Chapter 1 Discovering the Affair

Author: Quincy Lawrence
An unknown number messaged me a picture.

My husband, Clyde Sherwood, showed up in a baby store instead of going on a business trip as planned. The picture showed him gently putting his arm around a woman.

She was lifting her belly with one hand and drawing the other behind to support her back. It was a typical pregnant woman's posture.

They would exchange opinions regarding a displayed good from time to time, resembling future parents who looked forward to their child's birth.

My mind instantly went blank at the sight. I couldn't process what I had seen.

I dialed his number, but he didn't answer the call.

Instead, he sent me a message, saying he was in a meeting.

After staring at the message for a long time, I finally grabbed the car key and headed out.

I needed to see it before I believed it.

I recognized the shopping mall in the picture. It was just nearby. I would arrive at my destination in twenty minutes by car if I drove fast.

When I arrived, the pair was still browsing for a stroller in the store.

Clyde had a gentle smile on his face. He would occasionally run his hands over the surface of the stroller as he talked to the woman. He also consulted the shopping guide, treating the matter seriously as if evaluating the investment value of a big project.

The sight was touching, but somehow it stung my eyes.

The last time he accompanied me on a shopping trip was like a lifetime ago. I had to force him to join me that time. He was glued to the couch the whole time.

He would agree with whatever I chose, but those were more of a perfunctory response instead of a genuine answer.

The man in the store was like a stranger to me.

I suddenly felt dizzy.

I patiently waited at the public seating as my husband and his mistress picked out essentials for their baby.

About two hours later, they got everything they wanted.

I watched as he checked out at the counter and gave the cashier the delivery address. Then, the pair left the store arm in arm in good spirits.

His smile froze when he spotted me.

The woman beside him visibly tensed when she noticed me. She reached out for his hand for comfort.

I glanced at their joined hands and forced myself to smile. Meeting his eyes, I asked, "Do you want to tell me something?"

Clyde regained his composure after the initial panic. He handed her the things they bought and the car key he was holding, softly urging, "Go on without me."

She cast a nervous look at me. Chewing her lip, she nodded in reluctance.

He stroked her back soothingly.

It was the last straw.

Driven by anger, I squared up to the woman and extended an arm to stop her. "Where are you going? It's not every day I find my husband cheating on me. We need to talk now. Don't you dare run—"

Clyde put a hand on my shoulder, but I threw his hand off.

"Get your hand off me!" The way he shared an intimate moment with her earlier made me nauseous.

His eyes widened in disbelief. He had never expected me to swat his hand away.

He was on the verge of losing his temper, but he changed his mind after reading the emotions stirring in my eyes—hatred and hurt. He softly said, "It's not what it looks like, Anya. Let's go home. I'll tell you everything at home."

I returned his gaze mockingly, a wry smile curling my lips. "It's exactly what it looks like! You have been unfaithful and have been having an affair! And now she's carrying your child!"

I screamed at him, and a pang struck my chest.

At that moment, realization belatedly dawned on me. The man I had loved for twelve years had cheated on me.

I closed my eyes as I announced, "Let's get a divorce, Clyde."

Clyde frowned deeply, his voice sharp with confusion. "What's that supposed to mean?"I couldn't help but laugh. Grabbing a document from the desk, I walked over and held it out to him."Clyde, this isn't the same world it used to be."As of today, the board of directors has unanimously voted to remove you as chairman. Effective immediately, I'll be taking over the company."You've already signed the divorce papers. We'll finalize things the day after tomorrow."Oh, and before you signed the papers, I had my attorney start proceedings to recover all the money you spent on your mistress over the years. Since that was marital property, I'm just taking back what's mine."His eyes flew wide. He was stunned silent for a long while before he finally spoke, disbelief dripping from every word."This was your plan all along. You never meant to forgive me. You were just waiting to take everything. You want me ruined, is that it?"I met his gaze with a calm, steady smile. I didn't need to

A few key projects had just wrapped up smoothly and profitably.Without the slightest hesitation, I doubled everyone's bonus on the spot. No way Clyde was skipping it.At the party, my team came up one by one to toast me, all wearing smiles that were more than just polite—they were genuine.Clyde, on the other hand, was more like the wallpaper. Just… there. After yet another employee offered their toast and left, Clyde stood off to the side, swirling his drink with a thoughtful look on his face."Anya," he said slowly, "it's only been several months, and you've already got the whole company eating out of your hand."I pretended not to hear the edge in his voice, clinked my glass lightly against his, and smiled like I didn't know exactly what he was getting at."How's Gianna doing? All the project managers in the room had once stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Clyde and me. We had weathered late nights and high-stakes decisions together. So when I stepped into the conference room, their faces lit up with genuine surprise and warmth. They immediately gathered around, firing off questions, eager to know why I was back.I smiled and made the announcement with calm authority."Mr. Sherwood has some personal matters to deal with at the moment, so I'll be temporarily stepping in as acting chairwoman."The moment the words left my mouth, the room erupted into spontaneous applause. As I looked around at those familiar faces, memories came rushing back—nights spent huddled over drafts, rewriting proposals until dawn, chasing deadlines with nothing but caffeine and grit to keep us going. That night, while I pretended to be asleep, Clyde tiptoed out to the balcony.I was curled up in the living room, silent as a shadow, and I heard the soft murmur of his voice as he whispered sweet nothings to her."I only ignored you today to calm Anya down. Don't be silly—of course I care about you and the baby."I couldn't hear her response, but whatever she said must have worked. Clyde hesitated for a moment, then gave in with a sigh of defeat."Wait for me. I'll be there in a minute."When he turned around and saw me there, his face drained of color. Caught red-handed after promising me the moon just hours ago—he must have known how ridiculous he looked.I spared him the awkwardness, playing the understanding wife to perfection."Is something wrong with Gianna?" I asked gently. "Let me go with you. I'm a woman—I'll notice things you might miss."He blinked, clearly stunned. It hadn't occurred to him that I would offer that.He reached for my hand, squeezing it like I had j

"So what you're saying is… You really cheated on me for three years?"I zeroed in on the heart of it, sharp and fast like a blade.Clyde paused for a second, then gave a reluctant nod."But Anya, please, trust me. I've only ever loved you. From the start, it's always been you. I never meant to betray our marriage…"A wave of nausea slammed into my throat so hard it stole my breath. I tried to swallow it down, but in the end, I couldn't. I bolted for the bathroom and threw up until the world tilted sideways.Clyde came in after me. A single tear slipped from the corner of my eye. My vision blurred, my eyes turned red, and I staggered—but I held myself together and stared straight at Clyde. He didn't answer my question. Instead, he hurried forward, shrugged off his jacket, and draped it over my shoulders. His voice shook."Anya, your face is hurt. Let me take you to the hospital, okay?"Inside, I felt nothing but coldness. He was dodging the question—and avoidance usually spoke louder than any answer.Still, I nodded. I couldn't remember how I felt back then.I was disappointed, for sure. Still, I told myself it was pointless to dwell on it. After all, it was no big deal. His refusal to compromise on that matter didn't change anything between us, but the sight of the matching mugs on the dining table now pierced my heart like a knife. The truth was, he could compromise for the right person, and that person wasn't me.I staggered to the bedroom to find an elegant, ornate king bed.The woman drawled, "Clyde had the bed custom-designed, saying the color complemented my complexion. He would pounce on me after I bathed and waited for him on the bed, every time. Oh, by the way. That time, I was wearing my black lingerie when he got me pregnant. He loves it when I wear them. Can you even get him aroused?"Her words were a wrenching punch to my gut.I could almost imagine Clyde holding her and being intimate with her on the same king bed on many nights without my knowledge.I took a deep breath to n

The next morning, Clyde miraculously made me breakfast, clearly intending to please me.Since expanding his business scale, he hadn't made me breakfast in a long time. What I used to think was a sweet gesture now seemed worthless. I disposed of the food. Then, I returned to the baby store and asked for the delivery address he had left.I didn't want a confrontation. I simply wanted to put an end to our marriage. I was curious about how far he would go to protect her.I couldn't help but be surprised when I looked at the address.Doubts gnaw at me. I thought. Before I realized it, I had crumpled the paper.I calmed my running thoughts and knocked on the door. The woman I met yesterday answered the door. With an exaggerated look, she put a hand on her belly, making sure I wouldn
