Chapter 3

Autor: Scarlet Leaves
I was very satisfied with William—so satisfied that, for a moment, I thought he might be the exception. But sometimes, reality has a way of striking back far too quickly.

On the day of the family ball rehearsal, I went to the Colombo estate on Craten Island to find him. He was standing close beside Jennifer, lifting a glass of whiskey to his lips for a sip.

Then Jennifer lowered her head and pressed her lips against the very rim he had just touched.

After she drank, William picked up the glass again, as if to take another sip—but he frowned. Instead of drinking, he set it aside and told a nearby attendant, "Bring me a fresh glass."

I stood at the doorway, watching everything unfold.

When William looked up and saw me, he paused for a moment.

"Sophia, you're here."

He walked over, his expression unchanged.

"Jennifer's blood sugar dropped a bit. She fainted a few times earlier. I want to finish the rehearsal quickly so we don't hold everyone up."

He glanced back at her.

"Finish your drink and get back to rehearsal."

Jennifer held the glass he had set down, leisurely taking another sip.

Then she smiled at me.

"Your new fiancé really is a block of wood. No matter how much I try to tease him, he doesn't react at all. This time, it looks like you've finally chosen the right one."

She walked off in her heels, her back as brazen as ever.

I stood there, my heart pounding. That look in her eyes—the one that said she was determined to win—I knew it all too well.

Sensing something was off, William pulled me into his arms.

"Baby, don't overthink it. The person who was handling this got into a car accident a few days ago. Jennifer stepped in temporarily to help. I owe her this favor."

I nodded, resting my head against his shoulder.

"You know… Jennifer seems to like stealing my fiancés. She's taken every one of them before you. I'm afraid you might…"

He tightened his embrace.

"Don't worry. You're the only one worthy of being my wife."

The moment he finished speaking, his phone rang. I glanced at the screen—it was a message from Jennifer.

He checked it, then let go of me.

"I need to take care of something. I'll come find you later."

I watched his retreating figure, my heart sinking little by little.

I thought William would be different. But in less than a week… he had already been keeping in touch with her.

Over the next few days, William clearly noticed my low mood. To cheer me up, he said he'd take me out on his yacht and introduce me to some of his family members.

I decided to give him one more chance.

The yacht was enormous, with champagne and delicate pastries laid out across the deck. William introduced me to the group.

"This is my fiancée, Sophia Colombo."

Several men greeted me with easy smiles, and the atmosphere was fairly relaxed.

After a few exchanges, the conversation shifted to a recent project of the Lucia family.

"How's the shipping route for that batch of goods coming along?"

William frowned.

"There's a critical bottleneck we can't seem to break through. If we could get in touch with Old Tony from the Eastern line, that would solve it. Otherwise, if this drags on, all our initial investment will go to waste."

Before he could say more, a familiar voice cut in.

"Old Tony?" Jennifer walked over with a bright smile. "I know him. My uncle used to do business with him—we've had dinner together several times. If you want to meet him, I can arrange it."

William looked up, a flicker of surprise in his eyes.

Standing beside them, I felt my fingers slowly tighten.

All of William's attention had shifted to Jennifer.

While they were deep in conversation, I quietly took out my phone and sent a message to a number without a name.

The fish is about to take the bait. Proceed as planned.

The day Jennifer moved out of the apartment, I was in the middle of packing. She stood at the doorway, much thinner than before. Her face was still pale, but her eyes were clear."Sophia."I looked up.She pressed her lips together."I came to say thank you."I didn't respond. She lowered her gaze and gently touched her stomach."I've decided to keep the baby."I froze for a moment. She gave a faint smile—soft, nothing like the smug smiles she used to wear."I know you probably think I'm foolish. I used to think I was clever, that I could take any man I wanted. Later, I realized… that wasn't clever. It was a sickness."She paused, her eyes reddening."My parents divorced when I was three. Neither of them wanted me. I was raised by my grandmother… and after she passed, I was alone. I've never been truly loved, so I never learned how to truly love anyone else. When I stole your fiancés, I thought that feeling of triumph meant I was being loved."I watched her, saying nothing

I froze for a moment."You had it checked?"Jennifer nodded, her voice trembling."I went to see a doctor. He said that if you take something like that for too long, it can cause neurological damage. What William gave me… it wasn't folic acid at all."She clutched the blanket tightly."He wanted me to go insane. If I lost my mind, he wouldn't have to marry me."I said nothing."I stole the key to his safe," she continued in a hushed voice. "There are overseas sales contracts inside, along with the full batch records for those drugs. He's planning to run."I stared at her."What do you want to do?"She gritted her teeth."He wants me to go insane… then I'll make sure he dies."Before everything could be exposed, William had already sensed something was off. He booked a flight, planning to leave the country for a while. But on the day he was set to leave, he discovered his passport was missing. It didn't take long for him to connect it to Jennifer's recent behavior. He went

In this game, Jennifer was never meant to be a player—just an intruder.I had no intention of dragging her into this. But she insisted on walking straight into the line of fire. What I was dealing with wasn't small. I didn't want her caught up in it.That night, I deliberately let out a quiet sigh in the apartment."William's been acting strange lately… like he's hiding something. I've asked him, but he won't say a word."Jennifer let out a scoff."What, now that he's mine, you're jealous? Trying to drive a wedge between us?"I lowered my eyes and said nothing more. I had given her a warning. But over the next few days, she only ran to William more frequently.Still, she wasn't entirely foolish. One night, I got up to use the bathroom and noticed her door was open, but she wasn't inside. She didn't come back until three in the morning. Her expression was off, and she had a USB drive clenched in her hand. The next morning, she left early again. When she returned that evening

I shoved Marcello away and shot him a glare."If anyone finds out, everything we've done will be for nothing."He let out a low laugh, his tone lazy."Relax. They're too busy pouring their hearts out to each other. Why would they notice us?""We're about to close the net. Be careful."He nodded, then dipped his head and stole another kiss before finally letting me go.Marcello lowered his voice."I've already bought off William's men. I have the full records of that shipment in my hands."I arched a brow."Reliable?""As long as the money's right, what isn't?"He sneered."And that idiot Jennifer—she's been posting photos from William's office every day, showing off. Documents, computer screens, contracts—everything's crystal clear in her pictures. She thinks she's flaunting her romance, but she's really just putting the evidence on display."I couldn't help but laugh. After straightening my clothes, I returned to the apartment.Jennifer was standing in front of the mirr

William began meeting Jennifer behind my back—more and more often. After each meeting, she would show up with something new: a piece of jewelry, a designer bag.Just like before, she pulled out a bracelet William had given her and flaunted it around the apartment.Lucy's eyes widened dramatically."That bracelet—it's a limited-edition piece. There are only three in the world. Jennifer, who gave it to you?"Jennifer smiled, her expression layered with meaning."Some people think they've tied down an untouchable prize… never realizing the prize has legs of its own."The corner of her lips curled upward. That look of satisfied indulgence—I knew it all too well. She had gotten to William. There was no doubt about it.I swallowed my anger, put on my headphones, and turned the volume all the way up.William hadn't come to see me these past few days. He said he was overwhelmed with work on the shipping route. Then, on my birthday, he suddenly asked to meet. He pulled me into an embr
