Chapter 4

Author: Do Re Mi Fa
The emcee had tried to warm up the atmosphere awkwardly for quite some time on stage, and when he saw us come out, he finally sighed in relief.

“Let’s give a warm round of applause to welcome the lovely couple!”

Lucian stood beside me with a practiced smile on his face, yet he did not look at me.

Instead, he kept glancing back toward the main table.

That table had originally been reserved for my parents.

My parents had passed away, and that seat was meant to remain empty as a gesture of remembrance.

But now, Marisol sat there without shame.

She had changed into a pale pink dress, her makeup delicate and pitiful, yet when Lucian looked her way, she secretly formed a heart with her fingers.

I took in everything before me and let out a silent, cold laugh.

When it came time for the vows, Lucian appeared distracted.

“Mr. Lucian Drake, do you take Miss Evangeline Cross as your wife, to love and cherish, in sickness and in health, in poverty and in wealth, for better or worse?”

Lucian glanced at his watch and recited the vows quickly, “I do. In sickness and in health, in poverty and in wealth, I will stand by you.”

After he finished, he did not even wait for my response. Instead, he lowered his voice and urged me, “Let’s wrap this up quickly. Marisol’s medication will wear off soon.

“I don’t feel comfortable leaving her alone—I need to take her home right away.”

I had lifted the microphone, about to speak.

At that moment, Marisol suddenly reacted.

She clutched her chest abruptly and let out an exaggerated, dramatic sob before her entire body went limp and slid from the chair onto the floor.

“Lucian… I feel so awful… am I going to die…”

The commotion was so loud that everyone’s attention instantly turned toward her.

Lucian reacted as though he had been burned.

He shoved my hand away without a word and rushed off the stage.

“Marisol! What’s wrong? Don’t scare me!”

He lifted Marisol into his arms and shouted anxiously, “Call an ambulance! Hurry and call an ambulance!”

Marisol trembled in his arms, clutching his collar as she cried, “Don’t worry about me… today is your wedding…

“I shouldn’t have come… just let me die…”

“Don’t say something so stupid! How can a wedding be more important than your life!”

Lucian’s eyes reddened as he turned and shouted at me on the stage, “Pause the wedding! I need to take Marisol to the hospital!

“Use your head—she’s a patient! Whatever it is, we’ll talk about it when I get back!”

The entire hall was in an uproar.

The guests exchanged shocked glances.

“What’s going on? The groom ran off holding another woman?”

“Isn’t that Lucian’s childhood friend? This is way too much!”

“The bride is being publicly humiliated… this is heartbreaking.”

I stood on the stage, silently watching Lucian carry Marisol toward the exit.

“Stop.

“No need to pause the wedding. And no need to go to the hospital.”

Lucian stopped in his tracks and turned back to glare at me, his voice filled with anger, “Do you even have a shred of humanity? Marisol is about to die!”

“She won’t die.”

I looked at him coldly.

“Since everyone is here, allow me to present you with a small gift.”

I stood by the window upstairs, looking down at the figure who resembled a clown, and felt nothing but annoyance.“Miss Cross, should we have security remove him? He’s affecting the company’s image,” Edwin Hale asked, his brow tightly furrowed.“No need.”Since I was about to attend the celebration banquet anyway, I decided to deal with him myself. Half an hour later, I walked out of the building surrounded by a group of executives.Seeing me appear, Lucian—still on his knees—brightened instantly. He suddenly rushed forward, trying to grab onto my leg.“Eva, you finally agreed to see me!”He was filthy and reeking, with scars left from where Marisol had scratched him. He looked utterly revolting.I took a step back, and the bodyguards beside me immediately stepped forward, pinning him down and twisting his arms behind his back.“Let me go! I’m Evageline Cross’s husband!”Lucian struggled and shouted, then looked up at me.“Eva, I know I was wrong. My mother is dead, and

Lucian was released from the police station three days later.Because Marisol’s injuries were not serious, and the rich man did not want to escalate the matter or damage his own reputation, both sides chose to settle the dispute. However, just as he stepped out of the gate, he received a call from the hospital.“Mr. Drake, we regret to inform you that your mother… has just passed away.”Holding the phone, Lucian stood at the entrance of the police station as if struck by lightning.Outside, the rain poured heavily, soaking through his body, yet he felt nothing. He rushed to the hospital in a frenzy, only to see a cold body covered by a white sheet. The nurse told him that before she died, Miriam had been calling out his name—and mine. She passed away in regret, lamenting that she had enabled Lucian’s bad behavior, that she had missed out on such a good daughter-in-law, and that she had ever spoken up for that “vixen” in the first place. After handling his mother’s funeral, Luc

After the storm of public opinion passed, harsh reality followed in its wake.Lucian’s company was finished.Because of my withdrawal of investment and the exposure of evidence, all partners terminated their contracts and demanded compensation for breach. Now, apart from a debt that reached into the tens of millions, Lucian truly had nothing left.Meanwhile, at the hospital, Miriam’s condition had rapidly worsened due to shock and lack of proper follow-up treatment. The doctors issued a final warning: she needed an immediate craniotomy, or she would not survive more than three days. The surgery and subsequent ICU care would cost at least 500,000 dollars. For the Lucian of the past, that amount had been nothing more than the price of a handbag or a bottle of wine for Marisol. But for the man he had become, it was an astronomical sum. He sold everything he could—his watches, his suits—and even took out high-interest loans, yet he still only managed to gather 100,000 dollars.Wi

I was not paying attention to Lucian’s miserable situation for the moment, because not only did Marisol fail to learn her lesson, but she had even tried to strike back. That night, a trending topic exploded on social media:#Heir abuses power to bully others, forcing a depressed patient to her death#When one clicked into it, there was a long post written by Marisol. The post included a photo of a wrist wrapped in gauze, faintly stained with blood, as well as a picture of her receiving an IV in a hospitalIn the article, Marisol portrayed herself as an innocent, fragile girl, each word dripping with grief.[I truly never expected that simply wanting to wear a wedding dress one last time to fulfill a dream in my final moments would cause such a storm.[Lucian and I had grown up together since childhood, like family, and there was never anything inappropriate between us.[Evangeline is a lofty, privileged young lady. She looked down on our relationship, and I accepted that.[But

The hall behind me had already descended into chaos, but I did not look back. I got into the car and instructed the driver, “Return to the company.”At the hotel, Lucian tried to chase after me, but a crowd surrounded him.The suppliers and creditors who had once partnered with the Drakes only out of respect for Cross’s now stared at him with fierce, demanding eyes.“Mr. Drake, is it true that Miss Cross just withdrew her investment?”“Since the Crosses have withdrawn funding, please settle the remaining balance now. We’re a small business too.”“Mr. Drake, the bank just called and said they’re freezing your accounts. What about our payments? If you don’t pay today, we’ll start taking goods to offset the debt!”Lucian stood trapped in the center. His suit was wrinkled and disheveled, his tie hung crookedly, and sweat poured down his face as he looked utterly miserable.“Everyone, don’t rush! Don’t rush! Eva is just upset with me. “We’ve been together for seven years! She w

I snapped my fingers. The massive LED screen behind me suddenly lit up.Instead of the wedding photos that were supposed to play, a series of images and screenshots appeared on the screen.Countless photos showed Lucian and Marisol in questionable situations: Lucian feeding Marisol a piece of cake, Marisol sitting on Lucian’s lap while he played games, and records of the two of them checking into hotels late at night…Then, a recording echoed throughout the entire hall.It was Marisol’s soft voice:“Lucian, when are you going to break up with that old hag? I feel nauseous just looking at her face.”Lucian’s indifferent voice followed, “Just bear with it, baby. That old hag is boring, but she’s really easy to fool.“She gives away millions in investments without hesitation. Once I take full control of Drake & Co., I’ll dump her—and then I’ll be with you every day.”The entire hall fell into a deathly silence.Everyone stood frozen in shock.Lucian’s face turned deathly pale,
