Ashley jerked her head as she almost thought what she just heard was wrong.

“I had no intention of refusing this marriage plan from the start.”

“Wait,” Ashley felt her throat become very bitter and dry instantly, “You want to do this marriage?”

“Yes” Josh then split the crab stuffed mushroom on his plate into two small pieces and ate it. Ignoring Ashley's gaze who was still stunned by his answer just now.

"Why? We don't know each other that well. Haven't seen each other in a very long time. I'm also sure you don't like me."

"We can take things slowly. And I think our history is more than enough to start a relationship. There have been no fights or problems between us as long as I can remember, right?"

Josh was wrong. The man was lying as if Ashley didn't know about an incident in the past that could pretty well illustrate how cold Josh felt towards her. And that created a big problem for Ashley having to bear the pain alone.

Ashley sank into her confusion again, then mumbled without fully realizing it. “They must have given you a lot of benefits that you couldn't resist.”

Josh put down his spoon and picked up a napkin to wipe his lips. "Well, of course there are some. It's an arranged marriage. Our parents obviously did it because there's mutualism there. But I guess you don't really know since you've been abroad for so long," Josh tried to keep his pride remain high after the girl mentioned benefits. "Hana New Town is about to start massive construction. Your family needs my father to win all the tenders. The trouble your aunt made seems to have cost the company a lot of money. Plus the scandals of some of your cousins..." Josh paused briefly while glancing at Ashley.

Ashley's expression had clearly changed. It amused Josh that he was now one step ahead of her.

"You must not have heard about this. Why? Because my family's law-firm handled it well without leaking to the media."

Ashley lowered her head and fell silent. A new whirlwind of thoughts filled her more intensely.

She knew that all arranged marriages had something in exchange. But hearing it spelled out directly like just now, made her feel like she was really being sold by her parents.

"Eat. You should fill your stomach. We'll talk about it later after eating."

Her idea of rejecting this marriage now seemed like nonsense. Inevitably, Ashley had to stop her unrealizable wish, and follow her parents' wishes.

The conversation they had afterward didn't go anywhere either. The threats made by her parents could not make Ashley rebel. And Josh also probably had his own reasons why he didn't plan to refuse—although all she knew so far his concern was about business matters and political power between their families.

Other than that, Josh mostly asked her about herself—her daily life, the things she had been doing in Auckland, and the things she wanted to do to cure her longing for this place.

He didn't mention marriage at all. As if it didn't require any discussion. As if it was a given that it would definitely happen.

Until at the end of their meeting that night, maybe Josh wanted to emphasize something to Ashley.

“Ash,” Josh looked at her with a calm but earnest gaze, "I didn't do it just for the money. When I found out the girl they were referring to was you, my worries disappeared. I guess it wouldn't hurt if we both gave it a try."

Ashley only glanced at Josh briefly as he spoke. Instead of answering, she just threw a smile in response.

Her hand reached out to grab the wine glass and sipped the liquid slowly. Savoring the sensation on her tongue to get rid of the bitterness that she was constantly tasting today.

She had nothing to say about what Josh had just said. She couldn't translate or glean anything from his gaze or his words. His demeanor was too calm. It made it almost impossible to guess what was in his head.

When Ashley and Mrs. Go walked into the house, Mrs. Gu—the head assistant in that house—was already waiting for them in the foyer.

“Madam and Master are waiting for you in the study, Miss.”

Ashley let out a long breath. "I just want to rest. But I even can't get that simple thing,“ then glanced at Mrs. Go beside her, ”Can you get the documents from my room?"

Mrs. Go nodded. “I'll get it for you.”

Ashley then followed Mrs. Gu who had already walked over and informed her parents of her arrival.

Then she entered and sat down with her head bowed. While her parents greeted her with a glare that she could feel sinking into her bones.

“You haven't been here for a day but you're already trying to cause trouble.”

Her father opened the conversation after a silence fell over the three of them. And it was her father's voice that she heard again for the first time in seven years.

Ashley didn't know what kind of trouble she was trying to cause, because her meeting with Josh was going better than she thought, and if what her father meant was that she hadn't given her consent yet... it didn't seem like a problem. Since her parents already knew whether she was willing or not, Ashley still had to agree to it.

"I don't understand what you mean. I didn't do anything," Ashley said in a low voice, and chose to pretend to be stupid and ignorant.

Her father's eyes almost widened when he heard Ashley's words.

"I told your mom to give me the document you signed, but I heard that you haven't signed it yet. You want to make me angry?!"

Ashley looked down while swallowing her saliva. Her father's yelling always managed to make her shudder in fear.

Just then, there was a knock on the door. And Mrs. Go walked in carrying a folder whose contents were the headline of everyone's commotion in the room.

“I brought Mrs. Ashley's documents,” Mrs. Go placed it carefully on the table and intended to leave afterwards.

But Ashley's father had already thrown a question first and looked at the woman, “How was their dinner?”

Mrs. Go stopped her steps and answered briefly, “Everything went well, Sir.”

“Are you sure there was no problem at all?”

“Yes,” Mrs. Go glanced at Ashley who was staring at the folder blankly, “Mr. Lim seemed happy to meet Miss Ashley.”

Her father's eyebrows rose in satisfaction. "Wait outside. I might talk to you later."

“Yes, Sir,” Mrs. Go turned around and went out. She closed the door, then sat on the chair at the front of the room, waiting.

Ashley blinked after hearing the door across from them close. Then ventured to speak, “Can I ask you for one thing besides what's written there?”

"Your father just complained about your attitude. And now you want to demand something?" Her mother sneered at her.

Meanwhile, his father was silent for a while, then took a breath and snorted in annoyance. “What do you want?”

Ashley breathed very slowly, preparing to make her request. "Grandpa's car... is it still here? The one he used to ride in all the time."

She saw her father's face scrunch up in question. Her mother's expression was the same, except that her puzzled and curious look was more obvious.

Ashley continued her request, “Can I have it for me?”

"It's an old car. Just buy a new one, I'll pay for it,“ her father immediately refused without thinking.

”I want grandpa's car," Ashley still tried to get what she wanted. After all, what she was asking for was not a luxury and would not inconvenience or even harm anyone. Her tone was not whining. But it sounded more pleading with a hint of pain. “I miss him.”

Her mother immediately hardened her jaw and looked away after hearing Ashley's words. Meanwhile, her father tried to restrain himself in his silence that gave off a cold aura.

Until finally her father called Mrs. Go to come inside and said, "Tell Mr. Gu to take father’s car to a car repair shop. Fix it as best they can."

“Yes, Sir,” Mrs. Go replied briefly while giving a small nod.

After hearing her father's words, Ashley immediately stretched out her hand to open the folder and opened the signing page. She scratched her signature and affixed her personal stamp. Then closed it.

“Thanks, Dad.”

At first, Josh thought he had misheard. But the distance between where Ashley was sitting and the door of the room was not far. And the room wasn't that big either. So it was enough to allow him to hear any sound that came from inside, even if it was a bit soft.Josh tilted his head again while looking through the clear glass on the door. From where he was, he could only see Ashley's back. The face and figure lying in front of the girl was covered by her body. But several medical machines and many cords that looked interconnected and hanging there were quite clearly visible. Also some of the little things the girl did—rubbing the face of the patient lying there, and adjusting the patient's clothes and blanket—could be clearly captured by his eyes. Ashley’s words that she spoke again could also be heard well by Josh's ears.“I know I shouldn't have complained to you. But now, no one can listen to me, Mom. In the past, there was Mrs. Go who was always the one I talked to about things. S

PRESENT DAY“Thank you Mr. Jung,” Josh took the small paper bag that his secretary handed him. This morning he realized that he had gone out yesterday without his cell phone. The panic that attacked him due to the incident with Sharon automatically blinded and dulled all his thoughts and common sense. The last time he held his cell phone was in his room before the meeting. He turned off the voice mode and put his cell phone in the drawer because he felt too dizzy to face Sharon. Little did he know that he would be forced to accept the enormous consequences of his actions.Regret still hung around, shaking, and terrorizing him until this moment. And he allowed himself to be gnawed by it. Because he thought he deserved to be tortured by the pain that was brutally punching him in his heart and head. Even if he punched himself physically for punishment, it felt like it wouldn't be enough to make up for what he had done. Josh would never be able to forgive himself. For if only, yesterday h

Ashley searched through tons of articles about her family, Josh's family, and what incidents had happened all this time.Ever since she was forced to return to Auckland, the pain in her heart made her not want to know anything about anything concerning her family. She seemed to leave everything behind. That's why she really didn't know anything. Her head was throbbing with pain when she finally ended her search and closed her phone. The news she had just gotten made her shoulders slump instantly. It was as if her energy and life had evaporated without a trace.Until a knock on her bedroom door finally woke Ashley up from her empty reverie."Miss, it's me. I brought you a snack."Mrs. Go's voice came from behind the door.“Yes, come in,” Ashley said, and the woman walked in.She walked over to Ashley who was sitting in front of her dressing table. She placed the tray she was carrying on the empty part of the table."You didn't come down for breakfast earlier. Mrs. Gu got nagged because

Ashley was stunned for a long time. And when Josh moved to move the chair back so she could sit down, that's when she returned to her senses. Her legs automatically moved closer to sit on the chair. She quietly inhaled and exhaled very slowly and carefully.Behind her confusion and nervousness that suddenly attacked her, there was a very odd feeling that somehow also sneaked into her heart at that moment. How could someone she once liked, who had never seen her as a girl, who she wanted to forget... was now sitting in front of her as her future husband.Josh returned to his seat across from Ashley, still with his thin smile that was hard to translate. “I've ordered food,” he raised his hand as he turned to one of the waiters standing not far from them for a signal. The waiter who caught Josh's instruction responded with a small nod and disappeared into a doorway.“Your favorite signature set,” Josh continued.Ashley, who had been following Josh's gaze, turned her head and looked at h

As promised, before five o'clock Mrs. Go was knocking on Ashley's door again. They said they were giving her time to rest. But before that she had been buried with a pile of big problems first. So how could she rest?Even just lying down and closing her eyes was impossible. Her head ached from the effects of the journey as well as being overwhelmed by the sentences written in the document. Meanwhile, her body continued to move restlessly with a sense of anxiety that she could not describe the excruciating sensation. After trying to lie down for almost half an hour and failing, Ashley got up and sat down again. Her eyes stared at the front cover of the folder and drifted into a blank reverie. Her head did feel full. But something inside didn't take shape at all. Everything was abstract and hard to decipher.Yet, she was not considering anything. Because there was nothing for her to consider. Everything her parents proposed was an order and a threat, not an offer. There was no way for h

Ashley was speechless. She was only able to stare at her mother who walked away fiercely. Even until the woman disappeared behind the majestic main door, she still looked there. It was as if the empty air had left a trace of her mother's sadism. It was only when the silhouette of Mrs. Go re-entering the house filled her vision that she came to her senses and quickly returned to the pages of documents. Her eyes twitched furiously as she continued the last sentence she had left. Her head lowered deeply to read it more clearly. As if to make sure all the series of letters he saw were not mere illusions.Word by word, sentence by sentence. Ashley read, combined, and deduced the meaning of everything written there. She forced her focus to be fully devoted to understanding all the articles of the agreement without misinterpreting them.“Miss,” Mrs. Go leaned over slightly to interrupt Ashley's focus, “I'll get a pen and your personal stamp.”“W-wait a minute,” Ashley suddenly raised her pal

ASHLEY’S SECOND RETURN—FLASHBACK“You've finally home. Sit down. And read this,” Ashley’s mother commanded as soon as she saw her daughter’s arrival at the house.Ashley had literally just arrived from a long flight from Auckland to Korea. Although she knew her days ahead would not be as easy as before, since the trip from the airport the only thing in her plan was that she could immediately sleep and relax her muscles that had been very stiff.Of course, that plan didn't come out of nowhere. She landed during the daytime. So it was obvious that neither of her parents were home during that time. That's why she dared to make such a plan. Especially when Mrs. Go, her assistant, said that she didn't have anything scheduled that afternoon. The most likely time she would see her parents was at dinner. It was then that she would probably know the exact reason she was called home—after a very long period of time, after all those long years she was sent away from home for the second time.Suc

Ashley regained her self-control after letting her emotions out through crying in one of the restaurant's private dining rooms. The crying was quite intense. But she did her best to muffle her voice, until all she could hear was a low, stifled shriek. Her tears overflowed. Her chest was tight. And her eyes were swollen after all the turmoil she had let out until there was nothing left. It was as if all the inner wounds that she had been suppressing, spilled out all at once without mercy.Someone might have heard her from outside. The waitress passing by might also want to go in and check the noise she was making. But Ashley couldn't hold back the explosion of anger and sadness that was clogging up her chest. She didn't even care about manners or shame anymore. After a while, she cleaned her face and slightly fixed her light makeup before exiting the room. Although the polish still couldn't cover her red and very puffy eyes. She took a deep breath before pushing open the door, hoping t
