CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

last update Last Updated: 2025-08-24 08:21:25

Natalie kicked off her heels the moment she stepped into her apartment. The day had been a rollercoaster of emotions, but overall, she felt victorious. She walked straight to her kitchen and pulled out a bottle of red wine from the cabinet.

The cork popped with a satisfying sound as she opened it. She poured herself a generous glass, the deep red liquid catching the light from her kitchen window. This called for a celebration.

"To progress," she whispered to herself, raising the glass.

She took a long sip, savoring the rich taste. Everything was falling into place better than she had hoped. Rafael was choosing her over Isabella for important business deals. Isabella was clearly rattled and losing her grip on Rafael's attention. And most importantly, she had planted the first seed of doubt in Rafael's mind about her true identity.

The slip about the Amalfi Coast penthouse had been risky, but it was worth it. She could still see the shock in Rafael's eyes, the way his face had gone pale when she mentioned it. He was starting to question things, starting to wonder. That was exactly what she wanted.

Natalie moved to her living room and settled onto the couch, wine glass in hand. She thought about Isabella's angry expression in the hallway. The woman was losing control, and it showed. Soon, Isabella would make a mistake. They always did when they felt threatened.

She took another sip of wine and smiled. Revenge was sweeter than she had imagined.

Her phone rang around nine-thirty that evening. Rafael's name appeared on the screen, and her pulse quickened. She let it ring twice before answering, not wanting to seem too eager.

"Hello?"

"Natalie, it's Rafael. I hope I'm not calling too late."

His voice sounded tired, but there was something else in it. Concern, maybe. "Not at all. I was just relaxing after today's meeting."

"Good. I wanted to check if you made it home safely. I should have called earlier, but I got caught up in back-to-back meetings that ran longer than expected."

Natalie felt a flutter of satisfaction. He was checking on her, showing concern for her wellbeing. Another small victory. "That's very thoughtful of you. Yes, I'm home safe. Thank you for asking."

"I'm glad to hear that. How are you feeling about the G and O project? Any initial thoughts after our discussion?"

She set her wine glass on the coffee table and leaned back against the couch cushions. "I'm excited about it, honestly. It's exactly the kind of challenge I've been hoping for."

"That's what I like to hear. Your enthusiasm is refreshing."

"I've already started sketching out some preliminary ideas for the client presentation. I think we can offer them something really innovative."

Rafael's voice warmed slightly. "I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Your perspective on things is always interesting."

"Thank you. That means a lot coming from you."

There was a brief pause before Rafael continued. "I have to admit, I'm impressed by how quickly you've adapted to our company culture. Not everyone fits in so seamlessly."

Natalie chose her words carefully. "I've always believed in immersing myself completely in whatever I'm doing. When I commit to something, I give it everything I have."

"That's evident in your work. It's one of the reasons I wanted you on this project."

"I won't let you down, Rafael. I promise you that."

Another pause, longer this time. Natalie could almost hear him thinking on the other end of the line.

"So, the trip," Rafael began, after a while.

"Of course. Now, speaking of the trip, I think we should plan for at least five days at each client location. Does that work with your schedule?"

"Absolutely. I'll make whatever arrangements necessary."

"Excellent. I'll have my assistant coordinate the hotel bookings and travel arrangements."

They spent the next few minutes discussing logistics and timeline details. Rafael's voice gradually relaxed as they focused on business matters, but Natalie could still sense an underlying tension. He was still thinking about the penthouse comment, still trying to piece together how she could know about it.

"I should let you get some rest," Rafael said eventually. "Tomorrow will be another busy day."

"Yes, I want to be fresh for reviewing all those project files you're sending over."

"They should be in your inbox first thing in the morning. Take your time going through them, but let me know if you have any questions."

"I will. And Rafael?"

"Yes?"

"Thank you for trusting me with this opportunity. I know it's a big project, and I appreciate your confidence in me."

"You've earned it, Natalie. Your work speaks for itself."

"That's very kind of you to say. Have a good evening."

"You too. Goodnight."

"Goodnight."

Natalie ended the call and immediately reached for her wine glass again. The conversation had gone better than she expected. Rafael was still suspicious about the penthouse comment, but he wasn't pushing too hard. Yet.

She took a long sip of wine and smiled. The call had revealed something important – Rafael cared enough to check on her safety, to make sure she got home okay. That kind of concern meant he was getting attached to her, whether he realized it or not.

Perfect.

She thought about his voice when he asked about the penthouse. There had been confusion there, but also something deeper. Pain, maybe. The mention of that place had triggered memories of Alina, she was certain of it.

Good. Let him remember. Let him think about the woman he had loved and lost. Let him wonder why this new woman in his life seemed to know things she shouldn't know.

Natalie finished her wine and headed to her bedroom. Tomorrow would bring new opportunities to get closer to Rafael, to learn more of his secrets, to position herself deeper in his life.

And eventually, when the time was right, she would reveal the truth. She would watch his face when he realized that the woman he had betrayed, the woman he had helped murder, was standing right in front of him.

The thought sent a shiver of anticipation through her. Soon, Rafael Volkov would understand exactly what it meant to face the consequences of his actions.

But for now, she would continue playing her part. She would be the perfect employee, the trustworthy business partner, the woman who made him feel comfortable and safe.

Right up until the moment she destroyed him.

Natalie changed into her nightgown and slipped into bed, her mind already planning the next phase of her revenge. Tomorrow couldn't come soon enough.

Afterward, they lay tangled together, listening to the storm rage outside. Rafael's fingers traced lazy patterns on her bare shoulder, and Natalia felt a contentment she hadn't experienced since before her death."Regrets?" Rafael asked quietly."No," she said, and realized she meant it. "You?""Only that it took us this long to get here."She wanted to tell him it had taken longer than he knew. That they'd been here before, in another life, in another version of themselves. Instead, she pressed closer to his warmth and tried not to think about what would happen when morning came."The storm's moving off," Rafael observed, nodding toward the window where the lightning had become more distant."Good. I should probably get back to my room soon.""Should you?" His arm tightened around her. "Or you could stay here. With me."The temptation was overwhelming. To spend the entire night in his arms, to wake up beside him instead of finding another cruel note dismissing their connection. But s

Rafael's bedroom was cast in shadows and intermittent flashes of lightning, the storm outside providing a dramatic soundtrack to the moment that would change everything between them. Natalia stood beside his bed, suddenly aware of how momentous this decision was—not just for her revenge plot, but for the woman she was becoming."Second thoughts?" Rafael asked softly, his hands resting gently on her waist."Always," she admitted. "But not about this."He kissed her then, slow and thorough, as if they had all the time in the world instead of stealing moments between thunderclaps. His hands were reverent as they traced the lines of her body, and Natalia found herself remembering a different version of this scene—a different lifetime when she'd given herself to this man completely, holding nothing back. That woman had been destroyed by her trust. This woman knew better. But as Rafael's lips moved to her throat, as his hands whispered across her skin with familiar expertise, Natalia felt h

The morning air in Florence was crisp with the promise of autumn, but Natalia barely noticed as she stepped out of the car at the Palazzo Medici. The business meeting had been scheduled weeks ago—a negotiation with a consortium of Florentine investors about a new luxury hotel project—but the timing couldn't have been more perfect.Or more torturous.Rafael stood near the palazzo's entrance, speaking in rapid Italian with their local contact. He looked impeccably professional in his charcoal suit, every inch the successful businessman. When he glanced over and saw her approaching, his expression didn't change, but she caught the slight tightening around his eyes.Three days had passed since he'd left that devastating note in her kitchen. Three days of careful professional courtesy whenever their paths crossed at the office. Three days of pretending that nothing had happened between them, that she hadn't fallen asleep in his arms while he whispered promises about keeping her safe.Three

Something shifted in his expression—surprise, maybe, or relief. "Are you sure?""I'm sure."He settled back against the pillows, pulling her closer until she was curled against his side, her head on his chest. She could feel his heartbeat beneath her cheek, steady and reassuring."Natalie?""Mmm?""This doesn't change anything at the office. Tomorrow, we go back to being professional.""I know.""And it doesn't mean... I'm not making you any promises I might not be able to keep.""I know that too.""Then why?"She was quiet for a long moment, considering her answer. When she spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper."Because sometimes, we all need someone to hold us while the storm passes."He pressed a kiss to the top of her head, his arms tightening around her."Yeah," he said quietly. "Sometimes we do."They fell asleep like that, wrapped around each other while the rain continued to fall outside. And for the first time since her rebirth, Natalia's dreams were peaceful.

  • The Phoenix's Rebirth and Revenge   CHAPTER FORTY-THREE: DANGEROUS GROUNDS

The storm had been building all day, dark clouds gathering over Milan like a bruise spreading across the sky. By evening, the first drops of rain were spattering against the windows of the De Luca penthouse, and Natalia found herself pacing restlessly from room to room, unable to settle. It had been three days since her confrontation with Rafael in the conference room. Three days of carefully orchestrated encounters and strategic positioning. Three days of watching Isabella scramble to contain the damage from the Venetian project debacle while pretending she wasn't increasingly desperate. And three days of Rafael avoiding her entirely. He'd been in Rome on business, according to his assistant. An unexpected trip that had come up suddenly and would keep him away for the rest of the week. But Natalia knew better. He was running from what had happened between them, from the admission that kissing her had felt like coming home. The thought should have filled her with satisfaction. Instead

  • The Phoenix's Rebirth and Revenge   CHAPTER FORTY-TWO: STRATEGIC WOUNDS

The morning sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Rafael's office, but it did nothing to warm the ice that had settled in Natalia's chest. She stood in the reception area, watching Isabella deliver the news that should have been hers to give."I've assigned Marcus to oversee the Venetian project," Isabella was saying, her voice carrying that particular tone of false regret that grated against Natalia's nerves. "I know you were looking forward to it, but given your... limited experience with our specific protocols..."Natalia forced her expression to remain neutral, though her fingers tightened around her leather portfolio. The Venetian project was a massive undertaking—the renovation of a historic palazzo into luxury condominiums, with enough legitimate and illegitimate moving parts to keep her busy for months. It was exactly the kind of high-profile assignment that would cement her position in Rafael's inner circle. And now it was being handed to Marcus Torretti, a mid
