, as we finish eating. “We’ll probably be busy the rest of the night. We’ll see you in the morning,” I say, standing when we’re done and pulling Wendy’s chair out for her.I take her hand as she says goodnight to my family then we walk upstairs together.“I’ll leave my door open. Come see me when you’re done talking to your mom.”“Okay,” she says. I kiss her quickly then head to my room, leaving my door cracked. I put my earbuds in and begin going through the video that Tracker tagged me in.While it rewinds to the place I want to start watching, I reach out to Tracker via messenger.Me: Are you working tonight?Tracker: Yes, a little, why?Me: I need you to keep Sphinx busy while I work on this Arden issue

  • The Pack's Hacker   Chapter 37: Saggio's Confirmation

JudeWendy fits in with my family like she was always meant to be here. I’ll be heartbroken if she isn’t my mate and honestly, I think my family will be too. They’ve already fallen in love with her, just like I have.I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me that Wendy in a bathing suit would be different than her workout clothes. I’ve seen her in a sports bra and spandex shorts. But this? Oh. My. Goddess. I couldn’t stop Saggio’s possessive growl and I didn’t even try.My family had given me a bunch of shit when we got out to the surf, but I didn’t care. If Saggio and Dasha don’t proclaim each other as mates on her eighteenth birthday, I might just have to convince her to accept me as her chosen mate.‘I would be okay with that,’ Saggio says. That’s all the confirmation I need. After an amazing day at the beach, we head home. Wendy rested her head against my shoulder and fell asleep on the drive. I’m not surprised. The sun takes a lot out of you, and she’s not used to being on the beach
