Chapter 4 Confrontation

Author: Quincy Lawrence
I couldn't remember how I felt back then.

I was disappointed, for sure. Still, I told myself it was pointless to dwell on it. After all, it was no big deal.

His refusal to compromise on that matter didn't change anything between us, but the sight of the matching mugs on the dining table now pierced my heart like a knife.

The truth was, he could compromise for the right person, and that person wasn't me.

I staggered to the bedroom to find an elegant, ornate king bed.

The woman drawled, "Clyde had the bed custom-designed, saying the color complemented my complexion. He would pounce on me after I bathed and waited for him on the bed, every time. Oh, by the way. That time, I was wearing my black lingerie when he got me pregnant. He loves it when I wear them. Can you even get him aroused?"

Her words were a wrenching punch to my gut.

I could almost imagine Clyde holding her and being intimate with her on the same king bed on many nights without my knowledge.

I took a deep breath to numb the incredible pain.

The gilded mahogany headboard shone under the lights, reflecting the true color of the marriage I once blindly believed was happy.

My parents' words from eight years ago rang in my ears. I was determined to sell my property to help Clyde's finances back then.

They told me Clyde would take my sacrifice for granted, even if I played an important role in supporting his career. They told me marrying a man of his status would break my heart. They didn't want me to choose the wrong person, yet I believed he truly loved me.

Later, I thought I had proven my parents wrong when he proposed to me with a 5% share of his company and a hillside villa, promising he would never let me down.

It turned out there was a limit to his promise.

When I snapped out of my trance, the woman was still talking. She told me she had lived there for three years.

Over the past three years, Clyde actually "worked overtime" at her place.

They didn't meet anywhere else but here because it satisfied his need for a thrill.

"I bet you didn't know he would ask me to meet him in the supermarket when the two of you were on your grocery trip. We would brush hands whenever we walked past each other. It's exciting to have a tryst right next to you.

"Clyde isn't worried about you discovering it at all. After all, you fully trusted him and would never suspect anything. As expected, you're unaware that we have been flirting," she mocked.

The suffocating pain made way for indescribable resentment. It wasn't because Clyde cheated on me.

I resented him for feigning affection and showering me with lies and deception after he cheated on me. It was ignorant of me to have put every effort into cherishing him.

I wiped my tears away and sneered at the woman who grinned at me. Then, I cut to the chase. "I guess you want to replace me, which is why you exposed your affair. You want to break me by letting me learn that he has been committing cheating so that I'll divorce him."

She nodded without shame. "That's right. Well, you know what to do now."

I shook my head with a wry smile. "I planned to divorce him without dragging it out until just now. Your arrogance irritates me, so I want you to suffer as well. As long as I don't divorce him, he can never acknowledge you as his wife. You should remember that your furniture was bought with our money.

"Besides, you don't know Clyde at all. He's a businessman; his interests are his priorities. He's currently taking his company public, so he won't risk his business and allow himself to be involved in a scandal at this time.

"He can't afford to let the public learn about his infidelity. He would kick you to the curb without batting an eye to avoid that. Remember, you're disposable. Soon, another woman will replace you."

Her face visibly paled.

She blanched as I provoked her, yet she tried to appear powerful. She protested, "I don't believe you! I have known Clyde since we were young! He said I'm special!"

Clyde vowed to be loyal to me when we got married, too. His words made me believe I was special as well.

I stared at her, finding her as pathetic as I was.

When I looked sideways, the matching mugs came into my view and immediately got on my nerves.

I picked up a mug without looking at her. "Did he say so? Then, you don't know how pathetic you are. Watch this."

She shot me a confused look.

Narrowing my eyes, I smashed the mug onto the ground.

It crashed, and the impact sent the shards flying everywhere. One of them even left a trail of blood on my face.

She let out a shriek.

I didn't feel any pain. Instead, a thrill ran through my body.

At the same time, the door opened, and Clyde entered the room.

Covering my face with a hand, I cried between sobs, "Clyde, you have been lying to me, right?"

Clyde frowned deeply, his voice sharp with confusion. "What's that supposed to mean?"I couldn't help but laugh. Grabbing a document from the desk, I walked over and held it out to him."Clyde, this isn't the same world it used to be."As of today, the board of directors has unanimously voted to remove you as chairman. Effective immediately, I'll be taking over the company."You've already signed the divorce papers. We'll finalize things the day after tomorrow."Oh, and before you signed the papers, I had my attorney start proceedings to recover all the money you spent on your mistress over the years. Since that was marital property, I'm just taking back what's mine."His eyes flew wide. He was stunned silent for a long while before he finally spoke, disbelief dripping from every word."This was your plan all along. You never meant to forgive me. You were just waiting to take everything. You want me ruined, is that it?"I met his gaze with a calm, steady smile. I didn't need to

A few key projects had just wrapped up smoothly and profitably.Without the slightest hesitation, I doubled everyone's bonus on the spot. No way Clyde was skipping it.At the party, my team came up one by one to toast me, all wearing smiles that were more than just polite—they were genuine.Clyde, on the other hand, was more like the wallpaper. Just… there. After yet another employee offered their toast and left, Clyde stood off to the side, swirling his drink with a thoughtful look on his face."Anya," he said slowly, "it's only been several months, and you've already got the whole company eating out of your hand."I pretended not to hear the edge in his voice, clinked my glass lightly against his, and smiled like I didn't know exactly what he was getting at."How's Gianna doing? All the project managers in the room had once stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Clyde and me. We had weathered late nights and high-stakes decisions together. So when I stepped into the conference room, their faces lit up with genuine surprise and warmth. They immediately gathered around, firing off questions, eager to know why I was back.I smiled and made the announcement with calm authority."Mr. Sherwood has some personal matters to deal with at the moment, so I'll be temporarily stepping in as acting chairwoman."The moment the words left my mouth, the room erupted into spontaneous applause. As I looked around at those familiar faces, memories came rushing back—nights spent huddled over drafts, rewriting proposals until dawn, chasing deadlines with nothing but caffeine and grit to keep us going. That night, while I pretended to be asleep, Clyde tiptoed out to the balcony.I was curled up in the living room, silent as a shadow, and I heard the soft murmur of his voice as he whispered sweet nothings to her."I only ignored you today to calm Anya down. Don't be silly—of course I care about you and the baby."I couldn't hear her response, but whatever she said must have worked. Clyde hesitated for a moment, then gave in with a sigh of defeat."Wait for me. I'll be there in a minute."When he turned around and saw me there, his face drained of color. Caught red-handed after promising me the moon just hours ago—he must have known how ridiculous he looked.I spared him the awkwardness, playing the understanding wife to perfection."Is something wrong with Gianna?" I asked gently. "Let me go with you. I'm a woman—I'll notice things you might miss."He blinked, clearly stunned. It hadn't occurred to him that I would offer that.He reached for my hand, squeezing it like I had j

"So what you're saying is… You really cheated on me for three years?"I zeroed in on the heart of it, sharp and fast like a blade.Clyde paused for a second, then gave a reluctant nod."But Anya, please, trust me. I've only ever loved you. From the start, it's always been you. I never meant to betray our marriage…"A wave of nausea slammed into my throat so hard it stole my breath. I tried to swallow it down, but in the end, I couldn't. I bolted for the bathroom and threw up until the world tilted sideways.Clyde came in after me. His face was clouded, unreadable, but he crouched down beside me anyway. Gently, he pulled my hair back and rubbed my back in slow, careful circles like he used to—like it still meant something.Clyde couldn't hold his liquor well. Back when he was clawing his way up, landing clients and deals, it was always me at the table, drinking with wolves in suits and snakes in ties.Every time I drank too much and ended up puking—hugging the toilet, half-consci

A single tear slipped from the corner of my eye. My vision blurred, my eyes turned red, and I staggered—but I held myself together and stared straight at Clyde. He didn't answer my question. Instead, he hurried forward, shrugged off his jacket, and draped it over my shoulders. His voice shook."Anya, your face is hurt. Let me take you to the hospital, okay?"Inside, I felt nothing but coldness. He was dodging the question—and avoidance usually spoke louder than any answer.Still, I nodded. I didn't blow up at him, didn't demand a fight.…Before I knocked on that door—hell, even before I got the address—I had planned to part ways with Clyde on decent terms.Growing up in a home where my parents loved each other deeply, I learned early on how much loyalty in a marriage meant. So, when I realized Clyde had cheated, I told myself no matter how much I loved him, I had to cut that rot out of my life. The next morning, Clyde miraculously made me breakfast, clearly intending to please me.Since expanding his business scale, he hadn't made me breakfast in a long time. What I used to think was a sweet gesture now seemed worthless.
