Chapter 1

Keisha stared at me, completely unmoved by my reaction, and suddenly seemed to deflate.

"Are you trying to hurt me? Or are you hurting yourself?"

Hurting? I wasn't trying to hurt anyone. I was just being the prince consort she always wanted.

"Isn't this good?"

"What's good about it? You finally came back. Stop saying these hurtful things. Can't the three of us just live together like a real family?"

"Fine."

I answered so easily that the light in her eyes dimmed even more.

Just then, a servant's voice came from outside the door.

"Your Highness, the three gentlemen have arrived."

I broke into a smile. "Please, bring them in. These three gentlemen are the best I could find. I guarantee you will be pleased, Princess."

Before Keisha could respond, I stood up and welcomed them inside.

When the three men entered, Keisha froze. Her eyes went wide.

Because each of them carried a trace of her adopted brother, Gregory Maynard. One had his eyes. Another had his build. The third had his nose and jawline.

I thought, since Keisha had loved Gregory so much, bringing these men into her household would please her. It would certainly help expand the household's lineage.

The three men bowed in unison. The first to lose his composure was our son, Thomas.

He hurried to my side and looked up at me.

"Father, since you agreed we should be a real family, send them away. Mother won't like them. I don't like them either."

"Don't be ridiculous. How can such a grand estate have no one to attend to your mother by her side? Don't make a scene and embarrass us in front of others."

Thomas tried to say more, but I ignored him. I brushed his hand aside and pushed him away.

"Princess, do you like them? Should they attend to you tonight?"

Keisha didn't answer. Her eyes red, she stepped forward and suddenly grabbed my arm.

"After you left, I knew I was wrong. I already sent Gregory away. Why do you have to keep bringing this up over and over? Are you trying to remind me what a huge mistake I made? Or how badly I wronged you?"

"You're overthinking things, Princess. The estate only has Thomas as an heir. That's not fitting for a family of our status. I'm only doing this to—"

"Enough!" she cut me off sharply.

She grabbed me with so much force that she shoved me to the ground.

I threw my hands out to catch myself, and one of them landed directly on a broken vase that Keisha had smashed earlier. Blood immediately began to flow.

Keisha froze. Panic flooded her eyes.

"Sebastian—"

She bent down to help me, but I subtly pulled away. I braced myself on a servant who had rushed over and stood up on my own.

That flinch—that small withdrawal—made something dark rise in her eyes.

"Do you really hate my touch that much?"

Keisha sat there until the next day, when a servant finally dared to approach."Princess, Villa Rosa has been restored. Would you like to see it?""Yes. Of course I would."She carried Sebastian's body back herself, joyfully, and laid him on the bed. Then she turned around—and couldn't smile anymore.Everything that had once sat on the shelves—every token of love between her and Sebastian—was gone. She had burned it all in that fire. Not a single piece of clothing remained. She had nothing left to remember him by.The old panic flooded back. Then she remembered the back courtyard. The place where Sebastian had spent those last few days. She ordered the servants to tend to the body and ran. When she stepped into the back courtyard, the first thing she saw were clothes hanging on a line. She grabbed them like a starving person grabbing food. She carried them inside and held them to her chest. Two blankets. A couple changes of clothes. Nothing else.On the table sat the slop

  • The Perfect Prince Consort   Chapter 7

Keisha wanted to be alone with Sebastian, just to talk to him quietly. But Gregory burst through the door, soaking wet and wild with fear. He threw himself at the foot of the bed and grabbed the hem of Keisha's robe."Keisha… Keisha, please help me! Thomas has lost his mind—he's trying to kill me! I'm practically his uncle. You can't just stand by and let him commit murder, can you?""Get out."Keisha's voice was barely above a whisper, but it was cold enough to freeze blood.Gregory froze. "What… what did you say? Thomas is trying to kill me! Aren't you going to do something?""Disturb Sebastian again, and I'll kill you myself."Something in her eyes—in her voice—made Gregory stumble backward. He nearly fell.Just then, Thomas burst into the room with servants behind him."Seize him!""Thomas! I am your uncle! You can't just decide to drown me!""Shut up! I only had one father, and your twisted idea killed him! This is all your fault!"Gregory scrambled backward, pure terr

  • The Perfect Prince Consort   Chapter 6

Thomas couldn't hear a single word. He just wailed—he was only ten years old, after all.Gregory looked confused. He pulled Thomas into his arms to comfort him. "What's going on? Who died?"The moment the words left his mouth, Gregory was shoved to the ground with brutal force.Thomas climbed on top of him like a wild animal, fists flying."This is your fault! ALL OF THIS IS YOUR FAULT!"If you hadn't suggested using my sister's bones to force Father to give in, he wouldn't have collapsed! He finally came back, and now you've taken him from me!"Thomas was a child, but he was big for his age. A few solid punches landed, and Gregory went limp—knocked unconscious. Servants carried him away.Still crying, Thomas tried to approach the pavilion where Sebastian's body lay. Keisha kicked him again."I told you he's not dead! Do you not understand me?!"Go! Round up every doctor in the capital and drag them here! Anyone who says Sebastian is dead will be buried with him!"She had Seb

"Sebastian… SEBASTIAN!"Keisha ignored the wound on her collarbone. She ran to Sebastian as fast as she could and caught his body before it hit the ground. She didn't seem to feel any pain."Sebastian, stop pretending. Get up!"Sebastian didn't respond. There was still a faint smile at the corner of his mouth. Blood foam dripped down his chin and onto the back of her hand. It burned so hot it made her whole body tremble."Sebastian?"She shook him. She called his name over and over. No response.Something cracked in her eyes. Panic flooded in like a rising tide."Get the doctor! GO!"A servant ran off.Thomas rushed over. His face was pale. His voice came out wrong—high and broken."Mother… what's wrong with Father?"Keisha acted like she hadn't heard. She didn't answer. She just kept wiping the blood from Sebastian's mouth with trembling hands."Why is he coughing up blood?" she whispered. "Why? Why is he coughing up blood?"The courtyard fell silent except for the crackl

Keisha's face turned purple. She nodded sharply. "Fine. Burn all of it right here. I don't want Gregory to have to look at any of it."I didn't respond. I stepped past them and kept walking. But Thomas blocked my way. "Father, if you keep fighting with Mother, I'll burn all my books and enlist in the military tomorrow."He had used these threats on me more than once.In the past, I would have gently explained that surviving in the army requires more than brute strength—it takes strategy, intelligence, and careful planning. I would have broken it all down for him and guided him. Now, I was just tired. Even speaking a single word to him felt exhausting."Do whatever you want."The moment I stepped into the back courtyard, the old wooden door locked behind me."The Princess says you are to stay here and reflect on your mistakes. You are not allowed out."I didn't answer.Within ten days, the meals became fewer and fewer. Sometimes no one came at all.She was waiting for me to b

I made some tonic and brought it to her. That's when I overheard Keisha giving instructions to a servant. She was telling the servant to send Gregory out of the capital ahead of everyone else. Find him somewhere to stay. And give him plenty of money. She didn't want him to go without. From her orders, I also learned that their affair had been going on for at least ten years. Keisha had hidden it well.I threw the bowl away. I went to bury what would have been our child. When Keisha found me, I asked for a divorce. My terms were simple: I would take our son, Thomas, and nothing else. But then Thomas—who had just been in my arms, asking if I was okay—pulled his hand out of mine."Father, you want to divorce Mother over something this small?"Mother is a princess.
