SLADE

I groaned as I struggled to get on my feet. It felt like I’d been hit with a huge brick. My head throbbed from the pain, and my ears rang with the sound of the collapse.

The side of the tombs we were in seemed to have fallen in. Rocks and bricks were everywhere.

“What happened?” Silvia asked as she got up beside me, brushing dust from her hair.

“We walked into a trap,” I muttered, then quickly turned and rushed into the prison cell. My heart sank.

“She’s gone!” I shouted. Ivy’s chair was empty.

I turned and helped Maria to her feet.

“Thank you, Your Highness,” she said sweetly, but I scoffed. Now wasn’t the time for flattery.

“Who’s gone?” Riven asked as he groaned, trying to sit up.

“Scratch that—they're both gone,” I said sharply, referring to Ivy and Selene. “We need to set up checkpoints now. They couldn’t have gone far.”

Riven didn’t wait. He sprinted out of the ruins immediately.

“Damon!” Silvia’s voice cracked. I turned sharply, heart skipping.

“What?” I asked, walking ba

SLADEAs we rode back to Mercia, I could tell Ayla was thinking about a lot of things. Especially the lie we told to Ivy. But Ivy's feelings about who killed Selena would have to wait. There are a lot of pressing matters, including the threat both the High Seer, and Selene made.As we got to the gate of Mercia, we could see the people waving at us in celebration of our victory. The gates of Mercia opened wide, and the people gathered on both sides of the road, cheering loudly. Some threw flowers, others clapped and shouted our names. Children ran alongside the horses, laughing and waving. But Ayla didn’t smile. She kept her eyes forward, her body stiff on the horse. I knew she was thinking about Ivy. About Selene. About what comes next.I leaned closer. “You okay?” I asked softly. She nodded, but didn’t say a word.We rode through the main road until we reached the palace. The guards stepped aside, and Damon helped Ivy down from his horse. She still looked pale, but stronger than bef

AYLASelene’s eyes burned with a wild fury as she clutched the blade that mirrored mine. Ivy’s body lay motionless behind her on the boat, her chest rising and falling slowly.“You won’t take her,” Selene hissed. “She’s mine.”“She’s not a possession,” I said, stepping forward, blade ready. “Shes a person. She deserves love, not lies.”“You don’t know anything about love,” she spat. “You think you can swoop in and be her savior? You’re just a broken omega who got lucky.”Slade moved closer, but I held up my hand. This was between Selene and me.“If you, and your seers really listened to my mother, and I in the dream world. Then you know what she said about Ivy,” I said to her.“I don't care,” she said, shaking her head. “Ivy is mine.”“Ivy has a dark side,” I retorted. “And when she is around you, that dark side then shows. You can't possibly want that for her, do you?” I asked her.“You have no idea what I want,” she said, and charged her blade towards me. With my blade towards me a

AYLA“Go, we'll stay here,” Selene said. “I'll heal her up, and be ready to go,” I looked at her, not sure of what I was going to say.“We had a deal Ayla,” she said, and I stood up. “Just heal her wounds. They were inflicted on her by your people,” I said, and she nodded.I raced outside, and everywhere was filled with smoke. I could see blood platters flying in the air. I walked inside the smokey area to see Soldiers, and Seer's fighting. When I was growing up, I was taught that seers were the mouthpieces of the moon goddess. But I don't think these ones were in that category. I looked up to see Slade, Damon and Silvia leading the fight, and giving it all they have. The whole place was in chaos, so I began searching for the high seer. She has the power to put an end to this thing, either dead or alive.I looked around, and I saw her with a group of seers running out of the fight. Her eyes met with mine. She tapped the seer in front of her. She lifted her arrow, and aimed it. At fi

AYLAI felt myself swinging in different directions, but I still stayed in the same position. It felt like my body was not moving, but also moving at the same time.My head rose up, from being buried in my laps, and I could feel the splash of water all over my face.“Wake up!” I heard, along with a bucket dropping behind me.I blinked as the cold water dripped down my face. My vision was blurry. My head was pounding. My body felt weak.“Where am I?” I asked again, this time louder.“Quiet,” the voice snapped.I tried to move, but the ropes were too tight. My arms were tied behind my back, and my legs were strapped to the legs of the chair. I could feel the wooden frame digging into my skin. The room smelled like mold and something rotten. It was cold. The floor beneath my feet was rough, like stone. A dim light hung above me, swinging slowly like I was deep underground.I took a deep breath and tried to stay calm. I needed to think. I couldn’t panic.Footsteps echoed around the room.

SLADE“Come on, push right, push right!” I yelled, waving my sword, driving the Seers back with my men.“Your Highness—watch out!” someone shouted.I felt a strange pull at my feet.An arrow flew past me and hit the ground hard.“Not again,” I muttered under my breath. Last time, an arrow nearly ended me. I couldn’t afford that now.I jumped to my left, raised my sword, and swung at the next Seer coming at me. He was fast—too fast—but I caught him in the chest. He turned to smoke before his body even hit the ground.I looked around. The same thing was happening everywhere. Our soldiers were winning, but whenever a Seer was badly hurt or fell, they vanished into thin air.“They’re disappearing again!” I shouted.Orin, one of my best fighters, ran up beside me, panting. “They don’t want to be caught. Something is pulling them away once they’re down.”I clenched my jaw. “Then we don’t take prisoners. We stop them, any way we can.”“Yes, sir!”I lifted my sword high and yelled, “All units

AYLAWe broke free from our kiss, and I looked at him with fear, and dread in my eyes. The last time he went out into battle, he returned with an arrow in his neck. But I can save him, I know that. But that doesn't mean I want to see him hurt. Slade let go of my hands, and headed out to face his Soldiers.“We are under attack,” he said after a while of silence. “Why we are under attack is unknown to us, but we do know those attacking us don't want us to live,” he said with so much authority.“But we will live, and we will prosper, and be victorious,” he raised his weapon, and the Soldiers did the same.“So go out, and fight. Listen to your commanders, take as many prisoners as you can. And fight for Mercia!”“For Mercia!” The Soldiers yelled, and all rushed out.I watched from the shadows of the weapon room as Slade walked out with strength in his steps and fire in his eyes. His speech had stirred something deep in the hearts of the soldiers—hope, courage, loyalty. But in me, it st
