Chapter 4

Author: Peachy
I dodged the first attack.

I wasn't so lucky with the second.

Silver-woven chains wrapped around my wrists from behind, and a searing pain shot through me. Silver is poison to werewolves.

They wanted me dead, right here, right now.

"Got her!" the captain of the guard yelled triumphantly.

I was forced to my knees, my hands bound tightly behind my back.

Damon walked over slowly, a sadistic smirk on his face.

"Still claiming to be the Alpha King's mate?" he sneered, standing over me. "Where is he now? Is he coming to save you?"

The crowd erupted in laughter.

"How pathetic!"

"And here I thought she might actually have some powerful backer!"

"Just a crazy bitch!"

Lyla came to my side, holding a small silver dagger. "Selena, you've disappointed me," she said, crouching down and pressing the tip of the blade to my arm. "It's wrong to lie."

The blade cut into my skin. The burning pain made me clench my jaw.

"We have to leave a mark," Lyla whispered. "So everyone knows what you are."

She began carving into my arm.

One agonizing slice, then another, as the rune for "Outcast" was etched into my flesh.

The other Alphas' mates gathered around.

"Let me have a turn."

"This is what traitors deserve."

"Let's teach her a lesson she'll never forget!"

Silver blades left trails of fire across my skin.

Blood flowed freely.

When Damon had seen enough of the humiliation, he planted his foot on my back.

"Now, lie there like the dog you are and eat the dirt off the floor."

I was shoved face-down onto the cold marble.

"Eat!" he snarled, stomping on my back. "Let everyone see what the once-proud princess of Blood Moon has become!"

The laughter grew louder, more piercing.

"Hahaha!"

"Look at the state of her!"

"She totally deserves this!"

I could smell the dirt, feel the burn of the silver, and taste their malice.

Good.

I will remember every single detail of tonight.

I will remember every single face.

"It's not enough," Damon suddenly said. "A traitor like you is a plague on this world."

He shifted into his half-wolf form. His sharp claws gleamed under the moonlight.

"I'm going to cleanse my pack's honor right here," he said, grabbing my hair and forcing my head up. "Everyone will witness the price of betraying the Blood Moon Pack!"

His claws traced a line across my neck.

"Goodbye, Selena."

Just as he was about to rip my throat out—

A single, world-shattering howl tore through the sky.

It wasn't just any howl. It was the roar of a king, a sound that shook the very blood in every wolf's veins.

The crystal chandeliers in the hall began to sway.

Glass goblets shattered.

Everyone froze, their faces draining of color.

"The Alpha King arrives!"

A deep, commanding voice boomed from the entrance.

A tall figure in a black cloak stood in the doorway.

It was the King's second-in-command.

"All hail Alpha King Kael!"

Everyone scrambled to their knees.

Everyone except me.

I lay in a pool of my own blood, but I forced myself to look up.

A man strode into the hall.

He was well over six feet tall, with black hair and eyes of gold.

He radiated absolute power and authority.

Alpha King Kael.

His gaze swept across the hall, finally landing on me.

When he saw the state I was in, his golden eyes instantly turned blood-red.

"What. Have. You. Done. To. Her?!"

The temperature in the hall plummeted.

An overwhelming wave of killing intent washed over everyone.

I pushed myself into a sitting position, looking at the very people who had been torturing me moments before. Now they were all trembling on the floor.

I spoke, my voice weak but every word sharp as glass.

The Goddess gave you a second chance," my voice was raw, but it carried across the silent hall. "You chose Hell."

In my dream, snowflakes danced in the air.I was back in the bloody night from five years ago. On the edge of the Black Forest, three hungry wolves had me surrounded."Maya, run!" I yelled, shoving my handmaiden away. But it was too late. A wolf's claws had already torn open her throat. Blood stained the white snow. I clutched my silver dagger, watching the beasts close in with despair. After leaving the Blood Moon Pack, we had been lost in the Black Forest for seven days. Our food was gone, our strength depleted. Now, I couldn't even handle three common rogues."Come on then," I said, raising the dagger. "Living is just pain anyway."Just as the wolves lunged—a black shadow descended from the sky.Claws flashed, and the three wolves were torn to shreds in an instant. A mist of blood filled the air.I stared, stunned, at the man before me.He was over six feet tall, with black hair and golden eyes. Even in the freezing snow, he wore only a simple black robe. A powerful aura ra

The smell of blood filled the temple. With trembling hands, the Alphas took the silver-laced daggers and carved the "Betrayer" mark into their own left arms. The silver poison burned their flesh. The air was thick with their moans of pain. But no one dared to stop. They knew this was the lightest possible punishment.Soon, only two people remained before the platform.Damon and Lyla.I slowly walked over to them."Now, it's time to settle the score between us."Lyla was a trembling heap on the floor, her disguise completely gone, revealing her true, ugly self. "Please… I was wrong… I was so wrong…" she cried."Wrong?" I crouched down to meet her gaze. "What exactly do you think you did wrong?""I… I shouldn't have offended you… I shouldn't have pretended to be noble…""No," I shook my head. "Your biggest mistake was touching my mother."The color drained from her face, leaving it a dead, ashen gray. "I don't know what you're talking about… I never…""Still lying?" I stood up. "Did

"Your Majesty!"The Alpha of the Silver-claw Pack suddenly cried out, his voice filled with desperation. "Please, show mercy! We will pay any price to make up for our mistake!"The other great Alphas quickly echoed his plea."Yes, Your Majesty! We will offer half of our pack's wealth!""For the sake of our long-standing alliance, please give us one more chance!""We truly didn't know who she was!"They were a kneeling mess, bowing their heads to the floor, begging for their lives. All eyes were on Kael, hoping for a shred of his mercy.Kael watched them with a blank expression. After a long moment, he finally spoke."The Luna Queen's will is my will."That one simple sentence shattered all their hopes."No!" A sharp female voice pierced the air. It was the Silver-claw Alpha's mate, a woman who was usually insufferably arrogant. She scrambled to her feet, her eyes wild with madness."You're all being fooled by her!" she shrieked, pointing at me. "She's a cursed witch who brings not

"Steal her bloodline?"An even greater uproar erupted from the crowd."What is she talking about?""How can a bloodline be stolen?""What does this mean?"Lyla's face turned a deathly white. "W-what are you talking about?" she stammered. "Stealing a bloodline? I don't know what you mean!"I ignored her pathetic denial and turned to the stunned Damon. He staggered back, all the color gone from his face. "No… impossible… you were just an outcast…""An outcast what?" I cut him off. "Finish the sentence."He opened his mouth, but no words came out.Marcus and the other Alphas looked at each other, fear beginning to creep into their eyes. Moments ago, they were mocking me, cutting me, forcing me to eat dirt. Now they realized they had provoked someone they could never afford to cross."Scared now?" I slowly descended the steps of the platform. With every step I took, the crowd below took a step back."You weren't acting like this three days ago."I stopped in front of Lyla. Her legs wer

"The Bloodline Trial will now commence!"The second-in-command's voice boomed through the grand temple.Three days had passed.I stood in a hidden alcove behind the throne, watching the scene below through a thin veil. All the great Alphas were present. Damon stood in the front row, dressed in his formal Blood Moon attire. Lyla clung to his arm, the sapphire necklace that belonged to my mother still around her neck.Everyone else who had participated in my humiliation was there too. Marcus, and the mates of the other Alphas who had cut me with their daggers. They all looked relaxed, whispering to each other. Clearly, they thought there would be no consequences for what they did.Kael sat on the throne, his presence as solid as a mountain."I have gathered you all today to discuss the alliance of the wolf packs," he began. "But before that, I have an old score to settle."The atmosphere in the temple instantly tensed."At the banquet three nights ago," Kael's voice was ice cold, "I

"All of you, get out."Kael's voice was a low thunder, laced with an authority that could not be defied. The kneeling wolves scrambled out of the hall as if the Goddess herself had granted them a pardon.Only Damon remained, frozen in place."Your Majesty, there must be some misunderstanding—""I said, everyone," Kael's eyes were still blood-red. "That includes you."The color drained from Damon's face."Y-yes, Your Majesty."He shot me one last look—a toxic mix of confusion and resentment—before he turned and retreated.Soon, only Kael and I were left.He walked over to me and knelt on one knee."I'm sorry I was late." He knelt, his voice raw. He gently traced the silver wounds on my arm, and a golden light flowed from his palm.A warm energy spread through my body. The silver poison was neutralized, and the cuts healed in seconds, leaving not even a scar."Better?" he asked.I nodded. "Thank you."He helped me to my feet, the crimson in his eyes not yet fully faded."I'm going to ki
