登入Celeste's POV
Vaelina was still looking at me with that expression, the one that said she was not going to let this go quietly. "I don't want people pitying me," I said. "That's the honest answer. I don't want to walk into this office every morning and have people looking at me like I'm the rejected Luna who got humiliated in front of her own pack. I worked hard to get here. I want people to see that first." Vaelina opened her mouth. "I know what you're going to say," I said. "Do you?" "You're going to say the Wood twins accepted me and I need to get over it." She pointed at me. "Word for word." "I am over it." She leaned back in her chair and gave me a look so flat it could have been ironed. "Celeste." "I am." "You are a terrible liar and I say that with so much love." She smiled. "You cannot fool someone who actually knows you. I watched you freeze at the sight of two names on a piece of paper. That is not over it." "It was a surprise. That's different from not being over it." "Sure it is." She stood up and smoothed her blazer. "You're over it the same way I'm over my ex. Completely fine until he walks into the room." "Vaelina." "I'm going, I'm going." She held her hands up and backed toward the door, still smiling. "Focus on your work. Be a professional. I'll see you at lunch." "Goodbye." "Over it," she muttered, and pulled the door shut behind her. I stared at the closed door for exactly two seconds and then made a decision. Then I turned back to my desk, opened the first client file and got to work. Whatever I felt about those names on that page was not something I was going to spend a single more minute on today. I was at work. Accounts to manage, a briefing at eleven and a client call at three. That was what mattered right now and that was where my head needed to be. By five o'clock I cleared everything on my desk and sent two reports ahead of their deadlines. Whatever the morning threw at me, the afternoon more than made up for it. *** The house was warm when I got back, the kind of warm that meant someone was in and the evening was already underway. Mason appeared from the hallway the moment I pushed the door open, sleeves rolled up, looking like a man who was entirely too comfortable and entirely too good looking at the end of a Tuesday. "How was your day?" He took my bag from my shoulder before I could set it down. "Stressful," I said. "The usual kind but with extra paperwork." Jason came out behind him. "Food's ready when you are." "Thank you." I started toward the stairs and then stopped because there was someone else standing in the hallway, a woman I did not recognise, neat and composed and waiting with her hands clasped in front of her. "This is Neris," Mason said. "She'll be handling your personal affairs going forward. Whatever you need." Neris smiled warmly and dipped her head. "It's a pleasure to serve you, Luna." Something about hearing that title in this house still caught me off guard in the best way every single time. I smiled at her. "It's lovely to meet you, Neris. Please just call me Celeste." "Eat first," Jason said, steering me gently toward the dining room with a hand at my back. "Shower after. Then come find us." "Come find you where?" He smiled. "Our room." I looked at him. He looked back like it was the most casual thing he ever said in his life, which it absolutely was not. I ate, which took more willpower than it should have because my brain was already somewhere down the hall, and when I was done I pushed back from the table and went upstairs. Neris was already in my room, which I was starting to understand was going to be her natural habitat. Towels out, something that smelled expensive on the vanity and an air about her that said she was very good at her job. I sat on the edge of the bed after my shower, wrapped in a towel, staring at the wardrobe. "I need something that looks," I paused, trying to find the professional version of what I was trying to say. "Attractive. For their room." Neris did not even blink. She went straight to the wardrobe, pushed past three sections and pulled out a set of lingerie in a deep burgundy that I forgot I owned. "This," she said simply. "That's," I looked at it. "Yes. That's the one." She helped me get ready with a quiet, no-nonsense efficiency that made me like her immediately and completely. We talked while she worked, easy conversation, the kind that came naturally with someone who was not trying to perform anything. "Is this your first time with them?" she asked, pinning my hair back loosely. She said it the way you asked someone if they been to a restaurant before, completely without ceremony. I rolled my eyes. "No. It is not." She smiled. "You look nervous." "I'm not nervous." "Your hands are doing that thing." I looked down at my hands and put them flat on my knees. "I still get shy around them sometimes. That is not the same as nervous." Neris laughed, warm and genuine, and I laughed too because honestly it was a little funny. "You are their Luna," she said, handing me my robe. "They are very much yours." "I know that." "Then walk in there like you know you are." I stood up, looked at myself in the mirror for a moment and decided she was right. I tied the robe, walked down the hall to their bedroom and knocked twice. "Come in." Mason's voice, low and even. My heart picked up speed anyway, which was embarrassing considering that Neris was one hundred percent correct that this was absolutely not my first time. I reached out, wrapped my fingers around the cool metal of the handle and turned it, pushing the door open to step inside.Vivian's POVThe house was quiet in the way I liked, with Aiden and Jayden out and nobody around to ask questions.I lay across the couch in the living room with a blanket over my legs and a magazine open on my chest, not reading a word of it. My body still felt warm and lazy from the night with Lucien, and I let myself drift, thinking about nothing in particular. About Soraya, and the dinner we planned for tonight. About how smoothly everything was going. My phone buzzed on the cushion beside me.Lucien. I smiled and picked it up."Come over to my place. Now."My smile faded. I typed back quickly. "Why? I have plans with Soraya tonight."His reply came almost instantly. "Cancel them. This cannot wait.""Is everything okay?""Just come, Vivian."I stared at the screen. There was no kiss, no teasing, none of the warmth I was used to from him. Annoyance flickered through me, and underneath it, something thinner and colder.I shot Soraya a quick message that I would be late, grabbed my
Celeste's POVThe gates of Ulfsang opened for us, and I felt my shoulders drop for the first time since Greywood Road.Mason parked at the front steps and came around to the back door. Jason lifted me out again, blanket and all, and carried me through the entryway and up the stairs while I mumbled that I could walk."You cannot," Jason said."I can.""Not tonight."He set me on the edge of my bed. Mason returned with a first aid kit and a bowl of warm water, and Jason knelt in front of me, studying the bite on my leg with a frown."This one is deep," he said quietly."It looks worse than it is.""It looks exactly as bad as it is." Mason sat beside me and dipped a cloth in the water. "This will sting."It did. I hissed through my teeth and gripped the blanket, and Jason caught my hand."Look at me. Breathe.""I am breathing.""Then breathe slower."I rolled my eyes, though I did it anyway. Mason cleaned the claw marks along my ribs one at a time, glancing at my face every few seconds.
Celeste's POVThe two shapes hit the rogues like a storm breaking over the road. The first slammed into the wolf pinning my neck, and the weight vanished so suddenly I choked on air. I heard bone crack, then a high, wet scream that cut off mid breath. The second wolf was already past me, tearing into the pack with a savagery that made the rogues scatter, and the snarling around me turned from hunting into panic.I dragged myself onto my paws, my leg burning, my ribs slick with blood, and the wind shifted again.Cedar and smoke. Warm skin and rain on stone. A scent I knew better than my own breathing.Mason. Jason.Relief hit me so hard my legs nearly gave out. They moved together without a sound between them, two giant bodies carving through the dark, and every rogue who lunged at them died for it. Throats torn out. Spines snapped. One tried to run for the trees, and Jason caught it by the back of the neck and flung it into the road like a rag.It was over in seconds. The last body
Celeste's POVThe pack hospital came into view before the injured wolves in my back seat stopped groaning.I swung into the entrance bay and barely stopped the car before Leah jumped out and shouted for stretchers. The doors flew open, and a swarm of nurses poured out with the pack doctor right behind them. Within seconds the back seats were empty and the wolves were carried inside, their blood soaked into the upholstery.Rebecca squeezed my arm. "Thank you, Luna. We have them.""Then I am staying," I answered, already following.I did not plan to leave until I knew every one of them was safe. The hours blurred together after that. I helped hold pressure on wounds, fetched water and bandages, and sat beside the boy from the wall while the doctor stitched his side. He gripped my hand through all of it and did not make a sound until the last stitch was tied.By the time the doctor finally stepped back and said no one was in danger, the windows were dark. The corridors hummed with the
Celeste's POVThe room went quiet except for our breathing, and for a long while none of us moved.I lay tangled between them with my cheek on Jason's chest and Mason's hand tracing slow circles down my back. My robe was somewhere on the floor, the sheets were kicked to the foot of the bed, and for the first time in days my head was quiet."I think I forgot my own name for a minute," Mason murmured against my shoulder.Jason laughed under me. "I would pay to hear you try to say it now.""Do not tempt me." I lifted my head and grinned at them both. "I did say before dinner.""You did." Mason kissed my shoulder. "So if the food is cold, that is on you.""Worth it.""We are not arguing," Jason said, and the three of us laughed until my stomach growled loud enough to silence us.That settled it. I borrowed one of Jason's shirts, and we went downstairs together, barefoot and still flushed. The dining room smelled of garlic and herbs, and the food they cooked was still warm enough to coun
Celeste’s POV The gates of the Ulfsang estate swung open as my headlights swept across them, and I rolled up the drive with the radio low and my thoughts finally quiet. Mason's car and Jason's were both parked in front of the house, which was odd. I normally beat them home. I carried my grocery bags through the front door and was barely past the entryway when two pairs of arms wrapped around me. "Welcome home," Mason murmured against my hair. Jason kissed me next, slow and warm, and I melted into it before I could stop myself. "You are back early," I said when I found my voice. "I always get here before you." "We did not have much to do at the company," Jason answered. "So we left." "Are you okay?" Mason asked, searching my face. "Yes." It came out easily. "I am good." "Good." He smiled. "Because we cooked for you. Ourselves." I stared at them. "You did?" "Everything is waiting in the dining room." A grin spread across my face. "You two must be in a very good moo
