Jasmine's pov
“Oh my God, I'm so sorry! My hand slipped.” I apologized hysterically, trying to wipe the water I had accidentally splashed on my mother-in-law. “It wasn't intentional.”
“You stupid woman!” Samantha yelled as she shot up from her bed. “Of course it was intentional! You've always wanted to do this, to show me how you've always hated me.”
Her words, like a knife, stabbed me to my core because that's not true. I love her like I loved my mother. I have always loved her.
“You know that's not true. That was…”
“A mistake?” She cut me off with a raised brow. “So, you're saying that I'm lying?”
“No, no. That's not what I'm saying.” I swallowed, lowering my head. “I'm sorry. I was indeed stupid. Forgive me.” I picked up the glass of water from the table again and gave it to her. “Here, you need to take your medicine.”
Samantha sighed dramatically and sat back down like I was in the wrong before taking her drugs.
I heaved out a sigh of relief. At least, she took it. If it meant becoming a doormat to be trampled upon for her to like me and see me as her daughter, then I'm willing. She's been diagnosed with diabetes and I've always tried my best to buy her the medications even though they cost a lot.
She looked at me again and her face turned into a mixture of disbelief and anger. “And what are you doing still standing there? Get the hell out of my room!”
I flinched from the intensity of her voice. I thought I'd have been used to it by now, but I wasn't. “If that's all mother, then I'll be in the dining room.”
I descended the last flight of stairs and the sight in the dining area made my heart ache with disappointment. The long table filled with the feast I had spent the entire day preparing.
Exactly two years ago today, I said yes to Enoch Smith at the very altar where everything changed in a single, startling moment. What began as a sudden choice born of circumstance has since then, became the best thing that had ever happened to me.
But as I looked at the food that had now turned cold and tasteless, the reality hit me like a punch, hollowing my chest until it ached.
Fishing out my phone, I dialed Enoch's number with trembling fingers as I sank into the chair.
Switched off.
Like a blade, the automated voice cut through the silence, the tiny hope I've been clinging to crumbled into a quiet suffocating despair. My hands drifted to my still flat stomach, instinctively rubbing the tiny life growing inside me—our baby.
As one of the many secrets I wanted to share tonight, the dinner, along with my anticipation and every precious feeling, was tipped into the trash.
“Maybe he was busy,” I said. "I will just have to look for another wonderful moment to tell him.” But even as I said that, I just couldn't make myself believe it.

“Goodness, you look awful today sis, what the fuck happened to you?” Derek, my younger brother exclaimed, angry.
“It's nothing,” I lied smoothly. “I just want to visit the hospital today.”
His eyes widened and his shoulders tensed. “Are you alright? Did something happen?” He asked, holding me by the shoulders and examining me.
His actions were so fierce but careful that I laughed out loud. “Oh my, you're so cute when you're like this,” I joked, pinching his cheeks.
Derek rolled his eyes. “Can you be serious sis? How can you be joking in moments like this? And why did you call me over when you have your own car?”
“Um, it broke down yesterday when I went to get groceries. So,” I shrugged, praying for him to believe me.
Truth is, Enoch uses my car. He just launched his tech company and he needed mobility if he needed to succeed. But Derek didn't have to know.
“I wanted to be sure of it first, but I'm one month pregnant.”
Derek closed the distance and wrapped me in an embrace so fierce it nearly stole my breath. “So, I'm going to be an uncle?”
I could hear the excitement in his voice. “Yes, you are. So let's go.”
He broke the hug with a confused expression. “But your husband should be the one taking you to the hospital, where is he by the way?”
“Well, he doesn't know about it yet. I intended to tell him yesterday, but…” My eyes drooped into a melancholic gloom, weighted by a quiet sorrow at the thought. “he didn't come home.”
And then, after a sleepless night of tossing and turning, I ended up upsetting my baby.
“That ingrate!” Derek seethed, understanding dawning in his eyes. “I told you he didn't like you. If not because of what happened at the church altar, I don't think he would have spared you a glance and now, look at how thin and unkempt you've become.”
“No, you don't understand.” I quickly said defensively. “His tech company just launched and it's taking a lot of his time. It's… it's not his fault.”
“It’s not his fault?! Did he know you're an Ives and that you invested so much in that company?”
“Hey, Derek!” I whispered, looking to my right and left. “Quiet, or people will hear you. You know how it is. I don't want him to feel inadequate when he learns of my identity as an Ives Heiress. I'll reveal my identity to him after his company's official opening.”
Derek grinded his teeth, but agreed reluctantly. “Okay. But you have to be quick about it.”

“Mrs Smith, your baby is fine. You just need to rest and take the medicine I've prescribed for you.” The nurse informed me, and I nodded, relief washing over me.
“Thank you doctor. I really appreciate this.” I said standing up.
“You're going to be fine. Tell the next patient to come over as you walk out, please?”
“Alright.” I picked up a bulletin for pregys on my way out. If I didn't want to lose this baby too, like I did the last one, then I'll need all the guidance I could get.
I opened the first page and took a glance. But paused when I was almost descending the stairs. I had forgotten to inform the next patient.
I turned around but the couples were already walking towards the doctors office. But that is not what made my heart skip a beat.
That silhouette…
Jasmine's Pov The deafening bass of the blaring music slowly faded into a slow, soft song that hummed beneath my ribs, but it did nothing to calm the storm brewing in my heart. Because the dead rose was still in my palm, its petals dried and wilted like something that had already given up. And that tag… that damn message on the tag that read: “I've been watching you rebuild. It would be a shame… to break you again. Just like the rose in your hand, they die when crushed, and you, Jasmine, would be like that rose.Soon.”It shouldn't have, but a cold shiver crawled up my spine, just as a voice brushed the back of my neck. I took a deep breath to steady myself and couldn't help but wonder why today had to be weird. The voice was low, unhurried, and all too familiar. “Seems someone finally received the package I sent… after so many rejections.”For a heartbeat, every muscle in my back locked and recognition punched through me so fast I forgot how to breathe.Lowering himself, he to
Enoch’s pov“You're not the one who usually answers the door. But are you Mrs Smith?” he asked in a clipped professional tone, glancing down at the name maybe to check if he asked right. “Yes, I am.”“Good. Your order has arrived. I'll need payment and your signature to complete delivery.”Payment?I straightened immediately, tension crawling up my spine. Thinking about it now, I've not really paid attention to my mom's health, all thanks to Jasmine. I'd been so busy with starting my own company that I let her handle almost everything. “It's fine. I'll handle it,” I said, moving towards them. The man's eyes narrowed. “And you are—?”“Oh, he's my son,” my mother replied proudly. His stance eased, and he handed me the clipboard. “Then, that's even better. In that case, sign here… and here. Total is listed at the top.”I frowned, thinking why he said it's better I was the one… but that's not what I need to start thinking right now. I barely glanced down, and the numbers slapped me ha
Enoch's Pov:“Mom, how many times do I have to tell you I can't go out because I don't have a fucking car?!” I thundered down the stairs, dragging frustrated fingers through my hair. Every step felt like it was grinding against the last nerve I had left. Why was this so damn hard for her to understand? Maybe I'd consider sleeping at the office from now on. Mother followed behind me, voice raised in that shrill, dramatic pitch she used whenever things weren't going her way. “Then get another one already! Even a better one to spite that Jasmine bitch! Moreover, I have the women's meeting event coming up soon and I can't afford to be seen flagging down a taxi!”I spun around so fast she nearly walked into me. My jaws clenched. “Mom… I'm trying, okay?” I hissed, half whisper, half shout, hoping maybe lowering my tone would finally drill the truth into her head. “But it just seems like the auto stands in the whole city of San Francisco suddenly increased their prices. But I'll keep tr
Jasmine's Pov I pushed open the boardroom doors and nearly collided with Derek. Of course he was standing there, leaning casually against the wall like he was posing for a luxury cologne ad. Handsome and impeccable as always, he looked nothing short of a model straight out of a magazine. Tall, sharp-jawed and annoyingly perfect. But I still rolled my eyes at him. Hard. “Took you long enough,” I huffed, brushing past him. “So much for a short call.”He pushed himself off of the wall, guilt flickering across his stupidly handsome face. “I'm sorry, sis. Really. Something important came up.”“Oh?” I shot back. “More important than your sister who just returned to save the kingdom after two years?”“That's not fair,” he protested softly. “It wasn't more important than you… it was my girlfriend.”I didn't make it three steps before my curiosity yanked me right back around. “Hold on.” I folded my arms. “Girlfriend? Since when?”Derek winced… winced like a man caught in a lie he never int
Jasmine's Pov “Argent Dynamics,” I repeated, my brow arching up. “Samuel Argent specifically asked to see me?” She nodded crisply. “Yes, ma'am. He's been…rather persistent.”Rhea’s words, spoken so professionally, made my pulse stutter. What's it, three years already? The thought of seeing him again made something cold crawl up my spine. I couldn't… no. I wouldn't let him face me. Not yet. “Then handle it yourself, like you always do,” I ordered, keeping my tone even. “I tried to ma'am,” she continued hesitantly, her eyes raising up to meet mine. “But he said it was a matter of mutual interest… and that the discussion should be with you. Directly.”The way she said ‘directly’ made my breath hitch. A slow breath escaped me as I leaned back in my chair, forcing composure over the storm building inside. Of course he wouldn't let go that easily. He never did. If he was persistent, then I was going to meet him anyway. “Schedule a meeting with him tomorrow evening.” Whatever I felt at
Jasmine's Pov Derek placed his long index finger on the start button and the car came to life. He handed me an uncapped bottle of water, and then pressed on the accelerator. Putting on my safety belt, I took a sip before going through one of the many documents that I needed to go through. “So what's your call? Should I just start pulling out our collaboration with Star Tech company?” Derek asked before focusing his gaze on the road. The expression on my face scrunched up in mock confusion. “Sorry, remind me what Star Tech is again?” Derek briefly glanced at me with a confused gaze. “Um, Enoch's startup tech company?” “Ohhhh,” I dramatically gasped, acting like I just recalled what it was, and who owned it as if I had no prior knowledge about it before, and honestly, that's what it seems now. If Enoch could go low, then I could go even lower than he did. Derek frowned. “You're not acting like the sister I used to know,” and then chuckled. “What's with this new high?”I rolled m
