Chapter 4

Author: Cotton
Jessie had no interest in watching their little show of love. She brushed past them just as Mark came walking up. When he saw Laura in tears, he quickened his pace. He sounded angry when he spoke.

"Jessie, what did you say to Mom?"

Jessie met his gaze and remained expressionless. Her voice was calm as she countered, "Maybe you should ask your mother what she said to me. I only said one thing."

Mark clearly didn't believe her.

He was about to argue when Laura cut in.

"Mark, be nicer to your sister. I'm fine. I was just overjoyed seeing Jessie again."

Rebuked by their mother, Mark shot Jessie a displeased look but held his tongue.

"Jessie, I had new clothes and shoes prepared for you. Why are your clothes still so ill-fitting?"

Laura frowned after glancing at Jessie.

Jessie lifted her gaze and answered in an irritable manner. "No need. These are fine. I want to see Grandpa."

She moved to leave, but Mark stepped in front of her.

"Grandpa's resting."

"That's not possible. Henry's still with him, isn't he?" Jessie's voice grew anxious. After three long years, she was desperate to see David.

"Henry already left."

Mark sounded annoyed as if she'd ruined their dinner plans with Henry.

"Be patient, Jessie. You can see Grandpa tomorrow," Laura said in a gentle tone while trying to calm her down.

Jessie looked away in frustration. If not for them, she would've made it in time to see David.

Saying nothing more, she turned and walked off.

"Jessie, your room is ready. This time, I want to make things right," Laura said gently.

Jessie didn't want to stay, but she hadn't seen David yet.

"Fine."

Laura was overjoyed. Her gaze shifted to the worn backpack in Jessie's hand. She felt sorry for Jessie.

"Mark, have you set up her room? Let her rest first."

Mark looked uncomfortable.

"There wasn't enough time to get it ready. She'll have to stay in the maid's room for now."

"What did you just say?" Laura couldn't believe what she had just heard.

Mark fell silent.

"Where is the maid's room?" Jessie asked.

She had no desire to argue with them.

After getting directions, she carried her bag and headed into the room on the first floor.

Laura wanted to say something more, but seeing Mark's expression, she held back.

Jessie shut the door. The maid's room was modest, but everything was functional. For a wealthy family like the Stewart family, even the maid's room wasn't too shabby.

Jessie wasn't picky about her living conditions. After all, she'd survived three years in prison, even the solitary confinement cell. This was nothing.

She tidied up a bit, plugged in her phone to charge, and was just responding to a few messages when a knock came at the door.

"Jessie, Mom asked me to come get you for dinner."

Mia stood outside, all smiles.

Jessie could clearly sense the hostility in her eyes.

"I heard you. Let's go."

At the dining table, Laura was overly attentive, piling food onto Jessie's plate. Jessie instinctively raised her hand to cover her plate.

A piece of cauliflower fell onto the table.

Mark sounded irritated.

"Jessie, what are you doing? Mom was just trying to serve you."

"Sorry. It's just a habit."

In prison, whenever someone reached across your plate, it wasn't to serve food. It was to snatch your meal or drop garbage onto it. If you didn't protect it, you didn't get to eat.

Mark let out a cold chuckle.

"Seriously? That's your excuse? You think we're going to buy that?"

Jessie calmly set down her fork and spoon. "Whether you believe me or not, that's your choice."

Laura jumped in quickly.

"Mark, she didn't mean it like that. Let's just eat before the food gets cold."

Mark held his temper, though the glare he gave Jessie was like a blade.

Jessie ignored it. She'd survived worse.

"Jessie, why aren't you eating? Is it not to your liking?"

Laura seemed awfully concerned. Jessie couldn't understand why she was suddenly so attentive.

Three years ago, that would've thrilled Jessie. She used to long for her mother's love and attention, but not anymore.

"I'm not used to the flavors. It's too rich."

The food on the table wasn't greasy, but it had a strong sweet-and-spicy taste. This was clearly Mia's favorite.

Mark sneered.

"You used to eat this just fine. Now it's too much?"

Jessie looked at Mark and spoke calmly.

"I didn't have stomach issues before. After three years of prison food, where being hungry was the norm and eating fast was a survival skill, developing a stomach illness was inevitable."

Mark stiffened. Laura's eyes welled up with tears.

"Jessie, why didn't you call us? I thought you were doing fine in there."

Jessie almost laughed. 'Fine? In prison?'

They hadn't lifted a finger after sending her in.

There was no support. In prison, the weak were trampled by the strong.

She had no money and no power, so of course she suffered.

She certainly tried calling.

"I did."

"That's not possible. We never got a call," Mark uttered.

He then paused.

Jessie sneered. "Two months in, I called home. A maid answered. She told me you said I should focus on serving my sentence and stop calling."

Everyone at the dining table fell silent.

She planned to grab breakfast first. But as soon as the taxi stopped, she saw Ronny, Jack, and even Harry. She walked over stiffly, not sparing Jack a glance. "Why are you all here?""They're heading to Yorvenia for fun. Since we're going to Turnaria, and Veronna Palace is covering three meals a day, t

Mia was rambling. She looked utterly worn out.Jessie guessed she hadn't slept a wink the night before.Since they were kids, whenever Mia made a mistake, the Stewart family would side with her. Even when she hit someone with a car, they had forced Jessie to take the blame. But now, the very people who once defended and loved her no longer stood by her. They had started to resent her, exposing her lies one after another. For her, this must have felt like being cut open slowly with a dull blade. To be despised by those who had once protected her unconditionally must have been unbearable. The truth was, the only reason she could bully Jessie back then was that the Stewart family had blindly defended her. Now, without that blind protection, she was like a lamb waiting for slaughter. She didn't even know when she might be cast out of the Stewart family. To make things worse, because she had framed Jessie, Jack had blacklisted her in the industry. In all honesty, Mia's position had only been swapped with Jessie's.Each time something like this happened, Mark was part of it.He used to bully Jessie, and now his target was Mia. Of course, Mia deserved it. She played her cards poorly despite having a good hand.Jessie didn't feel sorry for Mia.She played with her phone for a while in her room. Suddenly, someone knocked on the door.Jessie thought it was David, and she immediately opened the door. When she saw Laura instead, her expression turned stiff. "What do you want?""Jessie, I've been thinking about this. Why don't we go on a family trip in two weeks? You can decide where we go."Laura wanted to make it up to Jessie. She truly felt guilty today. She hadn't expected Mia to lie about her depression too.Jessie had said she'd gone to see the flag-raising ceremony. Laura knew she had always cared about their promise."Forget it. I'm busy with work."Jessie rejected the offer without even considering it.She was about

Freddy's expression darkened. With a cold snort, he brushed past Jessie and left."Freddy–" Mia, terrified of Mark, quickly called out."What are you calling him for? Afraid we'll eat you alive? If you're not guilty, then tomorrow you'll come with me and Henry to the hospital." Mark kept pressing her.Mia's eyes brimmed with tears. Her expression was extremely pitiful."Mark, do you really have to push me this hard?" she choked out."Oh, please. All I'm asking is for you to get a checkup. How is that me pushing you? Weren't you the one who told everyone in this family you had depression?"Mark actually let out a bitter laugh. What was so difficult about getting tested and proving him wrong? That only proved she'd been lying this whole time.David, watching Mia bite her lip as tears spilled down her cheeks, finally asked, "Mia, you weren't lying about this, were you?"The words made Laura's expression shift. "Don't tell me you used an illness like this to deceive us?""I-I re

"Mark, I wasn't being selfish–"Mia could no longer handle Mark's vicious words. She started crying. As tears spilled from her eyes, she looked up at Mark and stammered, "I couldn't find Savory Kitchen, so I ordered soup from another place on the app. I really didn't mean to lie. I just wanted Mom to love me more."Mark wanted to speak further, but Laura stopped him. "Forget it. Maybe she really didn't mean it.""Mom, you have to believe I didn't do it on purpose. I only lied because Jessie came back, and I felt insecure–"While crying, Mia looked at Laura and tried to act pitiful. For the first time, Mark realized just how infuriating her fake sobs and pitiful act really were. His anger boiled over as he pointed at her and threatened, "Go ahead, lie again if you dare! You claim you couldn't find Savory Kitchen on the delivery app? Funny, because I just searched for it. Five years as a top-rated shop. How the hell did you miss it?""Enough! Do you have to press her this hard?"

Nala brought out the soup and set it in front of Laura.Mark sat across from Laura. He leaned back in his chair and sized up the little place. After a while, he asked Nala, who was rinsing kitchenware, "Jessie used to come here a lot, didn't she?""Yeah. After school she'd often stop by, sit for a bit, and take a bowl of soup home. You're her family, right? She hasn't been here in three years. Where did she go?" Nala asked with a warm smile.Mark didn't answer. Instead, a wave of discomfort rose in him.Jessie went missing for three years because she went to prison in Mia's place.Laura took a sip of the soup, and her eyes immediately welled with tears. What Mia bought home before didn't taste right. Only Jessie's order carried this taste.Mark glanced at her lowered head and sorrowful face. He muttered, "Still think I shouldn't call Mia out? She lies as naturally as breathing. If she can deceive you over something this small, who knows how much worse the bigger lies are?"Lau
